Win a Tablet of your choice from TouchType!

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 12:26 PM PDT

Win a Tablet of your Choice

To celebrate one million downloads of their SwiftKey keyboard app, TouchType is giving away a tablet each to THREE lucky winners! Which tablets? Whichever the winner chooses so long as they’re available for purchase for up to $800 where he or she lives. iPad 2, PlayBook, Xoom, Galaxy Tab are all on the table.

How do you enter? TouchType has put together a small survey which shouldn’t take more than five or ten minutes to complete. That’s it – well, that and a quick perusal of the official entry rules just to make sure you’re eligible (sorry minors and SPE employees). The contest is open to readers of Android Central, CrackBerry.com, TiPb, and WPCentral and ends at midnight Pacific on April 14th.

Not familiar with TouchType? You may have also seen that TouchType made a splash at this year’s CTIA with their tablet keyboard for Honeycomb – that’s coming soon, but SwiftKey is available now for Android devices.

So get cracking on the survey, folks – these tablets aren’t going to give themselves away.

Will you switch from iTunes to Amazon?

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 09:46 AM PDT

Now that Amazon has Cloud Drive and Cloud Player up and running alongside their music and movie service, anyone thinking about switching over from iTunes? Despite constant rumors Apple hasn’t yet announced their own digital locker or cloud streaming service, perhaps because they’re still trying to negotiate licenses with the record labels. Amazon did it without licenses (which kind of impressed us!). They also often have lower prices than iTunes, though iTunes still has the edge on ease of use.

So what do you say, have you switched from iTunes to Amazon? Are you considering it? And if so, what does Apple have to do to hold on to you?

Daily Tip: How to play music from Amazon’s Cloud Player on your iPhone

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 09:34 AM PDT

When Amazon announced their Cloud Drive and Cloud Player music services earlier this week they didn’t mention whether or not it would work on the iPhone, or any other iOS device for that matter. While there’s no app (yet?) and the full site doesn’t seem to want to work on Mobile Safari, single song playback works just fine on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch via Apple’s built-in Quicktime X Player. Just hit the jump to find out how it’s done!

To get started, first visit www.amazon.com/clouddrive and log in to access your free 5GB of storage. From there you can upload music files in MP3 or AAC format for playback on virtually any device with a web browser.

I’ve gone ahead and uploaded a few of my favorite tunes to test playback on my iPhone 4. Just follow these simple steps to get the service running on your own iDevice:

  1. Open Mobile Safari and navigate to Amazon’s Cloud Drive website here, then select the Music folder on the left navigation menu.
  2. Choose the song you’d like to play by selecting the checkbox next to the track name.
  3. Tap ‘Download’ above the track selection list.
  4. Put in your earbuds and enjoy the streaming music!

As I mentioned before, Safari won’t actually download and store the MP3 to your iPhone, but will instead launch the built-in Quicktime player for streaming playback. The drawback here is that you can only play one song at a time and must go through the steps for each track you’d like to hear. Additionally, Amazon doesn’t have Cloud Drive set up for the iPhone specifically, so navigating the service directly from your iPhone isn’t an enjoyable experience to say the least.

But, as demonstrated, playback works perfectly on any iOS device. Let us know if you plan on using Amazon’s new service or if you’d rather hold out for a more elegant option from Apple, and as always post any issues you run into in the comments below!

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. Time Warner Cable pulls channels from TWCable TV app for iPad

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 05:41 AM PDT

Time Warner Cable has had to remove channels from its iPad application, TWCable TV with immediate effect. We already heard that this may be happening but Time Warner has now confirmed this with a company statement. The networks that seem to have taken umbrage with Time Warner are Discovery Communications, Fox Cable and Viacom. This means the next time you fire up your TWCable TV application on your iPad, you will be missing Animal Planet, Discovery, TLC, FX, National Geographic, BET, CMT, Comedy, MTV, Nickelodeon, Spike and VH1.

Unfortunately, the owners of those channels don’t yet share our vision for making it easy for consumers to view the content they’ve already paid for on different screens within the home. We would rather use our technical resources to distribute the channels of programmers who agree that their content should be seen on any screen inside your home, while we pursue legal solutions that would let us continue deploying this Application.

Just as Amazon is facing resistance in letting customers stream their own music, this once again shows the wide gap between new technology and old media. Time Warner is clearly very unhappy about the situation and have set up a dedicated site to provide up to date information on any future developments.

[Thanks Anthony for the tip!]

Momentum

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:07 PM PDT

In January 2007 Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone. Summer 2007 he announced its release date and “sweet” web apps to go with it. In Fall 2007 he introduced the iPod touch and iTunes Store app. Spring 2008 brought iOS 2 (then iPhone OS 2.0) and the App Store. Summer 2008 saw iPhone 3G and MobileMe. Fall 2008 was iPod touch 2. Spring 2009 was iOS 3. Summer 2009 was iPhone 3GS. Fall 2009 was iPod touch 3. January 2010, iPad. Spring 2010, iOS 4. Summer 2010, iPhone 4. Fall 2010, iPod touch 4 and Apple TV 2. Spring 2011, iPad and…

Nothing. Maybe.

Momentum is a fickle thing. You can gain and lose it in the blink of an eye. For four years iOS software and hardware have been setting the pace for mobile. From a single app-less iPhone in 2007, iOS has grown to encompass iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and Apple TV and a host of supporting software and services. The original iPhone was a true revolution, obsoleting then market-leaders Palm, Microsoft, RIM, and Symbian. They never saw it coming, denied it was happening, and then failed for years to frame anything close to a coherent response. And while they were spinning, Apple hit them again with the App Store. And again with the iPad.

Windows Phone has rebooted but is still in early days and has struggled to provide timely updates. Even with HP’s deep pockets and huge reach Palm has been slow to get new devices out the door. BlackBerry is counting on a tablet to bridge the gap between their phones of the past and superphones of the future. And Nokia is in the middle of a shotgun wedding with Microsoft. With the Verizon iPhone in the US and white iPhone 4 slated for spring, Apple could easily skate another 3 months in that competitive landscape.

But not in a competitive landscape that includes Android.

Originally shown off as a BlackBerry or Windows Mobile Standard competitor, Android rapidly changed focus post-iPhone and came straight at Apple. While the G1 was clearly unfinished they began to hit their stride with Droid. Half way through iPhone 3GS’ product cycle, Nexus One actually took the lead in some areas. An inspirational device, it was way ahead of previous Android phones and showed where the platform was going for the next year. iPhone 4 was Apple’s answer.

According to rumors, however, Apple may not preview iOS 5 this spring and may not introduce an iPhone 5 this summer. If these rumors turn out to be true, Apple will be facing 15+ months without a new phone or major OS update, and 3+ months of relative stillness in the incredibly fast moving market.

Meanwhile, Google’s “openy” Android will just keep coming. While Nexus S turned out to be more summation of the past year than indicator of the next, spring has sprung seemingly a dozen more with dual core, LTE, and 3D. Whether any of these new Android features are particularly compelling or not, they’re still new features, new phones. They’re still news.

Come June AT&T and other carrier contracts will be up and for the first time in 4 years there won’t be a new iPhone to drive renewal. For the first time people who just want a new iPhone, the way they’ve been accustomed to getting each year’s new fashion, won’t have one waiting for them. Existing owners accustomed to a software refresh, a breath of fresh air into their older devices, won’t be getting a major new version of iOS. Developers won’t have had several months with new APIs and won’t have a slew of new apps ready to take advantage of them.

Whether or not finishing Mac OS X Lion has caused a delay in iOS 5 the way iOS has caused delays for Mac OS X in the past, whether or not a delay in IOS 5 has caused a delay in iPhone 5, whether or not there are issues with components or engineering, or absolutely nothing but Apple’s will to schedule it so, for the first time since 2007 we’re facing… a break in Apple’s pace.

Momentum is a fickle thing. Come June there may be no lineups, no race to iTunes’ update button.

What then?

Daily Tips: How to connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 09:01 PM PDT

New to iPhone and curious how to connect to a Wi-Fi network? Wi-Fi is faster than 3G and if you’re on a tiered plan it’s a great way to avoid wasting your precious data. This may seem simple for those of us who have had our iPhones for a while but if you haven’t done it before, stay with us after the break to find out how to use Wi-Fi!

Here’s how to connect to a Wi-Fi network on your iPhone or iPod touch. (It’s also similar on iPad though the Settings app looks a little different.)

  1. Launch Settings and make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on.
  2. Check the available networks that appear under: Choose a Network.
  3. Tap network you would like to join.
  4. Enter the network password. If it’s especially complicated, email it to your iPhone and cut and paste it in.

Bonus tip: If you’re at Starbucks, the airport, or somewhere else that has free or paid Wi-Fi, a page may slide up asking you for an account login or to agree to their terms of service. Just fill this in the same way you’d log in via the web on a laptop. If you’re not sure what the Wi-Fi password is, ask an employee or the administrator.

I hope this has helped out those new to smartphones!
