iOS 5 features: LED flash, custom vibration patterns for alerts

Apple is once again upping their accessibility game with iOS 5, this time adding LED flash and custom vibration patterns to better inform users when calls and other alerts come in.

It may not be as sophisticated as BlackBerry or Android notification lights, but it’s an option in iOS 5. Will you use it?

[Thanks Dylan]

New settings for Automatic Downloads now available

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 03:18 PM PDT

If you take a look at your App Store settings, you’ll find some new options for Automatic Downloads. This new feature allows you have new purchases made on other devices automatically download to the device you’re accessing the settings from.

For example, let’s say I purchase 1Password Pro, a universal application for iPhone and iPad, on my iPhone. If I have Automatic Downloads for apps enabled on my iPad, 1Password Pro will automatically download to my iPad over the air. This feature is available for music, apps, and book purchases.

For those of you who may be concerned about how much data this may be using, turn the “Cellular” setting to OFF so that purchases are only automatically downloaded when connected to Wi-Fi.

Personally, I will have all options set to ON on my iPhone, but apps set to OFF on my iPad. I do not want iPhone apps installed on my iPad; if I purchase a universal application, I’ll download it manually to my iPad. What about you? Do you plan to enable Automatic Downloads? And if so, for which combinations of music, apps, books?

iOS 5 beta, iTunes 10.5 beta are live (ish)

As promised during the WWDC 2011 Keynote today, Apple has posted betas of iOS 5, iTunes 10.5 (required to install iOS 5), the iOS 5 SDK, Xcode 4.2, and Apple TV OS.

There are versions for both Verizon and GSM/AT&T iPhone 4, as well as iPhone 3GS.

Developer.apple.com is getting slammed, of course, so whether you can get in or not is a different story, but once in it’s all there for your developer testing pleasure.

If you grab it, let us know how it works for you, and how you enjoy all the features Apple showed off today!

The future of Lockinfo [jailbreak]

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 02:10 PM PDT

David Ashman is a well known jailbreak app writer with his Lockinfo package from Cydia. Almost everyone who jailbreaks has, or has heard of, Lockinfo. He attended the WWDC keynote today, and to say the least, he feels ripped off.

Apple finally figured out that you need to do more than show a big blue popup on the lockscreen to provide users with useful information. What they added is a direct rip off of Peter Hajas' MobileNotifier (at least he got hired by Apple). But what is it missing (at least based on early views… I'll admit I don't have the developer seed yet):

No emails on the lockscreen. (Redacted… screenshot shows it)
No quick previews.
No direct replies via integrations with other apps.
No status bar icons.
No plugin API.
No weather (on the lockscreen).
No RSS feeds.
No Twitter integration.
No Facebook integration (coming soon).
No favorites quick dial/text/facetime.

He goes on to say that Apple did make it look pretty, but it’s still lacking some of the major conveniences that he, himself, has implemented into his own jailbreak package, such as quick previews, direct replies, and drop down lists.

These are just a few of the things he has posted in his latest blog. He says he will continue to develop for Lockinfo and keep pushing out updates. To read his entire blog post, hit the link at the bottom of the post.

What do you think of Ashman’s comments? Do you think he is valid in stating this? Do you feel as though Apple ripped off his idea? Let us know in the comments.

iOS App Store updated to include Purchase History

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 01:06 PM PDT

The App Store on iPhone and iPad has been updated to include your purchase history. It’s located under the “Updates” tab.

When you tap “Purchased”, you will see tabs for all your purchases and ones that are not on that device. Apps that are not installed on your device have an iCloud icon with an arrow inside that will download the app when tapped. Tapping anywhere else on the app row will take you to that app in the App Store so you can learn more about it. To search for apps in either list, just pull down to reveal a search field.

Having access to my purchase history is a welcomed addition to the App Store. What are your thoughts on the purchase history?

iOS 5: State of the Jailbreak

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:26 PM PDT

Apple’s WWDC 2011 main keynote is over and we now have tons of iOS 5 news to digest! We’re getting revamped notifications, iCloud, new mail enhancements, and tons of new developer APIs.

But what does iOS 5 mean for all the jailbreakers out there? With the addition of OTA updates, we can’t be sure just yet. I’m assuming you’ll be prompted to install an update. If you wish to remain jailbroken, perhaps you can just ignore those? No one knows as of yet.

Obviously, if you’d like to keep your jailbreak and/or unlock, you’ll need to stay away from any beta version or release version of iOS 5 until the jailbreak community tells us different. This is even more crucial for unlockers. It’s yet to be seen how they’ll even get updates for iOS yet.

With new notifications coming our way, apps like LockInfo and MobileNotifier may not be worth the jailbreak anymore. As I said previously, with Peter Hajas, creator of MobileNotifier, now at Apple, I can see why. The new notification system in iOS 5 has some striking similarities to his MobileNotifier concept.

Regardless what you jailbreak for, steer clear of iOS 5 if you’d like to keep your jailbreak. If you plan on going stock the minute iOS 5 drops, let us know why in the comments. If you don’t, let us know that too!

iTunes Match: all your music synced to all your devices via iCloud

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 12:06 PM PDT

iTunes Match, another iCloud app, will basically function as a locker for your iTunes library. If you have music that isn’t purchased from iTunes, it will match the media in your library with content available in iTunes and allow you to stream it to your devices wirelessly. (What happens if something you have isn’t available in iTunes? Do you still need to sync it?)

Apple is saying this process will only take minutes, not hours. All the content will be DRM free and have the same benefits of purchased music. Any songs will be matched and upgraded to 256kbps AAC DRM-free files.

This part of iCloud won’t be free, however. It’ll cost you $24.99/year. I think this is pretty reasonable for what the service will offer. What do you guys think?
