App Giveaway: Paper Monsters for iPhone and iPad

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 02:47 PM PST

Paper Monsters is a new platformer game for iPhone and iPad. In the game’s world, everything is made out of paper and cardboard, including your character. It’s a classic 2d side-scrolling platformer placed in a 3d environment.

I am loving this game! Paper Monsters has great graphics that are also very fun. My favorite little feature of the graphics is that sometimes things like trees and bushes pop up in front of or behind you in the 3d atmosphere.

Dive into the world of Paper Monsters and watch a living world made out of paper, cardboard, and a few cotton balls unfold right before your eyes.

Paper Monsters takes all of the classic 2d platforming elements, combines them with cutting edge graphics and then packs it onto your iPhone or iPad.

Facebook files for IPO, $1 billion in profit from $3.7 billion revenue, 845 million active users

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 02:46 PM PST

Facebook for iPad coming late January with Timeline feature

Facebook has filed their IPO (initial public offering) registration and, in the process, revealed some rather astounding numbers related to users, revenues, and profit margins. Since Facebook is one of the most popular apps on iPhone and iPad, and a lot of those users are also iOS users, needless to say, they caught our attention.

Facebook saw $3.7 billion in revenues and around $1 billion in profits in 2011 — a healthy 27 percent profit margin — with significant growth each year. The jump in profits year-over-year sits at 65 percent, with revenues growing at a rate of 88 percent.

At last report, Facebook saw around 845 million active users with about half of them (483 million) checking the social network on a daily basis. In addition, Facebook processes roughly 2.7 billion ‘Likes’ and comments per day with users uploading an average of 250 million photos daily. Around 100 billion friendships were made in 2011.

Facebook also had more than 425 million monthly active users who logged into Facebook from a mobile device in December 2011. Although they weren’t specific about mobile operating systems, the Facebook for iPhone app is historically known for being the #1 app in the App Store, with mobile adoption increasing significantly after a recent update improving performance and integrating Timeline support.

Although it’s impossible to extrapolate the numbers based on Apple’s recent quarterly earnings call, assuming roughly half of those were iPhone users wouldn’t be an unsafe bet.

That’s huge. And it’s also interesting given the persistent rumors that Facebook would be getting into the mobile space and going after those users. Google did it with Android. Amazon is doing it with Kindle Fire.

Given Facebook’s tensions with Apple of late, which are rumored to have resulted in the planned integration of Facebook into iOS 4 to get scrapped (leaving things open for Twitter in iOS 5), and caused a public spat over the iOS social music network, Ping, Facebook could well be next, and now they’ll have even more money and resources to put behind it.

Greenpois0n Absinthe updated, offers bug fixes and Leopard compatibility

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 02:15 PM PST

Absinthe, the untethered jailbreak utility for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S has been updated to version 0.4 bringing compatibility with Leopard as well as a few other bug fixes.

  • Mac: added support for OSX 10.5, PPC and Intel CPU
  • added consistency check on startup to make sure required files are in place
  • Windows: fixed bug in payload generator that might cause a crash

If you are already jailbroken on iOS 5 or iOS 5.0.1 on your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 there isn’t a need to re-jailbreak with the latest update. This update seems to address issues with the process itself opposed with issues on board the device.

In any case, it’s good to see the jailbreak “dream team” hard at work to bring Absinthe to more users after it saw wide adoption after initial release.

If you’re looking for even more tweaks and utilities to install, check out our guide to the best jailbreak applications for iOS 5 as well as the other jailbreak resources below. You can grab the new version of Absinthe from our downloads section as well.

Apple releases Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 update

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 01:30 PM PST

Apple releases Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 update

Apple has released Mac OS X Lion version 10.7.3 and while there doesn’t seem to be any new goodies for iPhone or iPad users, if you’re running Apple’s desktop OS, it’s waiting for you via Software Update.

OS X Lion was first shown off at Apple’s Back to the Mac and presented as taking iPhone and iPad innovations back to Apple’s traditional computer lines. While some of the changes have been welcomed with open arms, others have experienced birthing pains, and hopefully this and future updates help take the rough edges off. Either that, or 10.8 better give us another solid Snow Leopard-ing of the OS.

Details below.

The 10.7.3 update is recommended for all OS X Lion users and includes general operating system fixes that improve the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac including fixes that:

-Add Catalan, Croatian, Greek, Hebrew, Romanian, Slovak, Thai, and Ukrainian language support -Address issues when using smart cards to log into OS X -Resolve issues authenticating with directory services -Address compatibility issues with Windows file sharing

For detailed information on this update, please visit this website: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5048.

Camera-equipped iPod nano may still be in the works

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 11:17 AM PST

Some fresh pictures of a camera-equipped iPod nano have slipped out, indicating that Apple’s music player may be due for an update soon. Apple usually updates the iPod nano every fall, but this year the iPhone 4S hogged the spotlight at Apple’s traditional event. The 2009 iPod nano had a camera, before ditching it for the current form factor in 2010. Aside from the camera, the overall design doesn’t seem to have changed much from the previous generation.

As Georgia aptly points out, the iPod nano isn’t really hurting for a camera; instead, the iPod nano really should start changing into a smartwatch accessory, complete with notifications pushed over Bluetooth, hosting lightweight apps, while still playing music. Motorola and Sony Ericsson have both taken a stab at this idea, but Apple will likely be able to pull this off in a way that really resonates with their fans.

Anybody out there own an iPod nano? Do you ever find it lacking in functions, or does it already do what you need it to? Is a camera really needed?

BiteSMS vs Messages+ for iOS 5: which should you use?

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 11:12 AM PST

The amazingly functional and customizable BiteSMS takes on the deeply integrated and easy to use Messages+ in a battle of the jailbreak messaging apps

Are you jailbroken on iOS 5 and wondering whether you should purchase BiteSMS or Messages+? Both applications add quick reply functionality and make messaging more functional. But which is a better choice for you?

BiteSMS for iOS 5

BiteSMS has been a long time favorite when it comes to messaging enhancement applications. Many competitors have come and gone while BiteSMS seemingly manages to stay at the top of its game.

One thing that sets BiteSMS apart is its ability to customize almost every aspect of your experience. You can choose what buttons you’d like to show up on your quick reply windows such as send, open, close, mark for later, Skype, FaceTime, templates, and more. The quick compose feature provides the option of auto-populating contacts. You can choose for it to auto show favorites, the last person you messaged, and more.

If you send a lot of international text messages, Bite allows you to buy credits to use on their own network. I don’t necessarily recommend it as a way not to have traditional text messaging as the rates aren’t cheaper than most carriers domestic rates. They are, however, cheaper than most carrier international texting rates. AT&T, for example, charges $10/month for 100 international messages. After that, it’s $0.20 per message. You can set up per contact rules for sending messages as well. So if you have certain contacts in a different country, only then will Bite utilize your credits. Bite’s prices are as follows –

  • $6 for 50 SMS credits
  • $12 for 105 SMS credits (includes 5 free credits)
  • $24 for 215 SMS credits (includes 15 free credits)
  • $60 for 550 SMS credits (includes 50 free credits)
  • $120 for 1200 SMS credits (includes 200 free credits)

While BiteSMS has a sleek user interface in its own right, you can definitely tell it isn’t something made by Apple. People who choose to theme and don’t like the stock look of iOS may actually prefer this. Those of you who like to stick with the stock look may have an issue with it. It’s also worth noting that BiteSMS is compatible with both LockInfo and IntelliscreenX.

Messages+ for iOS 5

Messages+ is an update of the messaging enhancement app TLert. The update not only brought a more streamline experience but deep integration into iOS 5. It literally looks like something Apple would release.

While BiteSMS aims to bring you an array of different customizations and user controls, Messages+ aims to be an easy to use add-on that just works. There’s next to nothing to configure. You just enable Messages+ and set up a quick compose gesture and you’re on your way. Messages+ also comes built-in to IntelliscreenX.

If your main reason for wanting a messaging enhancement app is to not have to stop what you’re doing to compose a message, Messages+ will provide this functionality without any added icons. It simply adds a quick reply and quick compose function to the default iOS messaging app.

While Messages+ ties in nicely with IntelliscreenX, it is not currently supported by LockInfo. If you’re a LockInfo user, BiteSMS is going to be your best option. We don’t know if LockInfo will add support for Messages+ in the future.

BiteSMS vs Messages+ – which is better?

There’s no arguing that BiteSMS still has plenty more features and controls than Messages+. It will really come down to what you personally need from a messaging enhancement application.

I personally prefer Messages+ over BiteSMS as I don’t send that many international texts and just desire quick reply and quick compose functionality. I also like the stock feel of iOS and Messages+ gives me that. There are no added icons or tons of settings to configure before you start using it. Enable it, set a quick gesture for composing, and you’re done.

There are no doubt users out there who care more about control and functionality than interface and ease of use. For those of you that think heavily of these things, BiteSMS is probably going to serve you much better over the long run. Let us know what you decide on and why. Make sure to check out our other resources below for tons of jailbreak apps, themes, tips, and more!

MasterCard hints that Apple is on board for contactless NFC payments

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 09:38 AM PST

Apple NFC (Near Field Communication) rumors have been reported for over a year now, and while the iPhone 4S shipped without RFID technology of any kind, a recent interview with MasterCard’s Ed McLaughlin hints Apple might still be getting into the mobile transaction game. McLaughlin said that he didn’t know a handset manufacturer who wasn’t working to  integrate PayPass via NFC in their phones. When prodded about Apple, Ed shied away, and said he couldn’t mention partners by name, but did go on to say “Anytime someone with a major base moves forward, it advances what you’re doing” when asked if Apple was a vital part of pushing contactless payments into the mainstream. Of course, stores also have to provide support on their end. McLaughlin said, ”I think as merchants provide these better interfaces for consumers–a better way of transacting–I think any consumer-focused technology provider would want to take advantage of it.”

We’ve heard plenty of rumours floating around about Apple including NFC in the next iPhone, and MasterCard themselves have been pretty aggressive in enabling it through a separate accessory. NFC was an expectation for the iPhone 4S, but seeing as there still isn’t a lot of widespread support for Google Wallet, maybe it will take a big player like MasterCard to really get mobile NFC rolling. It seems like smartphone manufacturers are more than happy to put NFC in their devices, but if common sensors like PayPass aren’t ubiquitous, it won’t be a selling point for consumers, and those manufacturers will just cut the feature to save on manufacturing costs.

RIM is already all-in with MasterCard’s NFC standard, and if Apple is too, maybe 2012 will actually end up being the year this stuff catches on. Let’s put it this way – if the iPhone 5 doesn’t have NFC built into it, would you consider switching platforms so you could get on the NFC payments bandwagon?

Supposed debug leak shows iPad 3 with quad-core A6 chip and LTE

Leak shows iPad 3 with quad-core A6 chip and LTE

The iPad 3 could be coming packed with a quad-core A6 chipset and support LTE speeds according to a source who claims to have access to the unannounced, unreleased device. BGR reports:

From the data in the photos, which contain the output from an iPad 3 using a development and debug tool called iBoot, we can infer plenty of information about the upcoming iPad 3. [...] The new processor will also apparently be a quad-core model, making the upcoming iPad 3 the fastest iOS device ever, we have been told.

The veracity of the data is, of course, uncertain. Previous rumors have claimed that iPad 3 production has started, as well as Foxconn issuing plans to build 5 new iPad production facilities in Brazil.

The A6 chipset noted in the debug tool, if accurate, carries a model number of S5L8945X with the iPad units themselves carrying model numbers of J1 and J2 (iPad 3,1 and iPad 3.2 respectively). This falls in line with what was uncovered in iOS 5.1 beta code. The rumor calls for one model being WiFi-only, and the other adding full support for LTE/CDMA/GSM. This should allow for Apple to release just one SKU across data-equipped iPad units for all major carriers, rather than a special LTE model for the limited markets that currently support it.

As far as rumors of when the iPad 3 might hit the streets, speculation of a March 2012 seem likely with Apple sticking to their historical release cycle, but we won’t know for sure until Apple makes the announcement.

40,000 petition Apple for “ethical” iPhone 5 manufacturing

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 09:00 AM PST

SumOfUs has launched a petition to get Apple to create the iPhone 5 in a fully ethical manner, and has already garnered over 40,000 signatures. The petition is particularly critical of Apple’s use of n-hexane, a harmful glass cleaner which can cause neurological damage over long-term exposure. Inhumanely-long working hours are also called into question.

Apple CEO Tim Cook remains adamant that the company is doing its best to ensure the well-being of manufacturing employees abroad. Even within the fast-paced technology sector, however, Apple is well-known for cultivating a high-stress culture, and those standards are imposed on just about everybody Apple works with. Under these conditions, it’s no surprise that basic humanitarian standards take a back seat to shipping a product. That said, I might agree with this petition, but I really doubt Apple or Foxconn will make any sweeping changes that hurt their bottom line.

If you’re interested in signing the petition, hit the link below.

[We'll post links to the petitions for HP, Dell, Sony, Nokia, Motorola, HTC, Amazon, Lenovo, Toshiba, Samsung, and every other technology company who operates in similar manners without enjoying the link-bait status that seems to drive online media attention. We want everyone held to the same, high standards. - ED]

Neil Young claims Steve Jobs preferred listening to music on vinyl

Posted: 01 Feb 2012 02:20 AM PST

Canadian musician Neil Young has claimed in an interview that Steve Jobs preferred listening to music played back on vinyl rather than digitally via an iPod. Speaking to Peter Kafka and Walt Mossberg at the D: Dive Into Media conference, he told them that he discussed the prospect of offering higher quality digital music downloads with Steve Jobs.

"Steve Jobs was a pioneer of digital music, and his legacy is tremendous," Young said. "But when he went home, he listened to vinyl. And you've gotta believe that if he'd lived long enough, he would have eventually done what I'm trying to do."
Young claims that modern digital music is so highly compressed that 95 percent of the audio content is lost. He believes that Steve Jobs was working on a solution to the problem but since his death, there has been no further discussions with Apple.

Incipio Hive Honeycomb dermaSHOT Silicone Case for iPad 2 review [Giveaway]

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 09:59 PM PST

“The Incipio Hive Honeycomb dermaSHOT Silicone Case for iPad 2 looks interesting and feels great but it doesn’t fit exceptionally well around the edges, ruining the overall affect.”

The first thing you’ll notice about the The Incipio Hive Honeycomb dermaSHOT Silicone Case for iPad 2 is the look. It’s covered in more hexagons that a Dungeons & Dragons map. This honeycomb texture isn’t superficial either — it’s thick and structural and designed to absorb shock and keep your precious iPad from being hurt by accidental bumps or drops.

The hexagram design will stand out from a crowd -- if that's what you want!

The hexagons are a bold look for Incipio, something you’re either going to love or hate. I like that they’re taking risks and doing something different.

The feel is wonderful. The Incipio Hive Honeycomb dermaSHOT Silicone Case for iPad 2 is soft but not slippery or slimy. It almost feels like it’s been covered in baby powder, but that’s probably just the anti-static coating.

The major flaw in the design, however, is that the Incipio Hive Honeycomb dermaSHOT Silicone Case for iPad 2 is too soft to stand up to the long vertical edge of the iPad 2. It lacks both the elasticity to stay tight and the structure to keep position. And so the Incipio Hive Honeycomb dermaSHOT Silicone Case for iPad 2 hangs from the mid-point and makes me feel like it could just slide off at any moment. I don’t know if the case is too big or they just need a better material.

The same material that makes it soft and easy to put on also makes it more difficult to stay on

On the bright side, the Incipio Hive Honeycomb dermaSHOT Silicone Case for iPad 2 comes in black, red, and gray, slips on and off easily, and exposes all the ports. It also comes with screen cleaner and a screen protector to keep the front safe and sound.

The Good

  • Excellent grip
  • No stickiness
  • Screen protector included

The Bad

  • Side edges aren’t snug enough
  • Highly distinctive look

The conclusion

The Incipio Hive Honeycomb dermaSHOT Silicone Case for iPad 2 looks interesting and feels great but it doesn’t fit exceptionally well around the edges, ruining the overall affect. It was just too loose.

The giveaway

Simply leave a comment below telling us how the Incipio Hive Honeycomb dermaSHOT Silicone Case for iPad 2 could make your life easier and you’re entered to win one of your very own! Giveaway starts now and ends Sunday, February 5 at midnight PT. U.S. shipping address required for delivery.

First BlackBerry 10 superphone pictures leak. Or, RIM’s homage to Android’s homage of iPhone

Posted: 31 Jan 2012 06:25 PM PST

First BlackBerry 10 superphone pictures leak. Or, RIM's homage to Android's homage of iPhone

New images have leaked showing what may be code-name London, or the first of the next-generation BlackBerry 10 superphones expected to ship from RIM at the end of 2012 and… they look like Android phones that look like iPhones. Kevin Michaluk from CrackBerry.com pitches them a phone-sized PlayBooks but after being teased with the far more original looking, Porsche Design-style concepts we saw a few weeks back, I can’t help but be a little disappointed.

Sure, Apple didn’t invent the black slab form factor, but in an era that was then dominated by front-facing QWERTY devices, including the Treo, Windows Mobile Standard, Nokia communicators, and, yes, BlackBerrys, Apple inarguably popularized them. They popularized them to such an extent that Google smartly, swiftly switched gears from making Android BlackBerry-like to iPhone-inspired. RIM dabbled in that form factor as well, with the near disastrous Storm line, and now the expanded Torch line.

But to lead with it into the new generation of BlackBerrys, and now, some 5 years later? (And yes, once again, I informed you thusly.)

A big part of me hopes not. I’m tired of iPhone clones. Sure, Samsung has proven that the closer you are to copying Apple without being Apple, the more money you make in the not-Apple market (just look at Motorola and HTC profits by way of comparison), but Apple didn’t get to where they are — sitting on one of the largest bankrolls in history — by copying the BlackBerry or Treo back in 2007.

They looked at the market. They saw a problem with existing offerings. They tried to solve it with something new. RIM has had 5 years since then — 5 years to study Apple, look for the iPhone’s weaknesses, and figure out how to take then next great leap forward. To figure out how to do to Apple what Apple did to Palm and RIM.

They wasted a lot of that on the Storm and Torch and PlayBook. Hopefully they’re not wasting one precious moment of it now.

I want BlackBerry back. I want them putting pressure on Google and Apple. I want more great phones to choose from. I don’t want Jonathan Ive to be the lead designer-by-proxy of yet another me-too phone line.

Delight me RIM. Surprise me. You’ve got a new CEO. He has great contacts. I’m holding out hope for you.
