Why AT&T won’t be getting an LTE iPhone 4G this year either…

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 02:02 PM PST

Fatty iPhone 4 for AT&T LTE iPhone rumors

AT&T isn’t getting an LTE iPhone 4G any time soon but they are launching 4G, in fact — look up, look down — they just did! Actually, what they did was call HSPA+ “4G” because it goes faster than regular old HSPA 3G and because T-Mobile is already doing that and Sprint is calling WiMax “4G”, and Verizon is calling early LTE “4G”, so why not? And when real LTE 4G comes out, that could be called 4G as well (though I bet they’ll call it 5G to have even more Gs, because that’s better, right?)

I got to watch a little of the brouhaha unfold this morning live in the CES hallways and after talking it over with some fellow bloggers the nut seems to be this — AT&T might get an HSPA+ iPhone “4G” later this year or next year or maybe they’ll get an LTE iPhone 4G in 2012, but we don’t know and the terms are so deliberately marketing skewed it doesn’t mean much anyway at this point. (iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 only supports HSPA 7.2, not the much faster HSPA+ 21 carriers like Bell and Telus have been offering for a while already.)

All you really have to know is this — future iPhones will be faster, most years by a little, once in a while by a lot.

[Update: BGR says maybe HSPA+ "4G" next year]

We now return you to our regularly scheduled Verizon, iPhone 5, and iPad 2 rumors…

No iPhone Live! tonight, sorry!

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 01:00 PM PST

No iPhone Live! tonight folks, sorry! I’m still running around at CES and am not able to pull it together. But we should be taping a very special Smartphone Experts Round Table podcast late tonight or tomorrow night with yours truly, Dieter, Kevin, Phil, and all the gang, so you’ll definitely get some content to hold you over.

Then we’ll do a big review on iPad Live! on Sunday to make it up to you.

iPhone 5 or CDMA iPhone casing leaked?

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 12:22 PM PST

Pictures have leaked out of a newly designed casing for what could be iPhone 5, the CDMA (LTE?) version of iPhone 4, or just a reworked casing for iPhone 4. If — big if — these are real the main difference appears on the sides of the case when it comes to the antenna bands — there are four black separators in these photos as opposed to three on the current iPhone 4.

You will notice in pictures below that the band on the lower left of the phone that caused all the attenuation issues remains but there is a new black band above the mute rocker and also the black band is no longer on the top of the phone and appears to have been moved to the top of the right hand side of the phone.

Check out the pictures and a video after the break and let us know what you think — real, fake, or antennagate?

iPad 2 case pops up at CES boasting a mock iPad 2

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 11:54 AM PST

Looks like Engadget has discovered a mockup iPad 2 case at CES. The screen above also seems to contain a mock iPad 2 as well. As the iPad 2 announcement grows even closer, the normal mockups and leaks are ramping up. This case seems to fit in line with most of the others. It has camera cutouts in the front and back and a much larger speaker cut-out.

This case and mockup comes from Dexim. Besides having the mythical iPad 2 mockup, it looks like a pretty neat case concept in itself with a pretty ingenious design for a Bluetooth keyboard. It also confirms what all the rest have when it comes to size. The iPad 2 will most likely be slimmer than the current generation.

After the leaks with the iPhone 4, I’m still skeptical as to whether or not these case manufacturers had a way to get ahold of an early mockup. On the other hand, all these case leaks seem to be in agreement. What do you guys think? Hit Engadget’s website via the link to see a few more images.

TiPb Asks: What iPhone or iPad accessory do you want to see most in 2011?

What iPhone or iPad accessory do you most want in 2011? Rene is off covering CES 2011 and while I admit some of the things we’ve seen so far especially the medical accessories like heart and blood pressure monitors are super sweet (and I want them!) it’s been almost 2 years since Apple opened up iOS 3 (iPhone 3.0) to accessories and there’s just got to be more coming, right?

A really great game controller with thumb stick and button controls, a really slim Bluetooth keyboard case that just works, a dashboard mount that lets your iPad take over your car’s interface system, a helmet that holds your iPhone in front of you so you can FaceTime while you walk (what?) would be a good start, but what more do you want in 2011?

Withings demonstrates iPhone interface for scale, blood pressure readings, baby monitor – TiPb at CES 2011

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 07:35 AM PST

Withings is already well known for their internet-enabled scale but now they’re also introducing blood pressure readings and a baby monitor that all share and report data back to your iPhone over Wi-Fi or 3G. The scale is a handy way to keep a record and track your weight over time. Likewise the blood pressure interface. The baby monitor offers full audio and video whether you’re across the hall, across town, or halfway across the world.

We got the full tour, live at CES 2011 Unvelied. Check out the video above and pictures after the break and let us know…

…Are these the kind of health and medical related peripherals you’ve been waiting for?

Garmin releases StreetPilot for iPhone

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 07:15 AM PST

Garmin just released StreetPilot for iPhone, the newest addition to their mobile line-up of GPS apps. The app boasts a lot of the same features nüvi owners already enjoy. StreetPilot has up to date map support for both the US and Canada. All maps and directions are pulled from Garmin’s servers so you can expect the same quality directions as a native GPS unit. Since maps are pulled from the server, the app only takes up around 7 MB of space on your phone. Hit the jump for a few initial impressions, some screens, and a list of features.

iTunes Link

I had some time to play with StreetPilot earlier today and found it extremely intuitive and easy to navigate. Not only that, the UI is nicely designed as well. I liked the layout of the weather portion a lot and I’m considering using it for weather too. Voice navigation worked just as you’d expect it to. I also tried out the pedestrian directions as well. It re-routed me on a shorter route that didn’t take one way streets into consideration. All in all, it worked well.

One thing I noticed while playing with optional settings was that the iPod controls need some work. I couldn’t always get it to add the correct songs to a playlist. And skipping a track didn’t always register and you’d have to push the on screen button again.

Holding down on any part of a map will bring up a pop-up menu that allows you to choose that location as a destination, find something nearby, save the location, or display the address. There are little shortcuts throughout the app that seemed pretty well thought out. I’m looking forward to using this app on our next trip. If you’ve picked this up, let us know what you think. If not, what’s your favorite GPS app?

For those of you still debating on GPS apps, here’s a list of StreetPilot’s main features -

Features include:
-Always up-to-date maps for the U.S. and Canada
-Voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions including street names
-Real-time traffic updates to avoid traffic delays
-Speed limits for most major roads
-Integrated Local Search
-Millions of points of interest
-Lane assist with junction view for complicated interchanges
-Address book integration to navigate to contacts
-Integrated iPod® music controls
-Multi-tasking on iOS4 for navigating while calling
-Current weather conditions and forecast
-Place calls directly from search listing
-Navigate in both portrait and landscape mode
-Easy to install with quick load times

Iomega SuperHero, an alternative backup solution for iPhone and iPod Touch

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 06:38 AM PST

Iomega has announced an alternative backup solution for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The device known as the Iomega SuperHero, takes the form of a normal charging dock. The major difference is the dock has an SD Card slot complete with a 4GB card. This on-board storage allows you to backup important data from your device.

When placed in the dock, your iPhone or iPod Touch will be charged, but also automatically backed up. The backup is for photographs and contacts only. Unfortunately you cannot backup any applications, music, video, SMS, Email etc. To enable the backup process, you also need an app from the App Store called SuperHero which is free. The app launches automatically when you place your device in the dock. The dock is connected directly to a power outlet and has no facility to connect to a Mac or PC should you want to sync to iTunes.

The included 4GB SD card can be replaced with a larger capacity card should you need more storage for your photos and contacts; also more than one device can be backed up to the same SD card.

The Iomega SuperHero should be available worldwide later this month for around $70 and is compatible with iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 as well the 2nd generation iPod Touch and above.

Can you see yourself using a dock like this? Is it too limited as a backup solution? Let us know in the comments!

Griffin and Crayola partner to bring ColorStudio HD to iPad

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 06:38 AM PST

Griffin and Crayola in a joint venture have announced that ColorStudio HD will be coming to the iPad in the Spring. ColorStudio HD combines a Crayola iMarker (stylus) and an interactive coloring book app aimed squarely at entertaining the little ones.

Remember last year's summer vacation? Are we there yet Dad? How much further Dad? Well hopefully when this app launches, those days will be gone. Simply pass your beloved iPad into the back of the car and you won't hear another word until you get there. Crayola has long been a favorite with the younger generation, add in the iPad and this app is a winner for the children!

The ColorStudio HD app allows young artists to color and interact with special "live" animated coloring book pages that move and react as they color, combining custom-produced pictures, animations, music, sound effects, and high quality special effects. For example, in one setting fish swim, doors open to reveal surprises, and mermaids serenade the young artist. The iMarker digital stylus brings the app to life.
Crayola ColorStudio HD will be avialble in Spring 2011 at a cost of $29.99 and will come complete with the Crayola iMarker stylus. The app will be free to download from the App Store as long as you have paid for the iMarker.

The only fear I have is when the little ones misplace the iMarker; I can see permanent marker pens and crayons being used instead, leaving your iPad in a bit of a mess!

Daily Tip: How to queue apps in Cydia [Jailbreak]

Posted: 05 Jan 2011 06:36 AM PST

Interested in installing multiple apps from Cydia and want to know how to do it all at once in a batch queue? This is especially useful if you are installing things that will make you respring your phone. We all know respringing is a necessary evil in the jailbreak world, but this way you can get away with one respring instead of several. Click on through for the simple tutorial.

If you’re browsing Cydia and there’s more than one thing you’d like to download, there’s an easy way to install all of them at the same time. Once you’ve found an app you want to install follow these easy steps to queue it for download.

  1. Tap the name of the app to bring up the download screen.
  2. Tap install.
  3. Tap Cancel/Queue in the upper left hand corner.
  4. A menu will pop up, tap Continue Queuing.

Some users have pointed out that if you’re using the newer version of Cydia (I’m still on 4.1), the Cancel button isn’t what you want, the queue button is at the bottom of the page.

You’ll notice when you go back to browsing apps, anything queued for download will now show up in green. Once you’ve decided on the last app you’d like to download, when you click install, it will also install anything you have queued as well.

Let’s say you don’t find anything else you’d like and want to just download what you have queued (or want to remove something from your queue), you can use manage to install your queue.

  1. Tap Manage at the bottom
  2. Tap the blue Queue button in the upper right corner and confirm to download your queue

That’s all there is to it. You now know how to install multiple Cydia tweaks and apps at once. This can be a life saver when downloading several things that require a respring. You won’t have to keep respringing and reloading Cydia to download them individually. If you’ve used this method and have any additional input, let us know. If this is new to you, give it a try and let us know how it works out!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)
