Daily tip: How to change the default mail account on your iPhone or iPad Posted: 21 Jan 2011 03:08 PM PST Have multiple email accounts set up on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad and not sure how to set the right one up as your default? If you’re replying, it should behave and reply from whatever email the person contacted you through. But what about when you compose a new email? Having to toggle between mail accounts can be annoying if you have to do it constantly. If you typically send most of your emails through one mail account, click through to see how to make that account your default one.
This process should work the same on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad but I’ll be using iPhone screens for this example.
You’re done! Your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad should now default to whatever mail account you’ve specified. Give it a try and let us know if it made emailing a better experience for you. And if you have any other email tips, leave them in comments! Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to news@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…) Daily tip: How to change the default mail account on your iPhone or iPad is a story by TiPb. Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak for iPhone, iPad shown off on video Posted: 21 Jan 2011 01:23 PM PST pod2g of the Chronic Dev Team just teased an untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak for iPhone (and we presume iPod touch and iPad) on Twitter:
The video shows an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.1 Jailbroken in all its untethered glory. Apparently this might be coming soon via a greenpois0n update though whether or not they’ll use it now or save it for when Apple releases iOS 4.3 is unknown. (If they use it now, Apple could patch it in iOS 4.3 and they’ll have to come up with yet another Jailbreak). What do you say, you want iOS 4.2.1 untethered now, now, now or would you prefer them to play it safe so you can quickly untether iOS 4.3 in February or March? Video after the break! [@pod2g]

iPad cash register spotted at Grand Central Terminal Posted: 21 Jan 2011 11:18 AM PST More and more iOS devices are being used as point-of-sale merchant systems, with the latest sighting coming out of New York’s Grand Central Terminal where it’s being used as a full-fledged cash register for a quick moving coffee stop.
Shopkeep is the company behind the software that transforms the iPad into a cash register, allowing for things like printing receipts and also offers a full backend system through ShopKeep’s BackOffice software. BackOffice lets managers track sales, run data reports and manage inventory. It’s pretty neat to see the iPad used as a cash register and we hope to see more of this in the future. It seems like it makes the transaction process more simple and streamlined. Check out the video after the break and let us know what you think in the comments! [ShopKeep via Cult of Mac]

Griffin TuneJuice 2 Back-up Battery for iPhone – accessory review Posted: 21 Jan 2011 11:17 AM PST The Griffin TuneJuice 2 Back-up Battery for iPhone is a battery charger for iPhone or iPad touch (or traditional iPds) that, instead of being rechargeable, uses AAA batteries. That means to use of the TuneJuice you do not have to constantly find an outlet and make sure you recharge it before your iPhone. You can just throw in fresh batteries and get going. So if you are traveling for a long period of time and worry that you may need to keep a few items charged then this is the charger for you. To find out more follow us after the break!
The Griffin TuneJuice 2 is made to give you power when you will be without an outlet for a extended period of time. If you are planning a camping trip but still want to have your iPhone working throughout, and don’t mind packing a bunch of AAA batteries, this is perfect. The main unit slides open to allow you to insert the batteries then you just plug the 30 pin connector to your iPhone or iPod. I do find the 30 pin connector a bit odd. It’s long enough to be in the way but not long enough to be able to keep the TuneJuice in your pocket or purse and use your iPhone while charging. If anyone knows how this short cord is helpful let me know in the comments! In terms of power the Griffin TuneJuice for your iPhone will give you up to 14 additional hours of audio and up to 2 hours of additional video play. I was hoping that it would give me more power but to get that you need to carry extra batteries with you. The Griffin TuneJuice 2 Back-up Battery for iPhone is available from the TiPb iPhone accessory store. Pros
Cons

iOS 4.3 features: New wait button when adding contact phone numbers Posted: 21 Jan 2011 09:49 AM PST A minor but likely very welcome change in iOS 4.3 beta sees the addition of a wait button to the add contact phone number’s extended keyboard and the rejiggering of some of the other buttons. Wait will add a semicolon to the number as opposed to pause which adds a comma. Overall, the pause button has moved to where the ghosted 4 button used to be, the plus button has moved to where pause was, star has moved to where plus was and a new wait button has been added to where the ghosted 6 button used to be. Phew. Sounds more complicated than it is, so just check out the picture above and let us know what you think. Easier extension adding for one and all? XBMC for Apple TV , iPad and iPhone 4 available now [jailbreak] Posted: 21 Jan 2011 08:04 AM PST XBMC is now available as a jailbreak app for the Apple TV (2010), iPad and iPhone 4. XBMC, for those that do not know, is a free open source media center application, that until today was only available for Linux, OSX, Windows and the original Xbox. The Apple TV version is a full XBMC install and allows full network sharing of media, hardware decoding of 720p and 1080p movies plus everything else that XBMC has to offer. The iPad version also offers full hardware accelerated video playback and network access to media. The iPhone 4 has been included in the release however the devs do point out that navigation is a bit frustrating. The app is jailbreak only and you will not find it in the App Store anytime soon. It is free to install, so what are you waiting for? Check out the videos after the break, one running on the Apple TV and the other on the iPad then let us know if you're going to be jailbreaking and installing XBMC! [xbmc]

iOS 4.3 beta contains references to iOS 5 Media Stream, Photo Streaming Posted: 21 Jan 2011 06:26 AM PST Mark Gurman from 9to5Mac applied his ninjary skills to the latest iOS 4.3 beta and came away Media Stream and Photo Streaming, which could just be Apple’s next big iOS 5 step in social sharing.
Apple currently has MobileMe and Ping and Game Center as separate cloud services, the latter two functioning as very specific social networks — one for music, the other for gaming. Find my Friends is a reference to an extension of MobileMe’s current Find my iPhone service and might bring a Latitude-style social location network into the mix. With Google under new management but still up in Apple’s business with Android, and Facebook rumored to be eyeing the phone space, Apple will need a stronger online/social component. There seem to be a lot of pieces to the puzzle and that’s part of my concern — Apple’s online and social strategy still seems to be in pieces. Hopefully they’re working towards something more unified and Apple-like. A single Apple login that would not only work for iTunes, MobileMe, Game Center, Ping, whatever this new Media Stream service is — and also let you activate a new phone and download your preferences without plugin into iTunes — would be killer. Apple’s got that huge new data center coming online and they’ve got an iOS 5 preview event almost certainly coming this spring. What would you like to see from Media Stream and Apple’s online/social networks in general? [9to5Mac] iOS 4.3 beta contains references to iOS 5 Media Stream, Photo Streaming is a story by TiPb. New “Universal Bumpers” now fit Verizon iPhone, available at Apple Stores? Posted: 20 Jan 2011 08:27 PM PST Alerio shared his video with us, showing what looks like a new “Universal Bumper” designed to fit both the existing GSM/AT&T iPhone and the new CDMA/Verizon iPhone with its slightly redesigned antenna and downward-shifted volume controls.
He says the differences aren’t many but they were enough that Apple’s old bumpers wouldn’t fit. The TiPb iPhone Accessory Store is keeping their own list of compatible Verizon iPhone cases (cheap plug win!) but its good to see Verizon iPhone buyers will have some additional choices available come February 10. Video after the break!
