iOS 6 roundup: Maps, Facebook Integration, Passbook, Siri enhancements, and more

If you missed any of our WWDC 2012 coverage and what iOS 6 will bring with it this Fall, here's your chance to catch up on everything we've covered when it comes to Apple's next iteration of iOS.

Maps

Probably the biggest news was the addition of Apple's own Maps app which will be powered by TomTom. Maps will come stock with turn-by-turn navigation, traffic info, and a new feature called Flyover.

Siri additions and enhancements

Siri received quite a few updates under iOS 6 including iPad support, integration with many car manufacturers, and several new features. Here's what we know so far:

Passbook

Passbook is a brand new way to store and save airline apps, boarding passes, and more all in one place. Many different services and Passbook apps are already available such as express check at hotels, Target cards, movie tickets, coupons, and more.

Photo Stream sharing

Photo Stream sharing will allow you to create separate streams (similar to how you'd create albums currently). You can then share those separate streams with whoever you'd like. Have one with family for vacation pics and one with mom and dad for baby pics. They'll also be given the ability to comment and like photos native in iOS.

Mail enhancements

  • Multiple e-mail signatures - Finally! If you want a different signature for your work, home, and other e-mails you can do so by adding signatures on a per-account basis.

  • VIP Mailbox allows you to add all the important people in your life to a VIP list and their messages will automatically be filtered into a new VIP mailbox that appears under your default inbox.

  • Apple has also made adding attachements and files easier in iOS 6. Just tap like you would to add rich text or highlight and you'll see an option to add an attachment.

Facebook integration

In iOS 5 we saw Apple integrate Twitter into iOS natively. This year the same will happen with Facebook. Post status, upload pictures, and more without needing a third party app.

Additions to Notification Center

Notification Center didn't receive a ton of attention during the keynote but two new features did make an appearance:

FaceTime over the cellular network

FaceTime has only ever been available for us on a Wi-Fi network since it's release in iOS 4. iOS 6 is about to change all that and you'll soon be able to FaceTime wherever you are, Wi-Fi or 3G/4G.

Even more iOS 6 coverage

We'll be keeping an eye on additional features of iOS 6 and updating this list as we hear more. If we missed anything, let us know!

WWDC 2012 keynote now available online

WWDC 2012 keynote now available online

If you missed any of our WWDC 2012 coverage or if you just want to see the keynote for yourself, Apple has posted the announcement up on their events page.

If the keynote isn't showing up for you make sure you're using either Safari or attempting to view it on either your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch as it doesn't seem to work in other browsers.

The keynote hasn't appeared yet in iTunes for actual download but we'll update you as soon as it does. For now you can stream it view the link below.

iOS 6 beta 1 now available in Apple Developer Portal

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 02:08 PM PDT

If you're a registered developer with Apple you can now jump into the Developer Portal and grab the first beta of iOS 6 as well as the Xcode 4.5 developer preview.

As of now all downloads appear to be going smoothly but you if you have issues downloading the beta, keep in mind Apple's servers are probably going to get slammed pretty quickly.

As with every beta, keep in mind it's only meant for developers. Selling your developer slots to unauthorized users goes against Apple's developer agreement and your license could be suspended indefinitely if you are caught selling your slots.

We also advise against our readers and members of the general public buying slots. This is a perfect time to get scammed or have your credit card information stolen. Scammers are aware that people are out there who want to gain access to the beta and they're fully willing to take advantage of that.

Betas are typically full of lots of bugs and aren't meant to be run on anything but test devices. Installing a beta could cause many issues and could even render many apps, or even worse, your entire device useless. We can't caution enough that if you aren't a developer, it's best to stay away from beta versions of iOS.

iOS 6 and what it means for jailbreak

iOS 6 and what it means for jailbreak

Another WWDC keynote has come and gone and with it we've gotten to take a look at what iOS 6 will have to offer iOS users this Fall. If you jailbreak you may already be wondering what iOS 6 will mean for you.

We've been jailbreaking our iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches for years in order to get ahold of certain features that Apple just couldn't or didn't want to give us yet. Every year and with each new iteration of iOS Apple closes that gap. This year was no exception and Apple did give us a few things that we previously could only achieve via jailbreak like FaceTime over the network. But is what we got enough? Will iOS 6 leave just as much of a need to jailbreak?

I think so and here's why.

Themes and a new Home screen

iOS 6 fresh coat of paint

The Home screen on the iPhone and iPad has remained pretty much unchanged for the most part since the conception of iOS. Us here at iMore though maybe it was time for a new Home screen or at least a refresh. iOS 6 will be, at least aesthetically, almost identical to iOS 5 and every iteration of iOS before that minus some minor visual enhancements to menu bars from what we can tell.

If you love the functionality iOS provides but are bored with the same interface and design, you'll still need to jailbreak in order to solve that problem.

Quick-reply

One of the biggest requests we always get and something on most people's iOS bucket list is quick reply for messaging. Unfortunately there was no mention of adding a quick-reply feature. If you'd like to be able to have a better handle on messaging and how you interact with it, you'll most likely still need to jailbreak iOS 6 in order to do so.

Notification Center enhancements

iOS 6 does bring some additions to Notification Center that we previously could only get through jailbreaking. One of the largest is the addition of Do Not Disturb.

Do Not Disturb will do something simliar to what LockInfo and IntelliscreenX have done for the jailbreak community for quite some time. You'll be able to tick on Do Not Disturb when you don't want to be bothered by notifications. Your notifications will still come through to your iPhone or iPad but your screen will stay off and no notification sounds will be played.

It appears that this feature will be all or nothing though and you don't have the ability to choose which notifications you want and which you don't want. It'd be nice to see more control and the option to turn off notifications for just games or just phone calls if you'd like.

Siri enhancements

While we would like to see Apple actually open up the Siri API to developers, we kind of figured that wouldn't happen. Apple did, however, make some great enhancements to Siri that may be "good enough" for some. Not only will Siri be coming to the iPad, she will be able to launch apps on her own, send out tweets, and provide restaurant and sports data to you without actually entering a specific app manually.

We will also see features like Eyes Free start to pop up as well as other tweaks and enhancements. Developers can't yet bend Siri to their will but iOS will add the ability to do a lot more with the technology natively.

Better multitasking and gestures

While Apple's new Macbook lines will see new gestures and multitasking actions, there wasn't much said about the iPhone or iPad and whether or not iOS 6 will add any new functionality in that area which probably means there won't be any.

If you enjoy using apps such as Zephyr and have grown used to having more than what Apple's given you stock, you probably won't be too happy without your jailbreak when it comes to gestures.

Mail enhancements

VIP mailbox will be feature in iOS 6

While there wasn't too much added when it comes to native iOS mail, we did get the addition of a VIP inbox that allows you to create custom lists and messages from those people will be filtered into the VIP area of your inbox.

No mention was made of better filters, color coding messages, or, sadly, multiple e-mail signatures. The latter being something that many users have wanted for a long time now. At this point, it's pretty much a necessity for most if you manage your work, home, and other e-mail accounts from your iPhone and iPad. So if this is something you can't live without, you'll still need to depend on apps such as Mail Enhancer to get the job done.

Update: Some users are reporting that screenshots shown during the keynote do in fact show multiple mail signatures. We'll let you know once we can verify this.

Update 2: Yes, iOS 6 will offer mail signatures on a per account basis. This was probably be the most wanted feature when it came to mail enhancements for iOS.

Better folder options

Folder-enhancements-in-iOS-6

This is another area that could have used some improvements and didn't see any at all. The ability to nest folders inside of folders is something many jailbroken and stock users have been asking for since folders first cropped up in stock iOS. The caps are annoying and the fact that they're different on iPhone and iPad make it hard to organize devices in the same manner. I can fit 20 games inside a folder on my iPad while I can only fit 12 in a folder on my iPhone.

I'd like a sense of familiarity and streamlined workflow when switching between the two and the folder issue puts a damper on that. For now, jailbreak apps like Folder Enhancer and Infinifolders will continue to be indispensable for many.

Conclusion

Everything you need to know about Apple's next generation iOS 6 operating system for iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple TV

Even though WWDC 2012 brought some nice additions to iOS and we have a lot to look forward to this Fall, I have a feeling many users will also be looking forward to a new jailbreak for iOS 6 just as much. Without the addition of quick reply, better folder functionality, mail enhancements, and some other much needed refinements, jailbreak will probably still be a necessity to many.

We've got tons of time between now and when the official version of iOS 6 drops this Fall. Last year iOS 5 was jailbroken even in its beta stages and jailbreak devs had plenty of time to release beta jailbreak tools for developers to work out the kinks before an official release.

When iOS 6 drops this Fall, how many of you will be waiting for a jailbreak tool before updating? Anybody plan on going stock on iOS 6 and giving up their jailbreak? Let us know!

Apple quietly releases new iPad Smart Case

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 01:38 PM PDT

New iPad Smart Case WWDC 2012

Apple quietly released a new iPad Smart Case, amongst the many other announcements at WWDC 2012.

When the Apple Store went back online shortly after the keynote, many people noticed that Apple had snuck in a new iPad accessory into the store, 'The iPad Smart Case."

The 'Smart Case' is compatible with both the iPad 2 and the new iPad, and covers both the front and back of the device, giving your device extra protection. It's made out polyurethane and works with all current 'Smart Covers', giving you the same functionality, in both 'typing' and 'watching' positions. You can customise your 'Smart Case' with Apple's free lazer engraving service.

The new 'iPad Smart Case' is available for $49.00 in Grey, Black, Blue, Green, Pink and 'PRODUCT (Red)'.

Apple quietly lays the 17-Inch MacBook Pro to rest, refurbished units still available

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 01:06 PM PDT

Although Apple unveiled some rather fine looking hardware today at WWDC 2012 when it comes to their MacBook Pro lineup, they also  shortened their list of available hardware by quietly removing the 17-Inch MacBook.

Nothing about the fact was mentioned in the keynote but taking a quick look through the Apple online store tells the story quite well. The 17-Inch MacBook Pro is nowhere to found if you're looking to purchase it new.

That said though, there is a small bevy of them under the refurbished section so if you totally had your heart set on a 17-Inch, you can head there and possibly score a deal on some 2010-2011 hardware.

iOS 6 and OSX to add VIP e-mail inbox

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 01:03 PM PDT

iOS 6 and OSX to add VIP e-mail inbox

Yet another little gem from WWDC is a new VIP inbox for your iOS and OSX e-mail apps, allowing you to separate the wheat from the chaff, and see only messages from designated contacts.

In iOS, you'll receive SMS-style notifications when a VIP e-mails you, and those VIP designations will sync up over iCloud to your Mac and other iOS devices. You'll always be able to tell which contacts are VIPs by the star next to their name. Also, you'll now be able to add photos and videos to messages in iOS much more easily, which I consider a godsend. The fact that there isn't an attachment button in the compose e-mail window already is mind-boggling.

There are a ton of new features in iOS 6; be sure to check 'em out over here!

Apple's iOS 6 site now live

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 12:43 PM PDT

Apple has kicked off their iOS 6 minisite to showcase all of the awesome new features that were announced at WWDC today.

All of the stuff we covered, including revamped Maps, expanded Siri, Facebook integration, new Passbook, and the new tricks in Safari all have their own little spotlight.

We took a bunch of pictures from the conference, but it's great to see some clean official renderings of all of the new stuff. The reactions to maps in particular sounded great, and I really can't wait to see it in action. Head on over to Apple to take a look for yourself, but stay tuned - we'll have lots of thoughts and reactions from today's announcements shortly. We also have our own hoppin' iOS 6 page if you want to get a full run-down of what's going on.

Guided Access accessibility feature coming to iOS6

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 12:08 PM PDT

When iOS 6 becomes available for the masses it will be bringing along a new accessibility feature with it as introduced today at WWDC 2012.

Guided Access  - as it is called, will allow users to selectively remove portions of a screen from use, disable hardware buttons or even disable certain portions of an app.

On stage, Apple shared the example of autistic children, with whom you may only want to allow certain functions of apps.  Users will be able to effectively block out any settings you wouldn't want to allow access to, but the uses could go well beyond that.  This feature will also be able to be open up new possibilities for users in stores, museums, in schools and even restaurants. It's a pretty awesome feature to have included and it will surely help a lot of folks out there.

iOS 6 to support iPhone 3GS and up, coming this fall, beta available today

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 12:01 PM PDT

WWDC kicked off with a splash this afternoon, and prominently showed off iOS 6 and its many, many new features.

The bottom line? It's coming out this fall with a beta available for developers today, and will be compatible all the way back to the iPhone 3GS (which is a bit of a surprise) and up to the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

iOS 6 will also be available for 4th generation iPod touch devices and later.  On the tablet side, iOS will be supported on the iPad 2 and the 2012 third-gen iPad. Sorry, original iPad owners. As you can see, there are a ton of new features in iOS 6 - you can read about all of the big ones on our iOS 6 page.

We'll have lots more news coming from WWDC this week, so stick around.

Notification Center adds Do Not Disturb and Remind Me Later features in iOS 6

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:55 AM PDT

Notification Center will receive some good updates in iOS 6 including some new features such as Do Not Disturb and Remind Me Later which will give you even more fine-tuned control over the way you use notifications.

Do Not Disturb will be a welcome addition to many and does exactly what you'd think it does. Toggling on Do Not Disturb will allow notifications to come through but your iPhone or iPad won't make any sounds and the screen won't light up. Anyone who has ever been woken up in the middle of the night to a Words With Friends notification will no doubt appreciate this. This should also keep those pesky text message sounds from interrupting your phone calls. Previously you could only achieve something like this if you jailbroke your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Remind Me Later is also a new addition to iOS and will integrate directly to your Phone app. If you receive a phone call and can't take it right now but want to remember to call that person back later, you'll now be able to tap the new Remind Me Later button. The feature can also use geo-fencing technology to remind you when you get to a certain location if you choose.

Both features will come stock in iOS 6, which will be available this Fall.

Apple introduces Passbook as part of iOS 6

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:47 AM PDT

Pasbook app for iOS 6

Apple shows off the very clever Passbook app for iOS 6.0

Today at WWDC Apple introduces the Passbook app as part of iOS 6. Passbook is the new way to store airline apps, boarding passes, starbucks app, movie tickets.

Passbook is the easiest way to get all your important tickets and information into one place.

Let's say you want to buy movie tickets via Fandango. Purchase your tickets, and as soon as you get to the theatre - your tickets just pop right up on the screen.

Apple demoed different passes that are available with the new Passbook app including a target card, starbucks card, baseball tickets, app store gift card, boarding passes and more.

Passbook will also work for expres check ins to Hotels as well as coupons for local stores. Get to your destination - and what you need just pops up on the screen.
When you use the coupon or ticket or are ready to delete - the app "shreds" the card for security purposes.

Apple announces new Maps app, complete with turn-by-turn navigation, Siri integration, and 3D models

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:44 AM PDT

Apple announced their much-rumored in-house Maps application at WWDC today.

Maps includes a lot of great new features, including 3D buildings, turn-by-turn navigation, local search with some back-up from Siri.  Maps also includes live traffic information that's anonymously crowd-sourced from iPhone and iPad owners. The live traffic data will also update your estimated time of arrival as you progress on your journey. Your navigation view will also show on the lock screen which is really nice. Asking your iPhone "are we there yet?" will even work through Siri, but you'll likely be spending more time using Siri for local search, such as to find the nearest gas station.

Our WWDC liveblog has it all! Check out the rest of the announcements there!

Photo Stream to enable native sharing in iOS 6

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:41 AM PDT

Apple just announced that Photo Stream will be getting an update in iOS 6 that will allow you to share images from your Photo Stream directly friends, family, or whoever you choose in just a few taps.

Once you share the photo, they'll also be able to comment and like your photos without ever leaving the Photos app.

The new Photo Stream sharing feature will show up as an additional tab in your Photos app. You'll see the tabs you're used such as albums, events, and locations but you'll see a new cloud tab for Photo Stream sharing. Choose whatever photos you'd like to share from your Photo Stream which will create an album that you can name. Select the people you'd like to share those photos with and you're done. You can edit settings and change your share settings whenever you'd like straight through your Photos app.

Photo Stream sharing will also support commenting so the friends and family members you've shared your photos with can comment and like your photos directly within Photo Stream.

Photo Stream was demoed along with lots of new iOS 6.0 features at WWDC in San Francisco.

Smart Banners in Safari for iOS 6 to offer quick shortcuts to app

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:41 AM PDT

Safari for Mountain Lion

A new trick in Safari for iOS 6 announced at WWDC 2012 today was Smart Banners.

These are clever little banners that slide down from the top of a screen and offer those browsing from an iOS device the ability to launch directly into an app or download it from the App Store. This is awesome news for developers that want to offer visible, smooth links from their web pages from their mobile site. Apple also announced a few new things in Safari for iOS 6, including iCloud tab syncing.

Watch our liveblog to catch the WWDC announcements as they happen!

FaceTime over cellular enabled in iOS6, bringing unification to Apple ID and phone numbers

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:39 AM PDT

We're still taking in the list of features to be found in iOS 6 but one major feature announced at WWDC 2012 will surely please a lot of folks out there who use FaceTime.

Yes, absent for too long - FaceTime over cellular is coming enabled in iOS 6  - and that's not all.

In addition to FaceTime working over cellular networks, Apple will also be bringing unification of Apple ID and phone numbers.

In iOS 6, when it becomes available this fall, you will be able to answer calls anywhere you wish to do so; be it on your Mac, your iPhone or even your iPad.

Facebook integration announced for iOS 6

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:29 AM PDT

As expected, Facebook integration with iOS 6 was announced at WWDC today.

It will include the ability to log-in through the settings menu, share to Facebook through apps like Safari, Maps, iTunes, Game Center, and lots of other native applications.

Facebook will also be in the Notification Center so you can launch into a status update right from there. The App Store is now peppered with Like buttons. Contact list and calendar integration is a no-brainer, which will also be available on the Mac. Finally, there will be an API available for developers that want to get in on the fun.

More to come! Keep watching our liveblog!

Eyes Free to integrate Siri directly into your car

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:29 AM PDT

Eyes Free, just announced at WWDC 2012 will allow Siri to integrate directly into your car so you can keep your hands on the wheel.

Apple has already partnered with several car manufacturers to bring Eyes Free to market.

Siri integration in your car will be coming soon via Eyes Free integration. Apple has already received  commitments from several car manufacturers including BMW, GM, Chrysler, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Honda, Mercedes, and more to build it right into their vehicles. Eyes Free will link into your car via a button by the steering wheel that will allow you to communicate with Siri while driving without ever having to take your hands off the wheel.

Eyes Free will also expand its language support across several countries including Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Italian, German, Korean and French for Canadian users.

More to come! Keep watching our liveblog!

Apple OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion will bring PowerNap updating feature

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:24 AM PDT

Apple has now unveiled a new feature of Mac OS X Lion 10.8 at WWDC 2012.

PowerNap is the name and it's certainly an interesting addition to the OS but it will only be making its way select devices such as the second-generation MacBook Air and Next Generation MacBook Pro. So what does it do?

PowerNap will auto-update your system while it is asleep. App updates, System updates and even backups can now all be done in what could be considered, downtime for yourself. As noted on stage, it's power efficient so it shouldn't draw too much power from the battery in order to complete the tasks at hand.

Siri in iOS 6 coming to iPad, to offer sports, movie, and restaurant data, able to launch apps

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:22 AM PDT

iOS 6 was announced at WWDC today, including a new version of Siri with a heavy emphasis on sports, restaurants and movies.

You can now ask for and receive tailored information about sports scores and stats on players. Restaurants will now return detailed information about hours, Yelp reviews and offer the ability to book a table through OpenTable. As for movies, you can now ask about particular actors, in addition to fetching local movie times and Rotten Tomato reviews. Siri can launch apps that you ask it to, which is a nice, simple addition. Finally, Apple is partnering with a bunch of car manufacturers to offer hands-free voice activation, much like Vlingo's current inCar solution.

As you can see above, there are a bunch of new features. There's also a lot of new localization, including language support and broadened local search.

There's lots more coming from WWDC, so keep an eye on our liveblog!

The new Safari unveiled at WWDC12

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:11 AM PDT

Safari for Mountain Lion

The new Safari demonstrated at WWDC 2012

Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of Mac demonstrated the all new Safari during the WWDC12 keynote today in San Francisco.

Safari has always been intertwined in the Mac OS - but it brings even more functionality in Mountain Lion.

Safari Unified Search

Just type a few characters into the unified smart search field.  Mountain Lion Searches matches in both your bookmarks and browsing history.

If you were browsing on another device - there is a new feature called iCloud tabs - which lists all the pages you have open across all your other devices.

The beauty of this is that you can pick up browsing right where you left off.

Tab view

Tab view has been updated for Mountain Lion. You can now use gestures to visually navigate your tabs.

Mountain Lion lets you use multi touch gestures to zoom in and out - zoom further out and you have a live view of all your tabs - a great way to browse.

The new scrolling architecture makes scrolling lightning fast.

Share in Mountain Lion

Share allows you to do just that - share about anything right from Safari.  Federighi displayed great visuals to the sharing functionality. You can share a photo to imessage, or share a photo.

Select the person to share a message and just like that - you have shared via iMessage. The new notification center tells you when your friend responded. Fluid gestures allow you to get in and get out of all these apps.

Twitter direct message comes in as a notification - or if you want to tweet while in Safari - you just summon up a tweet sheet and tweet away - even with dictation.

All in all, Safari looks to be receiving a huge and needed upgrade in the new version of Mountain Lion.

There's lots more coming from WWDC, so keep an eye on our liveblog!

AirPlay mirroring officially comes to the Mac in OS X Mountain Lion

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:11 AM PDT

Apple has officially announces at WWDC 2012 that AirPlay mirroring will be coming to the Mac in OS X Mountain Lion.

You can now stream all your content straight from any Mac running OS X Mountain Lion right to your Apple TV wirelessly. The possibilities for this are really endless and should afford a whole new way for people to use their Macs.

AirPlay mirroring has been available for iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and new iPad under iOS 5 but has yet to make its way to the Mac until now. You'll be able to stream movies, music, games, and more straight from the screen of your Mac to your big screen via your Apple TV 2nd or 3rd generation, no cables or adapters required.

Snow Leopard and  Lion users will be abel to take advantage of Air Play mirroring all for a very reasonable  upgrade price of $19.99

Game Center for OSX to offer cross-platform gaming with iOS

Posted: 11 Jun 2012 11:10 AM PDT

One little gem for gamers at WWDC today is a new Game Center for OSX that will allow players to play with friends on iOS when games are available on both platforms.

Combined with pixel-for-pixel mirroring that was also announced for the new version of Mountain Lion, this is going to be pretty sweet. The WWDC demo showed CSR Racing playing on an iPad against a user on a MacBook.

Apple also took the opportunity to boast that they've got over 130 million accounts, 5 billion scores posted per week, and that 67 of the top 100 games have integration. Also, you can now explicitly challenge your friends to beat your Game Center high scores.

More news coming out of our WWDC keynote liveblog as it happens!
