Smule and “I am T-Pain” Bring Auto-Tune to iPhone

Posted: 04 Sep 2009 12:58 PM PDT

Smule and I am T-Pain [$2.99 - iTunes link] are bringing Auto-Tune to the iPhone. Or, more sarcastically, want an easy way to simulate what karaoke sounds like over a really bad phone connection? There’s an app for that!

We kid. (Not really, we’re just old). Okay, everyone who cringes at the mere thought of this app, be it caused by flashbacks of Cher, Kanye, or the titular T-Pain himself, stop reading now. Everyone else? Mashable has the details:

Seriously, how cool is that? Do you have any idea how many hours I could waste getting my mom to sing Auto-Tuned hip-hop? The best part is, after you record your songs (using built-in tunes or your own freestyle tracks), you can share them on Facebook or MySpace. Additional tracks will be available for purchase through the app in the future.

Yo, check it. This is for realz. Smash bomb. You’ll sound dope. Cash money bank! Get it or regret it, you know what they saying?

(Congrats on the new gig, Christina!)

Loopt and AT&T Work Out $3.99/month “Always On” Location Updates Deal for iPhone

Posted: 04 Sep 2009 10:55 AM PDT

Loopt [Free - iTunes link], which matches social networks with location-based services into one smoldering hot Web 2.0 sammich, has struck a deal with AT&T that will let them update their iPhone users’ location information even when the Loopt app proper isn’t running.

Yes, you read that correctly — the Loopt iPhone app isn’t being granted any extra special background multi-tasking sanction by Apple for the iPhone, this is strictly a server-to-server, Loopt-to-AT&T deal, and it will come at a price. BusinessInsider scores the scoop:

Loopt will first offer the new always-on service in a trial for 5,000 users. You can sign up at Loopt’s site using your iPhone’s MobileSafari browser. After the 14-day trial, the always-on feature will cost $3.99 per month, added to your AT&T bill.

BusinessInsider also renews that old rumor about how Apple is seriously considering limited multi-tasking in a future software update. And, yes, they’ll have to have something interesting to tempt users with in iPhone 4.0/4G next summer, so why not run with that? We’d like it!

But back to Loopt, anyone dying to give AT&T an extra $4 a month for precise stalking tracking of their friends and family?

TomTom’s iPhone Car Kit Delayed

Posted: 04 Sep 2009 04:10 AM PDT

Well it’s official, TomTom’s much anticipated iPhone car kit accessory will not make it out this summer like the company initially had planned. Rather, it has been delayed until October according to their website’s FAQ page.

The TomTom car kit availability was originally planned for this summer. But we have decided to take some extra weeks in order to deliver the highest quality on this innovative product. So, the car kit will become available this October on www.tomtom.com.

We suppose it is best to delay the accessory for a few weeks in order to insure you, the consumer, can purchase the very best TomTom has to offer. It could have been worse and the kit could have been delayed until next year, right?

AT&T Updates on Status of iPhone Tethering

Posted: 03 Sep 2009 08:08 PM PDT

no_tethering_for_you

Following up on today’s announcement that AT&T would be making MMS available to US iPhone users on September 25, TiPb asked the logical followup — tethering?

We expect to offer tethering in the future. By its nature, this function could exponentially increase traffic on the network, and we need to ensure that some of our current upgrades are in place before we can deliver the expanded functionality with the excellent performance that customers expect.

They’re likely referring, at least in part, to their ongoing rollout of 850 MHz 3G — most recently in New York and New Jersey — which should put more width in their bandwidth.

So are we happy enough with MMS to cut AT&T some slack on tethering, or do we want it all and now?

AT&T MMS Already Working on iPhone 3.1 Beta 3, or Just Testing?

Posted: 03 Sep 2009 05:21 PM PDT

mms-working-3

AT&T is promising MMS on September 25, along with a software update to enable it. Sounds like iPhone 3.1 to us. Show it off at the September 9 Music Event along with the third generation iPod touch, then release it a couple weeks later to coincide with MMS?

WhenWillApple reports that AT&T MMS is already working for them in Florida under iPhone 3.1 Beta 3. and while it might just be another random network test, could it also be a sign of what’s to come?

Anyone else rocking AT&T MMS on iPhone 3.1 Beta 3? Say where and when in the comments!
