Posted: 25 Feb 2011 04:52 PM PST

Hard drive coming dangerously close to being overrun with data and wondering how to move your iTunes library to another location? If you have a ton of stuff on your computer and your iTunes library isn’t helping the situation out have no fear we are here to help! Find out how, after the break!

[Apple iTunes News]

  1. Open up the iTunes Preferences and select the Advanced tab
  2. Ensure “Keep iTunes media folder organized” is checked
  3. Now on the right of the text box at the top (iTunes Media folder location) you will see a button that says Change… go ahead and click on it
  4. Select the location you want to store your iTunes library
  5. Go to File then Library and finally choose Organize Library…
  6. Make sure you select to consolidate files and click ok
  7. Once the transfer is complete you can delete the files from their original location and have some precious storage space back on your computer

It’s that simple to get a good portion of your hard drive back from iTunes. Just be aware that if you do decide to do this and you use an external hard drive you’ll have to make sure it’s plugged in and available any time you want to play media or sync your iPhone or iPad!

Consumer Reports doesn’t recommend the Verizon iPhone 4 either

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 04:44 PM PST

duct tape on an iPhone 4 to prevent antenna problems

Consumer Reports appears to still be ranting about the reception issues on the iPhone 4, this time they’re targeting the Verizon iPhone 4 and excluding it from their list of recommended smartphones.

For that reason, we are not including the Verizon iPhone 4 in our list of recommended smart phones, despite its high ranking in our Ratings. Although Apple no longer offers a free case to buyers of the iPhone 4, as it did for a time after the problem was first discovered on the AT&T version, the company has said in the past that it will consider requests for a free case from customers who buy the phone and subsequently experience reception problems.

Consumer Reports helped set off Antennagate when the AT&T iPhone 4 was originally released. After their initial review of the iPhone 4, Consumer Reports claimed they couldn’t recommend the iPhone 4 due to the antenna issues.

I don’t know about any of you but the reception problems didn’t ever affect me personally. Maybe because I always use cases or bumpers. (Who doesn’t put a case on a phone as expensive as the iPhone?) I guess I’m not quite sure why Consumer Reports is still ranting about the issues. Millions of iPhones later, people still want them. All phones have signal attenuation issues when held, not just the iPhone. Is it just me or is Consumer Reports making mountains out of mole hills? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Verizon CEO: iPhone best launch in history, Apple going to be part of LTE

Verizon CEO: iPhone best launch in history, Apple going to be part of LTE

Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Verizon Chief Executive Daniel Mead addressed reports of slower than expected Verizon iPhone sales by re-iterating that the launch was the most successful in their history. While he wouldn’t give specific figures prior to their next earnings releases, he said they carefully planned online sales and a staggered rollout to spread out purchasing.

Mr. Mead said more than 60% of iPhone sales occurred online. That heavy activity online contributed to short lines on launch day, which were noted by many news outlets. “If we had not done online, you would have seen a much different flow in the pictures,” he said. In a few days, the company will double the number of stores that sell the iPhone, going from 4,000 to 8,000.

They also expect Apple to eventually offer an iPhone and iPad that work on their 4G LTE network:

“You’ll see more coming from Apple on LTE,” he said. “They understand the value proposition of LTE and I feel very confident that they are going to be a part of it.”

AT&T iPhone comes out the same time of year, every year, when contracts are ready for renewal and/or AT&T offers early renewal. The was no cycle for the Verizon iPhone — unless by pure chance your contract was up or you don’t care about subsidies many people are probably waiting until their next upgrade — maybe even waiting for iPhone 5.

Perhaps Verizon staggering the availability, doing pre-orders and opening online orders early lowered lineups, but everything about the launch disfavored lines.

We’ll know for sure when the numbers come out, but what’s your hunch?

Apple patents “Places” as a social networking service for iOS

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 01:23 PM PST

While Apple and social networking didn’t get off to a good start with Ping!, it appears Apple may be willing to try again with a new patent pointing to a social networking feature they are titling “Places”. (Does this sound familiar to anyone else?)

The patent shows that Places will be a social networking type service that will use the assistance of GPS to locate users on iOS devices. Whether or not it will integrate with Ping! is yet to be seen. The service is pretty much the same thing most mobile users already know how to use through apps like Gowalla and Foursquare. Ping! didn’t seem to do as well as Apple would have liked so this may be a move to try and tie in the two services.

My big issue with Apple creating services like this is that it only encompasses the Apple ecosystem. What about my friends that are on other platforms such as Android? I can already interact with them through services like Gowalla and Foursquare, which are cross-platform. Apple would have to give me a really good reason to use their service to get me to abandon apps I’m already familiar with. Perhaps they’ll integrate access to those services through their own. I’m still surprised they’re using the title “Places” since Facebook already uses that title for their check-in service, and Apple already uses it for its facial recognition in iPhoto and Aperture.

What do you guys think? Would you use it or stick with what you already have?

BBC holding an event at the same time as the iPad 2 launch, are they linked?

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 01:20 PM PST

Apple holding iPad 2 event on March 2

The BBC (British Broadcasting Company) is holding an unspecified press event on Wednesday March 2nd at 6pm GMT, which coincides exactly to the Apple iPad 2 launch event.

Now this could be pure coincidence, but throw into the mix that the BBC event will be hosted by none other than self confessed Apple fan Stephen Fry and this sets alarm bells ringing. Mr Fry was one of the first people to get their hands on the original iPad last year so it all starts to make sense, well a little anyway!

Another point to note, prior to the launch of the BBC's iPlayer app for iPad earlier this month, an engineer working on the project for the BBC tweeted that the BBC app "Will take advantage of the higher-res screen that the iPad 2 has got." "HD content will look good."

Now we have since heard rumor after rumor that the iPad 2 will have the same display as the current version, but this may throw a spanner into the works. Will there be a live link between the two events? Are they connected? Is this just a coincidence? On Wednesday we will find out for sure!

FIFA 11 updated, now includes multiplayer!

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 06:18 AM PST

FIFA 11 has received a major update and now offers multiplayer gaming over Bluetooth and WiFi. FIFA 11 is a highly successful football (soccer) console game, spanning many years and the release for iOS devices was a fantastic port but always lacked multiplayer.

This latest update, as well as offering a few bug fixes, addresses this missing feature and you can now challenge your friends to games or play with them in a co-op format. The games can only be played when you are in the same vicinity as your friends, as the multi-player is Bluetooth based or on the same local WiFi connection. No facility for over the internet games at this stage, which is a little disappointing!

The game is available right now from the App Store and is available for iPhone and iPod Touch. A separate HD version is available for the iPad; this has not received the multi-player update yet.

No PCI Express architecture means no Thunderbolt for iPhone, iPad?

No PCI Express architecture means no Thunderbolt for iPhone, iPad?

Intel’s new 10Gbps Thunderbolt I/O system, used by Apple in their MacBook Pro update yesterday, uses PCI Express and Mini DisplayPort technologies… neither of which it turns out are ideal candidates for iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. Macworld elaborates:

Thunderbolt relies on PCI Express, the architecture that underpins Macs and most PCs. But iOS devices don't use a PCI Express architecture, which would presumably make it difficult to simply stick a Thunderbolt port on an iPhone. Plus the dock-connector port on iOS devices provides quite a bit of additional functionality—it's got 30 connection pins for a reason, after all. Finally, it's not clear what benefits Thunderbolt would provide that the dock-connector port is missing. We suspect it's far more likely that Apple will eventually sell an optional Thunderbolt-to-dock-connector cable for charging and syncing.

The benefit would be what we discussed on iPhone Live on Wednesday — really fast transfer of files like when you need to update your software, restore your backups and re-sync lots of big movies or apps like games and navigation with on-board maps. Is that a common enough situation where Thunderbolt would make sense for future iOS devices? Or is USB fast enough for the big stuff and everything else is heading wireless anyway?

iPad 2 to go carbon fiber. Maybe. (See footnote.)

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 05:19 AM PST

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber has added some carefully hedged speculation about the iPad 2 going carbon fiber to the mix:

I could publish things I'm only half-sure about, like the iPad 2 switching from aluminum to a lightweight high-strength carbon fiber body, but I don't, because I'm only half-sure and I've only heard about it from second-hand sources who themselves are unsure about it. And even if I were to off-handedly mention such speculation, I'd do so in a footnote and take pains to emphasize the uncertain nature of the information and the second-hand status of the sources thereof.

He also weighed in on some of the back and forth iPad 2 rumors, saying the hi-res display was never on the table and wagering SD wasn’t either, so they couldn’t have been “cut”.

Given that the glass makes up so much of the weight and the batteries won’t be getting lighter any time soon, would switching to carbon fiber really make enough of a difference that Apple would consider it? Or is just the ability to say “the lightest iPad ever” incentive enough?
