Cinemassacre Videos for iPad review

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 04:29 PM PDT

I'm a huge retro console and arcade video gaming fan. There are a plethora of sites that cover that material, but one of my favorites is Cinemassacre, and the Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) in particular. AVGN is a saucy, foul mouthed, brilliant reviewer, whose material is always well researched and presented. However, going to the Cinemassacre website would often result in errors for me on my iPad. The videos just wouldn't play right or would disappear completely after the page finished loading. I don't know if I should blame Cinemassacre, Apple, or Adobe for this, or if there's enough blamecake to go around,

Imagine my surprise and delight when I saw Cinemassacre had a videos app available on the App Store, and that it provided universal binary support for the iPad. It was a paid app, which was also a surprise, but I figured there must be some premium content or special features in there commensurate with the $1.99 price tag.

Long story short, there wasn't.

Watch the video above for the fuller, more frustrated version, but suffice it to say I wasn't impressed. The Cinemassacre Videos app was as basic as they come. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a template generated app that just pulls a video feed and populates a table view. That's bad but not terrible on a small iPhone screen, but is terrible on the big iPad screen. It looks like the stretched out smartphone apps found on early Android tablets that Apple made fun of. Seriously. There's a reason Apple didn't just make bigger list views on iPad but made YouTube and Videos look totally different. Cinemassacre Videos is the opposite of that.

Even the table views are filled with repetitive thumbnails, making it hard to get any glance-able information. It just comes off as sloppy, which is a real shame given how great the Cinemassacre website and the actual videos are. (I only noticed later that, unlike the iPhone interface, there are no actual screenshots shown for the iPad version in the App Store -- only one, lonely splash screen.)

There's also no premium content that I could find, or extra features (besides the videos not disappearing) to recommend the app and it's $1.99 price tag over the free website. In fact, presentation wise, the free Cinemassacre website spanks the Cinemassacre Videos. Maybe the lack of ads in the app compared to the website will appeal to some, but not for me, not in this case.

Once again, the video content of Cinemassacre and of AVGN's reviews remain stellar. Somewhere, there's a great Cinemassacre app, one worthy of the site, waiting to be made. This isn't it.

I'd recommend Cinemassacre.com to any retro gaming nerd. But skip this app and stick to the website. Rather than adding to Cinemassacre and AVGN experience, it only detracts from it.

Mortgage Calculator by Quicken Loans for iPhone review

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 04:24 PM PDT

In the market to buy a house? Mortgage Calculator by Quicken Loans is an iPhone app that includes a purchase payment calculator, a refinance payment calculator, an interest rate calculator, a loan amount calculator, and a mortgage term calculator to help assist you during your stressful hunt.

The purchase payment calculator lets you enter a purchase price, down payment amount, interest rate, term, , and annual taxes and insurance, and calculates the monthly payment.

The refinance payment calculator will calculate your monthly payment given the loan amount, interest rate, term, and annual taxes and insurance.

The interest rate calculator will determine what interest rate you need to get the monthly payment you want on the loan amount and term length you desire.

The loan amount calculator will calculate the value of the loan you can afford given an interest rate, term, and the monthly payment you can afford.

With the mortgage term calculator, you can enter in the loan amount, interest rate, and monthly payment to determine what term length you should choose.

If you make a calculation you want to save, like the one that calculates the monthly payments of that house you really have your eye on, you can save it as a favorite, give it an icon, and even save a photo to it so you remember which house the calculation is associated with.

Remember, this is an app by Quicken Loans, so there is of course a little advertising for the company that includes their current rates and a method of contacting them. This doesn't bother me, though. The calculators are very helpful and it's also nice to at least have an idea of why kind of rates are currently available.

The good

  • Five different calculators: purchase payment, refinance payment, interest rate, loan amount, mortgage term
  • Easy to use
  • Save favorite
  • See current interest rates for Quicken Loans

The bad

  • No complaints

The conclusion

Mortgage Calculator by Quicken Loans is a fantastic app for those shopping for their next home. Personally, I'm not quite yet in the market to purchase a house, but I'm in the dreaming stage and I have been using Mortgage Calculator to determine how big of a loan my husband and I could afford as well as quickly calculate what our house payment would be if we purchased one of the specific homes that are for sale in my area.

Have Batman rise on your iPhone and iPad before the Dark Knight Rises in theaters!

Have Batman rise on your iPhone and iPad before the Dark Knight Rises in theaters!

The Dark Knight Rises will complete Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale's widely acclaimed Batman trilogy, but before it rises in theaters, you can get can it on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Want to battle Bane and coral Catwoman? Here are your games, books, comics, wallpapers, and more!

iPhone and iPad games

Have Batman rise on your iPhone and iPad before the Dark Knight Rises in theaters!

Gameloft is king of the movie licenses, and with the official Dark Knight Rises game for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad they won't be giving up the title any time soon. Play as Batman through dozens of adventures and random events, rescue hostages, help out bomb squads, hunt down jailbreakers (no, not that kind, and own the streets of Gotham. It's got that Gameloft fighting system, with tons of moves and effects, and you can unlock upgrades as you go.

There's nothing wrong with Bane that the Batman can't fix with his fist, so hit the link below and get your game on.

Note: Dark Knight Rises for iOS is in the process of going live in the App Store right now, and may not be available in all countries yet. As always, Australia and New Zealand will get it first, with other countries to follow as the day goes on. If it's not available in your regional App Store yet, check back later in the day!

Books

The Batman is second only to Superman in major, mainstream detective comic longevity. Created by Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger in 1939 and re-invented in full Dark Knight form by Frank Miller in the 1980s, he's one of the most popular DC superheroes, and not coincidentally one of the most human.

There have been a ton of incredible Batman stories over the years, by an incredible range of creators. Sadly, there's not much available in iBooks yet (bad DC!) but you can get some of them, including more recent sorks, via the Comics app, or dedicated DC Comics app in the App Store. The app itself is free, and there are free comics available, but most need to be purchased separately within the app.

You can also pick up a lot of the collected print editions from Amazon.

Movies

Christopher Nolan isn't the first director to bring the Batman to film. Tim Burton and... other, lesser director, had a turn over a decade ago, and there have been a ton of truly fantastic animated TV shows and movies over the years since. (Seriously, some of the animated films and shows are far, far better than the live action movies.)

Wallpapers

If you want the Batman on your iPad or iPhone, or if Bane or Catwoman are more your thing, we have your Retina Dark Knight Rises wallpapers ready and waiting for you in the iMore forums.

When you grab your wallpaper, be sure to tell us which one you took! And once you've seen The Dark Knight Rises, drop your review in our official iMore Dark Knight Rises review thread!

International readers, here's how to set up and use iTunes Movies in the Cloud

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 01:23 PM PDT

How to re-download movies, music, and tv shows on your iPhone iPad or iPod touch

Apple has just unleashed iTunes Movies in the Cloud internationally, including the U.K., Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, and parts of Latin American, Asia Pacific, and Europe. If you just got iTunes Movies in the Cloud in your country, you can now re-download many -- but not all -- your iTunes Store movie purchases on iTunes on Mac or Windows, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple TV. Here's how!

How to re-download iTunes music, movies, & TV shows with iCloud

Re-downloading movies is a little more complicated than re-downloading apps simply because licensing restrictions don't allow it in all areas (yet). Here's a current listing of where iTunes in the Cloud movies are available for re-downloading.

  1. Launch the iTunes app.
  2. Tap on the Purchased tab along the bottom of the navigation menu. Re-download previously purchased tv shows, music, and movies via the iTunes app on your iphone ipad and ipod touch
  3. Tap the View button at the top left to choose between movies, music, or TV shows (options vary by region, not all may be present).
  4. Tap Not on this iPhone/iPod/iPad.
  5. Scroll through the list to find the content you're looking for.Re-download music movies and tv shows on your iPhone iPad and iPod touch with the itunes apps
  6. Tap on the iCloud download button to re-download the content to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.
  7. Enter your iTunes password, if requested, to confirm.

Your content will download to your Video app.

And that's it! Now you don't have to worry -- at least not as much! -- about iTunes movies filling up all your disk or device space, or losing your movie files if they don't backup. Just tap, download, and watch.

Have a gadget that's extremely rare and perhaps an antique? Show it off! Have too many gadgets to count and are possible a little embarrassed to admit how man you have? We want to see them all! And as always, get creative!

(The above image is of my original iPhone and one of its many battle wounds. Taken with an iPhone 4S and olloclip macro lens.)

The prize: Glif tripod mount and stand!

In addition to a thumbs up from the iMore crew and all of us yelling about how great of a photo star you are, the winner of this week's photography contest will receive a Glif tripod mount and stand!

The rules

The rules of entry are very simple. The photo must have been taken with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (we'll check the EXIF data of the original file to verify) and any edits must have been done with an iPhone or iPad app. No Photoshop CS6! If you have external lens accessories you are more than welcome to use them. You can submit as many photos as you'd like, but remember, this is a contest, so make sure you submit your best work!

Resources

Now, before you run off to take your photo, remember that it's not technical skill alone that will claim this prize. Even if you're not the best photographer (yet!), a great eye and a great subject can still get you the win. However, a little help can never hurt, so make sure you check out these articles from our iPhone photography series for some tips.

How to submit

Submitting your photos is easy. just head over to the iMore Photography Forum and post your photos to the official contest thread. Don't forget to state which apps, if any, you used to edit your photo!

That's it! Now go out and shoot!

Apple unleashes iTunes Movies in the Cloud internationally, iTunes Match in Hungary, Polland

Apple unleashes iTunes Movies in the Cloud internationally, iTunes Match in Hungary, Polland

Apple began a wide-scale, rapid international rollout of the previously U.S.-only iTunes Movies in the Cloud feature. The service, which lets you re-download previously purchased iTunes Movies on iTunes, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV is now live in UK, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, various Latin American markets, Asia Pacific markets and some parts of Europe. The news comes from a report by MacRumors., who noted:

We've heard from several UK users who have reported that only a small fraction of their purchased movies are currently shown as eligible for re-download, through iTunes in the Cloud, but Apple indicates that "most" content should be included in the program.

iTunes in the Cloud, which also covers music, TV shows, iBooks, and apps has led a bit of a fragmented life with around fifty countries only having access to the music and music video parts of the service. TV show access was initially available in the United States then the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia got in on the action. If you want to know how to set up and use iTunes in the Cloud, we have you covered.

In related news, iTunes Match music storage and download service is now live two more European countries this morning; Hungary and Poland now have access to the service. If you just got the service, here's how to set up iTunes Match.

If you see iTunes in the Cloud Movies or iTunes Match popping up in your country, make sure you let us know in the comments.

How to easily share pictures with your family, from your iPhone to your TV, using iCloud and Photo Stream

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 12:05 PM PDT

Ultimate guide to Photo Stream

If you've been out for the evening, shooting photos of the kid's big game, or away at Disney for a week, snapping pics at every ride, wouldn't it be great if you could get home, collapse on the couch, and enjoy the memories almost instantly on your big screen TV? Well, with iCloud's Photo Stream feature and an Apple TV, you can!

Here's how...

What's Photo Stream?

Photo Stream keeps track of all the photos (not videos though) you take on your iPhone, or other iOS devices. Then, whenever you're on Wi-Fi, Photo Stream uploads a copy to iCloud, Apple's cloud storage network, and then pushed a copy of the photo back down to all your iOS devices -- including an Apple TV hooked up to your big screen HDTV!

Photo Stream will store store up to 1000 photos, or 30 days of photos. On your Mac and/or Windows PC, iCloud will store all your photos.

How to take great photos with your iPhone

If you've never taken photos before with your iPhone, it's easy to get started. Here's a a quick video and complete step-by-step tutorial to get your going.

Once you've mastered the basics, we have more tutorials to help you with everything from portraits to kids to pets to macros to basic photography skills like composition. Check them out.

How to enable Photo Stream on your iPhone

Once you know how to shoot, you need to make sure all the great photos you take get stored up on iCloud and in Photo Stream.

  1. Launch the Settings app.
  2. Tap on iCloud.
  3. Tap on Photo Stream.
  4. Toggle Photo Stream to On.

Photos are only transferred from your iPhone to iCloud when you're on Wi-Fi. If you're out traveling, hotels, coffee shop, and other convenient locations might have Wi-Fi hotspots available so you can even share pictures before you get back home.

How to enable Photo Stream on your Apple TV

Now that your iPhone is shooting and storing everything you shoot, you need to enable Photo Stream on your Apple TV.

  1. Launch Photo Stream (the icon is towards the bottom). How to access Photo Stream from your Apple TV menu
  2. Confirm your Apple ID or sign in with a different one. How to set Photo Stream as your screen saver on your Apple TV
  3. Choose whether or not you'd like to use Photo Stream as your screen saver.

iCloud will start to populate your Photo Stream on your Apple TV. Depending on the size of your Photo Stream and the speed of your internet connection, it might take a few minutes.

How to get more help with iCloud

That's it! Now every photo you take and memory you make will be automagically transferred to your iCloud and Photo Stream, and readily available on your Apple TV.

Note: Since with great power comes great responsibility, make sure you either turn Photo Stream off, or delete any photos from the Photo Stream folder, that you don't want shared with the whole family.

If you still need help with setting up or using Photo Stream on your iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Windows or Mac PC, or any other iCloud feature, head on over to our iCloud Forum and ask away!

Verizon announces Q2 2012 financial results, 2.7 million iPhones sold

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 08:07 AM PDT

Verizon announces Q2 2012 financial results, 2.7 million iPhones sold

Verizon has reported their Q2 2012 financial results, and the iPhone accounted for 2.7 million, or roughly 45% of the 5.9 million smartphones Verizon sold. Operating revenues were $28.6 billion, up 3.7% year over year, and wireless service revenues were $15.8 billion, up 7.3% year over year. Verizon chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam said:

Verizon delivered another strong quarter of earnings growth and cash generation, and we remain on track to meet our financial objectives and produce solid double-digit earnings growth for the year. Verizon Wireless has once again demonstrated its industry leadership, combining strong revenue growth with record margins and high customer loyalty. We reported sequential improvement in second-quarter Wireline margins, and we expect to see that improving trend carry through the second half of the year. We also look forward to the closing of strategic transactions and to the integration of process improvements that will set the stage for continued long-term profitable growth across all our business units.

The iPhone remains a huge success for Verizon. Even though both absolute number of units sold, and percentage of smartphones the iPhone accounted for, were down, it's more than halfway through the iPhone 4S product cycle. Given that the 2011 iPhone 4S doesn't have LTE, which is Verizon's clear focus right now, and the focus of many competing handsets, and given Verizon's CDMA network is nowhere near as fast as it is reliable, the iPhone is once again exhibiting remarkable longevity.

Of the remainder of smartphones sold, Verizon said some 2.9 million, were "Droids", but that seems like it must certainly refer to Android phones in general, and not Droid-branded phones in specific, given the popularity of the Samsung and other non-Droid branded lines.

It's interesting that 45% of smartphone buyers on Verizon are opting for a 8 month old iPhone 4S or 24 month old iPhone 4 over far more modern, bigger screened, Android handsets, and that very few are opting for what little BlackBerry and Windows Phone handsets Verizon currently offers.

The expected iPhone 5 launch in October and holiday quarter should, like last year, be much, much stronger for Verizon. During the conference call, they alluded to something special coming round about then, but given the launch of Windows Phone 8, and perhaps new Android, it's pointless to intuit too much into vague statements like those.

Press release, conference call audio, presentation slides, and more are available via the link below.

U.K. courts order Apple to state Samsung didn't copy iPad

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 07:22 AM PDT

U.K. courts order Apple to state Samsung didn't copy iPad

The U.K. courts -- the same ones which purportedly ruled recently that Samsung's Galaxy Tab didn't copy the iPad because "it wasn't cool enough" -- have now ruled that Apple must publicly alert the British people of that judgement. Bloomberg reports:

As well as Apple's website, the company must pay for notices in the Financial Times, the Daily Mail, Guardian Mobile magazine, and T3, according to a draft copy of the order provided by Samsung's lawyers.

Apple, who doesn't even like to refer to competitors unless they're anthropomorphized in TV commercials, shown off as being equal attenuated on websites, or lacking tablet apps but not calcium content in keynotes, is already appealing the July 9 order.

If Apple succeeds on appeal, it will no doubt be onward and upward to the next round of patent litigation. If it fails, it will be interesting to see how Apple will comply with the order. Will it be the barest, blandest, legalese possible? Will it be as passive aggressive as possible? Or could they find a way to turn even an apology into a tactical advantage?

Apple and Samsung have been waging global thermonuclear patent war since Apple went on first-strike offensive in April 2011, saying:

Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple's technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products.

It's been up and down, back and forth since then. Complicating thing further, Apple remains Samsung's single largest manufacturing partner, with Samsung supplying key parts of the technology they're simultaneously accused of copying. Despite ongoing talks between Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung CEO Choi Gee-Sung, no resolution has been found, and court cases continue.

We discussed a lot of this in detail on the iMore show last night, including whether similar looking products make technology as a whole more accessible to mainstream users. (When's the last time you saw a refrigerator trade-dress suit?) I also poked more than a little fun at the situation on yesterday's iMore today...

If, ultimately, Apple has to apologize for calling Samsung a copyist on page 3 of some U.K. papers, well that's the price that sometimes has to be paid when playing high stakes patent poker.

Barring success in appeal, any suggestions for Apple on how they should apologize? Head on over to the comments on the YouTube video above and give us your funniest, wittiest, more creative Apple apology and you'll automagically be entered to win a $50 iTunes gift certificate -- because sometimes consumers deserve to be the ones that win.

iMore store update: Now shipping iPhone and iPad accessories to more countries around the world for less than ever!

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 11:45 PM PDT

iMore store update: Now shipping iPhone and iPad accessories to more countries around the world for less than ever!

Up until now, ordering from the iMore store, if you live outside the U.S., has been a big bag of hurt. Many times shipping, customs brokerage, tax on shipping and brokerage, and tax on tax (?!) has worked out to an anger-inducing amount.

The answer is couriers and countries want to get paid. We've worked hard to get around this by opening Canadian stores, like Blueshop.ca but now we're taking things not just a step, but a giant leap further.

The iMore store helps support iMore, and helps us bring you great content, day in, day out. When you support the iMore store, you're supporting iMore and our content. That international readers couldn't express that support, frankly, sucked. But not any more!

Starting today, the iMore store -- and all the Mobile Nations stores -- are offering better, cheaper support for international customers -- and are also rolling out free shipping to AFP/FPO destinations around the globe!

It's been a long time coming, but here it is:

More global shipping options

The iMore store is going truly global and now supports 30 countries world wide!

Cheaper shipping options

Previously, the only way the iMore store could ship internationally was with UPS Express, which was fast but hella expensive, especially if you were only ordering one, inexpensive accessory. Nw the iMore store offers three levels of USPS shipping and two levels of UPS shipping, which provide more options, and cheaper options!

International shipping starts with USPS Internal First Class mail, which takes 1 - 2 weeks (note, no package tracking is currently available on orders less than $100). The second USPS option is Priority Mail, which takes 6 - 10 days. The fastest USPS option is Express Mail, which will get you your order in 3 - 5 days.

UPS shipping is also available. UPS Worldwide Expediated has a 3 - 5 day shipping tme, while Worldwide Express/Saver is at 3 days.

A Note on Shipping Lithium Ion Batteries using USPS for shipping: Here's the bad news. Due to current Postal Regulations the iMore store is unable to ship items overseas via USPS containing Lithium Batteries at this time. It sounds like this rule may change in the not so distant future to allow for smaller items that contain lithium, but in the meantime these products are off the table unless you go of UPS shipping.

Example Rates

Here's a few examples to put the savings and options into perspective:

  • Australia / Japan: First Class $11.95, Priority $32.95, Express $38.95
  • UK: First Class $11.95, Priority $36.95, Express $40.95
  • France / Germany: First Class $11.95, Priority $30.95, Express $38.95
  • Mexico: First Class $9.95, Priority $27.95, Express $36.95
  • US Territories, including Puerto Rico and Guam: Just $5.95 Priority Mail or free shipping if your order is greater than $50 !

United States APO/FPO FREE SHIPPING!

The iMore store now offers FREE Priority Mail shipping to all US Army Post Office and Fleet Post Office destinations around the globe!

New for US Customers - $3.95 Budget Saver

Along with all the new shipping options for international customers the iMore store also recently introduced a new $3.95 Budget Saver shipping option, available on most orders, for those in the continental US. This is shipped via First Class Mail with a tracking code. This a great option for those looking to buy just one or two items. Remember - there's still free shipping within the continental US on orders over $50.

##Let the International Shipping Begin!

There you have it. FINALLY better international shipping options from the iMore store. Spread the word! Give us your feedback. The Mobile Nations e-commerce teams are always working to get better and better, and that's what they'll continue to do.

Your iPhone or iPad accessories purchases, now or in the future, help ensure we can bring you the very best coverage in mobile, and we and the iMore store really appreciate your support. And we really appreciate your helping us spread the word, and letting your friends and family in the U.S. and around the world know that the iMore store is now offering affordable shipping to more places than any before!

Take me to the iMore store and let the International Shipping Begin

Poll: Will you be switching to a shared plan on AT&T or Verizon?

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 11:05 PM PDT

AT&T has announced their shared plans and like Verizon before them, you'll need a masters degree in applied arithmetic to figure them out -- or just be smart enough to cheat off our own Leanna Lofte who did all the heavy counting and showed you which is better between AT&T and Verizon and by how much! Of course, you'll still have to figure out if a shared plan is cheaper than your existing individual plan...

But once you crunch those numbers, we want to know what you've figured out? Will you be switching to a shared plan on AT&T? A shared plan on Verizon? If so, how many iPhones will you be paying to put on it? How many iPads? Anything else?

Or are you waiting for something, like maybe the iPhone 5 or iPad mini before you make up your mind?

Or maybe you just think there's something fishy about shared plans in general, and that bits should be bits, and you want not part of them?

One hour! But, one camera angle. It was after the iMore show stopped taping and I'm way past tired, but wanted to get the contest up, and break out my Chris Oldroyd-unnapproved British accent.

Fieldrunners 2

For fans of the original Fieldrunners game, the wait for Fieldrunners 2 likely has felt like an eternity. Now though, that wait is over as Subatomic Studios has released Fieldrunners 2 for iPhone into the iOS App Store. Bringing along the same strategic-action-puzzle-defense gameplay from the first game, Fieldrunners 2 has 20 new levels as well as 20 new weapons to choose from that will help keep you busy trying to defend the world. Other key features of the game include:

  • Pint sized invaders seeking revenge!
  • Hours of action across a huge world stuffed with levels!
  • 20 unique, upgradable weapons for stopping the enemies in style!
  • Retina display support makes hyper detailed hand painted artwork shine!
  • Air strikes, mines, and powerful items let you attack with the precision of a surgeon!
  • Sudden Death, Time Trial, and Puzzle type levels put a fresh spin on tower defense!
  • Trenches, bridges, and tunnels make strategic choices more important than ever!
  • Customizable loadouts so you can pick the perfect weapons for each battle!
  • Revolutionary AI lets the fieldrunners move with stunning realism!
  • Elite enemy types bring new challenges to the battlefield!
  • A tower that launches bee hives!

Of course, you'll need to develop a strategy in order to stop the invasion but considering you've had years to prepare for this, it shouldn't be all that difficult. We'll be giving Fieldrunners 2 a full review over the next few days but for now, you head on into the iOS App Store and grab the download right now and give it a go for yourself. And by all means, feel free to let us know in the comments what you think of this long-awaited sequel.
