Apple takes steps to obfuscate future iOS device references from nosy bloggers Posted: 12 Dec 2011 03:21 PM PST In the latest iOS 5.1 Beta 2 it looks like Apple has taken steps to start hiding future iPhone, iPad and other iOS device model references from the bloggers and deep code divers who have previously delighted in finding and exposing them. Mark Gurman of 9to5 Mac first noted the new, obviously obfuscating entries on Twitter, and now it seems that in the USBDeviceConfiguration.plist, Apple has thrown in over 100 entries have been added for everything from iPad10,1 to AppleTV9,2, and so on. Interesting new move in the cat and mouse game, to say the least. Source: Mark Gurman |

iOS 5.1 features: Delete individual photos from Photo Stream Posted: 12 Dec 2011 12:08 PM PST The just-released iOS 5.1 beta 2 adds a small but incredibly important feature to iCloud‘s Photo Stream — the ability to delete individual photos. Take a very personal or NSFW photo only to find, horrifically, that it was suddenly part of your Apple TV’s screen saver? Leave your iPhone unattended and suddenly you’ve been junk-bombed on all your devices? No longer… at least if Apple is good enough to leave individual deletion from Photo Stream intact in the iOS 5.1 release version when it’s made public. Here’s hoping. |
iPad 3 on schedule for March/April 2012 release Posted: 12 Dec 2011 11:10 AM PST Randomly accurate rumor site Digitimes claims word from supply chain sources that Apple is on track to release the iPad 3 within the next 3-4 months.
This comes as no surprise to TiPb, as the original iPad first hit the streets in April of 2010, with the iPad 2 following up in March of this year. News that component makers in the supply chain are on target for a March/April release means that Apple isn’t running into any manufacturing issues as previously speculated. The next iPad is also rumored to sport a 2048×1536 Retina display with around 300 ppi, handily beating out the 1024×768 resolution of the current iPad 2. Source: Digitimes |
Apple seeds iOS 5.1 beta 2 for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV to developers Posted: 12 Dec 2011 11:04 AM PST Apple has just made iOS 5.1 beta 2 available to developers to test out on iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple TV. No word yet on what changes, if any are included, but a beta 2 means we’re still waiting on a GM, and then waiting some more on a public release, so we wouldn’t go expecting this to go wide for a while still. Xcode 4.3 Developer Preview 2 is also available now. Anyone notices anything special, let us know. Source: developer.apple.com |

Vote now for Epic Fail of the year [2011 TiPb Awards] Posted: 12 Dec 2011 08:51 AM PST Privacy also took a swift, hard roshambo in the rights this year as everything from Apple’s poorly coded location recording system to Google, Facebook, and Twitter being forced into decade, or double decade privacy oversight, to lack of disclosure surrounding Carrier IQ making headline. On the flip side, the media earned more than their usual share of fail points for once again never missing a chance to linkbait and headline grab at Apple’s expense. Netflix decided to take one the most successful, most loved brands in modern media and jack up the prices without proper PR, then split the company into Qwikster, then not split the company, then… we got lost. Instead of making streaming more solid and reliable — and available internationally — they spun in circles. Twitter likewise decided that poor communications, creating unease and distrust among developers, the #dickbar, and now the #dickapp re-design, and generally putting their user base last is something they’re now big enough not to have to care about. And then there were the patent problems — Apple and Android makers suing each other, Lodsys suing independent developers, and generally everyone taking the tools of innovation and wielding them for consternation. Vote up top and tell us why you voted they way you did in the comments! These are your awards, so get to it!

Apple announces 500 thousand iOS apps, 18 billion downloads Posted: 12 Dec 2011 06:35 AM PST As part of a press release today touting 100 million Mac App Store downloads, Apple also revealed that they now have more than 500,000 iOS apps for iPhone and iPad, and collectively those apps have been downloaded more than 18 billion times — over 1 billion a month now.
Anyone who ever had a Palm Treo or Windows Mobile phone prior to the iPhone knows how expensive, elaborate, and error-prone getting apps on mobile devices used to be. Since Apple made the idea of an on-ever-device, integrated-into-the-OS App Store mainstream in 2008 with iOS 2 (iPhone OS 2), it’s become economical, convenient, and reliable, and standard on every other major platform. There remain challenges, like the inability to handle demos or paid upgrades, but the numbers don’t lie. Congrats, Apple. Source: Apple PR |
Use your iPhone gyroscope to virtually look around Apple’s new Grand Central store Posted: 12 Dec 2011 02:48 AM PST Apple has posted a 360 degree panoramic view of its latest Apple Store which can be found at the famous Grand Central Station in New York. What is so special about this particular photograph is that it is only visible on an iOS device and you can look right around it using your devices built in gyroscope. To see the picture, you will need to visit the Grand Central Apple's store page from your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Select view more photographs and you will see a list of pictures on the right, at the very bottom is one marked 360. Click on it and the picture will open and you will then be able to look around by holding your device and turning around as if you where actually standing on the spot. To see the picture in all its glory using the gyroscope features, you must have an iPhone 4, 4S, iPad 2 or iPod touch 4th Generation; as these are the only models with the gyroscope hardware. This is the first time that Apple has used this type of image on its store pages; it will be interesting to see if it adds similar images to its other stores too. Source: TNW
