Engage in the journey of the creation of the alphabet with Numberlys for iPhone and iPad Posted: 16 Jan 2012 03:57 PM PST Numberlys is an interactive story about the origins of the alphabet from Moonbot Studios. In a world where everything and everyoone are named after numbers, five friends embark on a mission to create something different – the alphabet. I just finished watching, reading, and interacting with Numberlys and it’s a fantastic little story! The graphics are great and the narrator is just as awesome. Moonbot Studios did a great job of making this a hybrid between a book, movie, and game. It’s no question that any child would enjoy Numberlys, but most adults will too!
Numberlys is available on the iPhone and iPad for $5.99. Have an app you’d love to see featured on iMore? Email us at iosapps@imore.com, tell us about your app (include an iTunes link), and we’ll take a look. |

Powermat intros new iPhone 4 case, augmented reality app Posted: 16 Jan 2012 02:13 PM PST Powermat had a decent presence at CES 2012, not only by showing off their first Duracell co-branded iPhone 4 case and wireless charging pad, but also announcing their first app. Powermat has partnered with Madison Square Garden so that when you place your iPhone onto one of the mats built into the counters in the box seats, the app will give you the option to check in via Facebook Places. While that’s cool, and sets the stage for a future cross-section of location-based social networks and wireless charging, the real function of the Powermat app is to find charging locations with augmented reality; just point your iPhone’s camera in any given direction, and you’ll see which spots have a Powermat installed. Favorite places don’t have one? You can also use the app to vote on locations you’d like to see sporting some charging mats. Powermat can then use those votes to convince businesses to buy a few. Of course, the app will also issue a notification when you’re running low on battery life, and prompt you to launch into a search. One of the more interesting uses for Powermats in businesses is the notion of monetizing charging, so you’d have to pay another buck or two to activate the charging mat. Sure, it seems like a bit of a money grab, especially if Powermat ends up skimming some of that revenue for themselves, but certainly an interesting opportunity for business owners of call kinds. Sure, it’s handy having a few mats around the house to charge, but it’s when you’re out on the town that you’re likely to need a charge the most, so I’m really excited for these to become a more common sight. The Duracell partnership is cool firstly because it puts stand-alone wirelessly-charging batteries on the horizon, but also because Duracell is a early member of the Qi Consortium, so Powermat may eventually lead the charge in a global interoperable standard for the technology. Smartphone manufacturers will definitely be much more likely to start building in receivers if Powermat has managed to sell a bunch of compatible mats to the public already. The new iPhone 4 case, charging puck, pad, and app are due out in the Spring. Hit the jump for a video rundown (sorry for the obnoxious lighting).

Chris Oldroyd’s most-used accessories of 2011 Posted: 16 Jan 2012 01:21 PM PST When I was asked to put together a list of my most-used accessories of 2011, it got me thinking that I actually don’t use very many accessories at all. In total I have four that I use on a regular basis. Here’s a little bit about each one and why they are special to me.
Brodit iPhone 4S mountThere are a large variety of car mounts for the iPhone but Brodit from Sweden has been my number one mounting solution for the last ten years. It is an incredible mount that works beautifully. It comes in two parts, a Proclip that is specific to the make and model of car you own. They are available for different mounting positions within your car, you choose where you want your device and buy the Proclip to suit. Installing it is simple, no drilling or damage to your car interior, each clip is designed to be pushed into position and held in place by your cars dashboard surround. Once you have the Proclip installed, the Brodit mount screws into that and it is a really secure fit. The mounts are available in different configurations, some come with a 12V car plug, some with pass through connectors and some as just passive mounts. Whichever one you choose, it will be precision made, lined with soft padding and will fit perfectly. If you want a car mount, don’t bother with any other!
Kensington LiquidAUX For iPhone And iPodOf the many car audio interfaces for iPhone, the Kensington LiguidAUX is my favorite. My VW Passatt has a 3.5mm input for an iPod or iPhone but I really dislike having a charger in the bottom of my iPhone and another cable coming out of the 3.5mm jack. To get round this, I use a Kensington LiquidAUX. This doubles as a car charger but also takes the audio from the dock connector and transfers that to a 3.5mm input for your car stereo. This give you the flexibility to make all the cabling in your car much neater all round. The Kensington LiquidAUX also comes with a small remote control that you can fix to your steering wheel. This gives you the ability to skip tracks and play and pause without your hands leaving the wheel. It’s hard to find now, so if anyone knows of something similar, let me know in the comments.
iPhone 4S dockiPhone docks are essential. When my iPhone 4S isn’t in my hand, it will be in its dock at the side of my bed, that’s where it charges and syncs all my data to iCloud during the night. I have tried third party docks and none are as nice as the Apple dock. Yes it is expensive but you only get what you pay for. It feels solid, it fits perfectly and looks beautiful.
Marware CEO Hybrid for iPad 2I hate cases and refuse to have one on my iPhone 4S, unfortunatley the iPad 2 gets lot more rough treatment by my 2 year old so a case is a must for this. I considered many options but the Marware CEO Hybrid stood out for a few different reasons. First off is the fact that it works like an Apple Smart Cover, when you open it, the screen turns on. Secondly, it covers all areas of the device, it isn’t the slimmest case in the world, but it protects all angles. I have dropped it a few times on the road outside of my house and the case took the damage and the iPad 2 is perfect. The final reason is how it looks, a carbon fibre look, black and sexy. It really makes your iPad 2 look the part!

Apple adds new iTunes info pop-up tabs… that look just like Android Market Posted: 16 Jan 2012 01:19 PM PST Apple has snuck a couple of new features into their apps pages in iTunes, specifically an information popup with tabbed content remarkably similar to how Google presents Android Market details. We know that in the past Android has been accused of copying Apple, but like Notification Center this time it looks like Apple is the one caught with their fingers in the copy jar. The iTunes pop-up windows are activated by a new information icon which will appear when hovering over an app icon. The purpose of this is to make things easier — the information appears right in front of you now without having to click through and load a new page. Movies and TV shows are also getting in on the action, although they’ll have a play button to preview a clip of the video instead. |

HP CEO admits Apple may overtake their PC volume… if you count iPads Posted: 16 Jan 2012 10:40 AM PST HP CEO Meg Whitman admitted in a recent interview that if you count tablets, Apple may very well bust past them in PC sales after holiday sales are tallied up. A bunch of analyst estimates suggest Apple could break 20 million combined iPad and Mac unit sales over the holidays. That would put it over the 14.7 million that HP had churned out last quarter, and well ahead of other manufacturers like Acer, Dell, and Lenovo. Of course, if you don’t count the iPad, and only Mac sales, Apple falls well behind the whole lot. Over the holidays, it’s estimated Apple cleared little over 5 million Mac units. I’m still a little dubious about counting the current breed of tablets as full-blown PCs, despite being great computing devices. There’s no lack of Macbook Air owners that aren’t inclined to also carry around an iPad, and Windows 8 is showing that other big-boy laptops will soon be able to slim down to the size of tablets borne of smartphone operating systems. These are interesting estimates to consider, but we won’t know for sure how well Apple’s Mac and iPad sales did until they announce their quarterly results on January 24. What do you guys think – is it fair to lump in the iPad with Mac sales when talking about the PC market? Source: TechCrunch via Asymco |

France to get an almost transparent Apple Store Posted: 16 Jan 2012 09:08 AM PST Aix en Provence, France is getting a new Apple Store according to ifoAppleStore. It’ll be constructed in a way that’ll make it almost transparent. It will be modeled somewhat from the New York City Apple store on the upper west side. A store near me in Lincoln Park, IL already has an almost all glass design as well. Aix en Provence receives heavy tourism and could be considered a prime location. The area has seen a lot of construction lately with the addition of several up-scale stores and shops. The store should open to the public by late 2012 or early 2013. Nissan launching a line of self repairing iPhone cases Posted: 16 Jan 2012 06:23 AM PST Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has announced that it will soon be launching a line of self repairing cases for the iPhone. The Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone cases will use a special paint technology that Nissan already uses on its cars. The paint was developed back in 2005 in a joint effort between Nissan, the University of Tokyo and Advanced Softmaterials Inc. The outer 'paint' is made from polyrotaxane, which means that when damage occurs to the coating in the form of a fine scratch, the chemical structure is able to react to change back to its original shape and fill the gap – 'healing' the blemish. The case was shown off to the press at a motor show in Dubai with limited numbers available for testing. If demand is high, Nissan will look to launch the cases properly later in the year. It already licenses the paint technology to Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo who uses the finish on one of its own mobile devices. Source: TNW |

Hands on with olloclip, a wide angle, fisheye, and macro lens for iPhone Posted: 15 Jan 2012 11:40 PM PST At CES 2012, we had the opportunity to check out an olloclip, an accessory for the iPhone that converts the lens to either wide angle, fisheye, or macro. It simply slides onto the corner of your iPhone and is small enough to carry around in your pocket. After the demonstration, I picked one up for myself, and Rene and I used it for filming during the remainder of our time at CES – it made a huge difference. The olloclip is available now for $69.99. iPhone 4S untethered jailbreak shown off in video Posted: 15 Jan 2012 05:38 PM PST pod2g has updated his blog with a video by Chronic Dev Team member, DHowett, running an untethered iPhone 4S jailbreak on iOS 5.0.1. The video runs down everything you’d expect from rebooting the device to show an untethered state and launching Cydia and showing that the device ID is indeed an iPhone 4S. Considering the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 both run the Apple A5 chipset and weren’t vulnerable to previous exploits. pod2g says this means we should only have a few more to wait now. Not sure if “a few more” implies days, months, light years, or some other measure of time. For now, we’ll just have to sit back and be patient for what should be just a little while longer. Non-A5 iPhone and iPad owners can untethered jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 right now. Source: pod2g |
