Universal apparently now participating in iTunes Movies in the Cloud Posted: 07 Apr 2012 05:19 PM PDT According to numerous iMore readers, Universal Studies movies are now showing as available to re-download via iTunes Movies in the Cloud. Part of Apple’s iCloud offering, apps, iBooks, and music were available at launch, with TV Shows following soon thereafter. Movies in the Cloud were added shortly after the new iPad but only in the US and only from a few studies. This may have been due to the so-called “HBO window”, when cable operators like HBO have exclusive license to certain movie for a certain period. The Wall Street Journal previously reported, however, that HBO was open to negotiations.
Hopefully this is what’s happened with Universal, and hopefully it will happen with the other remaining Movies in the Cloud hold-outs. And hopefully we’ll get it outside the US soon as well! Note: MacRumors is reporting the same. |
Have your iPhone follow you wherever you go with the Galileo robotic stand Posted: 07 Apr 2012 02:15 PM PDT Let’s say you’re trying to have a Skype or FaceTime video call but you’re also busy moving around an doing things. You can’t hold your iPhone because your hands are full but you can’t put it down either because you’ll continuously be out of frame. Enter the Galileo robotic stands for the iPhone! It automagically follows you whichever way you go with complete, 360 degree rotational ability. (And it’s cute too!)
For everything from baby monitoring to remote learning, time lapse photography to cinematography, to all manner of specialty imagining, the Galileo provides full 360 degree pan and tilt, can be controolled via your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or the web, and can even be mounted on standard tripods! The Galileo is rechargeable and can charge your iPhone as well. It works with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4, and comes in black or white, or limited edition Kickstarter green. But the most exciting part is this — Galileo has an SDK! That means Galileo can be integrated into full on robots. How cool is that? Galileo comes from Motr and the inventive minds of Josh Guyot and JoeBen Bevirt, who previously created the Joby and GorillaPod camera mounts. It’s up on Kickstarter now and has 13 days to go. So, if you like it, head on over the get a backing! Source: Kickstarter |

A photographic look inside Apple’s Cupertino headquarters Posted: 07 Apr 2012 07:03 AM PDT Apple’s Cupertino, California headquarters might as well be the moon when it comes to technology. It’s managed to become so famous yet remain so mysterious that while almost everyone knows of it, few have actually set foot inside it. Apple Gazette has done a great job compiling photographs that offer a glimpse inside Apple’s real walled garden, beyond even the Company Store and Caffe Macs. There’s something for every Apple fan, from the wood, glass, and metal you might expect, to the pixel-art signage on the bathrooms you might not, to a fantastic shot of Tony Fadell, Jon Rubinstein, Jony Ive, Steve Jobs, and Phil Schiller in the meeting room. Check it out via the link below and if you’ve ever visited 1 Infinite Loop, share your photos in our forum! Source: Apple Gazette; image via Daniel Brusilovsky |
Blade-Tech tactical holster for… your iPhone! Posted: 07 Apr 2012 06:35 AM PDT Blade-Tech isn’t your everyday, ordinary iPhone accessory maker. In fact, iPhones are usually the last thing you think of when you hear the name Blade-Tech. The first thing, obviously, is blades — as in knives — followed closely by guns. That’s probably why Blade-Tech isn’t selling a iPhone cable or even a case. Blade Tech is selling an iPhone holster. The Smart Phone Holster for your iPhone fits the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 and works with cases like the Otter BOX Commuter Series, Otter BOX Defender, MAGPUL Executive, MAGPUL Field, and SI Battle Case. The iPhone Holster is hand-crafted and comes with Tek-Lok belt clip or KLIP, so you can carry your iPhone on your hip, locked and loaded, with the screen facing in or out. Now certainly not everyone is going to want a tactical holster for the iPhone, but it continues to be amazing to see just how far and wide iPhone adoption has become. And you just know that it’s because of options like this everyone from Sarah Walker to Sarah Connor would be packing an iPhone come go time. If you were off to fight enemy spies or killer robots, or you simply want quick access to your ruggedly protected iPhone in the theater of your choosing, would Blade-Tech be your go to holster? Bloomberg for iPad review: The best casual stock app for the iPad Posted: 06 Apr 2012 06:13 PM PDT Bloomberg for iPad is a great way for casual traders and investors to interact with their stocks and stay up to date with the news they care about the most. The App Store is chock full of applications to help investors and traders manage their portfolios directly from their iPad. While some applications provide a wealth of information and are geared towards brokers and users with extensive portfolios, most users just don’t need a $100 application to check in on their stocks. I’ve found Bloomberg for iPad to be a good compromise between usability and information overload.
Whether you need to casually monitor stocks on your iPad or just find the urge to check out financial news, Bloomberg provides the best of both worlds combined with an easy to use interface. I’ve found that some of the applications in the App Store are quite hard to navigate and may be confusing for many users to figure out. Sometimes too many charts and graphs can be overwhelming. Bloomberg gives you what you want to know right up front. NavigationUpon first launching Bloomberg for iPad, you’ll be presented with a home page that shows top news stories, some stock information, and a menu along the bottom that allows you to delve deeper into different categories of information. This is where you can go to customize your experience. Say you don’t have bonds but own stocks. You can choose the stocks section and add stocks you own to the app. You’ll then see that information populate in the home screen. The real time tickers will continuously update for you on the home page as long as you’ve got an active internet connection. Stock infoYou can tap into any news story or stock directly from the main page. Tapping into a stock will present you with a large well laid-out graph showing a 1 year overview of that stock’s position. You’ll also be given some general summary information along the bottom about that particular stock and the company itself. On the right hand side you’ll see some broken down time period graphs. You can tap these to enlarge them further. Supported exchangesBloomberg provides information for all major stock exchanges and several smaller exchanges. Some of the most popular ones supported are –
There are many more supported exchanges too. You can also view futures for all exchanges as well. Tapping into any exchange will provide you the same history information that tapping into an individual stock would provide. StocksBloomberg allows you to customize your own stocks within the application. Just tap the My Stocks icon from the main page. Tapping the edit button in the upper right hand corner brings up a list of stocks you’ve added. You can add stocks as well as put in your position and price. The term position in this instance means the quantity of securities you own. For example, if you own 200 shares of Apple stock, 200 would be your postion. Then you would input the price you paid per share. For in depth investors who trade regularly, they may need a more powerful tool that breaks out information better. On the main My Stocks page you can tap the bottom My Stock Summary tab to bring up a summary of your current position given the information you input. It will break it out by exchange and give you an overall position. It will show you an overview of how many securities you own, the net change, overall change, what your securities are currently valued at, and your total profit and loss. Currency ExchangeBloomberg supports and updates live currency values within the app as well. You can set your default currency and it will then show you how your native dollar compares to monetary amounts around the rest of the world. To do so, just drag your home currency to the top of the list when in edit mode. This information will also populate within the main page as well for a quick view. Just like stocks and other sections of the app, you can edit the currency order. Just move them up and down with the vertical stacked bars. NewsWhile the main page shows top news, you can also tap into the news category and view a breakdown of news by section. This is also customizable. Tapping the edit button in the top right will let you move the sections you care about most towards the top and the ones you don’t really have an interest in towards the bottom. This makes it a bit easier to find stories you want to read. The Good
The Bad
The ConclusionBloomberg for iPad is a great way for casual traders and investors to interact with their stocks and stay up to date with the news they care about the most. While it may not be perfect for everyone, it provides a wealth of information that will suit mainstream users just fine. If you’re more interested in world and financial news than you are stocks, Bloomberg doubles up as a great resource for such information. It ties news and the stock market together in a fluid way that users will appreciate. Free – Download Now |
Everyone can make music with Figure for iPhone Posted: 06 Apr 2012 06:06 PM PDT Figure is a great new app that puts music creation into the hands of everyone, even non-musicians. It has a very unique interface that’s easy to use and makes creating music a lot of fun. You slide your finger around a pad to play bass and lead, and tap columns to play the drums. What makes Figure so great for non-musicians is that you will always be in the correct key and play to the beat. You get to be creative with the pitch and tones, but Figure will always make sure that your choices are “correct” musically. For base and lead, you can choose from many different rhythm styles and timing, specify the range of notes you want the pad to represent, and select how many steps you want in an octive. Switching into landscape will remove all the distractions of the controls and give you more room to move your finger precisely where you want it on the pad. For drums, you get to play kick, snare, hats, and cowbell and choose how many of each are played in a measure if you hold your finger down. Hitting record will let you layer the three different instrument types and it will automatically loop your song. You can make adjustments in real time so that you’re fully away of how your changes affect your song. The types of changes you can do include the tempo and key. You can also add pump so that your song sounds like club music. This is an app that you need to see in action, so make sure you check out the video below! The Good
The Bad
The ConclusionFigure is a really fun and surprisingly addicting app. Creating music has never been so easy, and it’s a great way for non-musicians to get a feel for creating music and beats. $0.99 – Download Now |
Keep your Twitter timeline and DM’s synced between devices with Tweetbot for iPhone and iPad Posted: 06 Apr 2012 05:33 PM PDT If you’ve been looking for a way to keep your Twitter timeline synced between your iPhone and iPad, you’ll be happy to know that Tweetbot has been updated with the ability to do just that with the help of iCloud sync. Before, many users were using the service called Tweet Marker that aided in keeping your Twitter timeline synced between different devices and clients. What it couldn’t do, was sync the read status of direct messages. With iCloud sync, you can read a DM in Tweetbot for iPad, and when you switch to Tweetbot on your iPhone, that DM will already be marked as read there as well. You no longer have to “mark all as read” when switching devices! In addition to your timeline and direct messages, iCloud sync in Tweetbot will also keep your mute filters synced across devices. Some other improvements include thumbnail previews for YouTube and iTunes links, and the ability to pinch to close an image on the iPad. Now, if only there was Tweetbot for Mac… $2.99 for iPhone – Download Now$2.99 for iPad – Download Now |
