iPad Wi-Fi + 3G orders preparing to ship!

iPad Wi-Fi + 3G orders preparing to ship!

Michael wrote in to tell us (and show us, see above) that his iPad Wi-Fi + 3G order was finally prepared to ship, and since Apple has previously confirmed they’d deliver on April 30, we’d say it’s none too soon.

Wi-Fi only iPads arrived on April 3 in the US while international iPad Wi-Fi and iPad Wi-Fi + 3G are set for pre-order on May 10 and delivery “late May” (which we’ll take to mean May 31 unless pleasantly surprised otherwise).

Anyone else get a notice? Anyone get an actual confirmed shipment and tracking number yet?

More proof of video iChat, possible Game Center integration in iPhone OS 4 SDK beta 2

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 01:02 PM PDT

video_chat_text

The evidence that iChat video is coming with the 4th generation iPhone continues to pile up with iPhone OS 4 beta 2 released just last week.

More code reveals that the iPhone must be registered for video conferencing along with the possibility of the feature only being used via Wi-Fi and not 3G data. So those who had hoped for video chat using their networks 3G connection may be a bit disappointed.

ACCOUNTNOTREGISTEREDMESSAGE = “This device has not been registered for video conferencing.”;
IMAVCHAT
COULDNOTCONNECTNOREMOTEWIFI = “The video call could not connect because a remote Wi-Fi connection could not be established.”; IMAVCHATDISCONNECTEDNOLOCAL_WIFI = “The video call disconnected because the local Wi-Fi connection was lost.”;

And as an added bonus it seems as if Apple is working on integrating video chat with “tentpole” number 6, Game Center. From the code below it appears that you will be able to initiate video chats with other Game Center users.

IMAVCHATERRORNOSUCHPLAYERID = “No Such Player ID”; IMAVCHATERRORNOSUCHACHIEVEMENT = “No Such Achievement”; IMAVCHATERRORUNRECOGNIZEDGAMEDESCRIPTIONHEADERS = “Unrecognised Game Descriptor Headers”; IMAVCHATERRORNOSUCHGAME = “No Such Game”;

iPhone OS 4 looks to be more promising than we originally had thought. Any of our readers excited just yet?

iPad finger nabber, nabbed!

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 12:03 PM PDT

ipad-finger-yank

Thanks to surveillance cameras and good detective work, one of the suspected iPad thieves who cost a man his finger has been caught and is presently behind bars. Brandon Darnell Smith 20, was picked up at his home and is being investigated in connection with the theft and injury. He has been charged with second-degree assault and robbery. The suspect was caught one day after the incident took place.

Takes off sunglasses, squints into the sun. I guess this thief got more than just the finger. Cut to Miami skyline, cue music… Yeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!.

(Ok best I could do, please add a better Horatio one liner in the comments!)

BlackBerry 6 gets unveiled, does it compete with iPhone OS 4?

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 08:57 AM PDT

Screen shot 2010-04-27 at 11.52.48 AM

RIM has just unveiled BlackBerry 6 (yes, single digit just like iPhone OS 4), their latest, greatest mobile operating system and they’ve got the Blackeyed Peas-strewn video highlight reel to prove it!

As always, our confederates from CrackBerry.com are all over the WES2010 launch event and bring us back all the BlackBerry 6 highlights:

  • Touchscreen friendly: The preview video makes it clear that BlackBerry 6 will be much more touchscreen friendly than what we have seen in the past from RIM, with new gestures, multitouch support and improved feedback for the user (kinetic scrolling, rubber banding). We’ve also heard that BlackBerry 6 will work well with non-touchscreen input as well and it looks like it should suit the optical trackpad.

  • Revamped UI and OS/Homescreen Experience: At first quick glance during the video BlackBerry 6 looks familiar, but then all of the new and improved features start to jump out at you… Search from Homescreen, a pull down for notifications (sweet!), pop-up contextual menus, etc.

  • Revamped Native Apps: It’s clear that RIM has put a lot of effort into key native apps as well. The inbox and contacts and media apps are all getting updates, and they’re looking good.

  • WebKit Browser/Rendering Engine: RIM’s new WebKit rendering engine is going to really speed up the web browsing experience while keeping it efficient. The browser gets much-needed features like tabbed browsing.

To us it looks like they’ve taken the solid BlackBerry messaging experience and tried to expand it with iPhone like music, video, and app abilities. In other words, they’re making a serious play for Apple’s market. Some of this stuff looks like Apple’s 2007 iPhone OS 1 demo of the iPod and Safari app’s — and that’s not a critique, Apple still hasn’t demoed any messaging equivalent to any BlackBerry from any era. If BlackBerry catches up with web and media, where’s Apple on messaging? (Mobile iChat video perhaps?)

There are still problems to be sure; BlackBerry 6 doesn’t address their OS’ increasingly outdated code base and the new app focus doesn’t fix the anemic storage limitations — but those problems don’t yet affect the average user and so really don’t exist outside bullet points and blogs.

Apple has revealed most of iPhone OS 4 (see our complete preview and feature walkthrough) and now RIM has show off BlackBerry 6.

Check out the boom, boom pow after the break and let us know what you think, should Apple be worried?

Facebook video goes iPhone and iPad compatible with H.264

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 08:39 AM PDT

Facebook iPad 1

Speaking of Facebook, it looks like they’ve joined the growing list of sites that are now providing HTML5 video for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad compatible playback. UPDATE: As noted in the comments, Facebook isn’t using HTML5, they’re pushing the video straight to the iPhone and iPad’s native H.264-compatible QuickTime player.

That list of compatible sites now includes YouTube and Vimeo, TED, Brightcove-powered sites such as New York Times and Time Magazine, CBS.com (in trial form),

Good news for us and for Apple, not great news for Adobe on the video front, as yet another reason for needing Flash bites the dust.

And boy does Hulu look like last-mover these days…

The new Facebook — are you concerned about your privacy?

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 05:24 AM PDT

facebook_error

Facebook recently announced some huge changes to how, where, and perhaps even why they operate — and it effects every Facebook users’ privacy. Short version: Facebook is “building the social web” by sharing your and your friends’ information with more apps, for longer, and via more places outside Facebook than ever before and they’re opting you into it by default.

If you’re the footloose and privacy-free sort who lives every moment online with little or no care about who knows what about you, then this likely doesn’t effect you one bit.

If you’re more guarded about your privacy and the privacy of your friends and families, if you’re concerned about who gets your information and where, then check out this guide to protecting your information on the new Facebook from Download Squad and get to clicking off those permissions (and no doubt cursing Facebook for not defaulting them to “OFF!” to begin with).

Facebook is obviously huge on the iPhone — one of the most popular apps of all time — so we’re curious what you think about these changes? Do you worry about your privacy online? Do these changes make you consider scaling back or removing your Facebook presence? Or do you figure the more information about more people available, the harder it will be to find anything about anyone specific?

Rhapsody turns on offline music, Spotify goes social

Posted: 27 Apr 2010 05:11 AM PDT

Rhapsody

Rhapsody for iPhone [free with subscription - iTunes link] has finally released an update to allow offline access to their music:

With a Rhapsody subscription, you can tap into over 9 million full-length songs, and download as much music as you want to your device. Create playlists for your commute, your workout or your flight – and download them instantly.

You can download and try Rhapsody for iPhone free for a week, and if you like what you hear, you can pony up $9.99 a month for a full subscription (which is locked to one iPhone).

It’s US only, but we don’t feel too bad for Europeans as Spotify [Free with subscription - iTunes link] revealed they were integrating Facebook Connect for the usual slew of new social interactivity, including sharing playlists, favorites, and likely the ability to mass shun songs and users who displease the collective (joking! A little!).

If you’re a Rhapsody or Spotify user and you check out the updated functionality, let us know how it sounds to you!
