iOS 5 jailbroken in less than 24 hours

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 04:21 PM PDT

Last night Musclenerd posted a tweet saying that iOS 5 has indeed been jailbroken using the limera1n exploit. In his tweet he posted a picture of an iPod touch 4 Springboard with the Cydia icon placed nicely on it.

The full jailbreak story after the break!

The Apple keynote ended less than 24 hours ago, and the iOS 5 beta dropped to developers in even less time and the devs have already managed to jailbreak the firmware. According to @musclenerd, Cydia runs smoothly. This, however, is a tethered jailbreak and there is no word on when the tool will be released. So, if you are already jailbroken on a previous firmware, stay there, do not upgrade to iOS 5 beta 1 if you like your current jailbreak.

What do you all think of this? The jailbreak came quick, but do you think Apple will fill the hole in a new beta of iOS 5? Let us know in the comments.

David Ashman talks LockInfo post iOS 5 notifications

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 03:56 PM PDT

David Ashman is the developer behind LockInfo, the popular notification and lock screen information app for Jailbreak — and he’s just seen Apple add their own version of both those features to iOS 5. So how does he feel about that, and what does it mean for the future of LockInfo?

Check out the video above, shot at WWDC 2011 the day after the keynote to see what he says. (Spoiler: While Apple may fill the needs of casual users, LockInfo is going to make the pros very, very happy for a long time to come.)

iBooks update brings ‘read-aloud’ feature

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 03:27 PM PDT

iBooks for iPhone and iPad has been updated to 1.3 and includes new read-aloud feature that reads the book to you. It’s only available for “enhanced” books and some books will even highlight the words as they are read to you.

  • Help your children learn to read with the new read-aloud feature included in select children’s books from the iBookstore. The read-aloud feature uses a real narrator to read the book to you, and in some books, it will even highlight the words as you read along.
  • Enhanced books can now automatically play audio or video included with the book.
  • Makes iBooks more responsive when opening very long books.
  • Addresses an issue where some books may display the same page twice.

This will be a great feature for children learning how to read. If you have any books with this feature enabled, let us know what you think!

iTunes 10.3 now available with beta iCloud support

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 03:27 PM PDT

With the iCloud unveiling yesterday, Apple also announced that a new version of iTunes and a beta version of iCloud would be available now (with the rest rolling out in the Fall). Users have been reporting iTunes 10.3 downloads becoming available over the past 24 hours. Now, it appears to be available for everyone.

Keep in mind only some iCloud services are available now (and they’re still considered beta). The rest will be rolled out this Fall. You should already see changes to the App Store on your devices as those were rolled out wireless yesterday.

iTunes 10.3 will let you do the following right now –

  • Automatic downloads – Purchase music from any device or computer and automatically download a copy to your Mac and iOS devices

  • Download previous purchases – Download your past music purchases again at no additional cost. Your purchases are available in the iTunes Store on your Mac or in the iTunes app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer on the iTunes Store.

The rest of the services will be available this Fall, along with iOS 5.

Did you download it already? Any bugs so far or is it working for you like Apple said it would?

Poll: Will you still jailbreak post iOS 5?

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 03:18 PM PDT

So will you still Jailbreak now that Apple has included notifications, lock screen info, and so many other features into iOS 5? Granted most of them don’t do as much as their Jailbreak counterparts, but you aren’t required to Jailbreak to use them either.

Are you a hardcore Jailbreaker and you’re going to do it no matter what? Are you taking a more wait-and-see attitude? Or has Apple finally done enough to convert you from #TeamJailbreak to #TeamPure?

Vote in the poll up top and give me your reasons in the comments below!

iOS 5 contains references to new iPhone and iPad models

Posted: 07 Jun 2011 03:12 PM PDT

As with all new beta firmware, it appears there are references to new hardware in iOS 5. I expected there to be references to a 5th generation iPhone model but there are also placeholders for new iPad models as well. TUAW is reporting that they found references to not only two difference 5th generation iPhone models, but 2 different iPad models as well.

I’m assuming the two iPhone references are to the GSM and CDMA models of whatever the 5th generation iPhone will be called. I definitely didn’t expect to see two new iPad models this soon. And even more interesting, there are no new references of a fifth generation iPod Touch. Considering Apple typically releases new iPods in the Fall, we normally see code pointing in that direction around this time.

From TUAW -

Specifically, there are declarations buried in the iOS system files that reference “iPad3,1″ and “iPad3,2.” Likewise, “iPhone4,1″ and “iPhone4,2.” The iPhone 5 will be a 4th generation unit because the iPhone 3G was technically 1st generation. This throws off the numbering and confuses everyone, so don’t fret if you were confused….

What do you guys think? I’m going with the fact that they just stuck place holders in there for future iPad iterations. They’ve done it in the past. I am, however, intrigued that there are no iPod references found this close to what should be an iPod refresh.

    iOS 5 beta gallery

    Posted: 07 Jun 2011 07:18 AM PDT

You’re flooding us with screen shots of iOS 5 (sometimes without removing your personal info first — please do that!), and we’re going to keep adding them here. Here’s some of what we’re seeing:

    • iPod app is dead. Long live Music and Video apps. (More consistent with iPad, iPod touch.)
    • Tap and hold a lock screen notification icon, then slide to view it
    • If you hate the new style notifications, you can turn them off or switch back to the old popups
    • You can update more than one app at once
    • The square toggle sliders are round now
    • There’s a “buy more storage” button in iCloud
    • There’s a wireless iTunes sync setting
    • Calendar now has week view in landscape mode
    • Move Camera Roll photos to existing albums or create new ones
    • Add multiple Twitter accounts in Settings
    • Storage usage by app
    • On-device software updates
    • Open Safari links in background
    • SMS/iMessage are the same app, sends depending on what receiver can handle (AT&T/Verizon must hate that)

Photo gallery after the break, and we’ll update if/when we’re sent more.

Find My iPhone updated to include Email notifications

    Posted: 07 Jun 2011 07:18 AM PDT

Apple has quietly updated its Find My iPhone application to include a couple of very handy new features. After you have updated the app, when you try to locate one of your devices that is currently offline, you will receive an email to tell you when it has reconnected to a network.

You can also now delete a device that is attached to your account, without the need for it to be online. Previously you could only do this from the MobileMe web portal. If you don't have Find My iPhone you should get it as soon as possible. It is completely free and gives you an easy way to locate your iOS device, remotely lock it or completely wipe it, if it is stolen. We have a guide to show you how to set it up right here.

iOS 5: What we didn’t get

    Posted: 07 Jun 2011 07:17 AM PDT

Now that the excitement has died down after the WWDC keynote, let's consider what is missing from iOS 5. There has been a huge amount of speculation over the last few months about what to expect. This often leads to huge disappointment when the actual details are revealed. These are a few of the areas that are still lacking in iOS 5. Of course things could still change and get added into iOS 5 prior to its debut in the Fall.

    • System Wide Voice Control, not a single mention of this. It is still an area where iOS needs to catch up with Android.
    • SMS Messaging application is still basic compared with the jailbreak alternatives like BiteSMS; despite what Scott Forstall would like you to believe. No quick reply options to be had and you still have to go into the app each time you want to reply.
    • Themes and Customizations are still missing. The 20 icon screen layout is here to stay for at least until iOS 6. Still No customized Email tones either.
    • Folder Passwords would have been a simple addition to iOS 5, a simple way to keep your personal information and apps away from others.
    • Synergy, this one was a bit of a long shot but would have been a great addition in iOS 5. The ability for your iPad and iPhone to talk and work together would have been great. HP can do it why not Apple?
Are there any more glaring omissions from iOS 5 that you can think of? Let us know in the comments!
