The New York Times for iPad gets update, becomes really good Posted: 15 Oct 2010 03:48 PM PDT The New York Times has released a substantial update to their iPad newspaper reading app. The app — in a few words — is orders of magnitude better than the previous iPad offerings from NYTimes. Forbes reports:
Previously, The New York Times app for iPad was quite limited in functionality. However this new update adds not only polish, but also includes significant functionality extensions which should push mobile readership levels to new heights. • Access the latest articles and photos of the day • Customize the toolbar with your favorite sections of NYTimes.com • Read anywhere. After synching, articles and photos are available when offline” While the iPad is a great platform for both magazines and newspapers alike, up until recently most notable publishers haven’t really taken full advantage of Apple’s tablet for pushing content to their reader base. I suspect that — with a lot of the major players jumping on board with more innovative offerings similar to the NYTimes app — the newspaper business may be seeing some light at the end of the tunnel after all. Costco pulling iPod, iPhone, everything Apple from shelves Posted: 15 Oct 2010 03:12 PM PDT Well it looks like that tip we got last week about Costco pulling iPod and everything Apple from their US Stores, and iPhone as well from their Canadian stores is now getting confirmed around the web.
iLounge has added a potential reason — Costco didn’t get the iPad when Walmart, Target, Amazon, Verizon, AT&T, et. al did and this is payback. Or just a way to cut off their nose to spite Apple’s face. Given the money on the table, however, I wouldn’t be surprised if they came to terms and iPads started flowing from Costco’s shelves eventually. Either way, anyone going to miss Costco as their source for some things Apple? Costco pulling iPod, iPhone, everything Apple from shelves is a story by TiPb. PCalc 2.3 now available for iPhone, iPad [Give away] Posted: 15 Oct 2010 02:05 PM PDT PCalc, one of our favorite iPhone and iPad calculator apps (see Leanna’s PCalc review), has just hit version 2.3, and in celebration the developer has very kindly offered us a bunch of promo codes to give away. To you. But first things first:
Give away: Let’s make this one simple, shall we? Head on over to our iPad Apps Forum and give us your best, most creative way to let people know about the PCalc update (other than doing a promo code give-away or adding some angry feathered creatures to the app, of course), we’ll pick the ones we like best, and you’ll get a great app for free. Sound good? Then get going! Post your idea! (Promo codes only work in the US App Store, Apple’s rule, not ours, and they expire so if you get one, use it quickly!) Rhapsody for iPhone gets updated, includes album downloads Posted: 15 Oct 2010 06:51 AM PDT Rhapsody for iPhone and iPod touch has received a nice little upgrade. In case you are unfamiliar with the subscription based music service, it allows you to pay a monthly fee starting at $9.99 and you can download anything they have in their huge catalog of over 10 million songs. In their latest update they have included:
This is a significant improvement over the ability to only download playlists as you can pick and choose what you would like to download. This also could enable you to finally get rid of your Rhapsody player if you have one and finally be down to one all-in-one device. The update is available now and is free in the store. If you try it out, let us know what you think. [iTunes link, Rhapsody link, Thanks Chris for the tip!] by Brian Tufo Rhapsody for iPhone gets updated, includes album downloads is a story by TiPb. LiveClock for iPhone Updated – [Jailbreak] Posted: 15 Oct 2010 06:31 AM PDT LiveClock for iPhone is a simple tweak available to jailbreakers. The iPhone’s default clock app icon is forever stuck in time (10:15 to be exact). It may not be that big of a deal, but if you’d like your clock icon to reflect accurate time, LiveClock will simply turn your icon into a living, breathing (and ticking) icon. I’ve used this in the past and never noticed a decrease in battery life or an overall lag. I’d been wondering what happened to LiveClock when iOS 4.0 was released. A lot of apps seem to be getting updated since the release of limera1n and greenpois0n. This version looks like it was updated for iOS 4.x and for the iPhone 4’s retina display. I’m not sure about the retina display part but it looks pretty good to me compared to icons I know are updated to support Retina display. You can also find tweaks in Cydia for LiveClock such as color skins and themed out versions. Anyone else find any cool Jailbreak apps recently updated for iOS 4.x? How to Jailbreak iOS 4.1 via limera1n on a Mac [Jailbreak] Posted: 14 Oct 2010 07:20 PM PDT Wondering how to Jailbreak your iOS 4.1 iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad? limera1n was updated to support Mac today and after testing, it’s a pretty painless process. Pretty much what we’ve come to expect from Geohot. So here’s your TiPb-style walkthrough. You PC users should be able to follow along relatively easily as well since both jailbreaks are pretty much identical in nature. But as usual, here’s the standard disclaimer first: If you are at all hesitant about jailbreaking or don’t consider yourself an intermediate to advanced user, we recommend you pass this up.
