App for That: How to sync unread tweets between iPhone and iPad

Posted: 04 Dec 2011 01:44 PM PST

There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, @Bitterblade asks:

I want a twitter app that syncs unread tweets between my iPhone and iPad.

We’re going to switch things up a little this time, and instead of recommending a specific app, we’re going to take a look at a service that can be used between multiple apps. To find out what it is, follow along after the break!

Tweet Marker is a web service that marks your last read tweet. As long as you have the service set up on at least two different Twitter clients, you can free jump between the two apps without losing place of which Tweet you read last. Just enable the feature in the apps settings, and you’re good to go!

Here is a list of Twitter apps that support Tweet Marker:

Bonus: Twitterrific also has a Mac version [$4.99 - Mac App Store link] that supports Tweet Marker.

Anyone else have any App for That suggestions for @Bitterblade? Let him — and all of us — know.

Having trouble finding what you need in the app store? Head on over to our App for That Forum and let us know what you’re looking for. The TiPb community will do our best to find you just the right App for That!

Apple denied injunction against Samsung in the U.S., licensed patent to Nokia and IBM, fighting FRAND with Motorola in Germany

Posted: 04 Dec 2011 01:18 PM PST

Apple

We haven’t really been keeping up with all the myriad legal maneuverings in the ongoing — and going, and going — legal disputes between Apple and accused “copyist” Samsung, as well as other Android manufacturers like Motorola, but there have been some injunctions granted, refused, overturned, and asked for review. If you’re thinking there’s just too much of this stuff and no one cares who’s not a lawyer on one of their payroll, well, fair enough. Here are the highlights/lowlights.

  • U.S. Lucy Koh refused to grant Apple an injunction against Samsung. She felt Apple had a case, but not a strong enough one that monetary damages wouldn’t sufficiently compensate Apple. [Reuters]
  • Sounds like Apple actually licensed one of their precious multitouch patents — the inertial bounce — to IBM and Nokia, and at one point offered to license it to Samsung but no deal could be reached. [The Verge]
  • New Google acquisition Motorola is still going at it with Apple in Germany, with courts unconvinced of Moto’s case, with FRAND issues causing confusion aplenty. [FOSS Patents]

There’s a ton more going on, of course, and if you’re super-interested in the details, just follow the link above.

Girl eyes for the gadget guys

  • After a date, so you wait for the guy to contact you first? How long should you wait? Has SMS and BBM replaced the phone call for pre- and post-date banter?
  • Adult language — is it okay over BBM? SMS? On semi-public sites like Twitter or Facebook? Do I need to keep my timeline clean? What about during a date? Can I go all Samuel L Jackson — or Ashley Esqueda — on them?

Rumor: Apple considering Oregon data center

Rumor: Apple considering Oregon data center

According to OregonLive, Apple is considering another large data center, this one at Prineville site in Oregon.

Those familiar with the discussions say that Apple’s Oregon plans have been in flux while it awaited word on whether there would be adequate electricity transmission in Prineville to meet its needs.

Whether or not Apple settles on the site, and whether it ends up being on the scale of the multi-billion dollar North Carolina facility are unknown. With iCloud and online services like Siri becoming increasingly important to Apple long term strategy, it does make sense they’re looking to expand and add both capacity and redundancy to the services.

Amplify your iPhone with this ceramic handcrafted passive megaphone

Posted: 04 Dec 2011 01:38 AM PST

Italian design company en&is has manufactured a ceramic passive megaphone to use with your iPhone to amplify its sound. If you want to avoid the raft of powered iPhone speaker docks and are looking for something just that little bit different, this could be for you.

The horn like design sits on a thin wooden frame which allows it to float off the table to optimize the sound experience. The iPhone slips into the top of the horn and all you need to do is press play. The megaphone will then passively amplify the sound into the room. It can also be used as a speakerphone if you so wish.

The Megaphone is available in three colors, black, white and gold. The black and white models cost €399 ($540) and the gold comes in at a whopping €599 ($810). It works with every iPhone available and also with the iPod touch if you have it in a case.

There is no doubting that this would make a beautiful addition to your living room. Unfortunately with no way to control the volume or actually charge your device, it is a little limiting.
