AT&T fires back at Verizon with simultaneous voice and data commercial Posted: 04 Feb 2011 02:47 PM PST The new Verizon iPhone commercial tore into AT&T’s network but AT&T loaded their own cannons with some simultaneous voice and data and just shot back with a commercial of their own. Called Answer the commercial highlights a man who gets a call from his wife double-checking on their anniversary plans — which he of course forgot to make. He promptly puts the call into the background and jumps onto the internet, something that couldn’t be done on Verizon (unless the man’s office had, you know, Wi-Fi…) Video after the break, let us know how compelling the counter commercial is in comments! [Thanks Kaled]

Greenpois0n RC5 Jailbreak for iPhone, iPad iOS 4.2.1 updated Posted: 04 Feb 2011 02:02 PM PST Greenpois0n RC5, the latest Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, has been updated to version 2, which should fix some of the issues users have been experiencing. Mainly the issue where your jailbreak will just sit at “Greenpois0n Initialized”. Hopefully this version will take care of that bug. I know a few people have been having issues even loading Greenpois0n.com. There are also several mirrors available, so keep checking the comments for the latest on those. Also, some users have been noting that their Cydia icon is completely missing or they can’t get Cydia to install. You can alternately use redsn0w RC8 to install Cydia. Basically use Greenpois0n to jailbreak untethered and then run redsn0w just to install Cydia. Let us know in the comments if the second version of Greenpois0n is working any better for you! If you need instructions on jailbreaking under iOS 4.2.1, check out our how to jailbreak via Greenpois0n walkthrough and if you need more help, our Jailbreak Forum. NFL teams may replace playbooks with iPads Posted: 04 Feb 2011 11:20 AM PST A few NFL teams, including the Dallas Cowboys, might soon be joining the 21st century by adopting of iPads to replace their paper playbooks and game-day printouts. This could help keep some teams from using over 5,000 pieces of paper per game! Not only would this help save some trees but think of the possibilities for the teams as well. No longer will they need to wait for a photo of a defense to be printed out — they can get those pictures wirelessly on their iPads with the ability to zoom in for details. Also maybe they could get video of a great play for the players to take a look at and see what worked for them. All of this would be live and in the moment with annimation and depth rather than printed on a piece of paper. One thing halting the process as of now is teams aren’t exactly sure how secure the iPad really is. Yes they know it can be remotely wiped so if it was lost all their plays wouldn’t be public knowledge but they want to know no one will be able to gain remote access to their intellectual property (their plays). Other tablets could take the iPad’s place with the NFL if teams decide they are overall safer to use than the iPad so hopefully they figure it out or maybe Apple can help reassure them of their safety. Would you like to see your favorite team sporting iPad’s on the sidelines or are you a traditional fan and think there isn’t a need for them on the sidelines? Next chance at Verizon iPhone: Thursday, Feb 9/10 launch day Posted: 04 Feb 2011 06:35 AM PST If you didn’t manage to snag a Verizon iPhone during the pre-orders — which have since sold-out and resulted in the most successful sales in Verizon history — your next chance is Thursday February 10 when the Verizon iPhone launch goes public. Unlike pre-orders, the Verizon iPhone will then be available to everyone and in addition to online, it will be available at Apple Retail, Verizon Wireless, and Best Buy stores. Once again we recommend shopping early:
Online you get a head start but may face server issues and will definitely have to wait for delivery, which could take a couple days. Line up and you get the full iPhone launch day experience and immediate access to your new iPhone, but may risk them selling out before you get yours. Which way are you leaning? Or are you one of the luck ones sitting outside waiting for FedEx already? Next chance at Verizon iPhone: Thursday, Feb 9/10 launch day is a story by TiPb. Verizon iPhone 4 most successful first day sales in Verizon history Posted: 04 Feb 2011 06:14 AM PST Verizon has just announced that the pre-orders for the Verizon iPhone — in just the 2 hours between 3am and 5am — resulted in the most successful first day sales in the company’s history.
This for a phone that’s already been on the market for 7 months. Again, anyone care to guess at the sales figures for this launch? I was guessing over a million. Now I’m guessing close to 2. Were you one of them? Verizon iPhone 4 most successful first day sales in Verizon history is a story by TiPb. This feed is sponsored by The iPhone Blog Store. |
How to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 iPhone, iPad untethered via greenpois0n [Mac users only] Posted: 04 Feb 2011 05:16 AM PST Greenpois0n RC5 now allows you to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 untethered on most devices including iPhone 4 and iPad. The best part? You won’t need any SHSH blobs saved. redsn0w beta required you to have 4.2b3 blobs saved (and it was pretty unstable). Hopefully greenpois0n is going to be a much smoother experience for you guys. Hit the jump for a walkthrough on how to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 with greenpois0n and for the answers to some commonly asked questions.
What devices will greenpois0n RC5 jailbreak?
You’ll need to be running iOS 4.2.1 in order for this version of greenpois0n to work (4.1.1 for AppleTV second generation users). Should I do a full stock restore first? In short, most likely. If you’re already stock and haven’t been jailbroken, you’re fine. Still back up your phone first in case anything goes wrong. If you are currently jailbroken on 4.1, yes. Do a full stock restore to 4.2.1 and restore as a new iPhone. After jailbreaking, I still don’t recommend restoring from a backup. Old jailbreak pieces can come with your backup and cause issues for you. Just my personal recommendation. If you are currently tethered on 4.2.1 via redsn0w, you should be able to just run greepois0n right over your current jailbreak to untether. Some of the devs are saying if you have issues installing Cydia via greenpois0n after running it, simply run redsn0w again and let it re-install Cydia. Basically, as long as you aren’t running a Monte version jailbreak on 4.2.1, you should be able to run greenpois0n to untether. Will this jailbreak iOS 4.3 beta? No. You’ll have to wait a bit longer on a tested jailbreak for 4.3. Jailbreaking iOS 4.2.1 via Greenpois0n
Note: Some users in the comments have been reporting sometimes the initializing error is a result of not holding the home button long enough when entering DFU mode. Even when the text is not greyed out anymore, continue holding the home button if you’re getting the Initializing error even after trying Greenpois0n RC5 version 2. If you guys have already used this version of greenpois0n, let us know how it’s going in the comments! Have other questions? Check our our Jailbreak Starters Guide and jailbreak forums! Want to read The Daily but don’t have an iPad? Try the web index! Posted: 04 Feb 2011 05:16 AM PST Programmer Andy Baio has put together a nice online index of each issue of The The Daily with links to every article for anyone who wants access to their content without using an iPad (or paying a subscription). The Daily, a new digital newspaper from News Corp. which launched yesterday morning alongside Apple’s new subscription service, is currently limited to iPad owners but allows readers to share articles on services like Twitter and Facebook. The Daily then publishes these shared articles online but without any indexing service. The Daily: Indexed simply pulls the existing content and indexes it all for you to view in a browser, which is also nice for users who want access to previous issues not available on the iPad app. News Corp. has already pumped over $30 million into the project and they’re hoping to eventually make a profit on a subscription model of $.99/week. The digital newspaper is said to cost upwards of $500,000 per week, so with The Daily: Indexed now hitting the scene this will surely throw a spoke into News Corps. hopes and dreams of bringing home the bacon with their new service. So how long do you think News Corp. will let this index stay online? Sound off in the comments below! [The Daily: Indexed via Daring Fireball] Want to read The Daily but don’t have an iPad? Future Apple iPads to have a built-in kickstand? [Patent Watch] Posted: 04 Feb 2011 05:10 AM PST Patently Apple got their hands on an Apple patent application that shows future iPads may just be designed with a built-in kickstand. iPads, and perhaps Cinema Displays, would have the ability to pivot to allow for use in landscape and portrait mode. Apple states that products with displays need a mechanism to support the object in multiple configurations. The patent also mentions the possible addition of a kickstand to other Apple products such as the iPhone. Would you like to see a kickstand on a future version of the iPad or even maybe the iPhone someday? [ Patently Apple ] Future Apple iPads to have a built-in kickstand?
