iOS 4.3 for iPad gives option of mute switch… or orientation lock!

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 02:28 PM PST

We’re hearing that the just released iOS 4.3 beta gives users an option in settings to toggle between mute and orientation lock in settings.

When iPad originally shipped with iOS 3.2, the hardware switch was strictly an orientation lock. iOS 4.2 changed this to strictly a mute switch (with orientation lock moving to the fast app switcher dock). Now it appears we’re actually being given a choice. Guess Steve Jobs changed his mind!

Hurrah.

iOS 4.3 for iPad to test new multitouch gestures, AirPlay video for Apps,

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 01:29 PM PST

iOS 4.3 for iPad to test new multitouch gestures, AirPlay video for Apps,

In addition to AirPlay video for apps (finally) it looks like Apple is considering new multitouch gestures for iPad with the just-released iOS 4.3 beta, perhaps to better compete with RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook and Android 3.0 Honeycomb:

Test Multi-Touch Gestures for iPad

This beta release contains a preview of new Multi-Touch gestures for iPad. You can use four or five fingers to pinch to the Home Screen; swipe up to reveal the multitasking bar; and swipe left or right between apps. We are providing this preview before releasing them to the public to understand how these gestures work with your apps. Test them and give us your feedback on the Apple Developer Forums.

Some of these might also match up nicely to the upcoming Mac OS X 10.7 Lion swipe between full screen apps functionality. What do you think, interested?

iOS 4.3 beta for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV now available for developers

Apple has just released iOS 4.3 beta for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad… and Apple TV. Nice to see the whole product line being kept unified. iOS 4.3 has been rumored to ship in March, so it makes sense to get it out to developers now.

And hey, is everyone getting Personal Hotspot now?

Daily tip: How to delete individual SMS Text or MMS messages

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 12:13 PM PST

Curious how to delete individual SMS Texts (or sexts, we’re not here to judge!) MMS from a conversation in your iPhone Messages app? It’s not obvious but it is simple, and we’ll show you how after the break!

Whether you’re a young celebrity trying to avoid the tabloids or just a regular user trying to stay out of trouble, it’s useful to know how to delete just certain SMS or even MMS messages without losing your entire conversation.

  1. Launch the SMS application
  2. Open the conversation you have messages you would like to delete
  3. Select Edit in the top right on the screen
  4. Select which messages you would like to delete by selecting them individually or all of them at once if you have multiple messages to delete
  5. Select delete on the bottom left

It is that simple and you will have gotten rid of whatever you didn’t want visible and you will still have the rest of the conversation saved.

Bonus tip: If you decide you do want to nuke the entire conversation, go back to the conversation list in the Messages app and swipe your finger left to right. A red Delete button will appear. Tap it and the conversation will disappear entirely.

If you want to learn how to delete even more incriminating evidence personal information from your iPhone, check out our longer guide.

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

Want Wi-Fi personal hotspot today, on any iPhone? There’s a Jailbreak for that!

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 10:54 AM PST

The Verizon iPhone will come with Wi-Fi personal hotspot service built-in, and GSM/AT&T iPhones might get the same feature in March with iOS 4.3 — but you can have it today on any iPhone with MyWi on Jailbreak.

MyWi is a wonderful little app and in my opinion, a major reason to jailbreak on its own. MyWi alllows you to create a wifi hotspot with your iPhone. I have a wifi only iPad and I never even considered purchasing the 3G version. I simply tether my iPad to my iPhone. Just be wary of doing this if you don't have an unlimited data plan. As of writing this, MyWi currently costs $19.99. It may seem like a hefty price tag but you'll pay that in data and/or tethering fees in less than 2 months. You'll only pay for MyWi once. You do the math.

Anyone already using it? Anyone considering it? If you need help, check out our Jailbreak Starters Guide and Jailbreak App Forum.

Phil Schiller: Building the Verizon iPhone

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 10:38 AM PST

After yesterday’s Verizon iPhone announcement, Apple’s Senior Vice President Phil Schiller has weighed in on what it was like building the Verizon iPhone. The two companies began talks to build a CDMA variant for Verizon’s network over 2 years ago in 2008. Over 1,000 test models later, we’ve officially got a Verizon variant.

Schiller says the task was anything but easy. Apple knows their own hardware but sometimes getting software and hardware to work together isn’t an easy goal to accomplish.

"A big part of it is the software, I'd say the biggest part," … "It uses the hardware in different ways."

Will there be a Verizon iPhone 5 this summer? (And should I wait?)

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 09:15 AM PST

Will there be a Verizon iPhone 5 this summer?

Now that the Verizon iPhone 4 is out one of the questions we’re getting hit with the most is — will there be a Verizon iPhone 5 this June. In other words, should they wait, not buy now and get into a contract, and wait for the next generation iPhone in 5 months?

Here’s the deal — no one knows. This is a new cycle and there’s no history to base a guess on. Apple usually releases new iPhones every June but they’ve all been the same GSM/AT&T iPhone. The Verizon iPhone 5 could easily be updated again, shown off at WWDC 2011 alongside the GSM iPhone 5. It’s a different radio chip and so requires it’s own product testing, but it could be done. Or Verizon could get the iPhone 5 in February 2012, a year after they get the iPhone 4.

So — big surprise — it’s a gamble. Buy a Verizon iPhone 4 now and maybe you won’t be able to get an iPhone 5 in June, or at least with a high level of subsidy. But you get to use an iPhone on Verizon five months earlier than you would if you waited.

Our advice on all this remains the same — if you can’t wait, if you have to have an iPhone on Verizon today, buy it and don’t worry about the future. If you can wait, wait as long as you can and then buy the best iPhone (or any phone) available to you and again, don’t worry about the future.

If you’ve already thought this over, let us know what you’re going to do!

Confirmed: iOS 4.3 to bring Wi-Fi Personal Hotspot to GSM/AT&T iPhone

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 08:19 AM PST

According to a Boy Genius source, and as reported yesterday, iOS 4.3 will definitely be coming to all iPhones and include the Hotspot feature which we saw at the Verizon event yesterday. Accoring to the source, the OS version will be 8F5148b and will have a baseband 04.08.00.

The release will not be until sometime in March however; so do not expect it to hit GSM devices as soon as the Verizon iPhone is launched, we are going to have to wait a little while longer. Also like we said yesterday, we imagine that the feature will be very dependent on your carriers approval, as will any surcharges for it. Maybe AT&T will take the opportunity to be an early adopter to keep existing customers and attract new ones too, here’s hoping!

Just as a refresher, the Personal Hotspot feature will allow up to five Wi-Fi devices to connect to and share your iPhone’s cellular data connection.

iPhone Bug: Can’t connect to cellular data network

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 08:18 AM PST

iPhone Bug: Can't connect to cellular data network

If you’ve ever picked up your iPhone, seen 4 or 5 bars, then tried to go on the web or check mail only to get the popup “Can’t connect to cellular data network” you’ve been bitten by this bug.

Sometimes the cell network really is down but sometimes it isn’t and that’s what makes this such a frustrating issue to trouble shoot. Details after the break.

Data and voice are separate services on your iPhone so you might easily be able to make phone calls and send/receive SMS but when it comes to using anything like Safari, Mail, or apps that need the internet — you’re dead. (And seeing those full bars and being dead is especially frustrating, like when you’re Wi-Fi router is working but your internet connection is down!)

Symptoms

This one is easy!

  • You can’t access the internet: no Safari, no Mail, etc.

Fixes

Here’s how you can try and fix it, least painful methods first:

  • Check to see if your carrier is having a data outage. If so, wait until it’s resolved. (Carriers will often lie, so check TiPb, Twitter, etc. and see if anyone else is complaining about an outage.)

If you’re sure it’s not your carrier:

  • Tap Settings, toggle Airplane Mode off, wait 5 seconds, toggle it back on
  • Do a soft reset
  • Do a hard reset
  • Tap Settings, tap General, scroll down to Reset, tap Reset Network Settings (you’ll have to re-enter all Wi-Fi passwords, etc. after this)

Reset Network Settings

Also frustrating is that this problem can be temporary — carrier outage, too many people on the tower, error on your iPhone — and it can fix itself on its own after a little while. It can also be a problem on your iPhone that doesn’t fix itself and drives you crazy. Those are the fixes we’ve tried, if you’re experiencing the problem let us know, and let us know what fixes have worked for you!
