Deck out your iPhone and iPad with holiday wallpaper, music, movies, apps and more!

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 04:54 PM PST

The holidays are upon us and what spreads holiday cheer more than decking out your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad with lots of holiday content? Whether it’s wallpapers, music, movies, apps, or games, it’s easy to make your favorite iOS device the center of your festivus festivities.

Holiday wallpapers

One of the nicest treats for the holidays is a seasonally stylish new wallpaper for your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Our TiPb Forums have a great thread going to find some really nice ones, and share your own. Check it out!

Holiday music

If you already have a ton of holiday music in your collection, why not enjoy it on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad? If it’s on CDs, just load them into your computer and rip them into iTunes. If you’ve ripped them into iTunes already, you can use Home Sharing to stream them to your device, or use iTunes sync or Wi-Fi sync to move them over. If you bought them from Apple’s iTunes Store, you can use iTunes in the Cloud to re-download them right to your device — or iTunes Match if you’ve subscribed! If you’re starting from scratch, you can check out holiday channels on apps like Slacker or just hit up iTunes and buy yourself some classics!

Holiday movies

Whether your favorite holiday movie is Miracle on 34th Street, Elf, or Diehard, curling up with your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad is a great way to enjoy them. If your movie collection is scattered in a bunch of different places and formats on your PC hard-drive, you can use something like Air Video to transcode them on the fly and watch them right on your device or beam them via AriPlay to an Apple TV and your big screen television. If they’re all safe and sound in your iTunes library, again you have Home Sharing to stream them to your device, or iTunes sync or Wi-Fi sync to move them over. No holiday movies to call your own? Find some on Netflix or go straight to iTunes and check out their holiday collection.

Holiday apps and games

When it comes to the holidays, you can bet your last chocolate coin there’s an app for that. In fact, there are many apps for all kinds of thats! From cards to carols, books to bells, cutting ropes to angering birds, cooking to candles, fireplaces to fun with photos, there’s a ton of stuff to keep you busy.

Your favorite holiday stuff?

If you have a favorite holiday wallpaper, music, movie, or app or game, let us know in the comments. We’d love to check them out!

Rumor: iPad 3 coming on Steve Jobs’ Birthday

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 10:31 AM PST

Rumor: Supply chain suggests iPad 3 coming on Steve Jobs' birthday?

Take this one with a 9.7-inch grain of salt, but Focus Taiwan is reporting that current Asian supply chains suggest that Apple might be trying to get the iPad 3 out on February 24th, Steve Jobs‘s birthday.

After the iPhone 4S successfully took the tech market by storm, the iPad3 is widely expected to be Apple's first hit product to be released next year. Industry sources said the first shipment of the iPad3 could exceed 4 million units. Because it is a new gadget, it is taking time for makers in the supply chain to raise their yield rates. The sources said all OEM and ODM makers have exercised great caution in ensuring the smooth operations of their production lines.

A late February launch would likely mean an early February event to show off the new hardware (and new 5.1 or 5.2 version of iOS to go with it?). If you aren’t as skeptical as we are on this one, you probably should be. Supply chain rumors are often more miss than hit, and you’ll probably have just as much luck pegging the iPad 3 release date by flipping a coin.

Steve Jobs to receive special Grammy award for revolutionizing music industry

The Recording Academy has announced they’ll be honoring Steve Jobs with a Special Merit Grammy Award for revolutionizing the music industry based on the massive success of Apple’s iTunes Music Store

As former CEO and co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs helped create products and technology that transformed the way we consume music, TV, movies, and books. A creative visionary, Jobs’ innovations such as the iPod and its counterpart, the online iTunes store, revolutionized the industry and how music was distributed and purchased. In 2002 Apple Computer Inc. was a recipient of a Technical GRAMMY Award for contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field. The company continues to lead the way with new technology and in-demand products such as the iPhone and iPad.

The Academy will be holding a special awards ceremony honoring other visionaries with Lifetime Achievement Awards as well as Technical Grammy Awards on Saturday, February 11th, including a special Trustee Award honoring Steve Jobs for his contributions to the music industry at the official Grammy event the following day.

Vote now for jailbreak app of the year [TiPb Awards]

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 06:24 AM PST

While Apple did their best to Sherlock a ton of jailbreak functionality with iOS 5, the community took it as an opportunity to raise the bar and make even better apps and tweaks in 2011. Some of the updates, like for SBSettings, LockInfo, IntelliscreenX and BiteSMS updated and integrated with spectacular effect.

DreamBoard tried a new take on the old theming engine. aTV Flash brought Jailbreak power to the new, iOS-based Apple TV. And iUsers brought multiple accounts to the iPad.

As always, a group of very different, but very good apps and tweaks, and it’s your job to pick the very best one. Vote up top and tell us why you voted they way you did in the comments! These are your awards, so get to it!

Apple posts support article confirming iTunes Match availability in 17 countries, forgets Brazil

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 11:19 PM PST

Apple has posted a support article to back up its recent, silent roll out of iTunes Match content internationally. iTunes Match has been available in the United States since November but last week some other international countries started to see it appear too.

The support article confirms that iTunes Match is now available across seventeen countries including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. The article also goes on to confirm what content is available through Apple's iTunes in the Cloud service. Interestingly, it forgets to include Brazil, which is the only additional country for which Apple issued an official press release. (Some of the images also show as not found, which is rather un-Apple-like.) Curious.

iTunes in the Cloud allows users to download content they have already purchased through iTunes onto different devices over the air. It covers content such as Music, Music Videos, TV Shows and Books. There is a well laid out table to confirm exactly what is available based on your location.

iOS Jailbreak developer’s take on Android’s user experience

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 09:16 PM PST

iOS Jailbreaker developer's take on Android's user experience

Noted iPhone Jailbreak developer Grant Paul, better known as chpwn, has started the ICS Paper Cuts blog to share his thoughts on user interface and user experience inconsistencies in Google’s latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Android Central‘s Jerry Hildenbrand has responded, agreeing with some of Paul’s complaints and calling him out on others, and Paul has now responded to Hildenbrand’s response as well. It’s a great discussion and an important one and hopefully we’ll see more like it across sites and platforms. UI and UX are iterative processes and criticism is the fuel that feeds iteration.

Consistency is something I’ve harped on as well, both here on TiPb and on the Iterate podcast.

While iOS has more than it’s fair share of UI eccentricities — stitched leather and felt come immediately to mind — it has by and large provided a more consistent experience than Android to date. The same type of control is typically in the same approximate place from one Apple app to another, and many — though certainly not all — iOS designers take pains and pride in following the same conventions. Like chopping wood, or reading repetitive words, it causes the chrome to disappear and interactions to become near frictionless.

Google has stepped up their design game across the board over the last year, but it remains challenged by legacy apps and interface elements, and a culture that traditionally places engineering ahead of design.

2012 represents a new opportunity for both platforms, however, with iOS 6 and Android Jellybean (Jujube? Jaffa cake? Jawbreaker?) on the horizon. Let’s see what they can do.

Meanwhile check out the discussion via the links below.

pod2g hands over A4 untethered jailbreak to focus on A5 devices

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 07:39 PM PST

pod2g has handed over his A4 untethered jailbreak to the Chronic Dev Team in order to concentrate on Apple A5 chipset devices, namely the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. The Chronic Dev Team will test and finish his A4 untether for release as soon as possible.

I need to focus on A5 and hope I can find a path quick, and I have the feeling that chronic-dev could help me. I gave all the details to the chronic dev team so that they can finish, test, integrate and release the A4 jb ASAP. I’ll put all my energy from now on on the A5

This comes after accomplishing an untethered jailbreak for all A4 devices as well as overcoming a cache issue for A5 devices.

There are tons of users on both Apple A4 chipset and A5 chipset devices. While many people are waiting for an A5 jailbreak, A4 users have been waiting even longer. It also makes sense that no jailbreak developer wants to burn an exploit that Apple may patch in iOS 5.1. I see this as being a good scenario and the best option for both A4 and A5 users if it results in jailbreak tools for both even faster.

Vote now for productivity app of the year [TiPb Awards]

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 06:54 PM PST

Apple finally (yes, finally, deal with it) released the iWork apps for iPhone, namely Keynote, Numbers, and Pages. Agenda Calendar brought elegance to our appointments.

Noteshelf made our iPads useful in planning sessions. Elements made Dropbox note-taking sing.

[Orchestra To-Do] (http://www.tipb.com/tag/orchestra-to-do) packed out tasks with functionality. Due made reminders quick and powerful.

Instapaper put everything we wanted to read in our pockets, but better. Screens took iOS back to our Macs.

A ton of very different apps to be sure, but all of them helped us get stuff done, and it’s your job to pick the very best one.

Vote up top and tell us why you voted they way you did in the comments! These are your awards, so get to it!

U.S. Department of Transportation refuses to accept NTSB ban on smartphones in cars

Posted: 22 Dec 2011 05:34 PM PST

NTSB calls for state ban on iPhones and other smartphones in cars

The U.S. Department of Transportation has refused to work with the National Transportation Safety Board’s proposal to ban the use of the iPhone and other smartphones in cars.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said he won’t back a proposal to prohibit drivers from talking on cellphones, even hands-free devices, giving a boost to car makers and mobile-phone companies that stand to lose if regulators impose a ban.

According to our cross-site Mobile Nations network poll, the majority of TiPb, Android Central, and CrackBerry.com readers say there needed to be a middle ground on the issue. Given that most smartphones have the ability to run software designed to support driving tasks, like turn-by-turn navigation, this makes a lot of sense. Still, preventing drivers from performing distracting tasks like sending SMS messages or playing Angry Birds remains an issue.
