Untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1 shown off

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 04:44 PM PST

pod2g has shown off an iOS 5.0.1 untethered jailbreak running on an iPhone 4.

Here is a new video demo of the current status of the 5.0.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4. This is meant to reassure people that were thinking it only works on older iPods. The jailbreak is near ready for prime time (excluding 4S and iPad 2).

Hopefully iPhone 4S and iPad 2 owners won’t have too long to wait, however, as he previously said he’d overcome the cache issues on A5 devices

Either way, looks like they’re finally nearing the end zone in the land of untethered. Don’t forget to support jailbreak devs and donate when you can if you find their tools useful.

ultrasn0w updated to version 1.2.5 with more support for iOS 5.0.1

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 03:25 PM PST

The latest version of ultrasn0w has just hit Cydia with support for unlocking additional devices under iOS 5.0.1. You’ll need to have a compatible baseband in order for the unlock to work. Below is a list of compatible devices and basebands.

This version supports the following devices and basebands on iOS 5.0.1 –

  • iPhone 3GS – 04.26.08 – 05.11.07 – 05.12.01 – 05.13.04 – 06.15.00
  • iPhone 4 – 01.59.00

If you’re planning on upgrading from an older firmware, make sure you preserve your baseband with a program like sn0wbreeze if you need an unlock. Then follow our guide on how to unlock your device via ultrasn0w on iOS 5.0.1. If you need more help, make sure you check out our jailbreak and unlock forums too.

AlbumArt on AppSwitcher [Jailbreak]

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 01:11 PM PST

AlbumArt on AppSwitcher does exactly what the title says – adds album art to your app switcher. I personally like having this functionality because I have a tendency to forget what songs come from what albums. This way I don’t have to jump into my iPod app, I can simply bring up my app switcher and look without having to stop what I’m doing.

Once installed from Cydia there’s nothing to configure or set up, it should just work. It’s available for free and requires iOS 5.0 or higher.

Google Voice update preventing users from actually making Google Voice calls

    Posted: 21 Dec 2011 12:57 PM PST

Today’s Google Voice app update seems to have — wait for it — actually broken the ability for users to place calls with their Google Voice number.

When attempting to make a call it appears as though it is connecting like normal, but if you look at a caller ID it will show you your actual cell phone number, not your Google Voice number.

Hopefully Google will fix this will all due haste. In the meantime, let us know if you’re experiencing the problem, and if anything has helped you remedy it.

Kindle updates iPhone and iPad app to include newspaper, magazine and textbook support

Kindle updates iPhone and iPad app to include newspaper, magazine and textbook support

Kindle has updated their iPhone and iPad app to version 2.9, which now includes support for newspapers, magazines and textbooks. Here’s the full update log:

    iPad:

    • New Design for Magazines: Kindle for iPad customers now have access to the huge selection of over 400 magazines and newspapers that are available on Kindle Fire. Magazines such as Martha Stewart Living, Food Network Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Men's Health, Popular Science and many more are displayed in rich full-color pages. Customers can buy a single issue or subscribe to popular magazines and leading newspapers and have them wirelessly delivered to the Kindle for iPad app.
    • Read print replica textbooks including rich formatting and layout of the print editions and support for notes and highlights, zoom and pan, and linked table of contents.

iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch: – Email documents to your new Send-to-Kindle e-mail address and we deliver them to your device. The documents are automatically archived in the Amazon Cloud and available for re-download on your iOS or supported Kindle devices. – Open PDFs from Mail or Safari, by transferring them from iTunes, or by sending them to your Send-to-Kindle email address. The Kindle PDF reader supports PDF table of contents and thumbnail navigation for quickly jumping through the document. – New library organization allows you to view your Kindle Books, Newsstand, and Docs.

Kindle for iOS is one of the better eBook reading apps out there, which even rivals Apple’s own iBooks in a lot of respects. I, for one, personally prefer iBooks, but this update may give reason for those in similar opinion to make the jump into the Kindle eBook ecosystem.

Google Voice for iPhone updates with native call integration on the Sprint network

    Posted: 21 Dec 2011 09:26 AM PST

Google Voice Update include native Sprint call integratrion

Google has updated their Google Voice app for the iPhone, including complete integration with Sprint to allow calls to be sent directly to the 3rd party app rather than the stock Phone app. Here’s the complete update log:

    • Multi-recipient texting, with contact autocomplete.
    • Sprint integration support: sends all calls to the native dialer when the phone is integrated with Sprint
    • Multi-line text entry field with character count.
    • 1-touch Copy/Paste in dialpad

This is rather big news, and somewhat surprising that Sprint would allow this to happen. Given the nature of most carriers these days, letting subscribers bypass their network completely is a good indication that Sprint has their ears open and are actually listening to the requests of their user-base.

Google Voice is available in the App Store for free and compatible with the iPhone and iPod touch.

Apple fixes App Store download issue for iPhone and iPod touch users on iOS 3.1.3

    Posted: 21 Dec 2011 06:46 AM PST

Apple fixes App Store download issue for iPhone and iPod touch users on iOS 3.1.3

Apple has issued a fix for iOS 3.1.3 App Store download bug. The bug in question removed the ‘Download’ button altogether when users running the older firmware attempted to acquire apps from the App Store.

Since the App Store is essentially a native wrapper around a web-based interface, Apple is able to update it without having to push out a full version of the whole OS. That can lead to things breaking out of nowhere, but also getting fixed.

It’s good to know that Apple still has the backs of those running on firmware that’s now going on two years old.

Super Bowl to be streamed online for the first time, available on iPhone, iPad

    Posted: 21 Dec 2011 12:24 AM PST

The NFL has announced that this year will be the first year that the Super Bowl and the Pro Bowl will be streamed live across the internet. What’s more, iPhone and iPad users will be able to view the games on their devices too.

The NFL stream will be available to view on its own site and the NBC channel. If you want to view it on your iPhone or iPad or iPod touch, you will need to pick up the Verizon NFL Mobile app. The app is free in the App Store but unfortunately it will only work for Verizon Wireless customers.

The whole Super Bowl experience should be greatly enhanced next year with the promise of multiple camera angles, highlights and live stats, right in the palm of your hand.

Daily Tip: How to get your music artwork to show up on all tracks of an album when using iTunes Match

    Posted: 20 Dec 2011 09:22 PM PST

If you are like me and spent hours ensuring your album and track artwork is all in order in iTunes only to find that when you subscribed to iTunes Match it all went haywire, you are not alone. I signed up for iTunes Match last week when the international launch went live. I uploaded all of my music only to find that the album artwork showed up fine in album view but only the first track of each album showed any artwork, all of the other tracks had missing artwork.

Well the good news is that there is a very easy way to get it back. It can be a little time consuming but it's worth it if you just hate to see that musical note and grey background instead of your artwork. A word of warning, this can take a while if you have a lot of content.

    • Open up your music application
    • Select the Album you want to recover the artwork for
    • Click on the first song, it should start to play and if it’s like mine the first track will have artwork
    • Click on the next track button on the bottom right and it will skip to the next track
    • Here you will see the problem with no artwork shown
    • When this track starts to play, you will notice that the receiving data spinning wheel will appear next to your carrier name and 3G or WiFi icon. This tells you that the it is receiving data and that just happens to be the album artwork.
    • It doesn’t appear while the track is playing,  you have to skip forward then back, then you will see that the second track now has album artwork
    • The best way to make sure all the tracks on that album get artwork is to just skip through each of the tracks. When the spinning wheel disappears, you should now have artwork for all the tracks in that album.

Every one of my albums was like this after uploading to iTunes Match, I did this for them all and now my artwork is perfect. It definitely is a pain and takes a long time to do but worth it if you must have your artwork all in order. Hopefully Apple will address this issue in a future update but until then, give this a try and let us know if it works for you.

Nuance acquiring voice-recognition app maker Vlingo

    Posted: 20 Dec 2011 09:19 PM PST

Nuance set to acquire voice-recognition app maker Vlingo

Nuance Communications, makers of Dragon Dictation and the voice recognition technology behind Siri in the iPhone 4S, have agreed to purchase competitor Vlingo.

Nuance Communications Inc. agreed to buy Vlingo Inc. in a deal that gives the developer of voice- command technology a system that can respond to spoken words with actions such as Internet searches.

Vlingo had a big boost in downloads after some iPhone users realized it could perform tasks that Siri has yet to offer, such as sending status updates to social networks like Twitter and Facebook by simply speaking into their iPhone.

Details of the upcoming acquisition have yet to be disclosed by either company. While this may be good for Nuance, having one fewer major player in the voice recognition space is sad for those who like dynamic, highly competitive markets.

    Giveaway: Custom iPhone backplate mod

    Posted: 20 Dec 2011 09:15 PM PST

Ally’s new series of weekly iPhone and iPad mods and repairs inspired me to try and see how well a total beginner like myself could tackle her projects. So, playing n00b to her ninja, the first thing I thought I’d try was a simple backplate swap.

And the folks at unyousual.net were kind of enough to supply me with a custom backplate to get me going. I picked the classic 6-colors Apple logo on a nice, dark wood textured background, uploaded it to their site, submitted it, then waited by the mailbox for it to arrive.

Swapping out the backplate was a little nerve-wracking, I’m not even going to lie. My iPhone 4 is out of warranty, so that wasn’t a concern. Seeing everything open, with the battery and components exposed, took a few deep breaths to get used to.

unyousual.net provided both types of screwdrivers, both regular and pentalobe, and they were magnetized so I didn’t have to worry about losing the screws — at least as much as I might have otherwise. Once the screws were out, swapping the backplate was quick and easy. Slide the original one out, slide the new one in, refasten the screws.

The results were super sweet too. The new custom backplate looks stunning — so stunning I had to immediately protect it from those around me who tried to make off with it!

If you’re at all interested in mods for your iPhone, a backplate swap is a really nice, simple way to get started. Just pick up your own custom kit from unyousual.net and give it a try!

    Giveaway

The awesome team over at unyousual.net are giving our equally awesome readers a chance to win one of five (5!) free custom iPhone backplates! Here’s what you need to do to enter:

    1. Go to unyousual.net and upload the custom picture you want to use.
    2. Take a screen capture or picture of your custom backplate and
    3. Post the screenshot in the official contest thread
    4. We’ll pick 5 (five!) of you and unyousual.net will send you your backplate!

iMessage issue causes headaches for stolen iPhone users

    Posted: 20 Dec 2011 07:48 PM PST

    iMessage

Multiple users who’ve had their iPhones stolen are reporting that iMessage is still linked to their stolen device even after they’ve conducted a remote wipe, deactivated their iPhone with the carrier, and even changed their Apple ID password. This means that whomever steals or buys a stolen iPhone may have the ability to iMessage from the original owners account, pretty much impersonating them.

Although Apple has yet to comment on the situation, Ars Technica was able to get iOS security expert Jonathan Zdziarski to chime in on his thoughts of why this may be occurring.

“iMessage registers with the subscriber’s phone number from the SIM, so let’s say you restore the phone, it will still read the phone number from the SIM. I suppose if you change the SIM out after the phone has been configured, the old number might be cached somewhere either on the phone or on Apple’s servers with the UDID of the phone.”

In short, Apple needs to fix this, and quick.

Apple offers “Complete My Season Pass” for iTunes TV shows

    Posted: 20 Dec 2011 07:42 PM PST

Complete My Season Pass now available to all iTunes subscribers

Apple has rolled out a new option for iTunes subscribers called “Complete My Season Pass”, which allows users who’ve downloaded single episodes of any TV show offered in iTunes to download the rest of the full season at a discounted rate.

Apple previously offered a similar option for music, called “Complete My Album”, so this is great news for those who use iTunes to purchase and download TV shows as well as music.

You can start using the new feature now in iTunes.
