That’s it! Crack open a spicy drink, grab a tasty snack, and enjoy! We’ll see you on the big shows!

Vote now for iPad case of the year [TiPb Awards]

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 01:17 PM PST

Apple kicked off the iPad 2 case wars with their magnetically attached SmartCovers. ZAGG added a full-on Bluetooth keyboard to the ZAGGfolio.

DODOCase redid their classic for iPad 2. Pad & Quill took things up a notch with their Contega.

Otterbox added the Reflex to their armored offerings. BodyGuardz added the thin and strong Carbon Fiber.

Incipio kept thing sleek with the Feather Ultra-Light. Case-Mate went with a kick-stand for the Pop!

Yup, that’s a lot of different kinds of cases, but to keep the number of categories sane, we had to it. They all have two things in common, however — they’re all great and you have to pick your favorite. Vote up top and tell us why you voted they way you did in the comments! These are your awards, so get to it!

2011 Holiday Guides: iPad and iPhone gifts for travelers

It’s the last minute and you forgot a gift for that special iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad lover in your life. Here are your choices: a) crash through the upstairs window, drive roll through the flowerbed, hotfoot it to the car, screech out the driveway, hit up the QuickyMart of air fresheners and chocoblocks; or b) check out the list below, tap a few links, type a few words, sit back and wait for the smiles.

Netflix, Hulu Plus, Slacker and other subscription

The real gift that keeps on giving, whether it’s audio or video, a subscription can keep your special someone entertained throughout the year.

iTunes, App Store, iBooks gifts and gift certificates

Top 5 best first-person shooter (FPS) games for iPhone and iPad

If they’ve got all the iOS devices they need, and it’s too late to look into accessories, worry not — content is king of the last minute gifts. Your special someone can never have too many apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, or books to enjoy.

You can either gift them yourself (here are a ton of gift recommendations and best app picks), or better still — get them a gift certificate so they can pick their own treats.

Amazon gift certificates

Apple to launch 7.85-inch iPad in second-half of 2012 to compete with Kindle Fire?

Amazon has a ton of digital content all there own, but they also have old school media — paper books, plastic CDs and Blu-Rays, games that come on cartridges… Gift certificates let them pick just exactly the goods — real or virtual — they want, and Amazon will deliver it straight to their door or their device.

Your last minute gift ideas?

Did we miss any amazing last minute gift ideas? Not that you’ve ever forgotten that special occasion, of course, but if… a friend of yours, let’s say, has had any strokes of gifting genius, please share in the comments!

Santa uses Siri to help make his Christmas rounds

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 11:28 AM PST

Apple has released a new iPhone 4S commercial outlining how Santa uses Siri on the new iPhone 4S to help make his rounds on Christmas.

While Siri is still in beta, and still has plenty of rough edges, Apple continues to make it the staple feature in its advertising campaigns. Whether that troubles anyone or not, the ad itself is very well done. My favorite part is near the end when Santa asks Siri how how the rest of his day looks, to which Siri responds with… Well, watch it and find out!

Facebook for iPhone gets Timeline support, more

Facebook for iPhone gets Timeline support, more

Facebook has updated their iPhone app to version 4.1, bringing Timeline to the mobile app as well as access to friends lists and subscriptions. Here’s the full update log:

  • Access to Mobile Timeline on iPhone (if you already have Timeline). iPad support coming soon.
  • Access to friend lists, subscribers and subscriptions.
  • Faster, better performance.
  • Photos are easier to view, upload and comment on.

We’re hoping these performance updates actually do what they suggest. I’ve run into so much frustration lately when using the Facebook for iPhone app that’s it’s essentially become unusable in some scenarios. Instead, I’ve opted to just use the mobile version in Safari.

You can grab the update now from the App Store or via iTunes app updates.

Apple looking to open an R&D facility in Israel

Posted: 18 Dec 2011 01:50 AM PST

According to a report by Ynetnews, Apple is looking to open a research and development center in Israel. A delegation of Apple representatives headed by VP Ed Frank is currently in the country meeting with high tech companies such as Intel. The new R&D operation will apparently be lead by Aharon Aharon, the former head of Zoran Corporation's R&D center.

Calcalist has also learned that a delegation headed by Apple VP Ed Frank is currently visiting Israel to meet with several high-tech companies. Frank took a tour of Haifa and visited Intel's headquarters in the city's Scientific Industries Center (MATAM). He is examining the north park of the center as a possible location for Apple's center, Calcalist learned.
Apple is interested in this particular area as it is very close to the Technion. The Technion is Israel's Institute of Technology and is proving to be a highly popular site for major tech companies. Already the area is home to Intel, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Qualcomm. The R&D facility is thought to be aimed at developing flash storage technologies for iOS devices and maybe further development of the A5 CPU.

Top 5 best first-person shooter (FPS) games for iPhone and iPad

Top 5 best first-person shooter (FPS) games for iPhone and iPad

Breaking down the best, most must-have first-person shooter (FPS) games to blast and brawl your way through on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad

First person shooters, affectionally initialized as FPS, are some of the most popular games on any platform and iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad are no exception. While control was, and remains and issue — glass multitouch doesn’t provide the same options as a PC keyboard or dedicated gamepad — the graphics, animation, ambiance, music, and intimacy of iOS makes for an incredibly exhilarating experience. From World Wars to space hulks, soldiers to monsters to the walking dead, hand-to-knife combat to blasters, ballistics, and beam weapons there are a plethora of choices available to the hardcore FPS gamer. Here are some of our favorites.

Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation

The latest in a series of games so good you can scarcely believe they’re on your phone, Modern Combat 3 has 13 missions, excellent gameplay, and a truly immersive experience. While an iPhone can never replace a full-on PC, Xbox 360, or Playstation 3 console shooter with all the bells, buttons, and whistles, the gap is definitely closing. And this one you can carry around in your pocket. Universal app – works on both iPhone and iPad.

Dead Space

If you couldn’t guess from the title it’s a space survival/horror shooter with absolutely gorgeous graphics and even better sound and atmosphere. The mood is just perfect and transitions from casual, almost monotonous getting-to-know-the-controls early missions to OMFG-what’s-eating-my-face action with heart-stopping abruptness. Dead Space isn’t on rails; you walk where you want to walk, blast what you want to blast. You do have a guidance mechanism to show you the way, however, which minimizes the frustration of truly open environments.

N.O.V.A. 2

N.O.V.A was the closest thing to getting HALO on the iPhone and iPad, and N.O.V.A 2 takes all that was great about the original and shoots it into orbit and ads even better graphics, creatures, vehicles, maps, and game play. The visual are simply stunning, the controls about as good as you can expect from multitouch, and the action frenetic. Career mode, multiplayer, leader boards — hawt.

RAGE HD

From the mind of the legendary John Carmack and the labs of ID Software, RAGE HD is a post-apolocalyptic world-scorcher of an FPS. On the down side, it’s on rails so you can’t move about freely. On the plus side, it’s got gruesomely gorgeous graphics, Game Center support, crazy extras like Mirror Mode, and is a great way to raise some hell and work out some aggression on your iPhone or iPad. Universal app — works on both iPhone and iPad

Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies

Top 5 best first-person shooter (FPS) games for iPhone and iPad

It’s CoD, it’s zombies, what more really needs be said? Following up on the original Call of Duty: Zombies, this all new, all better sequel pits you and up to three of your friends against the walking dead with an all new interface, in-game chat, and more achievements than you can toss a grenade at. Also includes a top-down arcade bonus. Universal app — works on both iPhone and iPad
