Sprint CEO: We throttle top 1 percent of data users Posted: 05 Jan 2012 04:41 PM PST Hot off the Dow Jones Newsire comes a report that, according to their CEO Dan Hesse, Sprint is throttling the top 1 percent of data users, including their new iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S subscribers.
Sprint was initially gung-ho about offering unlimited data to iPhone subscribers, so what’s the deal? If they’re throttling data users, then their “Truly Unlimited” network isn’t actually unlimited at all. It sounds as if Sprint may be falling in line with all the other major U.S. carriers — or at least publicly taking steps to get there. Anyone care to take a guess at how long it’ll be before Sprint rids their “unlimited” data plans altogether? Source: Dow Jones Newswire |

iPhone 5 concept designs start up again Posted: 05 Jan 2012 04:40 PM PST Now that iPhone 4S has come and launched, iPhone 5 (or whatever Apple ends up calling the next generation iPhone), concept designs are once again starting to pop up. This one comes from designer Antonio De Rosa, who created the above iPhone concept and has given it the title of iPhone SJ, as it is Steve Jobs inspired. He imagines it having an A6 processor, a 10 MP camera, and a polycarbonate body. I don’t particularly feel that an A6 processor or a better camera are out of the question for the next iPhone. I don’t think polycarbonate would be a bad choice for the body as it’s extremely lightweight. It would allow Apple to create an even larger device and subtract weight. I’m not sure I would want a larger screen as that has its disadvantages too. Overall, I think the design is great but I’m not sold on Apple making a larger screen that would inhibit one-handed use. You can visit ADR Studio’s site for more images of his design. Source: ADR Studio |
Posted: 05 Jan 2012 12:25 PM PST iPhone and iPad are the first mainstream mobile platforms — of geeks and for geeks but not only geeks. Apple and Steve Jobs worked relentlessly to make computing more mainstream and more accessible, and they’ve succeeded. For some, iPhones and iPads are still the traditional mobile devices — letting us stay in touch and get things done on to go. But they’re also more — they let us do everything from gaming to photography to music to medicine in ways never before possible. Because of that, beyond simply buying a phone or learning how to use a tablet, our community has grown to encompass so much more. From concept to realization to rapid expansion, as Apple announced the iPhone, as they made it manifest, as they added iPod touch, Apple TV, and iPad to the iOS family, we’ve gone from Phone different to theiPhoneblog to TiPb. We’ve endeavored to bring you more of what you care about — news, reviews, how-tos, apps, accessories, podcasts, videos. Everything. You’ve seen some of that already. In addition to our flagship iPhone and iPad Live podcasts, shows that have always brought you the very best news and industry opinion, we’ve added Iterate for mobile designers, ZENandTECH to help center our inner geeks, Stock Talk and Enterprise for those in the markets and in IT, and we have more great new shows to come. We’ve started running developer spotlights, like DVD extras for the apps you love, and our Weekly Mods that show you how to change batteries, cameras, screens, and fix your own gadgets, and we have more great columns to come. We’ve started new iPhone and iPad in action forums, so you can discuss and get help with everything from videography to eBook reading to food spotting, and much, much more. Steve Jobs believed that Apple stood at the crossroads of technology and liberal arts. We believe our community stands right there with them. More than technology, more than devices, we’ve come to lead mobile lives. We’ve come to do and need more. And with this new, faster, lighter, and more flexible site design, and more encompassing and meaningful name, we’re going to bring you even more. More news, more reviews, more how-tos, more apps, more accessories, more shows. More everything. iMore. |
iMessage bug prevents SMS from getting through to Android switchers Posted: 05 Jan 2012 09:21 AM PST TechCrunch is helping shed light on an iMessage bug that’s causing problems for iOS users trying to send SMS messages to ex-iPhone users who have switched to another platform, such as Android. What happens is, the iPhone attempts to send the SMS to the ex-iPhone user as an iMessage — just like it always did before the recipient switched devices. But since Android doesn’t support iMessage, the text ultimately fails. Simple, if naive solution:
Complicated, if realistic solution:
According to a tipster in Apple’s support forums, this should resolve the issue entirely. Unfortunately, this is just one of several iMessage related bugs we’ve been tracking lately. New service or not, Apple needs to get on top of this so users don’t have to go through steps they ought not have to go through. Source: Apple Support Communities via TechCrunch |

App Giveaway: Triple Entendre for iPhone and iPad Posted: 05 Jan 2012 06:23 AM PST Triple Entendre is a riddle and puzzle game for iPhone and iPad. Each level is a combination of text, photos, and other clues that provide hints to the answer or even the question. Most questions are intended to require some research, so there’s a built-in browser that makes it easy to switch between the web and the game. I’m a total sucker for riddles and totally addicted to Triple Entendre. It’s extremely challenging and half the time I’m cursing my iPad for my wrong answers, but boy does it feel good to pass a level. If you’re looking for hints on the levels, we’ve got a thread in our forums dedicated to asking and giving hints for Triple Entendre.
GiveawayThe good folks at The Van Buren Boys have given us some promo codes to give away to 5 lucky readers! For a chance to win, just solve the following riddle and leave your answer in the comments below: Which two days in a week starts with “T” other than tuesday and thursday? Go! Triple Entendre is available on the iPhone and iPad for $0.99. There is also a lite version available for free.

Fullscreen app demonstrated on the Apple TV [Jailbreak] Posted: 05 Jan 2012 06:22 AM PST Following the hack that allows fullscreen apps to run on the Apple TV, developer Jack Perry, known as @Jackoplane on Twitter, decided to try porting his own apps to the bigger screen.
The tweet was followed up by Steven Troughton-Smith showing the app running at full 720p on an actual Apple TV.
The app, Frequencies, is a simple internet radio tuner, but demonstrates how the idea of fullscreen apps might work on the Apple TV. And it’s really quite exciting. Source: @stroughtonsmith, @Jackoplane, Jackoplane Blog |

More details emerge on the upcoming iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak Posted: 05 Jan 2012 03:26 AM PST Pod2g has decided to share a little more information on the hopefully soon to be released iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak. In a blog post, pod2g has answered a couple of questions that may have been on your mind as you await its release. One of the questions is how he has managed to get an untethered 4S and dev teams still haven't released tools to achieve this at home? The exploit I used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account, and can't be released publicly. It's the same reason why @MuscleNerd has an iPad 2 tethered jailbreak but couldn't distribute it. So, we need to find a distributable exploit to remount the system partition read/write and to set Corona files at the correct places. It looks like the jailbreak may not be as imminent as we expected. Until this last hurdle is out of the way, it can't be released publicly. We will let you know as soon as we hear anymore. Source: Pod2g Blog |

Verizon sold 4.2 million iPhones last quarter Posted: 04 Jan 2012 09:06 PM PST Bloomberg reports that Verizon Wireless sold 4.2 million iPhone units during the last quarter.
This will no doubt reflect well on Apple’s next quarterly earnings call scheduled for January 24th — which is also, as usual, predicted to be their highest quarter in terms of revenue. Source: Bloomberg |
