Apple airs the new iPad commercial

Apple airs the new iPad commercial

Apple showed off the new iPad commercial during their event today and now they’ve placed it online both on their website and on YouTube (which is much more easily embeddable here.) It includes elements of Apple’s iPad 2 commercials past, namely the idea that technology should disappear, but also elements of Apple’s iPhone 4 commercials which focused on the Retina display.

When a screen becomes this good. Colors are more vibrant. Words are pin sharp. Everything is more brilliant. Because when a screen becomes this good. It’s simply you and the things you care about. The stunning Retina display. On the new iPad.

New apps like iPhoto also get shown off, along with iBooks and iTunes movies, and a painting app.

Very solid,

AT&T vs Verizon: Which 4G LTE new iPad should you get?

AT&T vs Verizon: Which 4G iPad should you get?

Now that you’ve decided to get the 4G LTE flavor of the new iPad in the US, the question becomes — AT&T or Verizon, which carrier should you choose? For most of us, the decision will come down to two factors – coverage and pricing.

Here’s how it breaks down.

Pricing plans

Here’s the pricing comparison chart that Apple displays on the ordering page for the new iPad. All plans are commitment free — you can cancel at anytime.

AT&T vs Verizon iPad prices

So with regards to cost, you need to ask yourself how much data you plan on using. Realistically, if you have Wifi at home, work  and school (if you’re a student), you can probably get by just fine with AT&T’s 200MB per month plan and cut the montly cost in half.

On the other hand, if you plan to consume a lot of data, Verizon may be the way to go since they offer a 10GB per month plan.

LTE availability

In addition to price, you must also consider where each carrier offers coverage and if you’re within that area. Here’s a side by side comparison of Verizon’s and AT&T’s coverage maps (left is Verizon, right is AT&T).

at&t vs verizon coverage maps

Clearly, Verizon has much more LTE availability (green dots vs orange dots.)  If you live in an area where Verizon offers LTE and AT&T does not, your best bet is to probably go with Verizon, providing that their network is pretty solid in that area. If you’re not sure, ask your family, friends, and coworkers who have LTE phones on Verizon’s network.

If LTE is not available to you on either network, the next thing to look at is 3G coverage. If you live somewhere that only gets EDGE on AT&T (light blue on AT&T’s map), Verizon is the way to go.

Most of you, however, will be in one of these last two categories: an LTE available area on both Verizon and AT&T, or, in a 3G, but not LTE available area on both Verizon and AT&T. For those of you in this category, I’m inclined to recommend AT&T, provided that the 3G network is stable in your area. Again, ask your friends, family, and coworkers for their experience.

Why AT&T, you ask? Because AT&T’s HSPA and HSPA+ 3G networks are faster than Verizon’s CDMA 3G network. It’s all about the speed.

You can get a closer look at AT&T’s coverage map here and Verizon’s map here.

Making the choice

So which one are you going to choose? Personally, since AT&T’s LTE network is not available in my area, but Verizon’s is, it was a no-brainer for me to choose Verizon (even though my iPhone is with AT&T). What about you?

Samsung goes on the attack, pits Galaxy Note 10.1 stylus vs. the new iPad

Samsung goes on the attack: Galaxy Note 10.1 vs. the new iPad

Wow, Samsung really didn’t waste any time putting together this handy, if incredibly skewed chart showing how their upcoming Galaxy Note 10.1 compares with the New iPad announced by Apple today. The Note 10.1, which will no doubt sell hundreds of dozens of units, does indeed come with some fancy stylus integration and a more desktop-like user interface, thanks to Android.

The new iPad, which will no doubt sell tens of millions of units, comes with everything else… like apps, accessories and a fantastic, mainstream user interface.

Kudos to Samsung though. Way to bring a stylus to an experience fight!

How is your new iPad pre-ordering going?

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 02:13 PM PST

Pre-orders for the new iPad not going smoothly for most

In the tradition and spirit of any new product launch, pre-orders are failing spectacularly for most. The pre-order page went up shortly after Apple’s iPad event and many users haven’t been able to get past the first few pages before a time out occurred or the Apple Store app crashed.

After 90 painstaking minutes of hitting refresh and several time outs, I was able to finally get a new iPad into my cart. About 10 tries to get to the checkout later, I finally had a processed order. Some users still don’t appear to be having any luck.

Did you get your pre-order through, are you still trying, or have you given up? Hit the link below and let us know your pre-order status. And while you wait, check out the rest of our iPad event coverage while you relentlessly hit refresh and wait for your order to finally go through.

iOS 5.1 magically adds 4G to your AT&T iPhone

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 01:50 PM PST

A wand adding 4G to an iPhone

If you’ve updated your AT&T iPhone to iOS 5.1, you may have noticed that the signal indicator in the top-left now reads 4G instead of 3G. Now, before your mind gets blown all over the place, there’s no actual upgrade here; it’s just your garden-variety marketing doucherosity wriggling its slimy way into a software update. AT&T could not possibly abide by competitors have more or higher-quality “Gs” than they do, so they’ve arbitrarily changed the wording of the signal indicator. Of course, the ITU has made it so that carriers can do this without repercussion, and ruined any practical use of talking in terms of 3G or 4G networks; in fact, AT&T has already been taking plenty of advantage of this opportunity with Android devices.

So welcome to the world of 4G, AT&T iPhone owners. Do you feel faster? Does simply seeing “4G” on your home screen make you feel more in the future?

Apple posts the new iPad event stream video

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 01:22 PM PST

Apple has wasted very little time posting the video stream from today's new iPad event as it is now live on Apple's events page. You can now see for yourself how Apple introduced the upgraded Apple TV as well as the next generation iPad wtih a stunning 2048 x 1536 Retina display.

You can watch the complete keynote right now on Apple.com. It hasn't arrived in iTunes as a podcast as of yet; we will keep an eye out for it and let you know as soon as it does.

Apple increases app download limit to 50 MB over cellular network

Apple increases app download limit to 50 MB over cellular network

Apple has increased the 20 MB app download limit to 50 MB when connected to a cellular network. This comes as a surprise, as it was not announced during today’s event alongside the new iPad.

Previously, when connected to a 3G network, if you attempted to download an app the was over 20 MB, a popup would appear instructing you to connect to a Wi-Fi network in order to download. Now, that warning only appears when the app is over 50 MB — which is a huge app; or, it used to be. Soon we’ll be seeing Retina display iPad graphics included in universal apps, which could easily make even rather modest apps reach 50 – 60 MB.

Since the new iPad will be available with 4G LTE connectivity, the size increase makes perfect sense — for LTE. Including 3G with the size increase is the cherry on top. Let’s just hope it’s enough. Those of us with capped data plans will just need to pay a little more attention to our monthly usage as app size increases.

GarageBand updated with collaborative jam sessions

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 12:57 PM PST

An iPad GarageBand jam session

GarageBand got an honorable mention at today’s iPad 3 new iPad event, along with a few new features. There are now orchestral string instruments (along with existing drums, keyboards, and guitars), a note editor to tweak your performance in post-production, iCloud integration to access your creations elsewhere, and new sharing options to get them out to your friends. The biggest addition is jam sessions, which allow up to 4 iOS devices to collaborate on the same piece over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

GarageBand launched alongside the iPad 2 last year, so it’s only fitting to be getting a big update with the new iPad announcement. While I don’t expect that I’ll be throwing any GarageBand parties with all of my hip young iPad-toting friends, it’s a neat addition for a generation that’s spent a healthy amount of time playing Rock Band with their buddies. Do you guys think you’d end up doing any GarageBand jam sessions? Is GarageBand even an app that you spend a considerable amount of time with?

If you don’t have it already, but are interested in giving it a shot, you can download it from the iTunes App Store here for $4.99, or can learn more (along with Jam Session video demo) over at Apple’s GarageBand minisite. I’m not seeing the update as live yet, but I’m sure it’ll be there soon.

iOS 5.1 available OTA and on iTunes now!

iOS 5.1 available OTA and on iTunes now!

iOS 5.1 for iPhone and iPad is now available over-the-air (OTA) and in iTunes!

While we haven’t tested it yet, it looks like we will need to put 5.1 on our iPads before we can see the updates to the iWork and iLife apps mentioned today.

To download OTA, launch settings, tap General, then Software Update, and the update should pop up with an option to Download and install. To download via iTunes, just plug your iPhone or iPad into your computer and open iTunes — a message informing you of the available update should pop right up.

Now what are you waiting for? Go grab it!

We will keep you updated as we install the update and see what features are available immediately!

New iPad vs. ASUS Transformer Infinity (Android) vs. BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 12:40 PM PST

New iPad vs. ASUS Transformer Infinity (Android) vs. BlackBerry PlayBook 2.0

Apple announced the new iPad at their event today, but how does it compare to the recently announced Android 4.1 Ice Cream Sandwich-packing ASUS Transformer Infinity, and the just updated PlayBerry PlayBook 2.0?

Pretty damn well, actually. The display is best in class, as we expected, and the LTE 4G networking puts it on par with Android tablets. The cameras, especially the still VGA (?!) front facing cameras, don’t win the megapixel war, but we’ll have to see how well they shoot in the real world. ASUS provides more in the way of ports, of course, with micro-SD and micro-HDMI. The PlayBook is compact enough to cary in a jacket pocket.

Still, if the bar is set at simplicity and pure technology, the new iPad clears it  - with room to spare. Android still wins on flexibility, and a more desktop-like user experience. PlayBook is both small and inexpensive.

We will certainly being pitting the new iPad against the competition in a much more comprehensive manner once we get our hands on one…stay tuned.

The new iPad up for preorder today, starting at $499

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 12:06 PM PST

The new iPad

Eager to pick up the newly-announced (and oddly under-named) iPad? Well, preorders are available right now, following some online store downtime. Pricing starts at $499 for the Wi-Fi-only model ($599 for 32 GB, $699 for 64 GB), going up to $829 for the full-blown 64 GB LTE model ($729 for 32 GB, $629 for 16 GB). Carrier support in the U.S. will be  provided by AT&T and Verizon.  Canada’s three major carriers, Rogers, Bell and Telus feature prominently, so expect the new iPad up north soon as well. Launch date is March 16, which is just a little over a week away.

If you haven’t been following, the new iPad has a 2048 x 1536 display, 4G LTE connectivity, a quad-core graphics processor, and an upgraded 5 megapixel camera with similar gubbins as the iPhone 4. It’s under a millimeter thicker than the iPad 2, but otherwise has the same form factor as before.

Right now, the only Apple Store is understandably having a rough time loading, but keep hitting it, since stock is bound to run out quickly. Be sure to check carrier sites if you’re in the market for the LTE model. Anyone chomping at the bit to get one of these?

So are you getting an iPad?

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 11:57 AM PST

As part of their iPad event today, Apple announced their all new, super sweet iPad. While some may be lining up next week or pre-ordering today, some may prefer to go for a discounted iPad 2 or keep their existing model. We want to know what everyone in the iMore nation thinks of the new iPad. Will you be picking one up?

Apple drops prices on the iPad 2 – 16GB WiFi Model – now only $399, 3G model now $529

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 11:40 AM PST

iPad 2 Hero

As expected, with the announcement of the new iPad Apple has gone ahead and dropped the prices for the iPad 2. If you head on over to the Apple store right now, you will find the iPad 2 16GB with WiFi available for only $399 while the 16GB WiFi + 3G is now starting at only $529.

The New iPad has quite a few new features built into it, including the new retina display, updated camera, 4G LTE and more –  but the iPad 2 is still a serious contender in the tablet market. If you’re not looking to spend $499  for a New iPad, an iPad 2 at $399 looks very tempting.

It will come with many new features including new gestures, effects, multi-touch editing and the ability to send images wirelessly between devices.

Better photo management and editing has been a much desired feature for iOS devices. No word yet on whether or not you’ll be able to organize photos into albums or events yet. iPhoto for iOS should should be a large improvement and will come with the following features -

  • Smart browsing

iMovie updated with support for 1080p recordings, outlining and storyboarding

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 11:23 AM PST

iMove for iOS updated

If you’re an iMovie fan, you’ll be pleased to know that a new update will soon be rolling out to the masses. As highlighted by Phil Schiller on stage, iMovie now has support for the New iPad and 1080p recording, along with outlining and storyboarding options from within the app.

Overall, this is a nice update and we’ll certainly be checking out the new additions – especially when we get our hands on the new iPad. Maybe another shootout will need to take place.

iMovie will be available starting today for $4.99 and as a free update for existing owners.

Infinity Blade: Dungeons coming to the new iPad

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 11:11 AM PST

Infinity Blade Dungeons coming soon to iOS

Sticking with a familiar format for Apple announcements, Epic Games has introduced a new saga in their blockbuster  Infinity Blade series. With the improved memory and processor capability on the New iPad, Epic Games has a lot more room to work within iOS as Mike Capps noted:

“This new device has more memory and higher screen resolution than an Xbox 360 or PS3."
That statement pretty much speaks for itself and highlights a great point about the new iPad;  it’s powerful and the display is stunning.

Sadly, there was no mention of when Infinity Blade Dungeons will be available to the masses and the Epic Games dedicated site for it has crashed and burned for now. You can hit the source link below for more details – eventually the site has to come back online.

iWork consists of three separate applications – Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. Each is currently priced at $9.99 each.

Confirmed: new iPad will feature 4G LTE connectivity

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 10:45 AM PST

New iPad will have 4G LTE

Apple has just confirmed live from today’s iPad event that the new iPad will indeed have support for LTE. iMore recently reported LTE capabilities as confirmed by one of our sources. LTE will support the following carriers in North America – Rogers, Telus, Bell, AT&T and Verizon.

We have not confirmed whether or not international LTE will be supported. It appears as if LTE may be a North America only feature unless Apple says otherwise. What we do know, is that you’ll be good for up to 9 hours of surf time on 4G, which is pretty amazing in itself.

We’ll update as we know more.

Voice dictation coming with the new iPad, but it’s not Siri

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 10:45 AM PST

Along with the new iPad  announcement, Phil Schiller noted some new additions to the device,  one of which is voice dictation –  but don’t go calling it Siri.

Voice dictation for the next generation iPad has been rumored since the announcement of the iPhone 4S with it having  Siri baked in.  For the new iPad, Apple has seemingly avoided including Siri, opting to simply include the dictation services and not the full personal assistant option.

A rather interesting move to say the least, especially considering the languages the voice dictation will support;  English, French, German, and of course now, Japanese.

New iPad to include quad-core A5X chip at its core

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 10:38 AM PST

iPad 3 to include quad-core A5X chip at its core

Apple announced during their iPad 3 event that the new iPad will indeed come packed with the rumored quad-core A5X SoC (system-on-a-chip) to power the device. It appears the quad-core chip will be directly tied into the graphics subsystem powering the device.

There was some debate prior to the announcement that Apple might be using a dual-core option with the A5X instead of jumping to an A6 chip, but many believed that would cause slowdown with heavy multi-tasking, as well as hinder gaming performance as Apple pushes iOS further into the portable gaming realm. It was also thought that Apple would be utilizing both the A5X alongside the A6, but that’s no longer the case.

The A5X should be enough power until Apple sees fit to introduce a more powerful A6 chip, which may also come in quad-core form but have a higher clock speed.

iOS 5.1 will be available starting today

Posted: 07 Mar 2012 10:30 AM PST

iOS 5.1 rumored to be coming on or around March 9

Apple has just announced that iOS 5.1 will be available to consumers starting today. Among the new features that will be included are things such as Siri support in Japan and the ability to delete individual photos within Photo Stream.

No word on whether the new iPad 3 will be released with iOS 5.1 or something higher. iOS 5.1 will probably start showing up as an update for many users after the iPad event is over today. If you manage to catch it in iTunes, let us know!

Looking at the interface,  you can see items are no longer “listed” but rather, laid out in a more icon like way so that items are easily viewed. The information lacking in the announcement here ,though, was any mention of specs for the new Apple TV however, it was noted it will be available as of March 16th while retaining the current Apple TV pricing of $99.

Apple has just announced from the iPad 3 event that their popular voice assistant, Siri, will be making its way to customers in Japan. It will be part of iOS 5.1 which will be available starting today. Siri will be rolled out in Japan over the next few weeks.

Siri is currently available in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, and France. This aligns with Apple’s plan to roll out Siri to even more countries during 2012.
