Lock Screen Weather app adds weather to the iPhone Lock screen Posted: 29 Dec 2011 03:29 PM PST Lock Screen Weather is a clever app that allows you to display local weather information and graphics on the iPhone Lock screen without requiring a jailbreak.
The way it works is by playing a silent track through the iPod app, then using the album art for the track to display the weather based on locations you set within the app settings. Because of the dynamic abilities of how album art is displayed in the iPod app, and subsequently shown whenever you lock your iPhone or iPod touch, this app essentially tricks the iPhone into displaying updated Lock screen weather without breaking any of Apple’s strict developer guidelines. The only drawback is, whenever you have the app running to display weather on the Lock screen, you won’t be able to listen to any music from the iPod app (or any other App Store app that uses audio output or album art, such as Pandora). This is, however, a very adept workaround and gets the job done without the need to jailbreak and install apps like IntelliscreenX.

Alli’s most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011 Posted: 29 Dec 2011 03:28 PM PST If you look at my iPhone and iPad home screens, you see almost nothing in common. You might think they were owned by two different people. I use them very differently, so have different top apps for each. For the purpose of this year’s most-used apps list, I’m limiting myself to the overall top 5 in no particular order. (It’s enough I was able to limit to five!)
Holiday AlarmHoliday Alarm is dependable enough to wake me every morning for school. It wakes me with the iPod tune of my choice – without my having to remember to make it the active app before going to bed at night. It’s programmable, so you don’t have to worry about being woken up on national holidays, and you can add in (or remove) additional holidays as fits your personal schedule. I love how I can set it once so that it will wake me early the 2nd weekend of every month for drill. Can’t ask for more.
Bejeweled BlitzBejewled has been my favorite game since the Palm days. It just gets better, and the latest update is just the Blitz version that pits you against your Facebook friends. A universal app, I play it more now on my iPad than iPhone, but haven’t removed it from my iPhone!
DataVaultEver get to the bank to deposit a check, only to discover that not only do you not have a savings deposit slip, but don’t remember what your account number is? I hate to admit the number of times this has happened to me. Or the number of times I show up in someone’s classroom to fix their computer, to discover that the latest master password has slipped my remembery. I don’t worry about it with DataVault. It remembers everything for me, and syncs to both my Mac and Windows desktop. Did I mention that the next update will have iCloud support so that my iPad and iPhone will sync to each other automagically?
Flipboard was made for the iPad, and while I’m not crazy about it on the small screen of the iPhone, I now get 90% of my news from my Flipboard sources. It’s beautiful, it’s timely, and it’s always with me.
PhotoSyncI like having total control over my photos, whether they originated on my iPhone, or I loaded them to a computer from a digital SLR camera. PhotoSync gives me that control, and more. I can transfer photos and video from/to my iPhone, iPad, desktop easily and quickly. So much more than my Photo Stream!

2011 TiPb Readers Choice Awards Posted: 29 Dec 2011 12:46 PM PST The TiPb Nation picks their favorite stories and new or majorly updated apps and accessories of 2011!Your votes have been counted. The results have been tallied. This is it, TiPb Nation! These are your 2011 Readers Choice Award winners
iOS device of the year: iPhone 4SBy the narrowest of margins, the iPhone 4S edged out the iPad 2 as your favorite new iOS device of 2011.
iOS feature of the year: SiriIn another tight race, Siri won a hotly contested race against Notification Center. While some felt Siri’s iPhone 4S exclusivity should have excluded it from entry, multitasking, video recording, and other now widespread features all debuted as iPhone exclusives at some point.
Epic fail of the year: Netflix meltdownIn our third hotly contested category, Netflix raising their rates, splitting their services, renaming one division Qwikster, changing their minds about renaming one division Qwikster, and overall plain batcrap craziness this year beat out the lack of iPhone redesign as the most epic fail of the year. Wow.
Arts & Entertainment app of the year: InstagramOut of all the photography, video, and music apps this year, and after briefly falling behind Snapseed in the voting, you picked the smash hit, filter flying, social sharing photo app, Instagram, as your favorite. No wonder it has so many users.
Productivity app of the year: iWork for iPhoneEven Instapaper 4′s makeover wasn’t even to hold Apple’s triple iPhone threat of Keynote, Numbers, and Pages, all newly ported to iPhone and amped up to support iCloud document sync.
Social networking app of the year: TweetbotTweetbot just barely managed to take the win from the controversial Twitter for iPhone redesign that we bloggers detested but you readers really seemed to like.
Casual game of the year: Tiny WingsThere was nothing casual about Tiny Wings‘ win over Cut the Rope: Experiments — it barely outran daylight to claim this prize.
Hardcore game of the year: Real Racing 2Always one of the first apps to adapt to the latest Apple hardware, like iPad 2, and software, like AirPlay mirroring, Real Racing 2 crossed the finish-line ahead of even Infinity Blade II-level competition.
Jailbreak app of the year: SBSettings for iOS 5Barely a tap ahead of the equally convenient BiteSMS app for jailbreak, your favorite this year was the newly iOS 5 updated versions of… SBSettings!
iPhone case of the year: Otterbox ReflexBy only a few precious votes, the Otterbox Reflex case for iPhone claimed the prize over Lifeproof.
iPad case of the year: DODOcaseEven the magnetism of Apple’s own SmartCover couldn’t stop the newly redesigned DODOcase from winning your favorite iPad protection prize this year.
iPhone and iPad accessory of the year: Jawbone ERAWhile the Wacom Bamboo Stylus took an early lead in our general accessory category, the power of the Jawbone ERA Bluetooth Headset ultimately could not be denied. |
Chris’s most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011 Posted: 29 Dec 2011 12:40 PM PST I tend to go through phases where I can continually change the apps I have on my home page, and the apps I use the most. There are however five apps that will never leave their prime positions. These are my most-used apps, the ones I can’t function without, the ones I use everyday, over and over again.
TweetbotI love Twitter, it has opened up a whole new world for me, I have friends on Twitter from all over the planet that share my interests. Tweetbot is in my opinion the most elegant and user friendly of all the Twitter apps available on the App Store. Every time I open it, it makes me smile, the subtle sound effects and smooth sliding animations are really well done. It may lack a few features compared with other apps but I would rather give them up just to use this app, it is that good! $2.99 – App Store link HulloMailOne of the frustrations of moving your iPhone from the O2 network in the UK, is that it is currently the only network to support Visual Voicemail. Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange and 3 all skipped this really nice feature. So what are your options? Well HulloMail does a really good job of filling the gap. It is basically Visual Voicemail with loads more additional features. The HulloMail iPhone app offers an easy way to manage your voicemails visually, send, receive and share voicemails, instant voice messaging to mobile and email, no matter which operator you use. There are two versions of HulloMail, a free version which is ad supported and a paid version which costs $8.99 a year via in-app subscription. The subscription version gives you some extra features like an ad-free service for a year, individual greetings, longer voicemails of up to 5 minutes and priority access to more features in the coming months. If your network does not support visual voicemail, give HulloMail a try, it is an excellent voicemail management tool.
ReederBeing a news editor for TiPb means I have to keep on top of the news at all times. I use Google Reader on my notebook but when I am mobile, I use Reeder. It is super clean, super fast and really easy to use. Of course it syncs with Google Reader too so I never have to read anything twice. I use it on my iPhone 4S as well as Reeder for iPad on my iPad 2. Both work equally well with speed being the key ingredient.
Air VideoAir Video is a fantastic app that can transcode and stream video content from your Windows PC or Mac straight to your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. It now includes AirPlay support so you can beam all your content onto the big screen too. Your Windows PC or Mac needs a small piece of software installed to communicate with your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad but once setup you can stream native iOS video content (MP4 and M4V) instantly to your device (rather than having to sync it over first via iTunes). Air Video will also convert non-supported video formats (AVI, MKV, etc) and either store them for later viewing or stream them on the fly so you can watch now rather than having to wait. Air Video is an excellent app that gives me instant access to over 2TB of media on my networked drives. There are two versions, a free version which limits the number of displayed items in each folder and the paid version which removes those limits. Both versions are universal apps; so work great on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
LiveScoreLiveScore is a fantastic free app that provides real time scores from many sporting events around the world; with a particular emphasis on soccer scores. Every match in the UK league is covered along with most other countries. With this app you will know about goals, yellow cards, red cards, substitutions, you name it, seconds after they happen. The application comes directly from LiveScore Ltd., the inventors of real-time delivery of live sport data and owners of the no.1 ranked football / soccer web site globally. No country restrictions either, fast access to scores and it is a universal binary too.

Seth’s most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011 Posted: 29 Dec 2011 12:09 PM PST These are Seth’s most used apps of 2011. Others have their own most used apps, but these are Seth’s.
TweetbotI’ve come to rely on Twitter for far more than the occasional distraction from my day, and Tweetbot has been the only app to deliver all the features I want in a package I like to look at. With support for TweetMarker syncing between clients, it’s become my go-to place for news, conversation, and everything else Twitter has to offer.
KindleWith a bigger selection than iBooks and a library I can share easily with my wife, the Kindle app is my reader of choice. Kindle delivers apps on almost every other platform you can think of, perfect syncing of reading position, and a simple, clean reading environment of which I never seem to tire.
1PasswordCouldn’t run the office without it. I store everything in this app: passwords, software licenses, notes, screenshots of web pages – and so on. Absolutely the most indispensable app on my Mac, and always with me on my iPhone.
InstacastThe winner in the great podcast client war of ’11. I’ve tried almost everything available, and Instacast, though not perfect, is the best client for my needs, which consist of downloading podcasts quickly and playing them with minimal physical interaction required on my part. The addition of iCloud syncing and the appearance of Instacast HD late in the year definitely helped cement its place on my phone.
PandoraThis seemingly ancient app (in App Store years) is still one of my favorites. There are a million different music services on iOS, and there’s something for everyone. But more often than not, all I want to do is hit play and let the app do the work, and Pandora still works better than most other things for me. Again, my wife and I share an account, so we are always discovering new stuff based on what the other person’s given a thumbs-up to, and the removal of the 40-hour free account listening limit is the icing on the cake.

Verizon to begin charging $2 fee for online and phone payments Posted: 29 Dec 2011 10:30 AM PST Our sibling site Android Central has confirmed that, beginning January 15th of 2012, Verizon Wireless will start charging a $2 fee for bills paid online or over the phone.
Neither AT&T nor Sprint charge similar fees for bills paid online or over the phone. With AT&T there is, however, a small fee for paying a bill through a customer service representative by phone instead of by IVR (interactive voice response). This may put a few subscribers off a bit. Andrew’s most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011 Posted: 29 Dec 2011 08:43 AM PST My most-used apps of 2011 consist of some of Rene’s favorites, and for good reason. Like Rene and Leanna, I’d also prefer to list some of the great default apps included in iOS like Mail, Reminders, Safari Browser for iPhone and iPad etc., but that would just be boring. Instead, here’s a list of some of the most-used iPhone and iPad apps I spent the majority of my time with this year.
ReederReeder is how I consume my news day in, day out — it’s really as simple as that. It’s one of, if not the best news and RSS feed readers available for the iPhone and iPad (there is also a Mac version available in the Mac App Store). Reeder incorporates a stylistic ZEN-like design with multi-touch gestures making news consumption something I consider to be fun, when previously I used the default Google Reader webapp layout from the browser — and I think we all know what kind of experience that can be like. With Reeder, I can jump in and jump out and get the job done quickly and efficiently, while also having a fluid experience at the same time. I prefer the iPad app, but when I don’t have my iPad handy, the iPhone app is top-notch and has the same look and feel of its iPad counterpart. If you’re looking for a better way to consume news, look no further than Reeder for the iPhone and iPad.
NetflixNetflix has definitely been a lifesaver for me on more than one occasion. Whenever I’m out and about or just at home in bed dying of boredom, I whip out my iPad and jump into the Netflix app to watch my favorite TV shows, movies or documentaries. The great thing about Netflix is the content, in that it has the best-of-the-best content (at least in my opinion) and beats out competitors like Hulu with ease. They’ve recently updated the iPad app with a better layout, making it easier to navigate to your favorite content and start streaming away. Diving into what I love to watch and forgetting about my worries wouldn’t be possible in certain scenarios without Netflix on my iPad 2, and even when I forget to pack up my iPad with the rest of my gear, I always have access to the content they provide via my iPhone 4.
Tweetlogix for TwitterI know there are a number of really great Twitter apps out there, but my personal favorite is definitely Tweetlogix for the iPhone. Developed by Onloft Software, Tweetlogix is probably one of the fastest Twitter apps I’ve ever used, which is probably of the main reasons I ended up switching back to Tweetlogix from Echofon Pro in the middle of the year. I wouldn’t be able to say it’s a straight-split between the two, because Tweetlogix excels in too many places where other Twitter apps are simply lacking. You have the ability to adjust font size, view inline images in your stream, mute people you follow who you don’t want cluttering up your stream, and a whole lot more. And again, when I say this app is fast, I mean it’s really fast. Sending a tweet — even over 3G or edge — takes what seems like milliseconds. Just tap the ‘Tweet’ button and you won’t have to deal with the dreaded loading wheel ever again!
NavigonI’ve been using Navigon as my main GPS app all year, and then some. It’s one of the best GPS navigation apps available for the iPhone and can even run on the iPad 3G. Navigon provides quick access to Google search, subsequently making it a breeze to search for your desired location (restaurant, gym, grocery store, gas station, whatever) and it also offers in-app purchases for things like 3D terrain mapping in a panoramic view, live traffic and even police radar location information. I’m sure some of you have personal prefecences for other GPS apps, or maybe even prefer a standalone device, but for me, Navigon does the job perfectly.
EvernoteWant to make sure you never forget anything? Enter Evernote, the best note-taking app available for the iPhone and iPad. Just snap a photo of whatever you need to remember, add a label, tag or just leave it blank, and you’re good to go. Evernote will sync that information across all your iOS devices (even your Mac!) making it easy to access no matter where you are or what you’re doing, and they update the app with added value and additional features on a regular basis. Although the layout has changed significantly over the past couple of years since its debut in the App Store, the basic concept remains the same. iChadman put together a great How To on getting things done using Evernote, and after going through some of the pro-tips in that post, it’s easy to see why Evernote is one of the best apps for getting things done (and remembering things, too!).

SiriPrefs adds even more functionality to Siri [jailbreak] Posted: 29 Dec 2011 07:53 AM PST If you jailbreak you may soon be able to add even more functionality to Siri via SiriPrefs. While A5 devices aren’t jailbreakable yet, jailbroken A4 devices have the ability to run Siri via the Spire port. It appears that SiriPrefs is utilizing Bing as the search function. Saying commands like Bing About will bring up the About page under Settings. SiriPrefs is still in its developmental stages and doesn’t yet have an ETA for release. I’m not personally crazy about how it has to launch Safari in order to navigate to Settings but it’s necessary. It’s very similar to how Jeff Broderick accomplished shortcuts but through the use of Siri instead of homescreen shortcuts. One cool thing to point out is that iPhone 4S users shouldn’t even have to be jailbroken to utilize SiriPrefs once it’s released. If we hear about a release, we’ll let you guys know. In the mean time, check out the demonstration video above. Source: iPhoneIL |
60beat GamePad looks to bring a console type controller to the iPhone and iPad Posted: 29 Dec 2011 07:11 AM PST 60beat has just launched its GamePad controller which it hopes will make gaming on an iOS device much closer to a dedicated console experience. The game content available to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices is now huge however the use of on-screen touch controls remains a major problem for many gamers. With proprietary technology that uses the headphone jack as the interface, the 60beat GamePad significantly improves the iOS gaming experience by moving the controls from the screen to a fully-featured hand-held game controller. Developed to look, feel and operate like widely-used external controllers, GamePad easily and instantly transforms an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch into a game console. The ergonomic design delivers superior comfort and control. Buttons and joysticks are engineered to deliver precise response and the tactile sensations gamers expect. The controller which is available to order now will cost $49.99; so it is not a cheap option. The biggest stumbling block with all of these type of accessories, is getting developer support. So far, the 60beat GamePad has only managed to garner support for two games. Source: 60beat

Ally’s most-used iPhone and iPad apps of 2011 Posted: 29 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST Some of my most-used apps have managed to stay the same year after year, but app updates and new contenders are always finding their way onto my device. While there are tons of great apps in the App Store, these are the apps that currently earn a place on the homescreen of my iPhone or iPad, or even both.
BiteSMSI can not even express how great of an app BiteSMS is. While iOS 5 made several much needed improvements to the messaging app, I still need my quick reply. I desperately miss this functionality on my iPhone 4S and can’t wait for a jailbreak for A5 devices to be released so I can have it back. Until then I’ll have to enjoy using it on my iPod touch.
SBSettingsSBSettings is by far one of the most useful jailbreak tweaks ever created. It’s made my list year after year ever since its conception. I realize how much I miss it every single time I have to launch the Settings app on my iPhone 4S just to change the brightness level on my phone or toggle off wi-fi. If you jailbreak and haven’t picked up SBSettings, what are you waiting for? It’s free.
ReederReeder has been one of my all time favorite apps on both my iPhone and iPad. While apps like Flipboard are great for casual reading, Reeder allows me to read when I want without missing anything. I can set up options for how many days worth of content I want to see when I load it and know I’m still up to date. More importantly, Reeder is a surprisingly beautiful client for one that provides so much functionality. Often times you see a great UI go bad when too many options are added. Reeder is a shining example of an exception to this rule.
Google CurrentsWhile Reeder is the app I’d turn to when I actually want to sit down and catch up on my news for the day, Currents is the app I turn to when I just want to view headlines or pick and choose what I want to read. It has one of the most beautiful interfaces I’ve ever seen in a news app and it really is a joy to browse through, especially from the iPad. I think Currents will give Flipboard a run for its money. I actually already prefer it due to blogs being able to customize how their content is presented.
1Password1Password has a well-deserved spot on every single device or computer I own. Lets face its, most people are terrible at remembering passwords. We all know it isn’t safe to have the same password for everything but who can remember all those passwords? Enter 1Password. Not only does it remember all your passwords or generate impossible to guess random ones for you, it does it across all platforms seamlessly. I have 1Password installed on my iPhone, iPad 2, iPod touch, iMac, and MacBook Pro. Never again will I forget a password or have to worry about not having the one I need nearby. While you can purchase them separately for iPhone and iPad, I suggest picking up the Pro version to cover all your iOS devices. It’s currently on sale for the holidays for only $8.99, down from its normal price point of $14.99.

Zephyr brings multitasking gestures to iPhone [Jailbreak] Posted: 29 Dec 2011 12:52 AM PST Zephyr, by jailbreak phenom chpwn, brings iPad-style multitasking gestures to the iPhone.
Zephyr registers bezel-to-screen swipes, which makes sense given the smaller surface area of the 3.5-inch iPhone vs. 9.7 inch iPad display. While only the 2 gestures listed above are currently supported, anyone already familiar with their iPad counterparts will realize the efficiency boost they can provide. If you’re jailbroken, you can grab it now from Cydia for $2.99.

No Uninstall makes deleting apps from the Home screen impossible [Jailbreak] Posted: 29 Dec 2011 12:16 AM PST No Uninstall is a A jailbreak mod in Cydia that prevents 3rd party apps from being deleted from the Home screen on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
No Uninstall requires iOS 4 or higher (got that wrong in the video — sorry!). You can do this on a stock iPhone via the Restriction Settings, but if you’re running an older version of the OS that doesn’t support the app deletion restriction — or you just want to have some fun at a friend’s expense — give No Uninstall a try.

Rumor: Apple planning to double battery capacity in iPad 3, January release Posted: 28 Dec 2011 09:48 PM PST Hit-or-miss rumor site Digitimes is reporting that Apple plans on doubling the size of the battery in the the iPad 3, and moreover, that Apple will release it as soon as next month.
As always, take these rumors with a Macworld|iWorld expo sized grain of salt. Digitimes‘ “sources” also mentioned that Apple will debut two separate models of the iPad, one for the high-end market and the other filling in the mid-range segment. While 7-inch iPad persist, keeping the iPad 2 around the way the previous year’s iPhone is usually kept around could be another alternative. As to a January launch, that feels more like a rumor designed to hurt current iPad sales than anything fitting Apple’s previous release patterns. Curious how those keep popping up, isn’t it?
