Bugs: AT&T iPhone can send emoji to Verizon iPhone, but not the other way around Posted: 20 Feb 2011 07:51 AM PST A rather interesting bug has been discovered: emoji sent over SMS between Verizon iPhone and AT&T iPhones is not recognized both ways – Verizon can receive from AT&T, but not vice versa. When a Verizon iPhone texts emoji to an AT&T iPhone, all that is received is a bunch of random characters. However, a Verizon iPhone will recognize emoji sent from an AT&T iPhone with no problem. This inability to interpret emoji is only an issue with the messages app, however. An AT&T iPhone can recognize emoji elsewhere, like email and twitter, just fine – even if the emoji was sent from a Verizon iPhone. Anyone else run into this problem? More iPad 2, iPad 3 rumors: Cameras, Retina Displays, and 6-inch screens Posted: 20 Feb 2011 07:37 AM PST As we get closer to spring, iPad 2 — and strangely iPad 3 — rumors just keep coming, including more on cameras and placement, future Retina Displays, and… wait for it!… a 6-inch form factor! First up, 9to5Mac got their hands on some purported iPad 2 screen savers and M.I.C Gadget some purported high-end iPad 2 cases which suggest the front-facing camera will be centered, like on iPod touch 4, and the rear camera will be roughly the same size as iPhone 4. (Though that doesn’t indicate resolution or senor quality.) The screen may also be taller but slightly narrower and the device in general a tad smaller (Georgia’s oft-requested bezel reduction?) It also indicates the tapered edges, flat back, and speaker grill we saw on the mock-up at CES might turn out to be real. Next, AppleInsider reports that, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple isn’t able to produce sufficient quantities of a 2048×1536 iPad Retina Display at low enough costs yet, re-affirming that will more likely be an iPad 3 feature. Kuo also said Apple is evaluating a mid-sized device between iPod touch at 3.5-inches and iPad at 9.7-inches. Rather than a smaller iPad, however, this could be a larger iPod touch that “stretches” the 960×640 Retina Display to lower density but larger physical size (much like large screen Android phones and early tablets did.) A 6-inch iPod touch would be easier for younger and older users to see and navigate and better for gaming and movies… …But I still don’t see Apple letting anything “stretched” out of the labs. Do you? [9to5Mac, M.I.C Gadget, AppleInsider] More iPad 2, iPad 3 rumors: Cameras, Retina Displays, and 6-inch screens is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
Posted: 20 Feb 2011 07:37 AM PST Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they're iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they're fair game. To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!
Alli’s pick: MediaflyDo you listen to or watch podcasts? Do you want a choice of storing them on your device (when you want), or streaming (if you want)? Do you want to be able to search from thousands of podcasts by name or genre? Do you want it all? Then you need Mediafly. Download the free Mediafly player, and set up a free account online. It is from your online account that you will choose what podcasts you want, determine which “channel” to put them, and how many episodes you want to keep. Mediafly will even allow you to keep only those special episodes that you want to listen to again and again. Once everything is set up online, you enter your credentials in the iPhone/iPad app, and choose what you want to always download, and what you prefer to stream. While it takes a while to set up, once it’s set, your podcast listening/watching habits will change forever. And Mediafly is becoming a force in the podcast world! They currently cover iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, Android, WebOS, Blackberry, WDTV, Roku, Popcorn Hour, Boxee, Sansa, Chumby, and too many others to list. The only thing missing is AppleTV (sniff!), but hopefully we’ll get that, too. [Free - iTunes link] Ally’s pick: GowallaI just recently started using social check-ins again. A few months back Gowalla got a pretty awesome update. It allows you to check into multiple services at once and adds a lot of really nice UI enhancements. The thing I like about Gowalla over Foursquare is that it isn’t really a competition. It’s more of building a personal passport. I love collecting new items when we are out of town and going back later to look at all the places we have been. It’s more personal and I love it. It’s like I have a virtual passport on my phone that I can use to collect stamps and pictures of all my adventures. If you haven’t checked out Gowalla, give it a try! [Free - iTunes Link] Andrew’s pick: ReadlinesReadlines is a handy app that makes it easy to keep up with your RSS feeds at a glance by syncing with your Google Reader subscriptions and displaying a clean and minimalist review of your unread feeds. The app shows you all the information you need including the title, source, date and more on a 10-second timer before showing you the next article title. It does so in a simple and beautiful way and also lets you choose from a number of great looking fonts. If you see a story you want to read, just tap it and you’ll be taken to the full story via Mobile Safari. I’ve been using this app over the past few days at work to keep up with my feeds on the side. I just put my iPhone in the charging dock and take a look whenever I have a free moment. If I see something interesting and I have a minute, I’ll pop into the article and continue reading. It’s a great way to keep up with the news while your working or doing other activities, so go check it out! [$0.99 - iTunes link] Chris O’s pick: EpisodesEpisodes is a great little app to keep track of your favorite TV shows. The app provides full episode lists for each of your chosen shows, including a reasonably detailed synopsis for each. It is a great way to keep track of the shows you want to watch and ensure you don’t miss them, especially if you are outside the US. I use it to find out when shows have aired, so I know that I can go and grab them from….my sources! The app also has recommendations which are based on the shows you have in your watch list, all in all, a nice little app. [$0.99 - iTunes-Link] George’s pick: AppBackUp [Jailbreak]I have joined Team Jailbreak purely because of this app. AppBackUp backs up your saved games and settings, for apps you've bought from the AppStore. AppBackUp can either backup all your apps, or individual apps, whether you want to just delete certain apps off the phone or backup all your settings and saved games before a restore. The app is simple and intuitive to use, and saves all your files into one location allowing you to copy it off the phone so you can have a backup off all those important saved game files. [Free via Cydia] Leanna’s pick: InstagramI know I am late to this party, but I have finally downloaded Instagram and I’m upset at myself for waiting this long. This is not only a fantastic little photo editing app, but a great social platform as well. Every photo has a 1:1 crop and there are many awesome filters to apply. With the tap of a button, you can share your photos to Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, Tumblr, and Posterous in addition to Instagram. Just like other social networks, you can follow other members and have their photos show up in your feed where you can “like” them and leave comments. There is also a “popular” tab where you can view photos that have recieved a lot of attention in the Instagram world. If you enjoy taking photographs, stop putting it off and download this great little app. Now! [Free - iTunes link] Rene’s pick: PSD ViewerApple has thus far not seen fit to add Photoshop PSD files to their iPhone QuickView/preview system and for graphic designers, that can be beyond inconvenient. PSD Viewer mitigates that somewhat but allowing you to see PSD files. It works by hooking into the iOS 4 send-files-to action, so Mail attachments, web links, and — in theory — files stored online in DropBox, iDisk, etc. (I say in theory because in practice DropBox sometimes wouldn’t detect PSD Viewer and so wouldn’t present the send-files-to action button, which was frustrating.) Still, the ability to quickly take a peek at comps, design ideas, etc. on iPhone is huge. Apple to adopt 10Gbps LightPeak soon? Posted: 19 Feb 2011 06:47 PM PST Intel’s new ultra-high speed, 10Gbps LightPeak connector might just be adopted by Apple soon, and under their own branded name, according to CNET’s sources. That’s more than 4x faster than USB 2.0’s 480Mbps, which is currently supported by iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Since MacBook refreshes are all the rumor-rage right now, that’s what’s expected to get the LightPeak (or whatever Apple ends up calling it) love first, maybe as soon as this week. But wouldn’t that be fantastic for iOS as well, especially for people who sync lots of big games, navigation apps, movies, and other media? If Apple transitions from the 30-pin Dock connector to an EU-favored micro-USB we gain nothing but more standardized same-speed cables with less pins. With LighPeak we get blazing fast connections. I won’t get my hopes up for iPad 2 or iPhone 5… but how about iPad 3 and iPhone 6? Anyone else want that future now? [CNET] Apple to adopt 10Gbps LightPeak soon? is a story by TiPb.
