2010 TiPb Award for Favorite #Fail of the Year goes to…!

TiPb.com 2010 App, Accessory, and iOS awards

The 2010 TiPb Award for Favorite #Fail of the Year goes to… White iPhone 4!

The white iPhone 4 was announced by Apple alongside the black model during WWDC 2010 but shipping delay after shipping delay — variously ascribed to manufacturing problems surrounding the color consistency, proximity sensor, light bleeding, etc. — have kept it from appearing on the market to date. While rumors swirl that it may simply never show up, for their part Apple has pegged early 2011 as the next release window:

We're sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone yet again, but we've decided to delay its release until this Spring.

Apple is usually so on the ball when it comes to managing production and release of their consumer electronics — “great artists ship” is a favorite quote of Apple CEO Steve Jobs — that on the rare occasions when something like the white iPhone 4 fails to materialize it becomes a big story.

And it’s not one that will end for the better in 2010.

Tip: How to make your own custom iPhone ringtones in iTunes

Posted: 11 Nov 2010 11:01 AM PST

Interested in how to make your own custom ringtones for iPhone? Ever since Apple opened the door, it’s been the popular thing to do. From soothing classics to to the latest hip hop tunes, you can setup the music you want for the contact you want, always know who’s calling you before you answer, and — depending on just what music you choose — turn a few heads while doing it. petey28 from our forums will show you how after the break!

Before you start, make sure you have a recent version of iTunes installed. The latest is always best.

  • Select the Song you want as your ringtone and choose edit from the menu. (This procedure is similar for both Mac and Windows users. In iTunes, select the song you want to use, right-click on the track and hit ‘get info’)
  • Select ‘Options’ from the menu along the top, then change the ’stop time’ of the song to 15 seconds (I recommend using 30 secs) as its the max time available for the ring tone).
  • In the advanced iTunes menu, select ‘create AAC version’. This will create a second version of the song.
  • Go back into the original song's ‘get info’ options and delete your ’stop time’ setting, otherwise the song will end after 30 secs.

Mac Users

  • Right-click on the new, 30-second version and hit ’show in ‘finder’
  • Change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r. (This can be done just by clicking on it and overtyping whats already there.)
  • It’s best to make the file name as short as possible too, so rename this in the same way.
  • Drag the .m4r file from Finder to your desktop and delete the version that is in iTunes.
  • Now import the file back into iTunes. To do this, open the iTunes ‘File’ menu and choose’ Add to Library,’ find the song on your desktop and add it back in.

Windows Users

For Windows users -now you have the AAC version of the song, you need to find it on your computer. You’ll probably have to take this path to the file – my documents, my Music, iTunes, iTunes Media, music and lastly the artist's folder. When you’ve found it:

  • Change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r by clicking on it and overtyping the name.
  • If you can't find the file extension type then you need to change how you view the file
    • go to your control panel and click ‘folder options’
    • untick the option that says ‘hide extensions for known file types’
    • Go back into the iTunes folder and you now you’ll be able to see the extension you want to change.
  • Import the renamed file back into iTunes through the ‘add to library’ option under file menu.

Getting the ringtone onto your phone

  • Plug your iPhone into your Mac or Windows PC
  • Wait for your iPhone to become available in iTunes
  • Find your newly made ringtone file under the ‘ringtones’ category in the left hand column within iTunes.
  • Enable ringtone sync and make sure your newly made ringtone is checked off
  • Hit sync

Turning on your new ringtone

OK now for the the best bit:

  • On your phone go to settings, then sounds and your very own ringtones created by you should appear just above the standard ones
  • Tap it to select it as your default ringtone
  • If you want to use it for just a few of your contacts, go to Phone, Contacts
    • Find the contact(s) you want to use it for
    • Hit edit
    • Repeat the procedure above to select the rington
  • Enjoy!

Thanks again to petey28 for the tip! If only Apple would let us customize text tones as well…

iPad developer gets app rejected, call from Steve Jobs

Posted: 11 Nov 2010 11:00 AM PST

Steve Jobs with an iPad

If your iPad app is rejected from the iTunes App Store there’s a slim chance that, just like developer Ram Arumugam, you might get a call from Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Arumugam emailed Steve Jobs after his app was rejected but instead of getting the typical “[something curt] – Sent from my iPad” email back, he got a phone call. The Seattle Times reports:

The two talked about Arumugam’s app, called “Economy for iPad,” and why it was rejected by Apple

His app had included non-public API requests not approved by Apple, and Steve Jobs was able to reason with him enough to have Arumugam submit Economy for iPad without the undocumented API request. Since then, it has been a huge success in the App Store and has gone on to hold the No. 1 spot under the Finance category.

It’s great to see Jobs taking such a proactive approach in reaching out to the smaller developers out there — it’s something that you just don’t see a whole lot of these days.

What do you think about Steve Jobs calling instead of emailing? Let us know in the comments!

How to put on (and take off) an Incipio Destroyer case for iPad

Posted: 11 Nov 2010 10:09 AM PST

The Incipio Destroyer Case for iPad is a cute name for something that’s supposed to protect your precious iPad, but protect it does. Like a tank. Seriously. It bloody well comes with a tool to secure it on and off! Does that make it difficult? Not really. I found it rather intuitive actually.

Check out the video above to see me give a try, and there are a few pictures of the final results, after the jump!

Ping adds Twitter integration, will that add relevance?

Posted: 11 Nov 2010 09:44 AM PST

Twitter has just announced that that they’ve integrated with Apple’s social music network, Ping to make it easy for users of both services to share music.

On Ping you can easily link to your Twitter account to instantly find Ping users among the people you already follow on Twitter.

Once you've linked the accounts, whenever you Post, Like, Review, or tell your friends why you purchased a song or album on Ping, this activity will also be tweeted to your Twitter followers – complete with playable song previews and links to purchase and download music from iTunes.

When you click on a Tweet that’s sent via Ping or that contains an iTunes link, you’ll see the song or album in Twitter's details pane, with the ability to listen to song previews from iTunes, making the experience even richer.

This follows Apple’s inability to come terms with Facebook over social integration.

The real question is, will Twitter integration make Ping more relevant? Is it enough to get you to use Ping more? Or to use it at all if you haven’t already? Or would Facebook still be a better option?

MarkdownMail for iPhone and iPad – app review

Posted: 11 Nov 2010 08:17 AM PST

YouTube Link

MarkdownMail for iPhone and iPad allows you to write articles in the Markdown format. You’ll then be able to export the markdown in an email or send beautifully formatted HTML emails from the app itself. For those who aren’t familiar with what markdown is, let’s cover that first. Markdown is a markup language created by John Gruber and Aaron Swartz. It’s extremely easy to learn and extremely convenient and efficient for publishing online. Markdown will basically convert your content into valid and properly formed XHTML. You don’t have to deal with HTML tags and code. Markdown will take care of that for you.

Read on for a quick walkthrough of MarkdownMail which is currently available for both iPhone and iPad.

[iTunes Link]

MarkdownMail is a very simple app that looks like a plain note pad at first sight. In reality, it’s so much more than that. I’ve actually started using MarkdownMail to write a majority of my content for TiPb. The language itself is extremely easy to learn. John Gruber has a Markdown Syntax guide on Daring Fireball that’s extremely easy to follow. It was only a matter of an hour before I was able to punch out articles in MarkdownMail on my iPad and publish well formatted articles without the hassle of writing in actual HTML. I’d highly recommend anyone that publishes frequently online to learn markdown, as it is much cleaner and makes editing dead simple.

As for MarkdownMail itself, you will basically type all of your content in Markdown language. You can also preview as you go. So if you aren’t sure of the syntax, try it and then preview. There is also a built in syntax reference shortcut that will take you directly to John Gruber’s guide online.

When you’re done writing content, you can choose to email the article as an HTML document, which is great if you’d like to send an email with bullet points or emphasis. I’ve used this feature for work emails and outlines. Alternately you can choose to just copy the HTML code to the clipboard and paste it wherever you’d like.

When publishing articles, I simply choose to email myself the markdown version. This way I can simply copy and paste it. Then all I’ve got left to do is embed images and video. It allows me to write wherever I want, whenever I want. One thing I do wish Markdown supported was accounts. It would be nice to sign in to an account within the app and have it bring in the same articles on my iPhone that I am working on from the iPad. This would give me even more freedom to write. It may be an unrealistic request but if it did happen, I’d be in markdown heaven!

Pros

  • Dead simple interface
  • Several export options when it comes to what you’re doing with your content
  • Built-in syntax reference guide for the markdown language
  • The app is a universal binary, so you can download on iPhone and iPad with one purchase

Cons

  • Would be nice to see a way to sync your markdown content across devices
  • Folders to sort drafts into categories would be a welcome addition
