5 years ago today, Apple re-invented the phone Posted: 09 Jan 2012 04:55 PM PST 5 years ago today, Steve Jobs took to the Macworld 2007 stage and introduced 3 new products — a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a breakthrough internet communicator. An iPod, a phone, an internet communicator. We got it. They weren’t 3 seperate devices. They were one device. They called it iPhone.

iOS 5.1 beta 3 restores 3G data toggle in Settings Posted: 09 Jan 2012 04:51 PM PST iOS 5.1 beta 3, which was released to developers today, restores the missing 3G toggle Apple removed in the initial 5.1 developer beta. The restoration of the 3G toggle will no doubt be a welcomed return for iPhone users with inadequate 3G access in their area, or for users who just want to conserve a little extra battery life. Still, this makes us wonder why they removed the 3G toggle in the first place. Could Apple be planning to make this optional between wireless networks with a per-network proprietary carrier update file? Thanks: @funguyom! |

Acer, Samsung announce iCloud, Photo Stream, AirPlay competitors Posted: 09 Jan 2012 01:04 AM PST It seems Acer and Samsung didn’t even wait for CES 2012 to officially start before announcing AcerCloud, PicStream, and SwipeIt, or basically what Apple announced in 2011. Acer was up first with a service called AcerCloud that sounds suspiciously like iCloud, even substituting PicStream for Photo Stream. Hmm… And if that’s not enough, Samsung — who have made it something of a habit to copy Apple — have now gone so far as it to create an AirPlay clone called — I kid you not! — SwipeIt. About the only thing left is the race to see who will launch the first real Siri competitor. While third party attempts like Iris, Google’s Majel project, etc. made some early noise, as did fake — and now removed — “Official” Siri for Android apps, it’s only a matter of time before someone like Samsung or Google themselves go all in on a Siri-like service all their own. Imitation is still the sincerest form of flattery, right? Source: Android Central |
Apple’s iPhone prompted Windows Phone redesign Posted: 09 Jan 2012 12:36 AM PST In speaking to the New York Times recently, the man running the show for the Windows Phone software team, Joe Belifore noted how Apple’s iPhone prompted Windows Phone redesign and shaped the future of Microsoft’s mobile operating system. “Apple created a sea change in the industry in terms of the kinds of things they did that were unique and highly appealing to consumers,” Joe Belfiore told The New York Times. “We wanted to respond with something that would be competitive, but not the same.” It really isn’t any secret that Apple’s launch of the iPhone disrupted the mobile industry in many ways, but even today — 5 years after the official unveiling — we’re still finding out just how much of an impact it had. Microsoft at the time was considering their options for what to do with exhausted Windows Mobile platform. With their mobile future now at risk, it was decided in December of 2008 to go ahead and scrap Windows Mobile and start fresh. That meant assembling a new team of engineers, developers and more importantly — someone to lead them all into the next generation of mobile OS’ for Microsoft. That led Terry Myerson, mobile engineering chief to hire Joe Belfiore who had recently been working on the Microsoft Zune projects. Borrowing ideas from the Zune projects, the Metro UI as we now know it was born and early Windows Phone devices were rolled out, providing something many would say was ideas never saw from Microsoft before. Whether you like Apple and the iPhone or not, their influence on every other modern smartphone really is undeniable. Source: NYTimes |
