Daily Tip: How to untethered jailbreak original iPad, iPhone 4S, and older devices on iOS 5.0.1 with redsn0w 0.9.10b1

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 01:35 PM PST

Heard about the untethered jailbreak for the original iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and older models running iOS 5.0.1 and curious how to use it on your own device?. This jailbreak won’t yet work newer, Apple A5 chipset-powered devices, namely the iPhone 4S or iPad 2, but if you own anything earlier, you’re in luck.

Supported devices

  • iPhone 4 (GSM & CDMA)
  • iPod touch 4th generation
  • iPad (orignal model)
  • iPhone 3GS

What you need

  • A supported device – please note this will not work for iPhone 4S or iPad 2
  • A Mac or PC
  • redsn0w 0.9.10b1 – Mac, Windows

Untether via the Corona Cydia package

If you’re already tethered jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1, you can untether your jailbreak using the Corona package in Cydia.

Untether via redsn0w

If for some reason you’d prefer using redsn0w to untether, you may do so. Just run the version of redsn0w linked above over your existing jailbreak. When prompted what you want to do, just uncheck Install Cydia since you already have it installed. Let redsn0w do its thing and you should be untethered when it completes.

Jailbreak your device

If you’re not jailbroken at all, perform the following steps –

  1. First Launch redsn0w
  2. This version and other newer versions of redsn0w should automatically detect what version of iOS you are running. No need to manually browse to a firmware file this time. Just click Jailbreak and follow the prompts.
  3. Next redsn0w will prompt you to only continue when your device is powered off. If it isn't already, power your device off while it's connected to the computer.
  4. Next you will be guided through putting your device into DFU mode. Follow the steps and redsn0w will take care of the rest.
  5. After redsn0w finishes doing it's thing, you're done!

Common issues and how to solve them

Stuck on Apple logo or in recovery mode

Some users seem to be experiencing this issue. Performing a clean restore in iTunes and then attempting to jailbreak after a clean install should alleviate this issue.

redsn0w fails

First attempt to select a custom IPSW under Extras in redsn0w and navigate to the iOS 5.0.1 IPSW to see if this fixes the issue. If it still fails, try a clean restore in iTunes and then attempt to jailbreak again.

If you’re running into other issues, make sure to check out our jailbreak and unlock forums for further help troubleshooting common and not so common jailbreak issues.

iPhone activations see huge spike on Christmas day, significant increase in App Store downloads

iPhone activations see huge spike on Christmas day, significant increase in App Store downloads

Apple’s iOS device activation numbers spiked 353% on Christmas Day. In addition, app sales jumped 252% after millions of people opened their new iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPod touch and headed straight for the App Store.

Estimates from Flurry Analytics peg iOS and Android device activations averaging around 1.5 million per day, but Christmas day saw around 6.8 million devices activated.

In terms of App Store and Android Market downloads, estimates suggest the number of apps purchased on Christmas day more than doubled from 108 million downloads per day in December, all the way up to roughly 242 million downloads across iOS and Android devices.

To make things interesting, Localytics also issued a report indicating a 15 fold increase in iOS device activations, with the iPod touch seeing as high as a 21 fold jump (most likely due to the low cost of entry into the iOS ecosystem). This contrasts the difference between how analysis of sales and App Store purchases are calculated, but the main point remains the same.

Poll: What kind of case do you prefer for your iPhone?

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 01:28 PM PST

CES 2012 is coming up soon and before we get ready to amp up our accessory coverage, we thought we’d start by finding out what kinds of cases the TiPb Nation prefers to rock on the iPhone? There’s an incredible range these days, from nothing at all — going naked, so to speak — to protective films to ultraslim skins to the luxury of leather to belt holsters and pouches, to the ultimate in armor hard cases, to silicone or aluminum bumpers, to everything in between.

Personally, I just switched to the Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case and I’m loving it. Before that I was using the Draco IV and before that, the BodyGuardz Carbon Fiber.

As always, vote in the poll up top and give us the reasons why in the comments below. And if you’re not sure what kind of case you like yet, check out the links below for lots of examples!

Top 5 iPhone and iPad apps for electronics shoppers

Breaking down the top 5 best iPhone and iPad shopping apps to help you find, compare, and buy the electronic gifts you need and want

Top 5 shopping apps for iPhone and iPad

Itching to purchase a new electronic gadget or accessory and wish you could shop from the comfort of your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad? Whether you’re looking to buy a bigger screen TV, some speakers, or even a brand new iPad, there are a ton of apps for just exactly that. Here are some of our favorites.

Amazon Mobile

Everyone who is familiar with online shopping knows that Amazon is one of the primary for just about anything, including electronics. With Amazon Mobile, you can shop for your latest gadget with ease from your iPhone or iPad. Additionally, you can shop for a friend or family member’s a wish list or add items to your own.

Out and about and wish to compare the price of an item in a retail store with Amazon? Scan the barcode with Amazon Mobile to instantly search for the item. Once you place your order, you can also track its status in anticipation for its arrival.

Apple Store

The Apple Store, online or retail, should be your first stop when shopping for Apple products, and the Apple Store app should be your first tap when shopping from your iPhone. In addition to online shopping, you can reserve items for in-store pickup, track your orders, and schedule appointments at the Genius Bar.

While visiting an Apple Store location, you can even purchase accessories on your own with EasyPay, request help, check in for reservations, and meet up with a Specialist at the store. Unfortunately, the Apple Store app is not a universal app, so there’s no optimized version for the iPad. (Get on that, Apple!)

Best Buy

If you have a Best Buy nearby, I’m sure it’s one of your primary locations for picking up anything related to electronics. With the Best Buy app, you can do your shopping from the comfort of your iPhone. Now, if you need an HDMI cable for your Apple TV, you may be wondering why you’d want to shop for that with an app and wait for shipping when you can just drive a few miles down the road and pick it up now. Well, with the Best Buy app, you can verify that your local store has the item in stock, purchase it ahead of time, then head into the store and pick it up in person. You can also look up the Best Buy trade-in value for your Wii, Xbox, Sony and other video games. Shop smarter, not harder.

Ebay

With the eBay apps for iPhone and iPad, you can can bring the word’s largest marketplace with you wherever you go. And as all eBay shoppers know, this can be an essential asset to eBay shopping because you will receive instant alerts when you are outbid or when auctions are ending. In addition to shopping with the eBay app, you can sell your own items and upload photos directly from your iPhone or iPad’s camera.

Newegg Mobile

Looking to build a new PC or upgrade your iMac’s ram? Newegg is likely your first stop for computer hardware or software purchases. With Newegg Mobile, you can shop from your iPhone – read reviews, view photos, and make purchases. You can also keep up with the latest deals, even when out and about.

Rumor: Completely redesigned iPhone coming in fall of 2012

Rumor: Completely redesigned iPhone coming in fall of 2012?

BRG claims that sources close to Apple are telling them that the next iPhone will be released in the fall of 2012, bringing in a completely new design with an all-aluminium back.

We have also learned that Apple is planning to use a rubber or plastic material — similar to the material used in the company's bumper cases — that will be built into the new iPhone case. In all likelihood, this material will be used as a bezel surrounding the front edge of the phone (like the iPhone 3GS bezel) and it will serve two purposes. First, it will join the glass iPhone face with a new aluminum back plate. It will also cover a redesigned antenna system that surrounds the device, allowing Apple to build the rear case out of aluminum without having to use a large plastic insert above the antennas as the company does on its iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G.

While BGR has had solid Apple information in the past, they’ve recently been far more miss than hit, especially where new iPhone models and releases have been concerned. However, it does make sense for Apple to stick to a new fall release cycle for the iPhone given the iPhone 4S release changeover earlier this year, and the need for a strong, fall, hero device now that iPod has declined.

Rumor: 32 and 37-inch Apple Television coming in late 2012

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 07:36 AM PST

More Siri-powered Apple television set rumors

Randomly accurate rumor site, Digitimes has word from “industry sources” that suppliers are starting to build materials for 32 and 37-inch Apple Televisions for release in the second or third quarter of 2012.

Instead of a form of set-top box (STB) like the Apple TV launched in 2006, Apple’s new products will be full TV sets, the sources added [...] The displays of the new iTV sets will focus on 32 and 37-inch sizes initially, noted sources in the supply chain.

Steve Jobs mentioned in his official biography that he’d finally “cracked” the television, and we’ve heard rumors that Apple was recently in talks with media executives about a television set product. However, Apple is no doubt working on a lot of new products in the lab, so keep this filed this in your “expect it when you see it” folder for now.

iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak now available for original iPad, iPhone 4, older models

iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak now available for original iPad, iPhone 4, older models

Thanks to pod2g and all his hard work, an untethered jailbreak is now available for the original iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and older models. Both redsn0w and Corona have been updated to support the new, untethered jailbreak.

A few days ago, @pod2g gave the untether to both the iPhone devteam and the chronic devteam. We've put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three).

Unfortunately, Apple A5 chipset-powered devices, namely iPhone 4S and iPad 2, are still in jailbreak limbo.

Because those devices cannot use geohot's limera1n exploit to inject the untether, they require exploits above and beyond those used for this release. Keep following pod2g on twitter or his blog for any progress reports!

Hit the source links below to start jailbreaking iOS 5.0.1 untethered, and if you need any help jump on into our jailbreak forums.

Become a master of Infinity Blade II with these developer tips

Posted: 27 Dec 2011 12:12 AM PST

If you want to become a master of Infinity Blade II, its developers have shared a number of great tips to get you on your way. Infinity Blade II is the sequel to the hugely successful original infinity Blade and it makes full use of the iPhone and iPad's gaming capabilities to deliver stunning visuals and game play. There are a total of sixteen tips which we have listed below.

  • Parry an enemy weapon by either swiping in the same direction as the enemy weapon strike or by swiping in the opposite direction.
  • Pay attention to gem modifiers and equip them to get more gems or more gold.
  • Save super moves and magic for the battles when you are really going to need them.
  • Equip a Gold+ gem to earn more money quickly.
  • Use a Health Regen potion before a difficult Titan to constantly heal throughout the battle.
  • Keep an eye out for hidden keys. They are small and difficult to see, but they can open great treasures.
  • When playing the Heavy class, doing a successful parry will also give you a block charge back.
  • A successful parry will open up a Titan to more combo hits than a dodge or block.
  • Perfect blocks prevent elemental damage from a Titan attack even if you don't have the right elemental defense; it also reduces the block damage.
  • Perfect parries increase the hit window on a Titan.
  • To maximize damage with Heavy weapons make sure you plan to do the combo hit at the natural end of the hit window, as the slash attack always ends the hit window.
  • To pull off an ultra combo with dual weapons you need to do left/right/up (or some rotated version) attacks when you are in the combo hit mode.
  • Titans will tend to have the same elemental attack as each other during a Rebirth, equipping the right gems/equipment to defend against them is worth it.
  • Titans are weak to the opposite elemental of their attack. If a Titan has a fire attack he will take double damage from ice elemental and ice magic.
  • Using dual weapons allows you to do multiple combos, one after the other.
  • Learn which moves cannot be blocked or parried, then dodge these moves.
That is the full list, some are more obvious than others but give them try and hopefully you will soon get to master the game. Infinity Blade II is a universal binary and is availabe for $6.99. It is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad.

Legally port Siri to unsupported iPhones, iPad with Spire [Jailbreak]

Siri ported to unsupported iOS devices via Spire

iPhone jailbreak developer chpwn, along with the help of planetbeing and Ryan Petrich, have released Spire — a legal way to port Siri to currently unsupported iOS devices like iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

Spire uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn't have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts. Similarly, rather than directing all traffic through a specific proxy server (and the associated privacy issues), Spire allows you to specify your own proxy server.

Available in Cydia now, and if you need extra help, jump into our jailbreak app forum.

Foxconn to double size of iPhone factory in China

Foxconn to double size of iPhone factory in China

Foxconn is planning to double the size of their iPhone factory in China at a cost of $1.1 billion dollars, according to Chinese news site China Daily.

The base will be centered on the Foxconn Science Park in Zhengzhou, provincial capital of Henan, increasing its current production lines to 95, said the Henan provincial development and reform commission during a conference. The expansion plan, costing 7 billion yuan ($1.1 billion), is expected to bring $20 billion in sales revenue in 2012, the commission said.

Foxconn is Apple’s largest contractor and this new plant will be employing around 130,000 workers who will subsequently be able to pump out around 200,000 iPhones per day. That’s around 18 million iPhones per quarter.

Add in other contractors, and consider that Apple has the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S currently available in the retail market, and it gives us a hint at Apple’s own estimates on the amount of iPhone sales we’ll be seeing throughout 2012.

Approaching 100 million.
