iPod touch 4 parts hint at front FaceTime camera?

Posted: 05 Aug 2010 01:07 PM PDT

We just saw a case that hinted at a new rear camera on iPod touch 4, now images from a parts supplier show what looks like a front, FaceTime camera hole.

this part is clearly marked as an Apple part “Apple (c) 2010″. This stamp is visible in the full resolution image. The part is also stamped with April 29, 2010, indicating that the build date is relatively recent.

At WWDC 2010, Steve Jobs did say 10,000,000 FaceTime devices, not iPhones specifically, and we’ve seen how Apple/iTunes IDs instead of phone numbers could be used to connect the video calls, so the pieces do seem to be falling into place…

Do you want an iPod touch 4 with both a rear and front facing camera?

Macally Bookstand case for iPad – accessory review

Posted: 05 Aug 2010 12:08 PM PDT

Looking for an iPad case that doubles as a stand? Overwhelmed by the options? If you desire one that’s nice and slim, your search may be over. The Macally Bookstand for iPad is a form fitting, yet protective case that can be used as a stand when in landscape.

The iPad snaps into the Macally Bookstand at each corner. This makes it very easy to take your iPad in and out of the case. It also means that the corners are the only spots on the edge of the iPad that are protected. This doesn’t bother me; in fact, I prefer it. I’m a fan of slim cases that show off as much of the iPad as possible, so seeing the aluminum edges is a plus in my book. But if you’re of the opposite mindset and want as much protection as possible, this case is not for you.

The front of the case is thin and kind of flimsy, but it holds up really well. About a third of the way from the inside, there is a seem in it which allows it to bend. Bending the front of the case to the back and sliding the flap into the provided slip gives the case a triangular shape. Now you can have your iPad at a nice typing angle on a table or your lap, or stand it up tall for easy viewing. I was nervous that touching the iPad would cause it to fall when having it stand tall, but this is not that case. The Macally Bookstand is nice and sturdy.

The outside of the Macally Bookstand is made from a velvet-like material that feels nice. However, it is prone to collecting lint and dirt. It is fairly obvious on the black one I’ve been using, but I suspect that it wouldn’t look as bad on the gray one. I found that the easiest way to clean it is with an upholstery attachment on a vacuum cleaner hose – it only takes a few seconds.

If you're looking for a slim stand case for your iPad, check out the Macally Bookstand for iPad available now from the TiPb iPad accessory store.

Photos after the break.

Apple to patch Jailbreakme.com, PDF font exploit in upcoming software update

Posted: 05 Aug 2010 07:53 AM PDT

Jailbreakme

I think we all generally assumed this, but it’s nice to see Apple going on record as saying they’ll patch the PDF font exploit that currently allows the Jailbreakme.com jailbreak — and potentially any malicious hacker out there — to run code on an iPhone with just the tap of a web button. CNET scored the quote from an Apple spokeswoman:

“We’re aware of this reported issue, we have already developed a fix and it will be available to customers in an upcoming software update.”

That might not be great news for Jailbreakers in the waiting, but this is a really bad security vulnerability and Jailbreak or no Jailbreak, Apple needs to fix it as soon as possible. Apple of course currently only provides updates in the form of complete firmware re-writes, which means we’re likely going to have to wait for an iOS 4.0.2 (and hopefully a proximity sensor fix), or iOS 4.1 this fall when Apple introduces iPod touch 4.

If they could somehow work out a way to patch iOS, especially OTA, without having to wait until an entirely new firmware is ready it would go a long way towards speeding up their security response time for situations such as this.

Clear iSpot brings 4G WiMax to iOS for $29/month

Posted: 05 Aug 2010 07:44 AM PDT

clear ispot 4g wimax for iOS iPhone, iPod touch, iPad

Clear is now offering a small, rounded white box called iSpot that promises 4G WiMax hotspot action for iOS devices — iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad — for the very reasonable $29 a month.

iSpot is your very own 4G hotspot that lets you connect up to eight of your favorite Wi-Fi-enabled Apple mobile devices, giving you freedom to use Super Fast Mobile Internet™ on the go anywhere Clear has coverage. And major bragging rights over your friends who run their Apple devices over some old school connection.

If you’re in an area that offers 4G WiMax and are in the market for a hotspot/MiFi type solution, it’s certainly something to check out. Reportedly, the iOS-only restriction is via MAC address filter, so for network savvy types it could potentially be an even broader solution (though you’d have to check your TOS).

Anyone trying it out?

iPod touch 4 case leaks show camera, flash?

Posted: 05 Aug 2010 05:49 AM PDT

iPod touch G4 leak

As spring turns to summer and fall, iPad and iPhone leaks turn to iPod touch — witness the images above which claim to reveal iPod touch 4 complete with camera and flash.

HardMac claims the image came from a case manufacturer, the same who leaked the iPod mini (nano) camera last year, and that Apple typically provides advance size and shape information to these manufacturers. (Though clearly not for iPhone 4).

We’ll find out if these images are real later this fall at Apple’s annual music event. In the meantime here’s a question, do you want iPod touch to stay looking pretty much the same, albeit with Retina Display and (likely 3mp) camera, or do you want a more iPhone 4-style case redesign as well?

iPhone 4 Safari vs. Blackberry Torch 9800 WebKit — Browser Battles

iPhone 4 vs. BlackBerry Torch 9800 vs Captivate browser test

CrackBerry Kevin decided to put the brand new BlackBerry Torch 9800’s brand new BlackBerry OS 6 WebKit browser up against iPhone 4’s iOS 4 Safari and Captivate’s Android 2.1 Chrome in a good, old-fashioned browser battle royal.

The results? Win, lose, or draw, RIM has certainly come a long way when it comes to browsers. See the video above and CrackBerry.com’s play-by-play for more. Let us know your thoughts below.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 reviews — the competition

Posted: 04 Aug 2010 07:44 PM PDT

Read the full BlackBerry Torch 9800 Review and BlackBerry 6 Review

Kevin has done his usual monstrous job of reviewing RIM’s new BlackBerry Torch 9800 and BlackBerry OS 6. It almost seems hard to remember but before Android came around almost every competitive article here on TiPb was BlackBerry focused, and with the Torch 9800 RIM is hoping to regain that mindshare. Will they succeed? It’s $199 and exclusive to AT&T — familiar ground to US iPhone users. Then they took the best-in-class BlackBerry Bold 9700 keyboard and melded it with the, well, not-so-classy Storm touchscreen, absent SurePress, and gave it a Palm Pre-style slider. Is it the best of all worlds, sum better than the parts?

We’ll have to see. The specs don’t impress but RIM’s genius has always been battery and push messaging, not duking it out with the Apple’s and Android’s of the world on hardware. Is BlackBerry OS 6 then enough to keep the BlackBerry faithful happy? To bring those who have strayed back to the fold? To convert iPhone 4 users? Check out CrackBerry.com’s review then come back here and let us know your thoughts…
