Tim Cook says iPad will eventually outsell PCs Posted: 02 Jun 2011 03:16 PM PDT According to Goldman Sachs analyst Bill Shope, Apple COO Tim Cook suggested during a meeting that the tablet market — which is currently dominated by the iPad — could eclipse the PC market over the next several years.
Analysts say a lot of things, and Cook’s words do seem a little far-fetched, but given Apple’s growth in the tablet market (which they essentially created) it’s not completely unheard of. Shope calculates Apple could sell 8.1 million iPads for the June quarter, which would represent a 72% increase year-over-year. So how long before the iPad starts putting the stomp on PC sales? Moscone banner shows off iCloud icon in advance of WWDC 2011 Posted: 02 Jun 2011 12:31 PM PDT Look through the glass and what do we see, the iCloud logo on a banner at WWDC! Yes, it does seem like someone traced the MobileMe icon to make the iCloud icon but that’s also a nice little bit of continuity. We still don’t know what exactly it will be — online music almost certainly, maybe movies, probably the MobileMe email, calendar, and contacts, and hopefully a much better version of photo handling. Will it be restricted to iTunes-only content or will it allow all your media, like Amazon and Google do? Will it be free, paid, or a mix of both? Streaming only, downloads, or a hybrid? So. Many. Questions. We’ll get our answers when Steve Jobs takes the stage on Monday! Until then, let us know what you think! Posted: 02 Jun 2011 11:38 AM PDT Looks like Apple is having some trouble with the iTunes and App Stores today, as tons of you are telling us you’re getting that nasty little “could not complete request” error message above. Whether or not it has anything to do with the the ginormous new Data Center, or the coming iCloud, we don’t know and can’t tell you, but we’re keeping an eye on things and will update as we get more info. In the meantime, let us know if you’re having the problem and, more importantly, when you get your access back! iTunes/App Store down? is a story by TiPb. New Apple Time Capsules to cache iOS software updates? Posted: 02 Jun 2011 11:33 AM PDT 9to5Mac is hearing that new Time Capsules — the Airport Extreme and hard drive in one — are on the way that might just be smart enough to download and cache iOS (and Mac) software updates for you, so they’re waiting when you’re ready.
And perhaps vice versa, uploading Time Machine backups to the iCloud servers Apple will be announcing at WWDC 2011 this Monday. Of course, not everyone may be fond of downloads happening in the background and potentially slowing connection speeds in the foreground while you’re trying to stream video, play online games, or otherwise need your pipes at their fastest potential. Either way, it looks like Apple has lots in store for us, and soon. New Apple Time Capsules to cache iOS software updates? is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Posted: 02 Jun 2011 11:20 AM PDT Today is Dieter Bohn’s last day with TiPb and the Smartphone Experts Network. Up until today, our editor-in-chief, Dieter founded TiPb — then PhoneDifferent — for SPE, recruited yours truly and most of the other staff at our sibling sites, and taught us how to run sites, communities, and generally be better bloggers than any of us could have imagined. Dieter’s going to take a short, and much deserved vacation, but then promises to be back with new endeavors. On behalf of Georgia, Jeremy, Leanna, Ally, Chris, Andrew, and everyone here at TiPb, we wish him well! Our good buddy Kevin Michaluk will be stepping in to help fill his big, blond shoes, and Derek Kessler is taking the reigns over at PreCentral. Phil at Android Central and Dan at WPCentral… well, you’re still stuck with us. We’re going to miss Dieter terribly, but we’re also incredibly excited at what’s coming next for SPE. It’s a new start for everyone, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Poll: iPhone, iPad, or PC for browsing the web? Posted: 02 Jun 2011 08:00 AM PDT What’s your absolute favorite device for browsing the web — iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or your Mac or Windows PC? I’m a little torn myself. The iPhone is great when I’m out and about and have no other options, but it’s small and doesn’t support Flash, and it’s not a fast experience. iPad is big and beautiful and I love it for reading and relaxing but it also doesn’t support Flash and I can’t type on it as fast as I need to for things like blogging here on TiPb. My 11-inch MacBook Air is portable but not really mobile, so I don’t have it always when I need it, but when I do it can handle every kind of web page imaginable and has a keyboard so I can easily whip up posts like this. (We have an iMac in the house, but I almost never use it.) If you had to pick one — if you were stranded on Internet Survivor Island and could have only a single device with you for browsing the web — what would it be, iPhone, iPad, or PC? Vote up in the poll and tell me why in the comments! I’ll reveal my answer on the next podcast! Poll: iPhone, iPad, or PC for browsing the web? is a story by TiPb. Orange UK launches iPhone 4 and iPad 2 Connected plan, including the two devices Posted: 02 Jun 2011 07:41 AM PDT Orange UK has launched a unique connected plan which includes an iPhone 4 and iPad 2. This is aimed squarely at customers that want to get both an iPhone 4 and iPad 2 on contract but only receive one monthly bill. Orange is offering any combination of iPhone 4 or iPad 2 on a single plan at a cost of £65.00 a month ($106). This includes 600 minutes of talk time, unlimited texts, unlimited BT Openzone WiFi access and a 2GB shared data allowance across both devices. The contract duration is two years. A one off cost, in addition to the monthly plan is payable for the two devices. You can tailor the package to suit; if you want an iPhone 4 16GB or 32GB matched with an iPad 2 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. The only difference in cost is the one off payment. The cheapest combination of an iPhone 4 16GB and iPad 2 16 GB coming in at £99 ($162) and the maximum combination of a 32GB iPhone 4 and 64GB iPad 2 coming in at £299 ($488). All iPad 2 models are 3G and WiFi. The offer is currently available to existing Orange customers. If you're not an Orange customer, you can still get a similar deal; although the one off payment price increases by an additional £50 ($82) Rogers in Canada has been offering something similar for a while; you pay an additional $30 and can share your 6GB of data between iPhone and iPad. However, it costs only a few dollars more to get an extra 5GB for iPad all on its own, so clearly this is still an area for experimentation. Would you consider taking up an offer like this? Would you want AT&T or Verizon, or your local carrier to offer it? [Orange]
