Google Voice app, Basic interpreter hit App Store. New era begins? Posted: 17 Sep 2010 03:59 PM PDT A Google Voice app, GV Connect, and a Basic Interpreter, by way of Commodore 64, have both been approved and are now in the iTunes App Store. These types of apps have been rejected, left in limbo, or pulled in the past. Following Apple’s recent change of developer license and publication of plain-language approval guidelines, they’re in the store. Is AirView Apple’s TV attack on traditional media? Posted: 17 Sep 2010 03:48 PM PDT Is AirView going to be Apple’s go-to-marketed strategy, using an iOS 4.2 iPad or iPhone and Apple TV one-two punch combo get around tradition media? Following up on the discovery that iPad Netflix will stream to Apple TV, Seth Weintraub figures out the following:
John Gruber adds the following, from a friend:
When you think about using iPhone or iPad to locate and bookmark video — much faster than any remote driven TV device could ever do — and then shooting it over to enjoy on the big screen, the plan does seem to come together, doesn’t it? Best Buy CEO: iPad cannibalizing laptop sales by 50% Posted: 17 Sep 2010 10:03 AM PDT iPad may be cannibalizing laptop sales by as much as half according to Best Buy CEO, Brian Dunn:
It will be interesting to see how much, if at all, they cannibalize iPod and MacBook purchases, and if they’re in it for the long haul or the cannibalization stops when most of the people who want an iPad get one. Warners: $0.99 iTunes TV rentals too cheap Posted: 17 Sep 2010 08:17 AM PDT $0.99 TV show rentals are too cheap according the Warner CEO Barry Meyer, and would hurt full season TV show purchases.
I’m running out of quips to make about the oblivious myopia of old media. Seriously. [AP] Warners: $0.99 iTunes TV rentals too cheap is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
#FollowFriday @TiPb iPod nano 6 give-away Posted: 17 Sep 2010 05:42 AM PDT Want a shiny 6th generation iPod nano for free? Long story short, due to some shipping delays TiPb had to run out and buy some so we could get our review up in a timely manner. That means we have some extra. And that means we’re going to give them away to you. Now keep in mind these are review units — they’ve been opened, photographed, video recorded, and tested, but gently and lightly and are in mint condition with boxes and cables and all that. Want one? All you have to do is tweet this to enter:
We’re not telling which writers have iPod nanos to give away, so follow as many as you want to increase your chances. (Last time many people who could have won weren’t following and we had to pick alternates, so if you enter, make sure you follow.) Give away starts today and ends on Tuesday, September 21 at 12pm Cupertino time. Writers with nanos will pick the winners at random sometime Tuesday night and notify them via DM. Good luck and get tweeting! #FollowFriday @TiPb iPod nano 6 give-away is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Yes, iOS 4.2 text tones currently individual, not custom Posted: 17 Sep 2010 05:31 AM PDT iOS 4.2 adds the ability to set individual text message tones to your contacts (finally!), but not custom tones, not even ringtones purchased from the iTunes Store. Apple seems to be keeping text tones completely separate from ringtones (and since they’re shorter and functionally different — they don’t need to keep playing for a long period of time until you answer — that may make some sense). Yup, that means you’re still limited to the built in choices. People want custom text tones, however, so here’s hoping Apple adds a way to do that in one of the next few betas. (And not just through purchasing, because you just know the record labels would love to charge $0.99 for a 2 second 50 Cents text tone.) iPad now available in China, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru Posted: 17 Sep 2010 05:31 AM PDT iPad is now available in China, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, as previously announced, and it looks like celebrating new Apple gears is a cross-cultural, seemingly universal phenomena.
Cue the folk music. Then go enjoy your new iPads. [Gizmodo] iPad now available in China, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Facebook Places now in UK, Japan. Are you still using it? Posted: 17 Sep 2010 04:42 AM PDT Facebook Places has gone live in the UK. It lit up in Japan a few days ago as well. No love for Canada or many other countries yet. Still, even in locations where Facebook places has launched, it doesn’t seem to have slowed down FourSquare or Gowalla at all. Is Facebook Places available where you are? Are you using it? If so, let us know how it’s been working for you, if not, tell us what’s kept you away. iOS 4.2 features: Set individual text message tone Posted: 16 Sep 2010 08:58 PM PDT iOS 4.2 for iPhone seems poised to finally provide yet another hugely requested feature — set individual text message tones. Nice to see Apple knocking things off the nagging omissions list. Do I even have to ask if you’re going to be using this?
