TiPb Picks of the Week

TiPb.com Picks of the Week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they're iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they're fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

Super Stickman Golf – @chrisoldroyd

This week's pick is Super Stickman Golf. Since my brother bought an iPad 2 we have started playing a few online games. This is one of the most fun to play. Super Stickman Golf is a simple graphics game but a highly sophisticated physics type golf game.

The idea is obviously to get a little white ball in a hole in as few shots as possible. That is where the golf parts comes in; after that it's not golf at all. You can stick your ball on walls and ceilings, stop the ball in mid air, it is pretty much golf gone mad but a lot of fun.

Now the latest update has brought multi-player for up to four players to the table, it is a great choice for some fun with your friends.

SBRotator — @andrewwray

SBRotator is a jailbreak tweak that lets you rotate your iPhone Homescreen into landscape orientation. The mod is slick, clean and intuitive with a number of great features to make it a complete jailbreak package you can use without any hassle. SBRotator won’t add any icons to your springboard, but instead packs a number of options right into the stock Settings app.

You can scale your icons down in size to help keep a clean look while your iPhone is in landscape mode, and the developer went the extra mile by letting users choose whether or not to keep icon labels when in landscape to help cut down on visual clutter. You can also mimic the way the iPad handles landscape rotation by altering rows/columns, rotate your wallpaper and set which orientation you want your iPhone to default to after a restart or respring. Another great feature is the ability to force stock apps like Settings, Youtube, Maps and the App Store to allow landscape rotation — something I personally love about this mod. If you love that the iPad allows landscape orientation and wish your iPhone could do the same, this is exactly what you’ve been looking for.

SBRotator is available for both iOS 3.x devices as well as iOS 4.x — give it a try and tell us how you like it!

iWork for iPhone – @reneritchie

They dropped it in a press release. We’ve been waiting over a year, since Apple’s iWork Suite — Pages, Numbers, and Keynote — was redesigned for iOS with the original iPad, for it to become a universal app that also works on iPhone. And Apple dropped it in a press release. That speaks to a couple interesting things. First, Apple won’t have time for anything as “small” as iWork for iPhone during the WWDC keynote on Monday. Second, Apple will have their productivity suite ready and waiting on Mac, iPad, and iPhone come the WWDC keynote on Monday.

Taken right now, iWork for iPhone are interesting apps. They’re beautifully designed, of course. They’re easy to use, for touch screen productivity tools. But it’s still a complete pain to move documents back and forth between iPhone, iPad, and Mac. That’s a problem because as good as iWork for iPhone makes small touch screen, I’ll almost never use it to create full documents. I will use it — sometimes urgently — to fix mistakes I made in docs created on my Mac. For that, great apps need a great way to round trip.

So I’m picking iWork for iPhone this week, because they’re good apps that just need a great interconnecting service — an iCloud — to make them great.

Remote – @iMuggle

We have 2 AppleTVs in the house; one in the living room and one in the bedroom. I am notorious for losing those stupid little silver remotes. But you can bet I never lose my iPhone. Ever.

The Remote app is great for controlling the AppleTV and I use it pretty much all the time (probably more than any other app on my iPhone or iPad). Typing search terms with the silver remote they come with is daunting. From my iPhone, I can type fast and get to content even faster.

It’s free and a must have for anyone who owns an AppleTV. Do you use your AppleTV remote or the Remote app? Let us know!

Grocery IQ – jdipane (Reader’s Choice)

For me, remembering to grab everything that we need at the grocery store is a struggle, and I hate to be caught with an old fashion grocery list, partially because my fiancée has all Hello Kitty paper in the house.

Grocery IQ is a great list application that allows users to create and share various lists so that they don’t leave without buying everything that they need. Once an item is added to the list, users can check mark it which adds it to your “cart”. At the end of your trip, you simply checkout from the trip and the items you marked will be removed from your list. Grocery IQ also has coupons.com integration so you can view additional coupons and save some extra money while on the go – which everyone loves to do! With all the features that are found in this application, and the ease of use, it is a must download.

Dear Android and BlackBerry users, what would iOS 5 need to win you over?

Dear Android and BlackBerry users, what would iOS 5 need to win you over?

Apple will be announcing iOS 5 on Monday and if the rumors are to be believed it will do pretty much everything from notifications to make you a tasty vanilla latte (okay, not really.) But it does beg the question — if you’re an Android or BlackBerry user, or a Windows Phone, webOS, or fan of any other platform, what would Apple have to do to win you over to iPhone and iPad?

Rene’s posted his want list. What’s yours? What would you need to see from Steve Jobs and Apple to make you switch (or switch back?)

Steve Jobs talks about remote computing at WWDC 1997 [Blast from the past]

Steve Jobs talks about remote computing at WWDC 1997 [Blast from the past]

Almost 15 years ago, in a rare WWDC 1997 Q&A session, Steve Jobs talks about thin clients, the dangers of being too proprietary, the need for keyboards on mobile, not dating Larry Ellison, if Apple could ever compete with Microsoft and Intel, and having his home directory everywhere.

I have computers at Apple, at Pixar, at NeXT and at home. I walk over to any of them and log in as myself. It goes over the network, finds my home directory on the server and I've got my stuff, where ever I am. And none of that is on a local disc. The server…is my local disc."

Video after the break. Interesting in light of what we might see on Monday, no?

Automatic OTA app updates coming with iOS 5?

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 05:50 AM PDT

Could automatic, over the air (OTA) app updates be coming with iOS 5? MacRumors has uncovered the following line of text had been added to the My App Updates Screen, and has now been removed by Apple.

Or if your device has Automatic Download enabled for apps, your updates will download to your device without having to sync.

Apple has been rumored to include OTA app updates for iOS devices before. Since this setting is not part of any previous iOS build and has not been seen within iTunes previously, it could be a sign of things to come in iOS 5.

The process should allow you to set apps to automatically update when an update is present; without the need to open up the on device App Store and manually click either update all or selected apps. It also may be for more than just apps, we will have to wait until Monday to find out all the details.

We know some of you update your apps a lot more frequently than others. Would you like all your app updates done seamlessly and automatically?

Fling mini brings analogue joystick love to the iPhone and iPod touch

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 05:44 AM PDT

Ten One Design has announced a version of its popular iPad Fling joystick for the iPhone and iPod touch. The new product will come in a pack of two and will be called the Fling mini.

iPhone gaming is all about precision maneuvering, and Fling mini gives you this crucial advantage. As you control a game with Fling mini, it pushes gently back towards the center position.  This haptic feedback guides and stabilizes your gameplay, making every action more accurate.
The Fling for iPad has been a very successful product and is now stocked in Apple Stores in the United States. Now that an iPhone and iPod touch version has been announced, we hope that more game developers start to include full support for it.

The Fling mini is available to pre-order at a cost of $24.95. This includes two Fling minis to enable maximum game compatibility.

Are any of our readers planning on picking one of these up? Let us know in the comments!

Apple hires MobileNotifier developer Peter Hajas

Posted: 04 Jun 2011 05:43 AM PDT

It looks like Apple has recently hired Peter Hajas, lead developer behind the popular iOS jailbreak tweak MobileNotifier, as an “iOS Apps & Frameworks” employee.

Hajas announced his departure from development on MobileNotifier in a blog post ending with a reference to Steve Jobs’ closing remarks at his 2005 Stanford commencement speech saying “stay hungry and stay foolish”. This tipped off iPhone Download Blog who speculated he may be heading to Apple, and sure enough he’s been confirmed as an intern at their Cupertino headquarters.

It’s highly unlikely we’ll be seeing any of his work at WWDC 2011 next week, where Apple is set to unveil iOS 5, which is rumored to come with a completely revamped notification system.

We’re guessing any changes to notifications would come from Rich Dellinger, who left Palm and returned to Apple about a year ago. Many know Dellinger as the mastermind behind the slick and unobtrusive WebOS notification system, which has been hailed by many in the smartphone community as the one of the best notifications UI on any current platform.

However, we’re looking forward to seeing what Hajas can do for iOS and congratulate him on getting the job! Now, could this mean Apple is taking a better look at Jailbreak developers these days? Are there any others you think Apple might try to entice over to #TeamPure HQ?

Daily Tip: How to customize push notifications for Twitter

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:04 PM PDT

Use a Twitter app on your iPhone and wondering how to customize a balance between getting far too many push notifications, or none at all? Between your main timeline, @ replies/mentions, direct messages (DMs), list notifications, and trending topics – it can be a little overwhelming. There’s been talk of Twitter being integrated into iOS 5, but until then, you’ve got a few options. We’ll show them to you after the break!

We’ve already shown you how to turn notifications on or off in the Settings app, but what if you want something a little more granular? Several iPhone Twitter apps allow you to customize what notifications you get. Since there are far too many to explain every single one, we’ll take a look at Twitter for iPhone, the official app and most popular, and Boxcar, which works in conjunction with many of the available iPhone Twitter applications.

Twitter for iPhone

The official Twitter for iPhone app is an extremely easy app to use. It also has wicked fast push notifications. But if you’re receiving far too many (or none at all), there are a few settings to play with that allow you to customize what you get notified about.

  1. Launch Twitter for iPhone and from your main timeline, tap Accounts in the upper left hand corner.
  2. You’ll see a list of all your Twitter accounts, in the bottom left corner, tap Settings.
  3. Then tap Notifications under the account you’d like to adjust notifications for.
  4. You can now choose to receive push notifications for direct messages and mentions. For mentions, you can choose to receive them from only people you follow, or from anyone. I typically choose from anyone. (That’s how you find cool new followers!)
  5. You’re done! But as a side note, also make sure you have Twitter push enabled under Settings, Notifications in your iPhone’s main settings as well.

Boxcar

While Twitter for iPhone has a great push notification system that’s extremely reliable, it’s still somewhat lacking when it comes to options. Enter apps like Boxcar. I use this in conjunction with Twitter for iPhone, which only allows me to receive notifications for mentions and direct messages. Boxcar supports the following notification types when it comes to Twitter:

  • Timeline
  • Mentions
  • Retweets
  • Direct messsages
  • Favorites (when someone favorites a tweet of yours)
  • New followers (when you gain a new follower)
  • Added to list (when someone adds you to a list they created)

As you can see, Boxcar has a plethora of options. I personally use Boxcar to notify me when someone new starts following me, when a tweet gets marked as a favorite, or whenever I get added to a list. I let Twitter for iPhone take care of the rest. But if you choose, you can let Boxcar take care of everything. You can even use Boxcar to go into stalker mode and follow someone specific on Twitter. It will alert you every time they tweet if you want it to. Not to mention Boxcar has custom tones for those of you tired of the default tri-tone notification.

These are just the ways I choose to customize my Twitter notifications but there are tons of options out there. Since a lot of Twitter apps don’t have native push, Boxcar is a great app to compliment them. How do you customize yours and what’s your current favorite Twitter client? Let us know in the comments!

Is this the iCloud login screen? [Updated]

Is this the iCloud login screen?

With WWDC 2011 only days away, the leaks coming faster and more furiously, and one of the big ones might just be shown in that image up top — purportedly the iCloud login screen, by way of chpwn on Twitter.

Question is, will it replace MobileMe as Apple new internet services portal, or will it be a second point of entry?

UPDATE: And… it’s a fake.
