Add a physical joystick to your iPad with the Fling joystick

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 02:23 PM PST

Fling Joystick for iPad

If you’re into gaming on the iPad then you’ll definitely want to take a look at the Fling joystick controller for the iPad, from Ten One Design. The suctioned joystick is applied to your iPad screen for instant hardware control and acts as a physical directional pad for games like first-person shooters, side-scrollers and space shooters. Take a look at the video after the break.

Along with the addition of a hardware D-pad, the Fling provides some level of resistance simulating a force-feedback experience. You can order a Fling controller from Ten One Design for only $24.95. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Steve Jobs’ New Year’s resolutions found on Starbucks napkin [Humor]

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 01:35 PM PST

Scoopertino, a website that is devoted to fake Apple news, “got their hands on” a very top-secret Apple document – Steve Jobs’ New Year’s resolutions.

The napkin is standard-issue Starbucks beige. Written in what appears to be a thin Sharpie, black, are ten numbered resolutions. It cannot be determined if they are in ascending or descending order of importance. Three mug stains appear to be random.

  1. Keep the Verizon myth going
  2. More crank calls to Zuckerberg
  3. Trademark “Steve” – sue Ballmer’s ass
  4. Fire Schiller if he FaceTime’s me nude again
  5. Reject more apps, just for fun
  6. Change phone number, don’t give to Woz
  7. Double Mossberg’s payola
  8. Fire someone on their birthday
  9. Upgrade to iPhone 4 when antenna gets fixed.
  10. Shut down scoopertino – ain’t funny

Now, I know this is all for laughs, but I can’t help but think that resolution #3 holds some truth!

UPDATED: What happened to iFixDirect and their white iPhone 4 conversion service?

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 10:46 AM PST

Last month, I had my iPhone 4 converted to white with iFixDirect, and today reader Mark wrote in to let us know the site no longer seemed to be taking orders. So what happened? They’re going through a change of management.

As the new owners of iFixDirect, we are very excited to see what the future holds for this company. We have heard all your complaints, in-fact we are the ones who have been trying to resolve all the issues you may have had in the past. Recovery is a slow process but we are working day and night to help you restore your faith in this business and provide you with the quality service that you have been seeking all along.

I’ve been in correspondence with my contact from iFixDirect, but don’t have much details on the change of management other than that one of the original owners of iFixDirect is now the sole owner and running the business on his own. Their website has been updated to reflect the changes and also teases of two new color swaps – red and blue.

We are hoping to receive more details on when the services will become available and will update you when we know more. So if you were waiting on the service, sit tight. In the meantime, anyone excited for a red or blue conversion?

UPDATE: Looks like white conversions will be starting up again very soon, with red and blue to follow on shortly thereafter. Prices should be broadly similar and if you’re wondering — yes, the TiPb 10% promo code will still work (see the link at the top of the post). A couple more pics after the break, and more details to follow!

UPDATE 2: If you are a customer that has not been able to contact iFixDirect, their new email address is support@ifixdirect.com and phone number is 1-800-441-8817. Any email received from ifixdirect@gmail.com is not them and should be disregarded.

Daily Tip: How to add a Gravatar profile pic to your TiPb comments!

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 10:08 AM PST

Noticed that some TiPb comments have avatars — pictures of the commenters — next to the comments? Curious how you can get your own picture up there? TiPb is using the cross-site Gravatar system in our comments and though it does take a few steps to set up, they’re simple and painless and we’ll show them to you after the break!

Gravatar stands for Globally Recognized AVATar and it basically associates a profile picture with your email address and then any time you post a comment on a supporting site, it automagically adds your Gravatar. No fuss, no mess.

If you’ve already got a Gravatar, just make sure to use the email address associated with your Gravatar account when you post a comment. If you don’t yet have a Gravatar, here’s how to get one:

Create a new account

  • Click on sign up for free (link above the Email or Username field)

  • Enter your Email Address and click the Signup button

  • Check your email for a confirmation message
  • Click the link in the confirmation message

Choose your username and profile pic

Once your email account has been confirmed, the fun begins!

  • Choose a username. If the one you like is already taken, try a variation.
  • Pick a password. (Don’t make it something simple, or the same as your username)
  • Confirm your password and click Signup

  • When it complains you don’t have an image yet, click on the Add one by clicking here link

  • Choose where you want to get your image from, your computer, an internet link, your webcam, or a previous upload

  • Crop the picture to suit your tastes and click Done

  • Choose a rating for your Gravatar (note, TiPb only accepts G rated Gravatars — we’re a family friendly site!)

And you’re done!

Bonus tip: Add additional email addresses

If you use more than one email address, for example we used to use @theiphoneblog before switching to the shorter @tipb, you can click the Add an email address link, enter another email address, and confirm it. That way all your comments get associated with your Gravatar.

There you have it, a terrific way to add some personality to your comment posts. If you have any questions or need any help getting setup, leave a comment below. And once you’re Gravatar is locking, leave a comment so we can see it!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

Ampkit+ for iPad – app review

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 09:58 AM PST

YouTube Link

Ampkit is a guitar rig emulation app available for both iPhone and iPad. For this review, I was using the Ampkit+ iPad version and had access to all the extra add-ons and packages. It’s worth noting there is a free version of the app as well. Hardware wise, you’ll need to pick up the Ampkit LiNK in order to connect your guitar to your iPad or iPhone, available for $39.99. This is similar to the same process as Amplitube 2 and the iRig which I took a look at earlier this month.

Click through for a video demonstrating sound quality, some thoughts, and how I think it stacks up against the competition.

[iTunes Link]

The first thing I noticed upon installing Ampkit+ for iPad is that it’s a universal binary. Seeing as the paid version is currently $19.99 in the US app store, it’s nice to see you have the choice to run it on your iPhone and/or iPad without paying twice. Amplitube 2 has two separate apps, so if you have an iPad and an iPhone, you’ll have to purchase both if you want to use both versions. Amplitube 2 is also currently $19.99 for the full version on both iPad and iPhone.

As far as what’s available within the app, you’ll see exactly what you’d expect. You have the ability to scroll through several different presets as well as create your own rigs. You can then save them in a favorites list for future use. While filming the video, we didn’t have trouble finding sounds or rigs to match what type of sound we were looking for. If you can’t find it, you certainly have the option to build your own custom rigs.

One issue I did notice with Ampkit that we never experienced with Amplitube was bad feedback. We tried both apps with headphones, surround sound systems, and standalone tower speakers. We never received any bad feedback with the Amplitube + iRig setup. We did, however, experience some annoying feedback with Ampkit + LiNK. This typically only happened when applying distortion pedals. It didn’t happen very often but we could never find an explanation as to why it would do this sporadically.

When it comes to the regular app, I preferred the layout of Ampkit over Amplitube. In Amplitube’s defense, I did use the iPhone version while I had access to the iPad version of Ampkit. I didn’t enjoy how cramped the Amplitube layout was on the iPhone. I downloaded the iPhone version of Ampkit as well just for comparison. The layout just seems to be a bit more thought out than Amplitube’s is. When it comes to software, I think Ampkit is a more pleasing experience.

The hardware comes out about the same, minus the feedback issue we experienced with the Ampkit LiNK. When it comes down to it, I think you’ll have to decide which application you enjoy using more. If you’re debating between Ampkit and Amplitube, I’d say download the free versions and play around. Whatever app you feel more comfortable navigating, that’s what you should use. Cost wise, you’ll spend a bit more on Amplitube if you want the iPhone and iPad version. Hardware costs about the same so if you’re only looking for a rig emulator for use on a single iOS device, it comes down to preference.

Any of you guys tried out Ampkit? What are your thoughts?

Pros

  • General app UI seems well thought out
  • Rigs are easy to set up and customize
  • App is a universal binary, unlike other competitors, one purchase will get you access to both iPhone and iPad versions

Cons

  • Experienced some bad feedback while using distortion pedal settings
  • Some rig names may be a bit more “fun” than they are descriptive

App Store ratings M.I.A.?

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 08:44 AM PST

It appears for some strange reason that the App Store ratings seem to be missing as of this morning. On the featured page all of the ratings are gone and show each app has no ratings. Once you click on the app the rating seems to be back but for some reason on the main page the rating is no where to be found.

Also when I was trying to update a few apps this morning the download began to hang taking much longer than usual. I also had two Game Center requests which took ages to accept and register on the server. Maybe something strange is going on with Apple servers this morning and hopefully these strange issues go away quickly.

What do you think is causing these anomalies?

Handbrake updated, adds support for iPhone 4, iPad, and AppleTV 2nd Gen

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 07:54 AM PST

Handbrake just got a rather large update that includes several new features that should make Handbrake fans jump for joy. For those of you not familiar, Handbrake is a freeware application that allows you to transcode video. I use Handbrake religiously in order to put my hard copy DVDs in my iTunes library for playback on my iOS devices. This release version is numbered at 0.9.5. They’re also only offering support for Intel-based Macs going forward.

Handbrake 0.9.5 adds support for the iPhone 4, iPad, and 2nd generation AppleTV. It’s also added support for BluRay as well (note this is only structure support, not decryption). This is great news for a lot of us that want to re-encode our media for use on new AppleTVs and iPhone 4s.

Click through for a full list of feature changes from Handbrake’s release notes.

List of changes in Handbrake version 0.9.5 are as follows –

Core Library
-BluRay disc structure support. (No decryption support)
-Updated Libraries (x264, ffmpeg)
-SSA Subtitle support. (Including burn-in)
-MP3 audio now supported in MP4 files (Note: Limited Player compatibility)
-VOBSUB subtitle now supported in MP4 files (Note: Limited Player compatibility)
-Updated Presets for newer devices and better quality
-AC3 encoding support.
-Many Bug Fixes and other small improvements
-Improved DVD Main Feature detection (when using dvdnav)
-Universal audio downmix support (all audio types can be downmixed)
-PointtoPoint encoding (second or frame start and end times)
-Peak framerate option (Capped VFR)

All GUIs
-Updated x264 Advanced Panel
-Video Quality Slider drops % value and only shows RF for x264
-Batch Scan (Scan Multiple files at once. N.B: Does not include multiple VIDEO_TS folders / Image files)
-Many Bug fixes
-Many Tweaks to improve usability.
-Ability to edit queue jobs

Mac GUI
-New Audio Panel supporting >4 Audio Tracks
-VLC detection in /Applications and ~/Applications
-Multiple instance support

Windows GUI
-Encode Status in GUI. (CLI window is now always hidden)
-Improved Auto-Naming for Destination file name.
-Drag / Drop Video onto Main Window to scan.

Linux GUI
-Multiple instance support (run multiple copies of ghb at once)
-Many Bug fixes and UI improvements.

Notices -Power PC (PPC) is no longer officially supported. Given limited resources and time, it simply isn't feasible for this project to support minority platforms. For those of you still using older hardware, we recommend you stick with 0.9.4.

iPhone Bugs: Home Button not working?

Posted: 04 Jan 2011 06:53 AM PST

Several of our readers (and one of our editors…) are reporting a bug where the iPhone Home Button does not always respond to single-click or double-clicks. It might be software related as most people seem to have begun noticing this problem after installing iOS 4.1. It was hoped the bug would be fixed in iOS 4.2.1 but no such luck. Other causes that have been considered include a hardware short or dust or lint getting under the button. Ally also mentions that it may be caused by the home button not being properly centred. Possible symptoms and fixes, after the break.

Is your iPhone Home Button not working properly?

Issues (intermittent)

  • You single or double-click and nothing happens
  • You double-click and it only registers a single click

Fixes

Yes, it is as bleak as it is annoying. Have you had this bug yourself? Any other fixes you’ve tried?
