Netflix: Apple TV has passed iPad in viewing hours

Netflix has announced that people are watching their streaming movie and TV service more on the 1 million selling Apple TV than on the 15 million selling iPad.

Possibly related: Apple made a great native Netflix front-end for Apple TV while Netflix made an embarrassingly terrible web-based app for iPad.

Is Netflix self-aware enough to realize this and release better iOS apps?

Bug: Cydia showing up with no files? Here’s how to fix it!

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 01:15 PM PST

Cydia has been showing up empty, with no files today, due to a source file corruption. If you’re experiencing the problem on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad we are going to walk you through how to fix it.

The fix is fairly simple as long as you know how to SSH into your iPhone. If you don’t know how to do so check out our SSH Guide and follow the instructions to get you started.

Once you get into your iPhone as navigating to a few menus and then renaming a file. What you want to do is navigate to:

/etc/apt/sources.list.d/

Once you get there you will see a source titled zodttd.list and you will want to rename it so zodttd.list.old. Once you do this go ahead and respring your iPhone or iPad and relaunch Cydia. Now you will have everything back to normal (minus the ZodTTD source for now.

Cydia’s creator, Saurik, has Tweeted to try to go to “Changes” inside of Cydia and hit refresh and let it reload and all will be fine as well. I personally tried this several times to no avail. So go ahead and try either method and let us know what works for you.

If you have any other issues check out the thread dedicated to this issue in our Jailbreak Froums.

AT&T secretly offering unlimited data to stop Verizon iPhone switchers?

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 10:57 AM PST

Associated Press is reporting that AT&T is allowing some customers who previously had unlimited data plans for iPhone to switch back to unlimited in order to prevent their switching to the Verizon iPhone.

Jose Argumedo, of Brentwood, N.Y., says he and a friend were switched to an unlimited plan recently after they called AT&T’s customer service. Both have iPhone 4s, and previously had iPhones.

Verizon is offering unlimited data as a lure to get AT&T customers to switch over. AT&T wouldn’t confirm any plan-matching was going on so if you call up and give it a try, let us know what happens!

DUE 1.3 hits App Store + Promo Code give away!

DUE, the awesome reminder app that makes sure you never miss anything important, has just updated to version 1.3.1 and includes a whole bunch of great new features:

  • Over the air Dropbox sync: View and add new reminders as normal while DUE retrieves your database in the background. It then finds the least intrusive time to merge your data. If you’re using a multitasking-capable device, DUE automatically uploads any changes back to Dropbox in the background on exit.
  • Backups: DUE automatically backs up your last 5 databases on quit. You can email yourself a copy of any backup file, or restore from a backup file from within Due.
  • Undo: Postponed a reminder wrongly? Accidentally marked a reminder as done? With Undo support, it’s okay to make mistakes. One tap and your reminder will be back to where and what it was before.

DUE has also very kindly offered to give away five (5) Promo Codes to TiPb readers. To enter simply post a comment below telling us what DUE could help you remember (and yes, the funnier the better!). Make sure you leave a valid email address. We won’t publish it but will use it to mail you your Promo Code if you win.

Apple posts Verizon upgrade eligibility, plans… then removes them

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 09:03 AM PST

Apple today posted a Verizon Wireless upgrade eligibility checker on their site along with voice/data/messaging plans — only to pull them down a short time later. While up the information seemed to confirm what we have been hearing about the data plans where there will be unlimited for $29.99 a month and the option to throw the hot spot on there with 2GB extra for an additional $20 a month.

Voice

  • 450 minutes $39.99/month
  • 900 minutes with unlimited to 5 selected people (any network) $59.99/month
  • Unlimited $69.99/month

Data

  • Unlimited iPhone $29.99/month
  • Unlimited iPhone + 2GB tethering/Personal 3G Hotspot $49.99/month

Messaging

  • Pay per use $0.20 per SMS/month, $0.25 per MMS/month
  • 250 messages $5/month
  • 500 messages $10/month
  • Unlimited messaging $20/month

These seem to be pretty straight forward with the current Verizon smartphone plans with the exception of the unlimited text messaging for $20/month. Current users have been offered 5,000 messages for $20/month but it appears as if they are at least going to offer iPhone users unlimited messages for the same amount per month. It seems like it would make sense for them to switch their smartphone plan to the same but we will have to wait and see.

Why did the information disappear? Maybe someone in Cupertino jumped the gun and posted it a tad early. If they decide to put it back up we will update you so you can check your eligibility and check out the plans for yourself.

Apple tweaks Apple.com, adds more HTML animation

Apple tweaks Apple.com, adds more HMTL animation

The Apple Online Store went down briefly last night but sorry everyone, no white iPhone 4 — just an slightly animated revamp of the Apple.com website.

Both the Mac and iPod pages get products that fly in and bounce into place and the menu on all pages now drops down into place and in general looks just a touch darker.

Since HTML5 has been renamed simply HTML there’s no super cool technology term for what Apple’s done other than adding eye candy. They do have a long history on the iPhone of using animation to help mask transition times and provide extra orientation information. I’m not sure the new Apple.com counts as a functionality improvement though. What do you think?

Google “not happy” with paid app sales, will make Market more like Apple App Store?

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 08:05 AM PST

While sales of Android-powered phones are increasing, Android Market’s paid app sales aren’t keeping pace so an unhappy Google seems to be considering several very Apple App Store-style changes to help give things a jumpstart. Speaking to Forbes platform manager Eric Chu said these changes include in-app purchases. iPhone and iPad users have shown they’ll often chafe at spending $1 to $10 on a game but will happily download a free game and then spend $10-$100+ dollars on in-app purchases to make their farms, castles, and mushroom homes look nicer.

Another change is the move to carrier billing since Google’s own checkout system hasn’t caught on and doesn’t provide the international footprint of Apple’s 90-country iTunes Store system. That’s important to get more paid apps available in more countries.

The most interesting change, however, involves… wait for it… a type of curation:

Chu said there is a human team in charge of weeding out apps that violate Android Market's terms of service. It sounds like Google is continuing to invest in that team.

While Apple does this in advance, rejecting apps that violate their guidelines before they hit the App Store, Google believes in a more open marketplace and so is handling violations after they hit the store. Whether that’s better or worse for both developers and user experience is debatable. However, finding high quality, paid apps is apparently a big challenge amid a sea of keyboards, low-functionality apps, and other flotsam and jetsam.

With companies like Amazon and the carriers themselves preparing to launch competing Android marketplaces of their own, perhaps with higher levels of curation and easier checkout experiences, Google could be feeling the pressure. 10 billion apps downloaded later, could becoming more like Apple’s App Store be the answer, or do you prefer having the option of another platform with a very different app ecosystem?

TiPb Asks: If you could only have 5 apps on your iPhone what would they be?

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 06:48 AM PST

If you could only have 5 apps on your iPhone what would they be and why? We’re talking App Store apps here, not built-in apps like Safari. For example, if I were stranded on a desert island (that just happened to have Wi-Fi and electricity to charge — you know, thanks to Dharma) these would be my must-have apps:

  • Skype [Free iTunes] so I could call out for pizza or even hail a ship to rescue me.
  • Articles [2.99 iTunes] (Wikipedia app), so I could find out how to cure that sea urchin sting (the solution isn’t pretty).
  • Twitter [Free iTunes] so that everyone would know how much I am suffering… or living it up on the island.
  • Instagram [Free iTunes] so that I could quickly post pictures to Twitter, Facebook and Flickr, because being on a deserted island is something you would have to see for yourself.
  • Chess [0.99 iTunes] because they say it takes a lifetime to master and I guess I would have a lot of time on my hands.

What apps would you simply not want to live without?
