Daily Tip: How to configure VPN access on your iPhone, iPad

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 12:59 PM PST

Curious how to configure access to a VPN client on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad? L2TP, PPTP, and IPSec VPN support are all built right into iOS and we’ll show you how to set them up after the break!

One thing to note is that you’ll need to make sure you have all the settings and information about your VPN service handy. Some companies will not allow mobile access to a VPN, and some carriers limit 3G VPN access to business accounts, so that’s another thing you’ll need to check on before attempting to add one.

These screenshots show iPhone setup but iPod touch and iPad are similar.

First you’ll need to configure your VPN by adding the settings for your VPN (in most cases, these are provided by the system administrator or IT person at your company).

To configure your VPN, do the follow:

  1. Tap Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap Network
  4. Tap VPN
  5. Tap Add VPN Configuration
  6. Along the top you will see some tabs, you’ll need to select which type of configuration you need. In most cases, you’ll choose IPSec (unless your system administrator has told you different). For this example, I’ve used IPSec.
  7. Enter the information for your VPN in the corresponding fields. If you used a proxy, make sure to enable it towards the bottom of the settings page.
  8. Tap Save

You’ve now configured your VPN for use. Now you’ll need to turn it on.

  1. From your homescreen, tap Settings
  2. Under the main settings page, you’ll now see a VPN option, this only appears when you have a VPN configured. Toggle the switch to On
  3. Your phone should connect to the VPN. If an error message pops up, go back into your VPN settings and make sure all your settings are input correctly.

That’s it! If you guys have ever used this, let us know your input too. Have any issues setting up a VPN? Check out our TiPb Forums to get helpful from many of our awesome community members.

ChangeWave: AT&T iPhone users looking to switch to Verizon?

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 12:47 PM PST

AT&T Users Switching to Verizon

A new survey from ChangeWave takes a look at how many AT&T subscribers are looking to switch to the Verizon iPhone. The news isn’t pretty: it reveals the highest churn rate AT&T has seen since ChangeWave began surveying mobile subscribers. A total of 4,050 subscribers were surveyed, with 15% of AT&T and T-Mobile users saying they were likely to switch carriers in the next 90 days, compared to only 4% from Verizon.

Diving even deeper with AT&T specifically, things don’t look much better. The survey was conducted before the Verizon iPhone was officially announced, but still shows 16% of AT&T subscribers were looking to jump ship to Verizon once they have the iPhone. Another 23% said they weren’t sure, but could possibly make the switch. But when they looked at AT&T iPhone users only, they found as high as one-in-four (26%) were likely to leave AT&T for Verizon.

This somewhat falls in line with our own poll showing 41% of readers would be sticking with AT&T, while 15% were willing to switch for the Verizon iPhone. Although 15% is a pretty big chunk, it doesn’t feel like we’ll be seeing a mass migration from AT&T to Verizon, although the impact will definitely be felt by AT&T in the coming months.

The culprit? It looks like AT&T users aren’t satisfied with reception under the network (42%) along with issues with dropped calls (27%), and although AT&T has been making upgrades to their infrastructure (dropped call rates dropped from 6% to 4.7% since the last survey) to help with the problem, it may be too little too late for AT&T with some of their iPhone customers.

So how much do you think the Verizon iPhone could disrupt the carrier market? And more specifically, will you be making the switch yourself? Let us know in the comments!

iOS 4.3 beta points to iPad 2 cameras but no change in screen resolution

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 12:10 PM PST

Following repeated rumors that the iPad 2 will be equipped with a retina display, 9To5Mac has made a discovery that may prove otherwise. After digging through the latest SDK, they found plenty of references that point towards the iPad 2 having the ability to take photos and shoot video; however, the size of the camera shutter images is 1024 x 768 – the exact same resolution of the current iPad.

So, either Apple has intentionally placed these images in the SDK to throw us off, or — like TiPb has been saying for a while now — the technology simply isn’t there to support a full-on retina display on the iPad 2. What do you think?

TiPb Asks: Are you happy with what’s in the iOS 4.3 beta?

Are you happy with what's in the iOS 4.3 beta?

The iOS 4.3 beta brings some really awesome things, like multitouch gestures to iPad, Wi-Fi personal hotspot to iPhone, better AirPlay support to both and… a new Notes font? (And no iPhone 3G love!)

There won’t be anything major like new notifications until iOS 5 but let us know what you think for now — is that enough for a 4.3 update, more than you expected, less than you wanted?

CDMA iPhone on its way to China, Korea, and Japan?

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 09:34 AM PST

Looks like the CDMA variant of Apple’s iPhone might eventually make its way to carriers in China, Korea, and Japan. According to the not always reliable Digitimes, Apple suppliers currently expect around 7 million CDMA iPhones to be sold in the first quarter of 2011. That’s a lot of iPhones, no matter how you look at it.

Apple’s two main suppliers, Foxconn and Pegatron are also slated to turn a large profit this year due to the release of a CDMA variant. Foxconn started shipping the CDMA variant of the iPhone 4 back in December 2010, while Pegatron has started shipping this month. Digitimes maintains that Foxconn will ship solely to the United States while Pegatron will ship to other countries such as China, Japan, and Korea. The Verizon iPhone is set to double the number of iPhone users in the market alone. With these other countries added to the CDMA list, the iPhone will be available to a whole new array of customers as well.

I’d say with the GSM and CDMA variants set to be available on even more carriers and in more countries, Apple is in for a year of record numbers. It’s also great that customers in the US now have a choice. And if you’re in the US and not sure which to pick, take a look at our Verizon vs AT&T iPhone comparison.

Google Places with Hotpot Released for iPhone

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 09:05 AM PST

iPhoneGooglePlaces

Google have released Google Places with Hotpot on the iPhone. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Google Places is a free app that allows you to find local businesses and rate them, and with their new ‘hotpot’ feature, Google can suggest new places you’ll like, based on your previously ratings.

The app uses your location to suggest nearby places for you to rate. You can give a standard star rating out of 5, and depending on the location, optional ratings including: Food, Atmosphere, Value and Service.

You can view ratings from most review sites such as Yelp or Qype, as well as Google’s own ratings and it comes with 9 separate categories as standard (Restaurants, Coffee Shops, Bars, ATMs, Gas Stations, Hotels, Attractions, Pizza Parlours and Post Offices) but you can add personal searches as well, to cater to your tastes.

This isn’t a ‘check-in’ application like Gowalla or Foursquare, but this is more similar to apps like Yelp or AroundMe.

What do you guys think about the new Google Places? Will you be using it? Let us know.

Seas0nPass makes for easier AppleTV Jailbreak

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 09:03 AM PST

Seas0nPass has just been released for jailbroken AppleTV users. Up until now, there hasn’t been easy to use jailbreak tools for the AppleTV. Hopefully Seas0nPass can change all that.

Seas0nPass offers some of the same basic functionality utilities like PwnageTool already offers iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users. It will currently jailbreak the most current version of AppleTV iOS (4.2.1). Seas0nPass for AppleTV also offers an easier tethered boot option as well as an ability to create and restore from custom firmwares (IPSW) files. This will be nice for users on newer firmwares that may not offer an untethered option yet.

Currently Seas0nPass is only available for Mac users running Mac OS 10.6 or later but a Windows version should be coming soon.

Seas0nPass is available for free and the code is open source and available on Github now. If you give it a try, let us know how it works for you!

Rumor: Apple removing Home Button on the next iPad and iPhone?

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 06:49 AM PST

No home button on next iPad, iPhone

Boy Genius is reporting that, according to a source, iPad 2 won’t have a physical home button and will rely completely on the multitouch gestures introduced in the iOS 4.3 beta. They were also told this change may be extended to the iPhone 5 later this year.

We have exclusively been told that the reason Apple just added multitouch gestures for the iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button [...] Our source said Apple employees are already testing iPads and iPhones with no home buttons on the Apple campus, and it's possible we will see this new change materialize with the next-generation iPad and iPhone devices set to launch this year.

In addition, they state that Photo Booth (more evidence of a front-facing iPad camera) and iLife apps will be available on the iPad around the same time the iPad 2 hits the market.

Removing the Home Button is a pretty far-fetched idea. As John Gruber points out, gestures can supplement the Home Button like keyboard shortcuts supplement GUI buttons for expert users, but removing the Home Button would completely confuse a new user.

What do you think, should the Home Button go away?

Find My Friends feature hidden in iOS 4.3?

Posted: 13 Jan 2011 06:48 AM PST

It looks as though we will be seeing a new feature soon in iOS called Find My Friends, an extension to Find my iPhone that could be similar to services such as Google Latitude.

A reference to the name was found in the iOS 4.3 beta for developers and it appears to be linked to MobileMe accounts. If it is similar to Latitude, it would allows you to track your friends via their iPhone’s GPS (Naturally you would have to agree to broadcast your position so as to protect your privacy).

It seems as if location based services have been booming as of late but do you want people knowing where you are at any given time or is this another intrusive step forward in the mobile world? We want to know if you would use this service when/if it goes live.
