Zynga lays off employees in midst of Apple event Posted: 23 Oct 2012 03:36 PM PDT Zynga, in an obvious attempt to avoid bad press, laid off some 100-odd employees during Apple's iPad mini event today. A total of 5% of their full-time staff are on the way out, and many were given two hours to clear out of the office today according to inside sources. The Boston studio is shutting down completely, while the Austin studio will see significant reductions. The Japan and UK studios are on the chopping block for closure. 13 games will be shut down, with a significant reduction in investment in The Ville due to dwindling performance. Though the vast majority of these games are on Facebook, there is a fair bit of overlap on iOS. Zynga's downward spiral doesn't bode particularly well for the titles it will be maintaining on mobile. It seems awfully skeezy to try to bury this news under all of the iPad mini noise, though if Zynga's going through a rough patch already, one could understand why they would want to minimize the publicity. Some of Zynga's more popular iOS titles include Words with Friends, Horn, Draw Something, Poker, Drop7, and FarmVille. How many Zynga games do you play? Would you be heartbroken if they were taken off the App Store? Source: Joystiq |
iPad mini vs. Kindle Fire 7 HD vs. Nexus 7 vs. Surface RT vs. PlayBook: Spec shootout! Posted: 23 Oct 2012 03:29 PM PDT Apple has just announced the iPad mini and that means they've fully entered the small tablet space. Priced starting at $329, however, they didn't obliterate it as some (including yours truly) thought they would. There's now plenty of room under Apple's umbrella for competitors to compete on price. Right off the bat we have the new Amazon Kindle Fire 7 HD, which while more media appliance than tablet, and only available in a handful of countries, is still hugely competitive in that space and in those places. The Nexus 7, which is transitioning from 8G/16GB to 32GB and likely getting cellular is cheaper, but runs more smartphone apps than tablet apps. Still, if that's all you need or care about, it's the best bigger iPod touch on the market right now. Microsoft's Surface for Windows RT isn't really a small tablet but since no small Windows 8 tablets have been announced yet, we're including it here as well. Microsoft's messaging is still confusing and poorly articulated, however, so I'm waiting to see how it holds up and makes sense in the real world. RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook, one of the original 7-inch tablets, is still one of the most interesting. It's reportedly going to be upgraded to BlackBerry 10 next year, and if you look around you can find them for as little as $149. That's a pretty good value proposition if you really don't want an iPad mini. Apple has already sold over 100,000,00 of the 9.7-inch iPads. No one has really cracked the small tablet market though. Will the iPad mini be the first successful, mass market, small form-factor tablet, or did Apple leave enough of a price gap underneath it for a next-generation Nexus 7 or more widely marketed Amazon Kindle Fire to steal ground? |
iBooks Author 2.0 available in Mac App Store Posted: 23 Oct 2012 03:00 PM PDT iBooks Author, Apple book creation app for Mac, has gone 2.0 and is now available in the Mac App Store. It includes the ability to make portrait-only books, embed custom fonts, and more. As the resident math nerd, the most exciting new feature to me is support for creating mathematic expressions with LaTeX and MathML.
Have any of you written a book with iBooks Author, yet? Are you planning to? I started a math study guide a long time ago and never finished partly because of how tedious it was to add equations, but now that iBooks Author supports LaTeX, I just may finish that project soon rather than later! LTE-enabled iPad mini and fourth-gen iPad will come to Sprint Posted: 23 Oct 2012 02:19 PM PDT When the cellular iPad mini and 4th-generation iPad launch next month, Sprint will find itself standing next to Verizon and AT&T in offering iPads for use on their LTE network. With the launch of the 3rd-generation iPad in March of this year, Sprint was left out when LTE compatibility was announced. Sprint confirmed iPad mini and fourth-gen availability in a press release today: "Sprint (NYSE: S) today announced that in the coming weeks it will offer iPad mini and fourth generation iPad. Sprint will offer these new iPads with a range of attractive data plans that will allow customers to connect to its 4G LTE network." Sprint and Verizon will share models of both devices that run on either carrier's CDMA and LTE networks. AT&T will have a separate GSM and LTE model. Both the CDMA and GSM models will support international 3G and LTE bands, meaning that the Sprint and Verizon iPads will still be compatible with cellular networks when traveling abroad. The price for the cellular models of iPad mini start at $459 for the 16GB model, moving up to $559 and $659 for the 32GB and 64GB models, respectively. For the 4th generation iPad, the cellular models start at $629 for the 16GB cellular model, with the 32GB costing $729, and the 64GB priced at $829. The cellular models of both the iPad mini and the 4th-generation iPad will launch mid-November. Any takers? Which carrier are you siding with? Source: Sprint |
Swell Apple Store manager extends return period for remorseful iPad third-gen buyers Posted: 23 Oct 2012 02:00 PM PDT One San Francisco Apple store has extended the return period from 14 days to 30 days for those that are kicking themselves for buying a third-generation iPad so close to Apple's announcement of the iPad 4. Apparently this policy change is on a store-by-store basis however, so don't get your hopes up too high for some Apple-wide policy change for the launch of the new iPad. The Stockton Street Apple Store manager also said that the usual 14-day return stretch would stay in place if there was significant wear and tear, but seriously, how badly could you bang up an iPad 3 in under a month? I checked in with a few Apple stores in my area. In Ottawa, it didn't sound like they were budging on the two-week return period, while the Toronto store said that they're flexible about this kind of thing at launch time, though they have made any solid changes just yet. If you do end up calling your local Apple Store, leave a comment and let us know what's up. Any third-gen iPad owners in this boat? Would you otherwise go out of your way to upgrade, or are the differences with the last iPad too slight? Via: CNET |

Apple announces Fusion Drive upgrade options for Macs Posted: 23 Oct 2012 10:49 AM PDT As a part of the big iMac announcement today, Apple introduced a new kind of storage for their computers called Fusion Drive. It combines both flash and traditional HDD storage into a single logical drive. The way it works is that your Mac will automatically move over frequently-used applications or you can choose what options you'd like on the flash portion of your hard drive and which files you want on the regular part of your hard drive. This means that applications that are on flash storage will run a lot quicker than those on the traditional portion of the HDD. Solid state hard drives are still quite pricey and gets iMac users a few more options when it comes to speeding up their computers as well as having mass storage at a much more reasonable cost. |

Apple introduces new 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display Posted: 23 Oct 2012 10:38 AM PDT After much rumor, at Apple's iPad and Mac event today they've now taken the covers off the 13-Inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display. Much like the 15-Inch MacBook Pro announced earlier this year, the 13-Inch MacBook Pro drops the optical drive, adds in two Thunderbolt and two USB 3.0 ports along with HDMI and the typicial SD card slot. You'll also find a 3.5mm headphone jack and finally, the new Magsafe 2 adapter are all in place. To achieve a 20 percent thinner profile that brings the 13-Inch to a 0.75-inch thickness with a weight of only 3.57lbs, Apple had to sacrifice discrete graphics so internally, you'll be making use of the Ivy Bridge processors integrated HD 4000 graphics to power that 2560 x 1600 screen resolution. The new 13-Inch MacBook Pro with Retina ships today starting at $1699 with the base model coming with a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM along with a 128GB SSD drive and prices go up from there depending on your configuration which, can reach into over $3200 fully specced out with 2.9GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7 and a 768GB SSD drive. Full press release below.
Apple Introduces 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display SAN JOSE, California—October 23, 2012—Apple® today introduced an all-new version of its popular 13-inch MacBook® Pro featuring a stunning Retina™ display and all flash storage in a new compact design. At a mere 0.75 inches and 3.57 pounds, the remarkably portable 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display is 20 percent thinner and almost a pound lighter than the current 13-inch MacBook Pro. "The 13-inch MacBook Pro is our most popular Mac, and today it gets completely reinvented with a new thin and light design, fast flash storage and a gorgeous Retina display," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "With vivid colors, razor sharp text and more pixels than anyone else's 15 or 17-inch notebooks, the Retina display completely changes what you expect from a notebook." The new MacBook Pro packs more than 4 million pixels into its 13-inch Retina display, nearly twice the number of pixels in an HD television. At 227 pixels per inch, the Retina display's pixel density is so high the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels at a normal viewing distance, so images look sharp and text looks like it does on the printed page. With four times the pixels of the current 13-inch MacBook Pro, you can view and edit video in pixel-accurate 1080p and see a new level of detail in high resolution images. The 13-inch Retina display uses IPS technology for a 178-degree wide viewing angle, and has 75 percent less reflection and 28 percent higher contrast than the current generation. Featuring flash storage that is up to four times faster than traditional notebook hard drives, the all-new MacBook Pro is extremely responsive, whether it's waking from sleep or launching your favorite apps.* Fast flash storage combined with the latest Intel dual-core processors gives the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display plenty of power to run your most demanding apps with ease. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display features 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processors with the option to choose faster 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 processors, Intel HD Graphics 4000, 8GB of 1600 MHz memory, and up to 768GB of flash storage. Two Thunderbolt and two USB 3.0 ports allow users to connect to multiple displays and high-performance devices, and a new HDMI port offers quick connectivity to an HDTV. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display also features a FaceTime® HD camera, dual microphones, improved speakers, three-stream 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, and a MagSafe® 2 power port. The 13-inch MacBook Pro battery delivers up to 7 hours of wireless productivity and can remain in standby for up to 30 days.** With the all new Power Nap feature in OS X® Mountain Lion, your MacBook Pro with Retina display stays up to date while it sleeps. Power Nap automatically refreshes Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, and Photo Stream, and when the notebook is plugged in, downloads software updates and backs up your Mac® using Time Machine®. Continuing Apple's commitment to energy efficiency and the environment, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display meets stringent Energy Star 5.2 requirements and achieves an EPEAT Gold rating.*** Each unibody enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and comes standard with energy efficient LED-backlit displays that are mercury-free and made with arsenic-free glass. Updated Apple iPad and Mac event wallpaper Posted: 23 Oct 2012 06:59 AM PDT Apple has put up some new artwork for their iPad and Mac event today, so we went ahead and made an updated, though still quick and dirty version for Retina wallpaper. It's 2048x2048 so it'll fit a Retina iPad perfectly. It'll also fit a Retina iPhone or iPod touch, just center it up and crop off the sides. To use the wallpaper, tap the image below to open it full size, then touch and hold down on the image below, save to Camera Roll, go to Settings, Brightness and Wallpaper, choose Camera Roll, and choose the image. Enjoy the wallpaper and make sure you join us for our live live event commentary at imore.com/live starting off just before 10am PT/1pm ET. And here's the previous version: |

Apple Events channel added to Apple TV, will live stream iPad mini keynote Posted: 23 Oct 2012 03:56 AM PDT Apple overnight has pushed out a new "Apple Events" channel to the Apple TV. The new channel, which is accessible via an icon on the Apple TV Home screen that looks a lot like today's iPad mini event invitation, allows access to not only previous Apple keynotes, but will also allow Apple TV owners to watch today's iPad and Mac event live. So far there's no indication Apple will stream the event to other devices, iOS or Mac. If that remains the case, focusing on the Apple TV is interesting. While it might prompt a few mad dashes to the store from people who haven't yet bought the $99 iTunes living room box, it also will greatly constrain the number of people who can potentially watch live. iOS devices have sold in the hundreds of millions. Apple TVs... nowhere nearly as much. Live streaming is expensive and troublesome to scale, and Apple events tend to be among the biggest on the internet, so it would give Apple a much smaller, easier target to serve. The last time Apple offered a live stream was way back in 2010. We'll keep our eyes open for additional streaming options, but in the meantime, anyone rushing out for an Apple TV? Update: You can watch via iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Mac as well as well. |
Everything Everywhere finally reveals its LTE pricing, offers just 8GB maximum data allowance Posted: 23 Oct 2012 12:17 AM PDT UK network Everything Everywhere has finally revealed its pricing structure for its LTE data service which starts on October 30th. Everything Everywhere has a UK exclusive on LTE for the foreseeable future and to be fair that is reflected in the costs of the plans. EE will launch with three plans to choose from and each will include unlimited telephone calls and text messages, the only difference will be the amount of data allowed in each package. EE has a total of five different data allowance packages starting from 500MB right up to 8GB. With prices starting at £36 per month right up to £56 per month for the 8GB allowance. They are all subject to a 24 month agreement. 500MB £36, 1GB £41, 3GB £46, 5GB £48, 8GB £56. Each plan includes the use of VoIP and tethering at no extra cost. According to Pocket-lint, EE will also offer subsidized iPhone 5 pricing when it launches next week; so you could pick up a 16GB model on the cheapest tariff for £179.99. If you decide to go for the 64GB model that figure would rise to a whopping £379.99. There are of course many different offers in between depending on which handset and plan that you choose; all of the details have not been revealed as of yet. If you are in the UK, what do you think of the LTE pricing from Everything Everywhere? Personally I will be sticking with my "All You Can Eat" data from Three UK as it offers true unlimited data at much better prices than Everything Everywhere are offering; I can live without the high speeds for now.
