Daily Tip: How to skin carrier names with Winterboard [Jailbreak]

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 01:46 PM PST

Sure you can get an iPhone that says AT&T or even Verizon now, but curious how to make the carrier name say anything you want? Want to put your own name, even an icon? If you’re Jailbroken and not afraid of a little hacking, we’ll show you how after the break!

While I am only showing this method for AT&T users, it can be done for non-AT&T users as well by changing the bundle and icon names in the tutorial accordingly which you can find in /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/)

Custom logos will not replace the actual system image files and can be turned on and off through Winterboard. Unlike apps like “Make it mine” which replaces system files, this customization is easily restored by unchecking the theme in Winterboard or by restoring your iPhone. This method does not make any permanent changes to your iPhone.

  • Before we get started you will need to SSH into your phone and have Winterboard installed. SBSettings and iFile are greatly recommended but not absolutely necessary.

Creating Your Theme

  • Go to: /private/var/stash/Themes

  • Create a Folder labeled “Carrier Logo.theme”

  • Inside that folder, create a folder labeled “Bundles”

  • Inside that folder, create a folder labeled “com.apple.ATT_US”  [Your logos will be put into this folder which will direct winterboard to skin them accordingly.]

Creating your Logo

  • You will be creating 1 logo. 2 versions: one will be against a dark background, and one will be against a white background.

You can create two different logos for the different backgrounds, but I will be creating just one for this tutorial. Also a similar method can be used for skinning the M-cell logo as well.

  • For the iPhone 4: Your logo should be 73px x 40px and be named Default(underscore)CARRIER(underscore)ATT@2x.png & FSO(underscore)CARRIER(underscore)ATT@2x.png
  • For the iPhone 2G, 3G, & 3GS: Your logo should be 73px x 20px and be named Default(underscore)CARRIER(underscore)ATT.png & FSO(underscore)CARRIER(underscore)ATT.png

*These are case sensitive so make sure the files are named exactly as above.

You can use any picture or text as long as it is the right size. If using text make sure that your background is transparent and that your file is a png not a jpg.

Using Winterboard to Implement Theme

  • Open Winterboard and make sure the Carrier Logo Theme is checked and above any other theme, as themes will override each other depending on which theme is listed above the other.
  • Click the winterboard tab above and the click respring. After the respring your logo should now be changed. To go back to stock, simply uncheck the theme.

I hope you found this tutorial helpful and remember to have fun!

Verizon to offer CDMA iPad 3G

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 12:55 PM PST

Hot off the heels of the Verizon iPhone announcement comes a report that Verizon Wireless will soon be offering Apple’s iPad with an embedded CDMA chip to better compete with AT&T. From Bloomberg:

Verizon will get an embedded chip in the iPad for use on its network, Francis Shammo, chief financial officer of Verizon Communications Inc., the parent of the wireless unit, said today in an interview in New York. IPad users currently need an extra device to connect to Verizon's network.

Apple began selling the iPad through Verizon back in October of last year starting at $629.99, but users were somewhat restricted by the need to carry Verizon’s MiFi card wherever they go (unlike AT&T). Neither Verizon nor Apple have announced when a CDMA iPad will be available.

With all the Verizon iPhone news today it’s nice to see Verizon taking steps to ensure a quality experience for iPad users, too. But with all those new iPhone users coming onboard, do you think their network will be able to keep up with demand – especially if they see an influx in iPad subscribers? Sound off in the comments below!

Verizon iPhone running iOS 4.2.5

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 11:19 AM PST

Verizon iPhone running iOS 4.2.5

We were fairly certain the Verizon iPhone 4 would require a new version of iOS, sporting a new CDMA radio stack, and it seems it will — iOS 4.2.5 (8E128).

Current GSM iPhones are on iOS 4.2.1 but it’s unknown if they’ll also get a bump to iOS 4.2.5 when the Verizon iPhone ships on February 10.

In addition to the CDMA radio, iOS 4.2.5 on Verizon will support the new mobile hot spot feature announced today, and while there’s no word on whether or not that will remain exclusive to Verizon, no other carrier has announced it yet either.

What do you think, will everyone get iOS 4.2.5 on February 10 or will Apple let Verizon be Verizon for a while first?

CDMA Verizon iPhone hits FCC

CDMA Verizon iPhone hits FCC

Coming as no surprise, the CDMA Verizon iPhone 4 has just hit the FCC. (You know Apple wasn’t going to let the government announce it, right?)

Model A1349 (as opposed to the GSM version’s A1332) has the expected test results for CDMA / EV-DO Rev. A on the 850 and 1900MHz bands along with Bluetooth and WiFi without a whiff of GSM support for global roaming

AT&T has been prepping iPhone plan as Verizon now has iPhone

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 09:04 AM PST

AT&T has been prepping a new advertisement plan to do what they can to keep people from switching to the Verizon iPhone. AT&T plans to focus its ads on the fact they say their network has faster 3G speeds and overall performs better than Verizon’s network (not sure who they are fooling with that!).

More so than just advertising, AT&T has been taking other steps in preparation for this day of the lose of exclusivity. They have been investing in improvements to their highly criticized network as well as been promoting lower prices for older iPhone models and introducing Android and Windows Phone 7 devices.

AT&T’s Chief Executive of Wireless Business, Ralph de la Vega, was asked Monday about what their plans were for the time when they lose exclusivity of the iPhone:

We are ready for it. The short- and long-term viability of AT&T will be good whether we have exclusivity or not. We are much bigger than this.

According to Consumer Reports, AT&T was ranked dead last being named the worst carrier in the US. AT&T better have a good plan in place to make up for all the issues they have run into since the iPhone launched.

One interesting note about this entire thing is the fact AT&T seemed to hit big with allowing customers to upgrade early to the iPhone 4 locking them into a brand new 2-year contract with early termination fees hitting at $325 per smartphone on your plan. This would be big revenue for AT&T if people decide to defect prior to their contract expiring.

Verizon iPhone 4 Antenna is Redesigned …for CDMA

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 08:47 AM PST

Wondering if we’re going to have another “Antennagate” with the Verizon iPhone 4? We obviously can’t say until the device is released on February 10th, but what we can say is that Apple has redesigned the Antenna. Before you go and assume that suggests Apple thinks the original design was flawed, remember that Verizon uses CDMA for 3G, which requires a completely different radio than AT&T’s GSM network and therefore requires a completely different Antenna. This also confirms that leak from last week, by the by.

In any case, if you take a close look at the image above you’ll see a couple new black dividers in the external Antenna on the Verizon iPhone 4. Apple also removed the divider next to the headphone jack. Whether, as Apple says, they are just changes necessary for the switch to CDMA or, as the conspiracy theorists will no doubt spin any second now, they are changes to prevent the “Death Grip” remains to be seen. All we know is that it won’t magically allow your to keep your data connection active when a call comes in. Tradeoffs, people.
