HP acquires Palm for $1.2 billion, webOS to accelerate Posted: 28 Apr 2010 01:31 PM PDT HP is buying Palm for $5.70 a share, or roughly $1.2 billion. Does this mean we can expect HP netbooks and tablets running webOS sooner rather than later? Sure would beat Windows 7 starter, wouldn’t it? Says Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Personal Systems Group, HP:
Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein was also quoted:
The question remains, webOS or no, can HP fix the hardware and carrier issues that have plagued Palm since their re-invention, and can they do it fast enough for it to matter? PreCentral.net is covering the Palm/HP merger story as it develops and will be following the conference call starting at 5pm. Quick Review: Words with friends HD for the iPad Posted: 28 Apr 2010 11:00 AM PDT Words with friends by Newtoy $4.99 [iTunes Link] is a scrabble-like game for the iPhone and now, iPad. With Words with friends, you can play online against your friends, against random online opponents, or pass-and play on a single iPad. The nice thing about Words with friends is that it allows you to play with your friends at their own pace, with each move stored online. Push notifications are an option, however, so you know when your friend has made a move. There’s also an integrated chat/IM system so you are able to Some things that are in need of an update or fix, however. Account management is poor. Accessing your account details is annoyingly slow and if you want to change accounts, you have to delete the application and then reinstall it. (Yes, really!) Also, a recent update took away the eyeball icons that previously told you your opponent was actually online. Unfortunately, it also left behind the “Go to developers Facebook fan page” button, awkwardly and annoyingly placed right between the titles and the board. My last issue with Words with Friends is that you cannot re-arrange your tiles when its not your turn, which is a helpful way to prepare your next word. You also can’t delete a game once in play and you can not resign from a game when it is not your turn. So I have about 3 ghost games on the iPad at anytime, which I find endlessly annoying. All that being said, Words with Friends HD for the iPad is a good deal of fun, a great way to game with all your friends and to make some new ones. If you enjoy playing scrabble then you’ll enjoy this! Video and screenshots after the break!

Apple buys Siri voice-powered personal assistant Posted: 28 Apr 2010 10:33 AM PDT Apple’s buying spree obviously didn’t stop with chip wizards Intricity — they’ve snapped up voice-powered personal assistant Siri as well. The Siri iPhone app is currently still available in the US App Store [free - iTunes link]. No guarantees on how long that will last. What makes Siri so interesting is how they integrate a number of API together (including OpenTable, TaxiMagic, MovieTikets.com, Rotten Tomatoes, WeatherBug, Yahoo Local, Yahoo Boss, StubHub, Bing, Eventful Freebase, Citysearch, AllMenus.com, Gayot, and Wolfram Alpha) and combine Nuance’s voice recognition technology with their own, DARPA-funded server backend. All this comes togeter to provide a way to easily input and process a number of highly useful requests. As Robert Scoble puts it, you can talk to it and have it do everything from get you a taxi buy you movie tickets. Apple included VoiceControl for phone dialing, music playing, and general accessibility with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3.0, but Google has raised the bar with ubiquitous OS integration starting with the Nexus One. System-wide Siri might not just close that gap, but leapfrog it. [FTC via Scobleizer and TechCrunch, thanks Fassy for the tip] Apple buys Siri voice-powered personal assistant is a story by TiPb. Apple buys chip designer Intrisity for $121 million Posted: 28 Apr 2010 10:17 AM PDT Apple has bought chip designer Intrisity for $121 million. Given the rapidity and speed of the Apple A4 chipset debuted alongside the iPad, rumors have persisted that Intrisity was behind the new system-on-chip (SoC), but confirmation took a while to arrive. Intrisity was able to take the standard ARM Cortex A8 found in 650MHz flavor in the iPhone 3GS and competing smartphones and speed it up to 1GHz. That’s an advantage Apple reportedly wants to keep to itself. It follows on the heels of Apple’s previous acquisition of low-power fabless chip maker PA Semi, though a number of employees from that talent pool have reportedly left. (Some to be snapped up again by rival Google). Where this leaves the upcoming iPhone HD/iPhone 4G is uncertain, those ARM itself has announced a successor, the multicore Cortex A9, and we’d certainly love to see what Intrisity’s talent pool could do with that. (Also uncertain is what part, if any, this played in recent rumors concerning a potential Apple buyout of ARM itself). Either way, Apple is continuing to expand their ability to integrate and differentiate down to the chipset level, something non-integrated competitors like Google and Microsoft might have trouble matching. Steve Jobs to appear at D All Things Digital Posted: 28 Apr 2010 09:17 AM PDT A week before Steve Jobs almost certainly announces the 4th generation iPhone on or about June 7 or 8 at WWDC 2010, he’ll be joining Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher for D All Things Digital. Says Swisher:
And no doubt that iPhone HD/iPhone 4G incident. With the iPhone announcement a week later, we don’t expect a repeat of previous years where Jobs showed off new versions of iTunes or new products like the Airport Extreme, but we do expect a lot of the straight, borderline terse, but always insightful talk that have marked his previous appearances. June 1 is the date to watch. [BoomTown] Steve Jobs to appear at D All Things Digital is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Apple announces WWDC 2010, likely debut for iPhone HD/iPhone 4G — June 7-11 Posted: 28 Apr 2010 05:42 AM PDT Apple.com has just put up this year’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC 2010) page, and as suspected the dates are early — June 7-11 at the traditional Moscone West venue in San Francisco. For the last two years, Apple has also used the even to debut new iPhone hardware and release dates, with the iPhone 3GS in 2009 and iPhone 3G in 2008. The iPhone 2G was announced at Macworld in 2008, but its release date was made public at WWDC as well. All that to say it’s fairly likely WWDC 2010 will not only give us our first official look at the 4th generation iPhone (iPhone HD, iPhone 4G, iPhone G4, whatever floats your moniker boat), but word on when we’ll get it as well. While the iPhone has only been part of WWDC for 3 years, given the app-centric nature of the artwork (above) its fair to say it’ll be given the lion’s share of attention this year. UPDATE: It’s iPhone OS-centric to say the least. Apple Design Awards, the Mac need not apply, and the course tracks listed are predominantly iPhone OS (iPhone, iPad). That’s clearly where Apple is shifting their attention, at least for this year, and given their increasing iPhone OS earnings, it should come as no surprise. The shot’s been sounded people, the race to the next iPhone is on! [Apple] Apple announces WWDC 2010, likely debut for iPhone HD/iPhone 4G — June 7-11 is a story by TiPb. Microsoft says Android violates its patents as well, HTC pays up Posted: 28 Apr 2010 05:06 AM PDT Apple has sued HTC for patent infringement with Android almost certainly being the target, now it turns out Microsoft believes Android also infringes on their patents and HTC has just paid up. That means the free-as-in-Google smartphone OS isn’t free anymore — it’s just Microsoft who’s getting the money for it, and from the maker of the Nexus One, Desire, Legend, and Droid Incredible no less. That hurts Android. How the deal affects HTC’s position in the Apple patent infringement case, however, is unclear. If HTC can point to a licensed Microsoft patent for technology Apple claims HTC is infringing upon then that no doubt helps HTC and hurts Apple and the iPhone. With Windows Phone 7 Now lets see how Google — and Apple — respond. [CNET via Android Central] Microsoft says Android violates its patents as well, HTC pays up is a story by TiPb.
