Daily TiPb: How to add more game ROMs to the iMame emulator for iPhone and iPad

Daily TiPb: How to set up games on the iMame emulator for iPhone and iPad

Curious how to get more game ROMs on the iMame emulator for iPhone and iPad? iMame hit the App Store yesterday but didn’t exactly wow anyone with the built in content. Luckily, it’s fairly simple to add more ROMs to the emulator, including a lot of classic games if you have them handy.

  1. Download iMame – App Store link
  2. Download Mac or Windows PC desktop iExplorer client – Web link
  3. Connect your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad to your computer via USB dock cable.
  4. Start iExplorer on your PC
  5. Navigate to apps/imame/documents.
  6. Drag and drop zipped ROMs from your PC into iExplorer in the apps/imame/documents.

Note that only ROMs from certain ROM sets will work. Rumor has it that you need ROM set 37b5, but older sets can work. It’s hit or miss at this point.

It also supports iCade if you have one, and I found the support from the open source community was already better than Atari’s iCade support. It detects changes better, and when it connects to iCade, the on screen controls disappear. You can also customize the controls.

UPDATE: As noted in the comments, you don’t need iExplorer app on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. You just need the Mac or Windows client. I’ve updated the steps to remove that reference.

Daily Tips range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you'd like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com.

redsn0w updated to 0.9.9b9d with various bug fixes

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 11:05 AM PST

redsn0w has been updated to version 0.9.9b9d in order to fix a few bugs. This update comes right after an update to ultrasn0w and after adding support to redsn0w for iOS 5.0.1.

iPhone3GS owners in our comments section below noticed a problem with the untethered jailbreak available for the old-bootrom 3GS. We've corrected that problem in 0.9.9b9d. If you have an old-bootrom 3GS and have already used last night's redsn0w on it, you can re-run it again without losing anything. Just use this new version, go to Extras->IPSW and manually select the 5.0.1 IPSW, then go back and Jailbreak it again (but you can uncheck Cydia because it's already installed).

Keep in mind this jailbreak is still tethered unless you have an iPhone 3GS with the old bootrom. You can grab the updated version via the links below then check out our guide on how to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 via redsn0w. If you have questions or run into issues, check out our jailbreak and unlock forums as well!

HTC already has a workaround in place to sidestep ITC ban

HTC already has a workaround in place for ITC ban

HTC has already completed a full workaround to sidestep an International Trade Commission (ITC) ban that would have prohibited them from selling some Android devices in the states.

HTC Corp. has already completed a technical workaround to skirt a U.S. agency ruling that found a user interface in some handsets infringed an Apple Inc. patent.

The apparent conflicts in the patents dealt with a “small UI experience” according to HTC, who made a formal statement on their intentions to completely remove the UI process application(s) from all devices and software that were in violation.

So, yeah, our favorite gadget companies’ hard earned dollars and critical development time at work.

Review + Giveaway: Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 07:02 AM PST

The Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 adds some color, some texture, and some design tweaks to make one of the hottest cases of last year just that much hotter!

Design wise, the Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case is just as the name describes — barely there. It’s about as close a fit and slim a case as the materials and laws of physics allow. The new colors, silver, black, pink, red, and gold are really nice looking, and as always all the ports and buttons are cut extra wide so you don’t have to worry about your 3.5mm headset jack or dock connector fitting. I tried it on both a black and a white iPhone, both the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S, and it looked absolutely amazing on both.

Review: Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4

Now because the Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum is such a slim and fitting case, and while they say it’s impact resistant — and show a picture of a hammer hitting it to drive the point home! — you’re not getting the same level of protection as you would from a bigger, bulkier case. It will, however, stop any scratches, bumps, and light impact along the back and sides. It also doesn’t protect the front, and there’s no screen protector included, so if that’s a concern you’ll need to pick up a BodyGuardz, InvisibleShield, or similar product separately.

Also, you need to know what you’re doing to remove it, especially if you’re a girl and don’t want to break a nail. I flipped it over and peeled the volume-control side off first, the popped my iPhone out. It took some practice to get good at, but if you plan on putting it on and leaving it on, you won’t need to worry about it much.

Review: Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4

Overall I really like the look and feel of the Case-Mate Barely There Brushed Aluminum case for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. I’ve always been a fan of Case-Mate’s Barely There line, and their metallic finishes, and this one is no exception. If you’re looking for something that’s stylish and sophisticated, give the Case-Mate a try.

Why Facebook and other iPhone and iPad apps sometimes say “Cleaning…”

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 06:21 AM PST

Why Facebook and other apps sometimes say "Cleaning..."

With iOS 5 it’s not uncommon to sometimes see the label under many apps, including Facebook, sometimes change to read “Cleaning…” This is a feature of iOS 5 that Apple hasn’t really explained, so it’s caused a lot of you to write in an ask about it. Here’s the deal…

Basically, that’s iOS 5 deleting cache and temporary files so that when iCloud or iTunes does a backup of your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, that backup is smaller and faster.

Since adding iCloud and Wi-Fi sync options, it’s become important to keep app data as clean as possible, so backups are as efficient as possible, so we’re not left waiting around for minutes or hours getting as frustrated as possible.

And yes, this is the same reason that, under the original iOS 5.0, apps like Instapaper would sometimes lose all your locally cached articles. (Since fixed with the addition of a third storage option between documents and cache, one that’s not cleaned but also not backed up.)

So, if you see “Cleaning…” pop up under Facebook or any of your other apps, don’t worry. That’s just iOS 5 keeping your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad as lean and mean as possible.

Siri: The Holiday Horror Movie

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 05:58 AM PST

Rooster Teeth Productions has put together a short tongue-in-cheek video trailer based upon the theory that Siri has become self aware and decides it no longer wants to be your personal assistant. Instead it turns against the human race and decides to go on a killing spree avenging all those lame things you asked it to do in the past.

The video is called Siri: The Holiday Horror Movie and is based on a group of friends who all receive an iPhone 4S for Christmas. The joy is short lived as one by one Siri oversees their timely demise. It is a very well put together trailer; but beware it does include a little blood!

SwitcherCleaner helps clean up the multitasking Fast App Switcher [Jailbreak]

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 05:56 AM PST

SwitcherCleaner in Cydia

SwitcherCleaner is new jailbreak mod in Cydia that changes the behavior of the multitasking Fast App Switcher to only show apps that are actually running in the background, and keeps the quit button visible at all times.

  • *Requires iOS 5 or higher
  • SwitcherCleaner contains two features of SwitcherMod for iOS5.
    • RemoveRecents: show only running apps
    • AlwaysAvailableQuit: show quit button anytime
  • No icons added to the homescreen
  • No options to configure

In addition, SwitcherCleaner helps save time for power-users with the AlwaysAvailableQuit function, removing the requirement to tap-and-hold an icon before you’re able to kill the app.

It’s a great tool for anyone who wants to keep their Fast App Switcher clean.

iMame brings retro arcade gaming to the App Store

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 01:18 AM PST

iMame has just appeared in the App Store, it is a hugely popular app on other platforms as it is an emulator for retro arcade cabinet games from the early 1980's. The official version comes with a set of seven games pre-installed with no official way to add any more games.

iMAME is an application designed to recreate the hardware of arcade game systems in software on modern personal computers and other platforms. The intention is to preserve gaming history by preventing vintage games from being lost or forgotten.
The included games are:-
  • Circus
  • Crash
  • Fire One
  • Hard Hat
  • Robot Bowl
  • Side Track
  • Spectar
  • Star Fire
  • Targ
Not the most interesting set of games however keep in mind that iMame is a free app. Where this could get really interesting is if there is a way to add game ROM files to iMame; you could then be playing games like Pac Man, Galaxians etc. According to TouchArcade, there already is a way to do it; however we have yet to test it.

If it is easy to add other game ROMS without the need to jailbreak, the app will probably have a short life in the App Store. We recommend you grab this one as soon as you can. iMame is a universal app and also includes support for the iCade.

App Store making big big inroads in China

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 09:13 PM PST

App Store making big big inroads in China

Market research firm Distimo has issued a new report detailing the huge gains the App Store has made in China.

When comparing the two countries, the Chinese App Store for iPhone devices was just 18 percent of download volume vs the U.S. at the beginning of 2011. By November, that share had climbed to 30 percent, meaning China jumped from less than a quarter to nearly a third over a 10-month period. The numbers are even more interesting when examining the iPad: China's take is just south of 50 percent of combined downloads between the two countries.

This doesn’t come as a huge surprise given the size of the Chinese market. More interesting, however, is that iPad app downloads have now jumped up to a staggering 50 percent of App Store sales for Apple, making it a straight split between the two markets.

China is now the second largest market for Apple next to the U.S. as of June, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be loosing momentum anytime soon.

Largest U.S. newspaper publisher buys thousands of iPad 2s, iPhone 4S

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 07:48 PM PST

Gannett on the iPhone 4S

The largest newspaper publisher in the United States has ordered “thousands” of iPad 2s and iPhone 4S, according to an internal memo from Gannett newspaper division president Bob Dickey.

The independent Gannett Blog posted the memo Wednesday evening (from an iPhone no less). Writes Dickey:

In every local market, we have the most and the best journalists. These new tools will help our journalists meet the demands of the new news cycle, one that requires agility in real-time reporting, social media and greater emphasis on video storytelling, further increasing our competitive advantage.

Dickey also waxed poetic about the potential the iPhones and iPads have for journalists, saying the new devices will “enable them to do new things we can’t even imagine yet.” A note to Mr. Dickey: Give TiPb — heck, any of the Mobile Nations sites — a read. We’ll show ya real quick what can (and has) been done for years.

The phones and tablets will reach newsrooms in January.
