TiPb Asks: Which jailbreak apps should go official on the iPhone?

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 12:06 PM PST

jailbreak_cydia_updates

Which current Jailbreak apps would you like to see go official on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad in iOS5? It’s amazing how many have done so already from Installer, which was the App Store before there was an App Store, all the way up to MyWi, which is now going to be duplicated by Personal Hotspot in iOS 4.2.6 for Verizon iPhone and iOS 4.3 for everyone else.

BiteSMS for instant text handling comes to mind, as do LockInfo for glance-able data, and even Winterboard for theming. Better notification handling, multitasking visualizers, folder enhancers, there’s so much to choose from! Ally already told us her 8 most-wanted Jailbreak concepts Apple should implement in iOS 5, but now we want to hear from you! (Or if you would prefer some stay independent on Cydia, tell us which and why as well!)

Sony launches music streaming service, says they won’t remove content from iTunes

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 10:09 AM PST

Sony has officially launched it’s own music streaming service called Music Unlimited, powered by Qriocity, and available now in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. Their aim is to challenge Apple’s iTunes dominance by providing a service that is available across a myriad of devices such as Playstation 3, Blu-Ray players, Bravia televisions and computers. They also plan on adding an app for Google’s Android operating system so they can get into the smartphone scene as well. The pricing will start at as low as $3.99 per month and they plan on rolling it out to more countries this year.

Interestingly enough they are said to also be supporting iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad sometime this year as well. The only problem for them in that regard could be the new 30% cut Apple would require based on their new App Store developer guidelines and subscription service.

We also told you last week that Sony was not happy with Apple and had plans of possibly pulling all of their content from iTunes all together. Well Sony Network Entertainment COO (also involved with Music Unlimited service), Shawn Layden says otherwise.

Sony Music as I understand it has no intention of withdrawing from iTunes, they’re one of our biggest partners in the digital domain. I think those words were either taken out of context or the person who spoke them was unclear on the circumstances.

So so you want Music Unlimited on your iOS device or is iTunes the better way for you to have access to music? Tell us your thoughts on Sony’s new service!

Twitter adds iTunes App Store integration

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 10:06 AM PST

app store twitter

Twitter have added iTunes App Store previews to their integrated services. Previously, Twitter had added Apple’s Ping service to their integrated services, to allow you to preview songs before opening iTunes. It seems that Twitter have now added App Store integration as well. When someone tweets an App Store link, you will get a similar preview pane, which will show you, what app the link goes to, the price, a description and screenshots

This will only work on the new twitter website, won’t work on the old website or on the official apps. Interestingly this new App Store integration only works with the iOS App Store and doesn’t show any previews for Mac App Store Links right now.

Anyone appreciating this new functionality? Does it make you want to use the new website more?

AT&T no longer happy with iPhone App Store

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 07:38 AM PST

Now that AT&T isn’t the exclusive US iPhone carrier anymore, CEO Randall Stephenson saw fit to express some frustration with the way Apple runs the iPhone App Store. Stephenson believes customers should be able to buy an app once and run it on any device they so choose, including iPhone, Android phones, Windows phones, etc.

“You purchase an app for one operating system, and if you want it on another device or platform, you have to buy it again,” Stephenson said in a keynote speech at the world’s largest mobile-phone trade show in Barcelona, Spain. “That’s not how our customers expect to experience this environment.”

And the way to do this of course is by building them as HTML5 apps and selling them through the AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile run Wholesale Applications Community (WAC). Now I don’t know about you but I always get suspicious when a big company talks about what’s better for customers (yes even Apple). Right now Apple and developers make all the money on apps but if carriers ran the store they would get a cut of the revenue, right?

I do think it would be nice to be able to take my apps with me if I ever change platforms but even the sweetest HTML5 apps are still very limited compared to native iPhone apps. There’s no Infinity Blade in HTML5 yet and even if there were trying to make one app work on multiple platforms often leads to a lowest common denominator approach. Is saving a few dollars with a truly universal app worth losing features that are unique to each platform or device?

What would you prefer, a carrier-run HTML5 app store or Apple’s current App Store?

iPad set to replace restaurant menus and reduce staff

Posted: 17 Feb 2011 06:39 AM PST

Stacked Restaurant chain is going to use the iPad to enable customers to order their food at the table, reducing the need and cost of waitress service. The new restaurant chain is set to open their first restaurant in Southern California in May, with two more to follow.

An iPad will sit on each table within a metal framed stand and provide customers with the choice of what goes in their burgers, pizzas and salads. They can select the type of buns, meat, toppings etc by clicking and dragging icons on the touchscreen. The resultant menu choice will be viewable on the iPad screen when complete. Diners can also pay for their food via the iPad.

Co-founder Paul Motenko said, "We’re not going to market it as an iPad restaurant.” When Stacked founders first considered a concept with guests creating their own meals and ordering them on tabletop devices, the iPad didn’t yet exist. iPads were the breakthrough."

Should anyone wish to walk away with the iPad on their table, an alarm system will sound as soon as it is taken outside; similar to the system used in stores today.

The iPad is being used in many different situations, we have recently seen them it in the New York Plaza, offering a concierge experience as well as in Grand Central Terminal being used as a cash register. Not sure if Apple envisaged such uses for the iPad but it is only going to become more widespread.

Have you seen the iPad being used in any other stores or restaurants? Let us know in the comments!

Daily Tip: How to setup Gmail as Exchange to push your e-mails [Beginner]

Posted: 16 Feb 2011 08:15 PM PST

Coming from another platform where you’re used to the Gmail app on Android or the instant push of BlackBerry mail and curious how to get that on your iPhone? Well good news — Google licensed Exchange ActiveSync from Microsoft and offers Google Sync for iPhone (and other devices). So if you set up your Gmail (or Google Account) as an Exchange account you get push email, calendars, and contacts. We’ll show you how after the break!

Setting up Gmail as Exchange/Google Sync is easy provided you ignore that giant Gmail button on the mail account screen and choose Exchange instead. Here are the steps:

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Tap Add Account.
  4. Tap Microsoft Exchange.
  5. For Email, enter your full Gmail or Google Account email address (i.e. name@gmail.com or name@mygoogleaccountdomain.com).
  6. Leave the Domain field blank. (Really.)
  7. Again, enter your Gmail or Google Account email address as the Username. (Yup, that’s twice.)
  8. Enter your Gmail/Google Account password for Password.
  9. Tap Next.
  10. When the Server field appears, enter m.google.com.
  11. Tap Next.
  12. Select what you want to sync (Mail, Calendar, and Contacts).

WARNING: Your iPhone will ask if you want to delete all existing data and replace it with Google data, or merge the two. What you choose depends on how you store your data. If everything is in the Google Cloud, choose replace. If you have a mix of data from, for example, Outlook as well, choose merge.

If you’ve got an questions or any Gmail tips of your own, let us know! And power users, especially if you’re coming from Android, check out our how to get a better Gmail experience tip!
