Welcome to iMore 2.0

Leave a comment below telling us what new features you want to see in iMore 2.0, and be entered to win a $600 Apple Store gift certificate for the iOS 6 device of your dreams!

At the beginning of the year we changed the name of our community to iMore.com. Since then we have been working incredibly hard to improve the quality and experience of iMore as well. We've invested heavily in having not only great content, but compellingly beautiful content with the best photography and videography we can produce.

We've continuously expanded and improved our podcasting, bringing you the best and brightest hosts and guests on the internet, for shows like iMore, Iterate, ZEN and TECH, and Mobile Nations. We've given the iMore forums a major makeover as well, so they're cleaner and easier to use than ever before. We've released a free iMore for iPhone app that's been downloaded tens of thousands of times.

And there's much more of all of that to come. For even longer now, however, we've been working on something else, something far more important -- a new, more powerful, more flexible platform to drive it all.

And today we made the jump.

Everything has been moved over. Every bit of legacy code from Phone different (Movable Type), the iPhone blog and TiPb (Wordpress) has been end of lined, and everything we've learned from CrackBerry.com and Android Central has been put to use. I'm calling it VISOR (it's Drupal-based, but VISOR better fits our roots and our spirit.)

Our singular goal is to give the iMore community the absolute best experience imaginable on the web and in mobile. Moving to VISOR will let us do that, and in ways that were impossible on our old platform.

This is the new iMore architecture, and the new architecture for a cleaner, better Mobile Nations.

Like any new architecture, we've started with the foundation. Some of the new features are already in place -- you can now toggle between blog view and headline view, and you browse the latest forum discussions right from the home page. More features will be coming soon.

In other words, this is our Snow Leopard.

With any substantial change, there will be a tiny little bit of pain – you'll need to create an iMore account to comment on the posts. The good news:

  • It will greatly reduce the amount of spam we've all been putting up with

And best of all:

  • If you already have an iMore forums account, you're good to go. Just use that.
  • If you already have an account at Android Central, CrackBerry, webOSNation, or WPCentral, you can use the same username, email address, and password to create your iMore account.

The reason for the latter is one of the features we have coming your way -- a unified login across all Mobile Nations community. One account to rule them all.

We recognize creating an account can be a hassle, and while it will give you a ton of great benefits now and in the future, we want to make up for it immediately as well.

You know that iOS 6 dream device contest -- that $600 Apple gift certificate we're giving away to celebrate the iMore show #300?

Well, we're giving away two of them now.

Simply sign in an leave a single comment below telling us what features you'd love to see in the all new iMore, and you're entered to win.

We'll announce both winners next Wednesday, July 11, live on the iMore Show #302.

I want to thank our community and our millions of readers, listeners, and viewers. I want to thank our tech team, including our founder, Marcus Adolfsson, our dear leader, Kevin Michaluk, Tom for the bits and David and Jose for the grids and the pixels, and all of our editors, writers, and network and community staff for everything they've done to get us here.

Like I said last time, we're still only just beginning.

Welcome to iMore 2.0.

Apple pulls malicious App Store app that took contacts, sent spam

Posted: 05 Jul 2012 12:47 PM PDT

Apple has removed a malicious app from the App Store that took the user's contacts and used them to send spam. Kaspersky Lab Expert Denis originally reported on the app, Find and Call, for Securelist, based on information from Russian carrier MegaFon.

[MegaFon] notified us about a suspicious application, which was found in both the Apple App Store and Google Play. [...] [Our] analysis of the iOS and Android versions of the same application showed that it's not an SMS worm but a Trojan that uploads a user's phonebook to remote server. The 'replication' part is done by the server - SMS spam messages with the URL to the application are being sent from the remote server to all the contacts in the user's address book.

You can read Apple's statement over on The Loop.

In response to previous incidents of unauthorized transfers, iOS 6 will apparently ask for express permission before granting access to Contacts, the same way current and previous versions of iOS ask for permission to use location. However, that won't protect against apps that, rather than attacking the code of the system, attack the trust and naiveté of the user.

In other words -- apps that deliberately try to deceive users into doing things are very difficult for any system to protect against. Just like people can get conned out of money or property in real life, they can get conned out of data in the digital world. "Enter your password for free porn" is never a good idea on any platform.

The only way to protect against these kinds of human engineering attacks is to be careful what data you allow apps to use. Default to saying "no" unless there's a compelling reason to say "yes".

As iOS gets more popular, these kinds of human engineering attacks will become more and more common. Apple will no doubt remove malicious apps as they appear, and they need to always improve speed of detection and removal, but ultimately we're all responsible for our own safety.

Google Drive vs. Dropbox vs. SkyDrive redux

How does Google Drive stack up against other cloud storage services?

Now that Google has released an official Google Drive for iOS app, I figured it was a good idea to update our cloud storage head-to-head to get an even better idea of how the new, improved Google Drive stacks up against both Dropbox and SkyDrive.

When Google Drive launched there was no iOS app, and to access your information you had to use mobile Safari. Does the native Google Drive app make a big difference? Does its lack of upload capabilities make any differences negligible?

I you're still debating which service is better for you, head on over to our updated Google Drive vs. Dropbox vs. SkyDrive and check it out.

Turn your iPhone into a two-player games console with GameDock, now seeking Kickstarter funding

Turn your iPhone into a two-player games console with GameDock, now seeking Kickstarter funding

GameDock is the latest innovative project to arrive on Kickstarter and it looks like a really interesting proposition. Aimed squarely at the retro gamers amongst us, it looks to provide an interface between your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and your HDTV as well as giving you two handheld controllers to improve any gaming experience.

Have you ever played a great retro game on your iPhone, only to be frustrated with the touch controls? Or have you wanted to play an awesome iPad game with a friend, but two people holding one tablet just doesn't feel right? With the GameDock for iOS you can play classic games the way they were meant to be played: with two controllers and a TV. Just plug the dock into your TV like a video game console and your iOS device into the dock like a game cartridge. The GameDock is designed to be compatible with existing iCade games and for dock-ready games that include two-player support and full 1080p HDTV output.

The GameDock will work with any game that currently works with the iCade system; as long as it only requires two action buttons and two menu buttons. There is also a custom dashboard app to enable you to easily find and select compatible games. If you like the look of the GameDock, you can back it on Kickstarter from $100 and be one of the first to get one.

I can't help thinking that Apple really needs to be the one to make a game controller and standardize the format for all developers. If they do, then you will see most developers adding support for it with their games. Until then however, I just don't see there being enough support for these type of third party controllers

Weekly Photo Contest: Cars!

Posted: 05 Jul 2012 01:07 AM PDT

It's time to announce this week's photo contest -- and the winner of our pet photography contest. Before I do, I want to congratulate everyone on their awesome entries. We've got some talented iPhoneographer readers here at iMore and it wasn't an easy decision!

And the winning entry is...

...this adorable pet portrait of bulldogs Loki and Eleanor P. Wigglesbottom by Buzzerfly68! I love how Loki and Eleanor are out in nature and perfectly and symmetrically posed. Buzzerfly68 also did an awesome job of getting down to the level of his bulldogs to create an interesting point of view. Great work Buzzerfly68, Loki, and Eleanor!

Buzzerfly68 took this photo with an iPhone 4S and edited it with Snapseed.

This week's contest: Cars!

With the end of one photo contest, comes the beginning of new one, and this week's focus is on cars! Many people treasure their cars almost as much as their kids and are always looking for an excuse to show off photos of them -- well now you have the perfect excuse! To clarify, when we say "cars", we actually mean vehicles, so please share your favorite photos of your cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, scooters, go-carts, or whatever you've got that's sporting a motor! As always, creativity will give you an edge, so take your car out to a nice location and get some quality "portraits" of your ride or get up close and show us some detail that you love. We're not picky -- as long as your photo is somehow related to a motor vehicle, we want to see it!

The prize: Oloclip Lens System

olloclip lens system

In addition to a thumbs up from the iMore crew and all of us yelling about how great of a photo star you are, the winner of this week's photography contest will receive an Olloclip Lens System!

The rules

The rules of entry are very simple. The photo must have been taken with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (we'll check the EXIF data of the original file to verify) and any edits must have been done with an iPhone or iPad app. No Photoshop CS6! If you have external lens accessories you are more than welcome to use them. You can submit as many photos as you'd like, but remember, this is a contest, so make sure you submit your best work!

Resources

Now, before you run off to take your photos, remember that it's not technical skill alone that will claim this prize. Even if you're not the best photographer (yet!), a great eye and a great subject can still get you the win. However, a little help can never hurt, so make sure you check out these articles from our iPhone photography series for some tips.

How to submit

Submitting your photos is easy. Just head over to the iMore Photography Forum and post your photos to the official contest thread. Don't forget to state which apps, if any, you used to edit your photo!

That's it! Now go out and shoot!

Octopus Keyboard brings BlackBerry 10's predictive keyboard to iPhone [jailbreak]

Octopus Keyboard brings BlackBerry 10's predictive keyboard to iOS devices

A new jailbreak tweak called Octopus Keyboard can bring BlackBerry 10's new predictive keyboard to your iPhone right now. Once installed your keyboard will present you with frequently used words based on what you're currently typing.

The idea behind RIM's new predictive text solution is that, after starting to type a sentence or phrase, you can swipe on the keyboard to auto-complete words. As you type, the keyboard should, in theory, get smarter and learn common phrases and words you type often. You'll notice that words on the keyboard will change as you type them. For example, if you're typing the word "frequently" it may pick it up after a keystroke or two. Just swipe up where it appears above the key and it will accept it. If it doesn't guess the word just keep typing and no auto-suggestions will be used.

This type of keyboard solution may be a great compromise between Swype keyboard technology and basic auto-correction which is what already exists in iOS devices. You don't end up accepting incorrect words by accident and don't have an extra row of data to deal with the way you typically do with Swype devices. BlackBerry's solution doesn't add anything additional to the keyboard but uses space where your fingers already are which minimizes the amount of taps and swipes you have to use.

You can hit the link below to see a demo of BlackBerry 10's new keyboard in action. While BlackBerry users will have to wait until BlackBerry 10, iOS users can check it out now for $4.99. You'll need to install the following repository within Cydia first and then you should be able to search for Octopus Keyboard.

http://k3a.me/c/

Is this something you'd use on your iPhone regularly or do you think the current auto-correction system is good enough?

Newly installed and updated apps reportedly crashing on launch due to corrupt App Store binary bug

Corrupt App Store downloads reportedly causing crashes-on-launch for iPhone, iPad users

If you've downloaded or updated an app from the iPhone or iPad App Store in the last day or so, and it's crashing every time you launch it, you might have gotten a bad binary from Apple. At least that's what Instapaper developer Marco Arment began trouble-shooting last night on Twitter, and has now posted in detail about on Marco.org.

At first blush, it sounds like Apple has corrupted copies of app update files on their content distribution network. Whatever the cause, if you're experiencing the problem, try deleting it and installing it again. If the problem persists, wait a while and try again later -- wait a day if you have to.

Needless to say, this has also resulted in a slew of bad reviews for Instapaper and other afflicted apps. It's important to stress -- this isn't the developer's fault, this appears to be a problem on Apple's end in the App Store system. Developers are victims here. If you left a bad review, please consider going back and amending it. If you haven't reviewed Instapaper or any of the afflicted apps in a while, and you like them, consider giving them a review right now to help make up for the deluge of misdirected negative reviews they're suffering from at the moment.

Update 1: The Early Edition 2 is also getting caught and have posted a warning on GlasshouseApps.com advising users not to update until Apple resolves the issue.

Update 2: GoodReader seems to be experiencing the same App Store issue and they've put up a tech support article GoodReader.net explaining how to make sure you don't lose any GoodReader files or data.

Update 3: Based on some screenshots sent our way, it looks like FairPlay, Apple's DRM (digital rights management) wrapper, might have been improperl

If you're a developer and you want to avoid experiencing the problem yourself, or if you simply want more information on what Arment has managed to piece together, hit the link below.

  1. maneesh Said,

Gotocamera has a user friendly and FREE surveillance/video monitoring app for BlackBerry. One can use the service to watch over pets, children, elders, etc., when you're compelled to leave them alone at home or with a nanny. This service can also be used to monitor small businesses. The process of getting started is very simple. All you need to do is set up a GotoCamera Account www.gotocamera.com (also free) to use this app. Just follow the simple instructions on the sign-up page and you're good to get started. The idea behind this app is to assist to make communities safer, and give home owners peace of mind when they’re capable of remotely monitoring their home and loved ones.
