EliteProHD theme for iOS 4.1 [Jailbreak]

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 01:16 PM PDT

EliteProHD for iOS 4.1

EliteProHD is a fully customized Jailbreak theme that skins almost every aspect of iOS 4.1 from the standard apps to the iPhone keypad. It also come with a ton of skinned icons for Cydia apps and auto skins all appstore apps. What’s more, because of how iOS 4.1 works, themes can now use Retina Display versions of the UIImages, which designer BarsOverBeats has quickly implemented in his release of EliteProHD.

Included in the package is a stunning weather widget, an animated lockscreen theme, custom sounds, and numerous colored versions for more further customization. For advanced users, Photoshop templates are even included to make your own icons.

Look for it on the Cydia store, and check out more pics after the break.

Stephen Fry teases white iPhone 4 at T3 Awards

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 11:36 AM PDT

Steve Fry White iPhone 4

The White iPhone 4 has been spotted in the hands of Stephen Fry at the T3 Gadget Awards 2010. According to T3, Fry was talking about the Windows Phone 7 launch that he had attended earlier that day. When he reached for the new Windows Phone 7 that Microsoft had given him, however, Fry inadvertently pulled out his White iPhone 4.

Fry proceeded to taunt the audience and claimed that it was "The only white iPhone 4 currently in Europe".

With the white iPhone 4 still unavailable to order from Apple, people are speculating how Stephen got his hands on the device. Was it an aftermarket job or is he in possession of one of the 'ready-to-go' white iPhone units? If the latter, could we see the white iPhone 4 before the holiday season?

Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 coming in December, 3G sync enabled [Jailbreak]

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 07:56 AM PDT

Wi-Fi Sync, a jailbreak app available in the Cydia Store for $9.99 which allows you to sync content to and from iTunes over a Wi-Fi network, will be getting an update in December allowing for wireless syncing functionality over your iPhone’s data connection. That’s right, soon you won’t even need to be connected to your home or office WiFi network in order to get your iTunes sync on, let alone being tethered to your Mac or PC via a sync cable! From MacStories:

“Today Hughes confirmed the announced feature set and gave us a release date: Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 is coming this December, and the iPod Touch 4th gen will also be supported. As you can see on the official website, over-the-air sync for iTunes is still there, which means no feature has been scraped during development.”

Back in May, we did a review on the initial release of Wi-Fi Sync which was followed up by a subsequent article outlining some of the issues that were tied to the desktop client, and how to go about further correcting those issues. It turned out that the desktop client was causing problems when restoring your iPhone, and also presented issues with the iTunes Backup feature. So if you’re planning on going out and grabbing this app now, I’d highly suggest taking a look at those posts first — or simply hold off altogether until the 2.0 update hits Cydia.

We’re hoping that these kinks will be smoothed over in the follow-up release of 2.0, as the current version 1.1 has its obvious pros and cons given the issues we’ve seen. You can follow the developer’s twitter [@WiFiSync] to help you keep abreast of the progress on the update for this awesome jailbreak app. You can also visit their website for more information on the future update.

So, will you be purchasing or updating to Wi-Fi Sync 2.0 when it hits the Cydia Store in December? Sound off in the comments below!

It takes two to Tango – 3G video chat for iPhone 4

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 07:48 AM PDT

Tango video calls, as the name suggests, is an app that allows for users to enjoy the benefits of the front facing camera on the iPhone 4 to make a video call over their cellular 3G network. Tango Features:

  • Free video calling to your friends and family around the world, wherever you are

  • Call between iPhone and other smartphones on 3G and Wi-Fi
  • Populates Tango Contacts automatically from existing phone contact list
  • Invite friends and others by e-mail or text
  • Switch cameras and swap screens to show what is around you
  • Move between video to audio and back to video
  • Simple and easy to use
  • Create an account in less than five seconds – New profile not required

So we’ve got Apple’s own FaceTime, and now Fring, Yahoo!, and Tango (and once again Skype lagging far behind). Which one do you prefer and why?

Gaming Controllers for iPhone, Would You Want One?

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 06:43 AM PDT

After over three years of the iPhone being on the market, there’s still not a great “have to have it” gaming controller accessory. The iPhone, iPod touch, and now the iPad have become serious competitors in the gaming arena and while touch gesture games are awesome in their own right, there’s several games that would benefit from having an actual controller.

Apple loathes buttons, we already know this, but hardcore gamers don’t. If Apple wants gamers to consider iOS devices as competitive gaming platforms, there needs to be a market for it. That’s where Controller or Bust comes in. They’re setting out to develop the perfect gaming controller for the iPhone (and I’d assume other iOS devices as well). They’re looking for input from the iCommunity and going through the motions of what it will take to get one into production and eventually, to the market.

Benjamin Morisse, who’s heading the blog and project is already working towards the biggest challenge – getting into the “Made for iPhone/iPod” program. For those of you unfamiliar, all peripherals that will physically connect to an iDevice have to be approved before going to market. That’s why you see the “Made for iPhone/iPod” sticker on some products that you buy. Apple approves of it and doesn’t foresee it causing any compatibility issues (or damaging your device when it comes to cases and battery packs).

I remember playing Ravensword quite a bit when it first came out. One thing I really would have liked was an external peripheral that allowed me to utilize the whole screen instead of using the corners of the screen to control my character.

Any of you desperately waiting for an awesome gaming controller? What games do you guys use that you think would be a much better experience with a physical controller? Head over to Controller or Bust and give your input!

AT&T, Verizon stores to start selling iPad on October 28

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 06:19 AM PDT

iPad + Mi-Fi on Verizon

AT&T and Verizon Wireless stores are going to start selling the iPad on October 28. Verizon will be selling the Wi-Fi only iPad, but bundling it with their Mi-Fi mobile hotspot service.

The cost for iPad Wi-Fi + Mi-Fi on Verizon will be $630, $730, and $830, plus a no-contract $20 for 1GB on the Mi-Fi EVDO data.

“This is the perfect pairing for holiday travels,” said John Stratton, chief operating officer for Verizon Wireless. “iPad together with the nation’s largest and most reliable 3G data network allows customers to easily connect on the go wherever they are.”

“We’re thrilled to be working with Verizon Wireless to get iPad into the hands of even more customers this holiday season,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s COO. “iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before, and together with Verizon Wireless we’re offering an easy way to stay connected wherever you go.”

How Verizon Wireless customer service reps will tease handle the never-ending questions about the iPhone over the holidays is another story…

AT&T will be offering the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G at regular prices and under the existing plans.

“We can’t wait to showcase the amazing features of iPad Wi-Fi + 3G in our stores across the country just in time for the holidays,” said Glenn Lurie, AT&T President of Emerging Devices, Resale and Partnerships, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “With our breakthrough iPad data plans starting at just $14.99 and access to AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots around the country at no extra cost, our customers will have the best of both worlds.”

“We look forward to expanding the reach of iPad, allowing even more customers to experience the magic of iPad for themselves,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s COO. “As we approach the holiday season, we are very happy that customers will now be able to buy iPad Wi-Fi + 3G at AT&T Stores.”

Apple’s holiday iPad retail onslaught is coming so fast and so furious that I’m literally running out of jokes to make about where we’ll see it next… though I am about to set up a lemonade and iPad stand on the corner…

Anyone going to take Verizon up on their iPad + Mi-Fi?

[Verizon, AT&T, thanks Shawn for the tip!]
