Member of Apple's board of directors uses a BlackBerry -- so what? Posted: 28 May 2012 12:45 PM PDT Millard Drexler is the CEO of J.Crew and sits on Apple's Board of Directors and committees for compensation, nominating, and corporate governance. During a recent interview about his operations with the clothing retailer, some sharp-eyed smartphone ehtusiasts noticed that he was using a BlackBerry Bold 9900, not an iPhone, as one might expect from someone working with Apple at levels that high. To be fair, Apple also had Eric Schmidt on their board of directors for a long time, and Schmidt was an Lately, RIM has been touting themselves as a phone for "doers" rather than iSheep, which is why Drexler is getting attention; any successful businessman toting a BlackBerry is a poster boy for the campaign, and the fact that this one just so happens to work with Apple is icing on the cake for CrackBerry fans. Really though, the "doer" campaign's snobbishness is just shooting RIM in the foot, as BlackBerry needs to be roping in any and every willing pair of thumbs whether or not they identify themselves as hyper-productive git-'er-done types. But hey, that's cool RIM, you can take that 1% of the market consisting of high-paid execs like Drexler that think it has to have a BlackBerry, while Android and iOS take up the rest. What do you guys think - should Drexler be eating his own dogfood and use an iPhone, or does it not necessarily send a bad message that he's using a competing smartphone? He's not a hugely visible public figure at Apple, so it sure doesn't bother me much. Besides, who's to say he doesn't have an iPhone in his other pocket? A phone for play and a phone for work is a pretty common set-up these days. Source: CrackBerry |

Long-rumored dual-dock prototype iPad appears on eBay Posted: 28 May 2012 09:53 AM PDT A recent eBay listing is showing off what is supposedly a prototype first-generation 16 GB iPad with a secondary dock connector on the side. We had known about the possibility of a landscape-dockable iPad ever since we saw an early rear casing, but this is the first time we've seen such a fully-assembled prototype. The testing software suited called SwitchBoard is currently loaded, which in and of itself would be fun to check out. In its current state, the touchscreen is unfortunately not working, but that might be fixed if you can find a clip to secure the ribbon from the iPad's digitizer. The battery is also not an original, since Apple had it removed. It's currently running a beta of iOS 3.2 and bears the same A1219 model number as all other first-gen Wi-Fi iPads. It sure is fun getting to see this early stage stuff, even well after the original device has been released. This dual-dock iPad is quite the collector's item, if nothing else, and who knows - maybe there are some secrets about Apple's pre-production process to be unearthed from tinkering around with this thing. For example, a few weeks ago a guy from British Columbia was selling an early-stage Mac with transparent casing so they could do smoke tests and see how airflow works within a particular design. The same guy is currently trying to sell a fully restored Lisa system for $24,995, and as you might expect, this prototype iPad also means big bucks. The current bidding sits at $4,800, with a buyout price of $10,000. Anyone biting? You only have until 9 PM Pacific tonight to get in on the action. Would anyone have preferred if the iPad had its dock set for portrait rather than landscape? Would having both really been practical, or was this just for testing purposes? |
Best jailbreak apps for iPhone Posted: 28 May 2012 08:16 AM PDT iMore's authoritative guide to the very best Cydia apps, tweaks, and more for your jailbroken iPhone and iPod touchJust jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 on your iPhone and iPad and looking for the very best apps, tweaks, and other enhancements to try out? With jailbreak comes Cydia, the jailbreak app store, and an amazing amount of software simply unavailable inside Apple's App Store. But which ones are the best? Which are the top jailbreak apps you simply have to try out right now? Below you'll find iMore's favorite productivity enhancements, Notification Center enhancements, Messaging enhancements, customization and theme engines, and a lot of extras. Whether you're new to jailbreak or just want a handy link to share with family and friends, check out the apps below. (And don't forget our jailbreak starter guide for even more information and assistance.) We'll be adding additional sections and apps here as well, so check back often!
SBSettingsWho likes to tap all the way into Settings to disable Wifi or 3G? I know I don't when I can just use SBSettings to disable it with two taps from virtually anywhere on my iPhone. SBSettings has a limitless amount of toggles available in Cydia and can be customized and tweaked until your heart's content. If you want a quick toggle to turn off SMS alerts, you've got it. It also allows you to monitor free memory and clear it out. All with a simple swipe on your status bar. Free - Cydia Search LinkActivatorActivator is also a staple in the jailbreak world when it comes to accessing information and applications quickly. You may already have it and not know it. A lot of jailbreak applications and utilities require it. The main function of Activator is to allow you to set gestures for different functions. For example, I double tap on my status bar and a quick reply window for BiteSMS pops up. I can set virtually any gesture I want for any application that supports Activator gestures (a lot of the popular ones do). Free - Cydia Search LinkNotification enhancement appsWhile iOS 5 added a ton of enhancements to the way notifications are handled and presented, Apple still left a lot of room for improvement. This is where apps like LockInfo and IntelliscreenX step in to give you even more control over how notifications are handled. I've never been a fan of how iOS 5 discards notifications from the lockscreen immediately after unlocking. I like them to stay there until I dismiss them myself. IntelliscreenXIntelliscreenX gives you the ability to add widgets and other information to your lockscreen and notification center. IntelliscreenX takes it one step further and adds a "top shelf" that allows you to add quick toggles you can access with a quick swipe down on notification center. This is a convenient place to stick SBSettings or any other toggles you may find yourself using quite often. You can even place phone contacts in Notification Center for quick access. A huge plus of IntelliscreenX is that it comes bundled with Intelliborn's popular messaging enhancement app Messages+, which is normally $7.99 on its own. So for only $2 more you get both programs. If you are a BiteSMS fan, it also supports that as well. $9.99 - Cydia Search LinkLockInfoLockInfo also allows you to access a lot of the same information as IntelliscreenX does but it a bit more customizable from my experience. You can replace Notification Center with LockInfo's well-known Infoshade to add even more control over information. From here you can add contacts, quick toggles, and lots of other information. If you'd like to add enhancement to your messaging app you'll have to buy them separately as LockInfo doesn't come bundled with anything. It does support iRealSMS, QuickReply, and BiteSMS so you've got a bit of choice. There are tons of extensions, add-ons, and themes available for it. LockInfo is one of the original notification enhancement apps and still manages to be one of the best. $7.99 - Cydia Search LinkBoth apps are great notification enhancers but they differ in some areas and feature sets. Choose the one that's personally right for you. To help you decide which one may appeal to you more, you can check out our LockInfo vs IntelliscreenX comparison. Each also have free trials so if you still can't decide, you can always try both before deciding. Messaging enhancementsWhile multitasking in iOS 4 made switching between applications a lot easier, you still have to completely exit whatever you're doing to reply to a text message. Apps like BiteSMS and Messages+ aim to close that gap with quick reply functionality. Instead of having to exit out of an app a quick reply keyboard pops up, you type your message, away it goes, and you're back to whatever you were doing before without interruption. Messages+Messages+ is an update of the messaging enhancement app TLert. The update not only brought a more streamline experience but deep integration into iOS 5. It literally looks like something Apple would release. While BiteSMS aims to bring you an array of different customizations and user controls, Messages+ aims to be an easy to use add-on that just works. There's next to nothing to configure. You just enable Messages+ and set up a quick compose gesture and you're on your way. So if quick-replay is what you're after and not much more, Messages+ is a better option. If you've purchased IntelliscreenX, you also get a license for Messages+ as well. Of course you can use BiteSMS if you prefer it over Messages+ but it's nice that Intelliborn gives such a deep discount for bundling them together. $7.99 - Cydia Search LinkBiteSMSOne thing that sets BiteSMS apart is its ability to customize almost every aspect of your experience. You can choose what buttons you'd like to show up on your quick reply windows such as send, open, close, mark for later, Skype, FaceTime, templates, and more. The quick compose feature provides the option of auto-populating contacts. You can choose for it to auto show favorites, the last person you messaged, and more. BiteSMS allows you to purchase credits as well if you don't want to pay text messaging fees. It can add up to be a lot cheaper than text messaging plans. $9.99 - Cydia Search LinkCustomizing your iPhoneIf you want to customize the look and feel of your iPhone, there are thousands of free and paid themes in Cydia. You can also choose from a few different utilities to theme. Some themes may require Winterboard while others will require Dreamboard. There are also applications like Theme It available in Cydia that aim to bring the best of the best themes straight to your iPhone all in one place. If you don't necessarily want an all in one theme but still want to customize to your liking, you can check out Springtomize 2. Springtomize 2 allows you to customize individual aspects of your iPhone's overall appearance. There are tons of add-ons and built-in options to choose from. If you tend to be more picky, Springtomize 2 is probably a better bet as it offers far more control. Winterboard - Free - Cydia Search LinkDreamboard - Free - Cydia Search LinkSpringtomize 2 - $2.99 - Cydia Search LinkExtrasIf you're looking for tweaks that just make your iPhone that much cooler when jailbroken, here's some extra tweaks we've found that are just cool in general. FolderEnhancer and InfinifoldersIf you want to stick more than 12 apps into a single folder or nest folders, either of these two apps will get the job done by basically removing Apple's folder limitation. Add as many apps as you want and customize folder behavior. Both are great apps so the decision on which one to go with is really up to you. FolderEnhancer - $1.99 - Cydia Search LinkInfinifolders - $1.99 - Cydia Search LinkInfinidockAdd endless amounts of icons to your dock and scroll through them. No more choosing between only four apps to stick in your dock. $0.99 - Cydia Search LinkCyntactAdds contact pictures to your address book next to each contact. $0.99 - Cydia Search LinkBlurriedNCBackgroundBlurs the background of notification center. Nothing to configure and doesn't add any additional icons. Free - Cydia Search LinkShrinkChange the default size of icons in your dock and on your homescreen. I find this particularly useful if you have a background you'd like to see without huge icons being in your way. $1.49 - Cydia Search LinkBarrelAdd cool transitions when tabbing through pages on your springboard. Make your icons roll, fall away, and more. $2.99 - Cydia Search LinkAdditional ResourcesIf you have any additional must-have Cydia apps, tweaks, or extensions to add to the list, drop them in the comments below. If you need more help deciding which ones to try, check out these articles and resources.

Apple retail staff to enjoy raise earlier than expected Posted: 28 May 2012 07:34 AM PDT Apple retail employees will be getting salary increases June 30, a full three months ahead of the originally scheduled September date. The announcement was made by newly-appointed Senior VP of Apple Retail John Browett through an internal video. Raises will vary from 1% - 5%, depending on store performance, but this early advance is likely to be a one-time thing. On the corporate side of Apple, it was recently announced that stockholding employees would be able to get dividend equivalents on their RSUs, so it's good to see the retail staff are getting a bit of a treat too. With Tim Cook's formal appointment as Apple CEO last year, and Browett being brought on to replace former retail head, Ron Johnston, suggestions have been made that Apple's corporate culture is becoming more traditional. Regardless of which side you fall on that particular debate, combined with Apple's new charitable donations matching policy, it does seem like employees are being given more formal attention these days than they were in the past. (Though free iPhones back in 2007 were certainly a great bonus.) It's interesting that the raise is being timed before the expected iPhone 5 launch this fall; one would think that a performance-based raise timed alongside a critical product release would help keep sales staff motivated to work extra hard, but maybe they're trying to reduce churn now so they'll be fully-staffed for the coming onslaught. Given some of the doubts expressed following his hire, maybe Browett's just trying to establish some good will as he starts his position leading the Apple retail army? Any Apple employees in the house excited about the salary bump? It's a fairly standard amount, but getting it early is nice. Would Apple be better to hold off on retail salary increases until the fall, or to do them earlier from here on in? Source: 9to5Mac |
Monday Brief: Enyo team members head to Google, Absinthe 2.0 released, and more! Posted: 28 May 2012 05:13 AM PDT |
1.2 million iOS 5.1.1 devices jailbroken with Absinthe 2.0 Posted: 28 May 2012 05:11 AM PDT The Absinthe 2.0 jailbreak is now responsible for jailbreaking more than 1.2 million iOS 5.1.1 devices since its release on Friday. The Absinthe 2.0 jailbreak supports nearly every iOS device, including the iPhone 4S and the just-released new iPad. Some stats since release of #Absinthe - 211,401 jailbroken iPad3's and 973,086 devices newly jailbroken! #JBFTW ! ;D While over 365 million cumulative iOS devices have been sold to date, there's no way of knowing how many are still active. Given that every iOS device generation tends to outsell all previous generations combined, the number of active devices is likely quite high. Still, 1.2 million jailbreaks in three days, on the latest firmware, is a big number. It shows that, despite the additional functionality Apple has added to iOS 5, many users still want the freedom to tweak and personalize their devices beyond stock settings, and run apps beyond those approved by Apple's official App Store (and if it's for less legitimate reasons, they should read this). In an iMore poll on the iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak, 44% of readers said they'd already jailbroken with Absinthe 2.0, and almost 12% were simply waiting to see if there were any issues before jailbreaking. 27% were not interested in the jailbreak at all, and 17% didn't rule it out, but weren't currently interested. If you're interested in jailbreak but worried that it is a complicated process, fear not, we have a iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak how-to walkthough showing the complete process, as well as a full jailbreak starters guide to get you going once you're done. If you need any further help, jump right into our Jailbreak Forum. Were you one of the 1.2 million users who jailbroke iOS 5.1.1 using Absinthe 2.0 this weekend? If so, let us know which device(s) you jailbroke and what your experience has been like so far -- loving it or hating it? And what apps, add-ons, and other customizations you've installed post-jailbreak. Source: Chronic Dev Team |

How to set alarms and timers, and find out the time anywhere in the world using Siri Posted: 27 May 2012 08:30 PM PDT Siri ties right into the iOS Clock app on your iPhone 4S, which means if you want to be woken up at 7am, have a timer set for 10 minutes so the cookies don't burn, or find out what the hour is in Australia before you call, Siri can help.
How to set an alarm with SiriIf you use your iPhone as an alarm clock, Siri can help you set alarms faster and more easily than ever.
If you tap the Alarm widget, you'll launch the Clock app on the iPhone and be taken to the Alarm tab so you can make manual changes. Note: Siri can't set an alarm for more than one day in advance. If you try to use Siri to set an alarm further in advance, you'll be asked if you want to set a Reminder instead. How to set a repeating alarm with SiriIf you want an alarm to repeat, for example, to wake you up at the same time every day, you can use Siri to set it up as well.
Look closely at Siri's confirmation to make sure you see the proper repetition interval above the ON switch. How to show current alarms with SiriOver time, you may lose track of all the alarms you've set, especially inactive ones. With Siri, it's easy to get a list of all of the, and see their current status -- on or off.
You can quickly toggle any of the alarms shown from on to off or vice versa, or ask Siri to change or delete them. (See below.) How to change an alarm with SiriIf you set an alarm with Siri, but later need to change it, simply tell Siri and it will make the necessary adjustments.
How to turn off alarms with SiriNights get late, meetings get canceled, and plans change. If you no longer need an alarm, for example, if you no longer want to get woken up in the morning, you can ask Siri to turn it off. Note: Turning off is different than canceling or deleting. When you turn an alarm off, it remains available for you to quickly turn back on at any time, even manually. When you cancel or delete an alarm, it's gone completely and needs to be recreated if you ever want to use it again.
As above, you can quickly toggle any alarm or alarms back to on if you made a mistake. How to delete alarms with SiriWhen turning off alarms isn't enough, and you want them completely gone from your Clock system entirely, Siri a fast way to delete a specific alarm, and an incredibly fast way to delete all of them.
How to set a timer with SiriSince the Clock app can set timers as well as alarms, Siri can set timers as well as alarms. Whether you're waiting for your cookies to bake, or your next set of circuit training reps to begin, Siri can make sure you always alerted at exactly the right time.
The Timer widget will remain visible on your screen until the timer goes off. If you tap the Timer widget, you'll launch the Clock app on the iPhone and be taken to the Timer tab. Note: Siri can only run one timer at a time. If you try to set another, Siri will ask you if you want to keep the current one or change to the new one. (See below.) How to show, stop, or re-start a timer with SiriIf Siri is no longer displaying your timer, you can easily ask it to show you the timer again, and to pause/stop or start it whenever you like.
How to change a timer with SiriSiri can also change the duration of a timer, if you need to increase or decrease the length for any reason.
How to find out the time, anywhere in the world, with SiriWhat if you need to know the time in Cupertino, California so you don't miss that Apple keynote? Or what if you need to check the time in Jerusalem, Israel so you don't wake up your friend by calling too early? Simple -- ask Siri.
If you tap the Clock widget, you'll launch the Clock app on the iPhone and be taken to the World Clock. Siri can also check the Calendar app to tell you what data next Thursday is, or what day of the week a specific date falls on. We'll cover that in another section. How to get more help with SiriIf you still need help with setting up or using Siri with your iPhone Contacts, or any other Siri feature, head on over to our Siri Forum and ask away!
