Poll: Are you having issues with iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak?

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 12:21 PM PDT

Our newest jailbreak ninja, Cody, recently let you know how to untethered jailbreak iOS 4.3.1 via redsn0w but since then, how has it been? I personally haven’t had time to upgrade to iOS 4.3.1 and re-jailbreak. Cody however has voiced that he has had a lot more springboard crashes than he did under the previous iOS 4.2.1 greenpois0n jailbreak.

Most jailbreakers are aware that not all apps are compatible with a new jailbreak, so outside of those causing issues, are any of you experiencing issues? Cody and a couple readers have wrote in to let me know that they’ve experienced some safe mode crashes and reboots under iOS 4.3.1.

If you have issues, let us know in the the poll and/or in the comments as well as checking out our TiPb jailbreak forums to see what issues other members are experiencing and if they’ve found any ways around them.

iPad 2 having problems connecting to Verizon 3G?

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 09:35 AM PDT

TiPb Asks: Is your iPad 2 having problems connecting to Verizon 3G?

Verizon iPad 2 owners are complaining that if they turn off 3G in settings they can’t reconnect to Verizon’s 3G network unless they reboot. Restoring hasn’t helped and apparently swapping devices hasn’t helped either. It’s unclear how many Verizon iPad 2 3G users are suffering with the bug but an Apple Discussions thread has already filled with page after page of complaints.

More after the break…

[Apple Support via CNET]

So here’s what we know:

Bug symptoms

  • Turn off 3G cellular data
  • Try to turn 3G cellular data back on
  • It won’t reconnect to Verizon network

Bug work-around

  • Turn on 3G cellular data
  • Reboot iPad
  • iPad should reconnect to Verizon

This is annoying to say the least and hopefully Apple and Verizon will address the issue in the rumored iOS 4.3.2 update. In the meantime let us know if you have experience this bug and if so, whether the workaround worked or if you’ve come up with any other workarounds!

Apple pulls Best Buy’s iPad 2 inventory due to strange sales practices? [rumor]

Posted: 08 Apr 2011 06:29 AM PDT

A reader of CrunchGear, who works for Best Buy, said that Best Buy was holding off on selling the iPad 2's it had in stock, telling customers there weren't any available. In fact they were in stock but allegedly Best Buy had just reached its sales quota for the day and wanted to hold further sales over to another day. As a result Apple is rumored to have pulled all stock of iPad 2's from Best Buy stores with the exception of display models.

The Best Buy employee also told CrunchGear that Apple's Tim Cook was involved in the decision and that further discussions would be taking place to rectify the situation. Until then, Best Buy would not be selling the iPad 2.

It will be interesting to see how this one pans out, if it turns out to be true. Best Buy Online still show the iPad 2 however it is not available for home delivery or in-store collection. Have any of our readers been to a Best Buy over the last couple of days to pick up an iPad 2? Let us know if you noticed anything out of the ordinary!

iPhone vs. Android app UI

iPhone vs. Android app UI

Android Gripes, which I’m guessing is an homage to the terrific Adobe UI Gripes blog, has posted up some screenshots of iPhone apps side by side with their Android counterparts.

When I use an iPhone and an Android phone at the same time, I often find that apps from the same company look a lot different on these two platforms – the ones on Android usually look much worse.

There are without a doubt some well designed, great looking Android apps (Google makes a lot of them) but it is strange to see the same apps from the same developers simply not as well rendered for Android as they are for iPhone. Either Interface Builder in Xcode is even more magical than the iPad, there’s some constraint in the Android development tools, or Android users simply aren’t demanding the design level they deserve.

(There’s a joke that if an app has an ugly icon, iPhone users won’t download it. That same joke should exist on Android.)

Check out some more example via the link below.

What does Apple have to do to re-revolutionize the iPhone?

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 09:55 PM PDT

Lessien, writing on DiogeneX, asks what Apple has to do, not to catch up with things like notifications or cloud services, not to keep up with things like apps and specs, but to once again truly leap ahead of the competition like they did in 2007 with iOS and 2008 with the App Store.

Apple is as vulnerable as any other company to believing the future is a straight line extrapolation of the present. But eventually the knock-offs will be good enough to fool most people. Solely focusing on incremental improvement is like polishing diamonds. And perfect is the enemy of the good.

I won’t spoil her two answers except to say they’re good.

Daily Tip: How to save a picture from an email message

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 08:13 PM PDT

New to iPhone, iPod touch or iPad and trying to figure out how to save a picture from an email or MMS message; or need to paste the picture into a new message? It is very simple to do and we show you how, after the break!

Here’s how to save a picture from a Mail message:

  1. Open the message in Mail that contains the picture.
  2. If the file has not been downloaded from the server, just click on it and it will download and appear on the screen.
  3. Tap and hold your finger down on the image and a box will pop up with three options.
    1. The first option is Save Image. This will save the picture in your Photos App under Camera Roll.
    2. The second option is Copy. This will put the picture on your clipboard where you can then paste it into any other application that allows paste.
    3. The final option is Cancel to return to your mail message.

That’s it. It  really is that simple! If you have any other good Mail tips let us know in the comments!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you'd like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. (If it's especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we'll even give ya a reward…)

Viacom and Time Warner Cable are officially at war over TWCable TV app for iPad

Posted: 07 Apr 2011 06:50 PM PDT

Time Warner Cable issued a press release today announcing they have filed a request for declaratory judgement related to its recent TWCable TV app debacle, which forced them to remove a number of channels from the iPad app last week.

We're at an impasse with a handful of network owners, and we need an impartial third party to referee the situation and confirm that our interpretation is correct. We thought the most efficient way to settle this would be to go before a judge and ask for a decision that, while noncombative, would establish the rights that we bargained for.

TWCable is taking a non-aggressive approach to the matter by requesting a judge step in and make a fair decision based on the facts. They believe they’re well within their rights to stream content from Viacom (and other content owners) to an iPad located within the viewer’s home under current agreements.

Viacom, on the other hand, isn’t taking things lightly and has fired back with some pretty strong language, stating that Time Warner “blatantly grabbed the rights that their competitors have negotiated in good faith to obtain” and has now filed a lawsuit against the cable provider.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out given the gaping differences between new media and old media these days, but we’re hoping a judge declares Time Warner Cable is in the right, don’t you? Sound off in the comments below!
