Kevin Rose: iPad 2 coming Feb. 1 with dual cameras, Retina Display

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 05:21 PM PST

Digg founder Kevin Rose, whose record with Apple rumors ranges from spot on to completely wrong, now claims he has it on good authority that iPad 2 will be announced in 3-4 weeks, possibly February 1, and include dual cameras as well as a Retina Display.

Dual cameras seem almost certain given how Apple is pushing FaceTime (and given our video hands-on with the dummy iPad 2 at CES). Retina Display though? We’ve been over that before but just to recap…

The current iPad is 1024 x 768. Apple needs to double that in both directions to go Retina, which would make 2048 x 1536. At 9.7-inches. That’s more pixels than Apple’s 27-inch LED cinema display at a fraction of the seize. Even if LG or whomever could crank out those panels, the cost would almost certainly be prohibitive. And if Apple tries to do anything other than double the resolution, current apps would either look terrible if stretched or would have UI elements shrunken below the point of usability by boxing.

Sure, maybe Apple will invent automagic resolution independence but anyone who’s seen even the straight “blurry double chunky” pixel doubling mode on the current iPad knows sometimes less is more.

Daily Tip: How to use audio scrubbing with iPhone and iPad [Beginner]

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 12:41 PM PST

Audio Scrubbing in the iPod app

Ever been listening to a podcast on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad an wondered how to easily scrub forward or back? Or maybe you were watching one of your favorite shows but wanted to skip through a boring ad and quickly get back to the content?

When Apple introduced iOS 3 last year, they included a much needed addition to the iPod (Music/Video) app called audio scrubbing. In this tip we’re going to quickly show you how to use this awesome feature and have better control over what you’re listening to, plus a few other nice iPod tips you may have overlooked. Find out how after the break!

All you need to do is tap and hold the seek-slider at the top of the ‘Now Playing’ screen once you’re in the iPod app. From here you can slide your finger left or right to adjust where you are in playback. Something people often overlook when scrubbing through audio is that you can move your finger down to get to different levels of scrubbing (Hi-Speed, Half Speed, Quarter Speed and Fine Scrubbing), giving you much more precise control. And that’s that!

iPod App 30 second jump and 2x speed

Bonus tip: You can also jump back 30 seconds by hitting the ‘30′ button below the seek bar (see above picture). If you’d like to go back a full two minutes for example, simply tap the button 4 times and you’re good to go! In addition to jumping back, you can speed up or slow down your audio by tapping the button on the far-right below the seek bar. This is great for users who need to get through long speeches or lengthy audiobooks more quickly. This feature isn’t available while listening to music, however, and is replaced with the Genius feature.

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you'd like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. (If it's especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we'll even give ya a reward…)

Griffin CarTrip jacks your iPhone into your car computer – TiPb at CES 2011

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:33 AM PST

Griffin’s CarTrip is a tiny Bluetooth peripheral that plugs into the diagnostic port contained on most modern cars and transmits back usage data and error messages to an app on your iPhone. You can use this data to track different performance data over time to try and maximize your fuel efficiency, or just to pull off any problem reports so you know when — and why! — you need to go to a mechanic.

We got to take a look at it live from the CES 2011 show floor so check out the video up top and let us know whether you’ll be getting one for your ride in the comments below!

Ten 1 shows off Fling thumbsticks for iPad gaming – TiPb at CES 2011

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:03 AM PST

Ten 1 design branching out from the Pogo stylus and at CES 2011 we got to see their new Fling thumbstick attachments for iPad in full on gaming action. Simple but genius, they stick to your iPad via suction cups and once you orient them on top of the virtual thumb pads for arcade or first-person shooters, they become a capacitive conduit to give you tactile feedback and full control. They’re even engineered to return to the center whenever you relax the pressure, just like a real thumbstick.

Check out the video above and let us know if you’d consider getting these thumbsticks for your iPad!

Sphero iPhone, iPad controlled robot – TiPb at CES 2011

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 09:21 AM PST

Sphero by Orbotix is a robotic ball you can control with your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. You can swipe, you can use the gyro and accelerometer, and since they’ve opened up the API developers can create pretty much any games they can think of.

Availability is later this year. Fun factor is high. We just hope they don’t become self-aware too quickly…

Mandatory Verizon face-to face training Jan 25 to Feb 4… for iPhone?

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 08:01 AM PST

iphone_4_verizon

Verizon is having another one of their mandatory face-to-face training sessions for an “iconic pre-order”, this one scheduled for January 25 to February 4, 2011, and it could just be for the Verizon iPhone. That’s what many seem to believe, at least.

An alternative could be the Android-powered Thunderbolt, but we’re being told February is blackout month for Verizon which has not been the case before.

This source has been good to SPE in the past but if there’s anything we’ve learned from years and years of rumors — we’ll believe the Verizon iPhone is here when Steve Jobs holds it up, and/or it goes live on Apple.

Still, it jives with reports of Apple employees getting blacked out during a similar period and seriously, the amount of rumors coalescing around early February 2011 sure are interesting.

What do you think, has the go order been given?

TiPb asks: What is your favorite piece of technology you own?

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 06:28 AM PST

iPhone and iPad

If you could only keep one piece of technology would that be? Your iPad, your iPhone or perhaps something else? We have been asking each other that question a lot lately on our podcasts and TiPb TV. So I wanted to know what was everyone else’s most favored piece of technology. For me it is my iPhone. I keep it close by me at all times and it works as my personal mini computer, my phone and my entertainment device. What tech would be your sole survivor?

Design Drawings for the possible next iPhone leaked

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 06:18 AM PST

It appears that what could be the design drawings for the next generation iPhone have been leaked and published by the folks over at Tw.Apple.Pro for all of our viewing pleasures. The pictures posted don’t really allow us to see much but they do appear to match the leaked casing pictures/video that we posted on Wednesday. Stay with us after the break for more on this story.

The YouTube video that showed the possible next generation iPhone parts was removed due to copy right issues. Apple wanting the video pulled could hint towards possible attempts at keeping leaks of the next iPhone a secret unlike what happened with the iPhone 4. The drawings appear to match pretty well with the photos though and it seems to be a subtle sign of things to come.

So again we ask you what do you think – Real, Fake, or Really Fake?
