A Google Voice app, GV Connect, and a Basic Interpreter, by way of Commodore 64, have both been approved and are now in the iTunes App Store.

These types of apps have been rejected, left in limbo, or pulled in the past. Following Apple’s recent change of developer license and publication of plain-language approval guidelines, they’re in the store.

AppleTV is a Airplay-compatible device, meaning it can stream video/sound from other Apple devices. We found out last night that it isn't just iTunes content that it will be able to broadcast. Any H.264 content from the web can be broadcast over Airplay to your HDTV.

That includes any video that can play on your iOS 4.2 device, like: Facebook video, YouTube, Netflix, Videos, BBC News, MLB and really anything else you can watch on your iOS device. That also includes videos built into Apps and magazine subscriptions too. All of this can be beamed to your AppleTV via Airplay.

John Gruber adds the following, from a friend:

Apps using the built-in media controller views get AirPlay out for free. Apps that don't (like Hulu) need to roll their own using AVFoundation.

So any iOS app that uses the built-in media playback views is going to be an AirPlay source.

iPad may be cannibalizing laptop sales by as much as half according to Best Buy CEO, Brian Dunn:

Mr. Dunn also said internal estimates showed that the iPad had cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50%

It will be interesting to see how much, if at all, they cannibalize iPod and MacBook purchases, and if they’re in it for the long haul or the cannibalization stops when most of the people who want an iPad get one.

$0.99 TV show rentals are too cheap according the Warner CEO Barry Meyer, and would hurt full season TV show purchases.

Meyer said the deal was not a good value for the studio subsidiary of Time Warner Inc., which sells permanent downloads shows such as “Gossip Girl” on iTunes for $2.99 each.

iOS 4.2 adds the ability to set individual text message tones to your contacts (finally!), but not custom tones, not even ringtones purchased from the iTunes Store. Apple seems to be keeping text tones completely separate from ringtones (and since they’re shorter and functionally different — they don’t need to keep playing for a long period of time until you answer — that may make some sense). Yup, that means you’re still limited to the built in choices.

People want custom text tones, however, so here’s hoping Apple adds a way to do that in one of the next few betas. (And not just through purchasing, because you just know the record labels would love to charge $0.99 for a 2 second 50 Cents text tone.)

Facebook Places has gone live in the UK. It lit up in Japan a few days ago as well. No love for Canada or many other countries yet. Still, even in locations where Facebook places has launched, it doesn’t seem to have slowed down FourSquare or Gowalla at all.
