CrackBerry Kevin and the $500 clock app misadventure

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 02:27 PM PST

While we often complain about Apple’s over-curation of the App Store, here’s a cautionary tale about what happens when a $500 BlackBerry App World “app” meets a CrackBerry.com founder left alone in Vegas without adult supervision.

I’ll save the back story of how I decided I needed to buy the app for our next CrackBerry Podcast (for now let’s just say I was triple dog dared into it), but buy it I did. And you know what they say, What happens in Vegas ends up on Youtube, so check out the video above to see this Limited Edition desktop clock app get purchased and installed onto my BlackBerry Bold 9900. While at the time of purchase I thought this was the most expensive app in App World, turns out there are quite a few overpriced clock apps in there. And while I’m pretty sure I’m the only person in the world to have bought the Cesar HQ app, looking at the other clock apps I discovered one review by another person on another $600 clock app, so it looks like there is at least one other sucker out there.

Apple yanked the notorious I Am Rich app from the App Store a short time after it launched and has made it a policy not to allow similar apps since. While RIM evidently doesn’t enforce similar restrictions, and it was nice of Kevin to single-handily double App World sales last night, bottom line, Adam is never allowed leaving Vegas before Kevin does again.

iPad 3 on schedule for March release, might include quad-core chipset, LTE

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 01:48 PM PST

iPad 2 hero

Bloomberg is reporting that Apple has begun production of the iPad 3 for an expected March 2012 release.

[iPad 3] will sport a high-definition screen, run a faster processor and work with next-generation wireless networks, according to three people familiar with the product. [..] The tablet will use a quad-core chip, an enhancement that lets users jump more quickly between applications, two of the people said.

The March date is spot on, and the 2042×1536 Retina display screen is an easy bet at this point. Apple could go quad-core with the A6 chipset as competing tablets have recently done, but Apple’s integrated hardware/software approach has thus far let them do more with less.

LTE still feels like a wildcard to me. While Verizon has better deployment and AT&T is starting to ramp up, Sprint and T-Mobile are behind and international carriers are hit and miss (and just like 3G GSM, frequencies are not always compatible).

The Retina display and A6 alone will make for a compelling upgrade, but for those in LTE areas, it could make it a no brainer.

Why I don’t recommend glowing Apple logo mods for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 01:44 PM PST

There’s been a lot of companies lately selling glowing Apple logo mods for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. While they may look extremely cool and make your iPhone stand out from the rest, you should also take into consideration how these work and the potential risk they pose to the functionality of your device.

First we will state the most obvious – it will completely void your Apple warranty. Opening your device in any unauthorized way will void your factory warranty with Apple. So if your device is still in warranty, I’d stray away from this.

If your iPhone is out of warranty, there’s still concerns to consider. Accelerated battery drain will be an issue. While many of these companies claim there is minimal draw on power, there is still extra power being consumed. An extra light source will always pull power. So yes, you will see more battery drain than without the modification installed.

My biggest concern is how these light mods actually function. They use the existing circuitry in your iPhone to draw power, specifically the LCD cable. This is where the glowing panel pulls power from. Not through the battery but by pulling power through a connector that is already being utilized for something else. In this case, your screen. There have already been reports of washed out LCDs due to glowing mods.

I also don’t recommend putting stray components in your device that aren’t held down in an appropriate fashion. Your device is designed to pull the correct amount of power from the battery. Your logic board is also designed to handle hardware a specific way. In a worst case scenario, you could potentially short out your logic board.

There’s too much room for error with these types of products and not enough information on them. Not to mention the error that can take place if you don’t have any idea what you’re doing when installing these modifications. You could end up breaking another component in the process, or even worse, break a connector off the logic board. Until a modification can be created that pulls power directly from the battery opposed to using existing circuitry, I won’t be giving my thumbs up.

Apple leases 215,000 square feet of office space in Sunnyvale, CA

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 12:43 PM PST

Renderings of Apple's new proposed Cupertino headquarters/mothership

Apple is reportedly leasing around 215,000 square feet of office space in a research and office complex in Sunnyvale, CA. It’s rumored that Apple is aiming to acquire around 700,000 to 800,000 total square feet in that area. That much space is enough to accommodate over 3,000 Apple employees. The space in Sunnyvale is less than 15 minutes from their current headquarters in Cupertino.

As Apple continues to grow it’s quite obvious they’ll need more space. This makes me wonder what is happening with their updated plans for a redesigned Cupertino campus. Sunnyvale has become somewhat of a hotspot for technology companies. We could just rule it as Apple leasing a space that’s not only convenient but in a good location as well.

OnStar’s RemoteLink App slings remote directions to your car, keeps tabs on fuel

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 12:38 PM PST

When Chevy finally launched the Volt plug-in hybrid electric car, they also kicked out an app with in-car communications and monitoring subsidiary OnStar to integrate owners’ mobile phones with the vehicle. Similar to the MyFord Mobile app that Ford put out to integrate with their own Focus Electric, OnStar RemoteLink being shown off at CES 2012 hooks into the OnStar system onboard the vehicle, allowing the owner to remotely monitor the fuel levels, and in the case of the Volt, also check in on how the battery is charging, plus set off-peak charging schedule. RemoteLink also can plan routing on the phone and send it remotely to the car, saving you time the time of generally tedious address inputting when in the car.

The OnStar App is available for iPhone and Android phones and is compatible with most 2010-and-newer GM vehicles with OnStar.

Apple posts Supplier Responsibility progress report

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 12:14 PM PST

Apple has just posted their annual Supplier Responsibility Progress Report. The report aims to help improve worker protections and factory conditions as well as show audit information for the year. The report outlines how their audit procedure is performed as well as shows results for audits in 2011.

Apple also posted a list of the 156 suppliers that make up over 95% of their supply chain. The main focus of the report is to highlight their continued efforts to improve work conditions and tighten down on underage labor.

Apple-designed training programs have educated more than one million supply chain employees about local laws, their rights as workers, occupational health and safety, and Apple's Supplier Code of Conduct.

Apple is also offering educational programs for workers to improve their business skills as well as learn more about entrepreneurship.

Third Rail Mobility shows off Slim Case and Universal Smart Battery for iPhone

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 07:17 AM PST

Third Rail Mobility has made an iPhone case that allows you to not only keep extra power around, but actually swap batteries when and as needed. The ability to change batteries is a feature Apple has never provided for the iPhone but something traditional smartphone users from other platforms have often depended on to have enough power with them on the go. While there are tons of places to recharge now, and a variety of battery cases, dongles and more, if you’re going to be away from power for a long period of time, swappable battery can still be the best solution. Thanks to Third Rail Mobility, it’s available for those who really want it for the iPhone now as well.

Check out the video above, shot live at CES 2012, to see it in action.

iPhone 4S store sales cancelled in Beijing and Shanghai due to crowd trouble

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 12:59 AM PST

Apple has postponed selling the latest iPhone 4S in some stores in mainland China after crowd disturbances spoilt its launch day. The main trouble appeared outside of the Apple Store in Sanlitun Beijing.

Would-be customers, many of whom had waited over night in the freezing cold to be among the first to purchase the latest iPhone, became so unruly when the store failed to open its doors on-time that Apple was forced to cancel first-day sales there. And rather than risk a repeat of the incident — which ended in profanity, egg-throwing and a few scuffles, the company has decided not to sell the 4S at any of its retail stores in Beijing and Shanghai. Instead, it will sell the device through its Web site and carrier partners.
It is thought that the crowds were made up of many  scalpers looking to buy as many iPhone 4S models as they can. They are then resold for a profit. Apple told All Things D that the demand for the iPhone 4S in China had been incredible. Apple will not sell the iPhone 4S in its Beijing and Shanghai stores for the time being; but it will still be available online.

Ford shows off updated Sync integration for iPhone

Posted: 13 Jan 2012 12:31 AM PST

Ford has quite the presence at CES 2012. From the slick Evos concept car to the upcoming Focus Electric (with nice mobile app integration) and 2013 Ford Fusion, Ford has a strong showing (which is impressive, when you consider that the Detroit Auto Show is also this week). In addition to the mobile integration going with the Focus Electric, Ford’s moving forward full stream with their in-car infotainment system Sync. Powered by Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Automotive operating system, Sync has been leading the in-car media game for a few years now, and the latest version naturally kicks things up another notch. Sync integrates with BlackBerry, iPhone, and Android devices, allowing a driver to control apps on the device with a combination of voice commands, steering wheel controls, and the center stack and touchscreen.

App Giveaway: Run Roo Run HD for iPad

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 11:40 PM PST

Run Roo Run HD is a platformer game where you, a kangaroo, must avoid obstacles by jumping, swinging, riding clouds, and launching from cannons. Each level is a single screen, not scrolling.

This is a great little game, but the main levels are not very challenging. It took me less than an hour to complete the main levels in all 20 chapters. The extreme levels, however, are very difficult – some even too difficult, in my opinion. Even though I didn’t feel particularly challenged, I enjoyed playing the game – I was able to casually play while watching an episode of Battlestar Galactica!

Your joey has been captured and you need to get him back!

Hop, skip, and jump your way across tons of unique and interesting obstacles in the Australian outback! Run Roo Run is a micro-platformer featuring single screen levels filled with unique, fun obstacles and easy to learn one-touch gameplay. Play for a few minutes, or a few hours; your journey to Sydney always picks up where you left off!

  • Over 420 Levels!
  • Get 10 new free levels every week!
  • Over 100 extreme levels!
  • Leaderboards
  • Achievements
  • Full Retina Graphics Support!
  • GameCenter Support
  • Easy to learn one-touch gameplay
  • Fun power-ups including – human cannons, tire swings, ridable clouds, gravity defying umbrellas, invisibility, and much more!

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 11:09 PM PST

Frequencies is an iPhone app that let’s you look up and store the frequencies to your favorite radio stations.

Top 10 best alarm tones to make sure you wake up in the morning

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 09:09 PM PST

If you have ever found yourself pressing the snooze button too many times on your iPhone in the morning, then here are best alarm tones to ensure you get up right away. They’re all YouTube clips, but you can easily sample sounds from youtube and turn them into custom tones all your own.

  • Jaws Theme. Not sure if this is actually the scariest sound in the world, but it will definitely make you decide pretty fast to get ready for work.
  • Halloween theme song.
  • Big Bang Theory. Probably the scariest of them all. Howard’s Mom can get anyone up.

-The Grudge. I didn’t actually find this sound particularly scary but it seemed to frighten everyone else. You take a listen and let me know what you think.

  • and trepidation.

  • Jokers Laugh, The Dark Knight. Eerie.

I did try the popular Friday the 13th theme three times but without the man in the Shatner mask chasing after you, the music ends up being more relaxing than terror-inducing. If you know of any other alarm tone that are guaranteed to get you out of bed and up to face the day, let us know in the comments below.

Daily tip: How to text message multiple photos at once

Posted: 12 Jan 2012 09:08 PM PST

Ever wondered whether or not you can text message multiple photos at once? The answer is yes. Sending them individually is annoying and time consuming. And why when your iPhone easily allows you to send multiple photos at once? This will not only work for text messaging but for e-mailing photos as well.

Although you can send multiple images at once there is still a few caveats that we’ve found. The first being that you can only send a certain number at once. In most instances, this seems to be five. It also may depend on the size of the photos you’re trying to send. You can also only send one video message at a time (for now anyways).

To text multiple images at once, follow these easy steps –

  1. Open your Photos app and hit the arrow in the upper right hand corner.
  2. Now you should see a few new options along the bottom – Share, Copy, Add To (only in iOS 5), and Delete
  3. Tap on the photos you would like to SMS and then click Share. If you’re tapping on too many, the Share option will be greyed out.
  4. Once you’ve tapped Share you’ll be presented with a few options. Tap Message to send them via text.
  5. Your message app will automatically open. Just type in the name of the person you want to send them to and click Send.

That’s it! All your photos will be sent to the recipient. They will receive them as separate messages but this method seems to be a lot easier than tapping each photo individually.
