Daily tip: How to navigate to contact addresses in Maps

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 02:07 PM PST

Heading out to family and friends for the holidays and curious how to easily find their addresses in the iPhone, iPod touch, or Maps app? Well here is a great tip to make navigating a little bit easier, and we’ll show it to you after the break!

If you are like me you don’t memorize anyone’s contact information anymore. You simply enter their phone number, email address, website, and address into your contacts list on your iPhone and then, whenever you need it, you just tap on it. Luckily Apple ties iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad Contacts into the other apps, like Maps!

First, if you haven’t done so yet, make sure you’ve entered address information for the Contacts you will be visiting. Then:

  • Open the Maps application
  • Select Directions on the bottom menu
  • Select the Start box and choose “Current Location”
  • Select the End box and start typing in the contacts name
  • Select the contact once it appears
  • Let it load and click on Start at the top right

Bonus tip: If you’re in Contacts, you can tap right on the address to switch to Maps and see where they’re located.

Now you can be on the way to your destination without having to type in the address manually. Let us know if you plan to use this feature as you hit the roads this holiday season.

Daily tips will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

iOS 5 wants: Game sync via Game Center

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 09:57 AM PST

I’m playing Infinity Blade on my iPhone 4 but if I switch to my iPad I have to start the game over, fresh, as if I’d never played before — it makes me hope Game Center in iOS 5 will sync my game state between devices so I can just pick up any of them and keep playing from where I was. Not just for Infinity Blade but for Angry Birds and Angry Birds HD and tons of other games. All of them, actually.

Currently that sort of sync is left up to the developer. Epic/Chair and Rovio/Chillingo didn’t build any sort of sync feature into their games the way Apple did with iBooks, Amazon did with Kindle, Netflix does with their app, or ngmoco’s Plus+ network does with their games, so we don’t get one in Infinity Blade or Angry Birds.

Jeremy and Leanna have complained about this before and Chad and Alley got into a real fight over it on iPad Live!, but wouldn’t it be great if Apple extended Game Center to allow any developer, large or small, to easily add code that would sync game state data for users?

iBooks has your iTunes account, Kindle your Amazon account, Netflix their own account, ngmoco your Plus+ account. I don’t want any more accounts. I don’t want an Infinity Blade or an Angry Birds accounts. I don’t even want a Game Center account, frankly, I’d rather just have my iTunes account cover that as well, but since I have a Game Center account and most games tie into it already, it seems like a great single point of convergence.

It would even leave the door open to gaming on other people’s devices. Just log them out of Game Center, log yourself in, launch the game, play, then log out again. Go back to your device, keep playing.

Achievements are nice. Being able to keep them cross-device would be even nicer.

Peak Meetings HD for iPad – app review

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 09:03 AM PST

This week I took at look at Peak Meetings HD for iPad and so far, I like what I see. I mean, meetings, meetings, meetings. There has to be a good way to capture meeting information on iPad, right? Sure you can just type your notes out, but wouldn’t be great if you could use templates for your meetings? How about have them in an organized format? Read on to find out!

When making a meeting, you can choose what type of meeting its going to be. Informational? Update? Problem Solving? What Peak Meetings attempts to do is to help you organize, prioritize and most of all, streamline your meeting notes. Peak Meetings does this by giving you some key sections that are customizable that vary based on the type of meeting you have. Let’s look at a basic meeting:

  • Title
  • Goals
  • Agenda
  • Notes
  • Location
  • Attendees
  • Project
The Title sections allows you to simply enter the title of your meeting. You can make this as fancy or as simple as you need. The next section, Goals, I often find missing from most of the meetings I go to…. Agenda allows you to add bullet point items, just like you might list in a Keynote or PowerPoint presentation. Almost all sections in Peak Meetings are divided into smaller groups should you want to take advantage of it. For example…

With Agenda type of meeting, these bullet points are divided even further into four sub-topics:

Topic- the title of what is to be discussed

Timing- how long this topic should last

Responsible- who is presenting this (gets populated from the Attendees section; more on that later)

Details- specifics for this topic to be discussed

Problems- why/what and ideal outcome

Options- pros and cons list

Solutions- needed and hurdles

Actions- responsible person, due date, details

After you have cataloged all of the above information, you can then write even more details in the notes section. Think if it as a way to summarize your meeting at a high level; the details are accounted for above.

Next you can enter in location information such as 4th floor, meeting room B. There is even a specific area to enter the access code for a conference call. To top it off, you can enter attendees for the meeting. Attendees are pulled in from your contacts or can be entered from scratch. Finally, all of this information is great but unless you can tie to a project, it is ultimately not worth it. So, you can add multiple projects as needed to your meeting.

Once you gave taken all of your meeting notes you can easily email them. This, my friends is where it all starts to come together. Remember when you added “attended” contacts to your meeting? Well, now when you email it, your attendees emails show in the compose email window! Very nice.

The next thing that you might be thinking is, “Gee Chad, I have weekly meetings where the agenda, etc. is always the same”. No worries my friends, you can easily select a meeting and duplicate it.

That sums up Peak Meetings HD for iPad. This app fits nicely in my workflow. For example, as many of you know, I love Evernote. Well, I also send a copy of the meeting via email to Evernote when I am done with the meeting. Now I have a consistent, nicely formatted meeting notes instantly searchable.

Skype not working for you? You’re not alone

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 08:01 AM PST

Skype, the most popular VoIP (Voice over IP) service on the planet, has been down for many users for almost a day now. Users either can’t log into Skype or if they can, when they try to place a Skype call they’re told they’re offline. It’s the same if you’re on the desktop or using the iPhone app. You just can’t connect.

We typically use Skype to record our iPhone Live! and iPad Live! podcasts, so last night we had to scramble to find an alternative (we ended up using iChat voice) but for businesses that have come to rely on Skype for critical communications, it was a cold reminder that no service is immune to outages.

Do you use Skype? How has the service worked for you over the last 24 hours? What alternatives have you come up with in the meanwhile?

The iPhone 4 cake

What could be better than a fabulous iPhone 4? An iPhone 4 made of Dark Chocolate Cake with Dark Belgian Chocolate Truffle filling, big enough to serve 30 people (or 10 TiPb writers!).

These delicious delectables are crafted by Larissa Volnitskaia of cakes.keyartstudio.com and rumor has it iPhones and even iPads are hot commodities on the dessert scene these days. Given the level of detail in the picture above (look at those icons!) I don’t doubt it. (There are even some more iPhone, iPod touch and BlackBerry cakes in the gallery.)

If your birthday or special occasion is coming up, are you considering an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad cake?

iPad 2 to be smaller and have better audio? [rumor]

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 06:09 AM PST

According to an anonymous Chinese source, iPad 2 will be slightly smaller, but will retain the 9.7" LCD panel. This basically means that Apple has reduced the size of the bezel surrounding the screen to decrease the overall size. The source claims the new dimensions will be 238mm x 186mm against 242.8mm x 189.7mm dimensions of the current iPad. The rear of the iPad 2 will also be flatter and similar in styling to the latest iPod Touch.

There was more excitement a few weeks ago, after a case supplier allegedly leaked some information on iPad 2, suggesting that a USB or SD Card slot may be included. This new rumor however puts paid to that idea by suggesting that the slot is actually for a wide-ranged speaker for improved audio quality.

The final part of the rumor suggests that the ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) has been moved to a new position at the top centre of the rear panel and has also been reduced in size to 3mm.

Apple did take some heat for the thickness of the bezel surrounding the screen on the first iPad, so making it smaller on iPad 2 does make a lot of sense. Improved audio quality is also important for a media centric device so these rumors, while not ground breaking, may turn out to be spot on. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

President Obama calls Steve Jobs’ success an example of American wealth

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 06:08 AM PST

During a speech yesterday, President Obama cited Apple’s very own Steve Jobs’ success as an example of someone who Americans should expect to be rich. He used Jobs as an example to show others the possibilities of business in our modern times. President Obama answered a reporters question prior to making his comments about Jobs.

What is…a fact is that people in the top 1 percent, people in the top one-tenth of 1 percent, or one-hundredth of 1 percent have a larger share of income and wealth than any time since the 1920s. Those are just facts. That’s not a feeling on the part of Democrats. Those are facts.

Those comments then rolled right into the President’s comments about the middle class and the American dream, including Steve Jobs and Apple.

And something that’s always been the greatest strength of America is a thriving, booming middle class, where everybody has got a shot at the American dream. And that should be our goal. That should be what we’re focused on. How are we creating opportunity for everybody? So that we celebrate wealth. We celebrate somebody like a Steve Jobs, who has created two or three different revolutionary products. We expect that person to be rich, and that’s a good thing. We want that incentive. That’s part of the free market.

We knew President Obama met with Steve Jobs but apparently he has taken quite the liking to Apple’s CEO. Would you agree with the President in saying that Jobs’ success is an incentive for others? Do you think Steve Jobs lives up to these praises given by the President?
