Apple vs. HTC: Comma wars

Apple is once again taking exception to the counter-charges HTC is filing in their ongoing legal dispute.

  • Apple denies that its correct name is Apple, Inc. The correct name of Respondent is Apple Inc.

Things are either getting snarkily passive-aggressive, or passive-aggressively snarky:

Siri iPhone 3GS proof-of-concept port shown off

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 02:02 PM PST

Thanks to chpwn and Steve Stroughton-Smith, Ryan Petrich has successfully shown off a proof-of-concept Siri port on iPhone 3GS. It doesn’t work as well as the iPhone 4 Siri port, mind you, but that’s easily overshadowed by the sheer coolness factor.

Whether due to beta-status, server load, Nuance licensing restrictions, or simple product differentiation, Apple has chosen to keep Siri exclusive to the iPhone 4S, so no word on how or when, if ever, this will come to an iPhone 3GS near you.

Nook Tablet hands on: iPad competitor or Kindle Fire catch up?

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 01:41 PM PST

Phil from Android Central is live at the Nook event in New York City and he got his geeky hands on a Nook Tablet already. While the Kindle Fire is getting all the attention — and iPad 2 competitive chatter — Nook has been around for a while and as Phil points out, like Apple but unlike Amazon, Barnes and Noble has a retail presence to help push their gear.

All that being said, Nook Tablet, like Kindle Fire, is aimed differently than iPad, focusing on a cheaper price and easy access to content (at least for people who live in the US). It’s running a heavily skinned, highly customize version of Android Gingerbread (no Honeycomb for you!), and it’s not going to be running Real Racing 2 HD over AirPlay Mirroring any time soon.

Whether it catches on, or catches up to anything approaching iPad 2′s market, much less profit, share is anyone’s guess at this point.

Google+ Pages now open to businesses and brands

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 01:20 PM PST

As promised — or at least as constantly talked about — Google+ has been opened up to businesses and brands so everyone and their enterprise can now get in on the social sharing action:

Google+ has always been a place for real-life sharing, and Google+ Pages is no exception. After all: behind every page (or storefront, or four-door sedan) is a passionate group of individuals, and we think you should able to connect with them too.

For you and me, this means we can now hang out live with the local bike shop, or discuss our wardrobe with a favorite clothing line, or follow a band on tour. Google+ pages give life to everything we find in the real world. And by adding them to circles, we can create lasting bonds with the pages (and people) that matter most.

The Muppets, Anderson Cooper 360, Macy's, BurBerry, Angry Birds and more are already up and waiting for you, and thanks to Direct Connect, your searches can take you right to Google + Pages now as well. Hit the link below for all the details.

Motorola Droid RAZR gets reviewed, or the big Verizon iPhone 4S competitor for today!

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 01:06 PM PST

Phil Nickinson from Android Central has put together a complete Motorola Droid RAZR for your reading — and viewing — pleasure. How does it stack up against the Verizon iPhone 4S, not to mention the 300 million other Android phones released this week?

It’s fast, it’s thin, it’s got a gorgeous high-resolution display, and it’s running the most recent version of Android available (at least for a few more weeks). Motorola has already promised an update to Ice Cream Sandwich. Good camera, and has Verizon 4G LTE data.

May be too large for some; is about the widest phone we’ve used. Battery can’t be removed. Full of preloaded apps that you might or might not actually want.

What’s interesting is that not 12 hours after Motorola announced this bad boy, Google and Samsung obsoleted it with the Galaxy Nexus, so you’ve got to really love Moto’s fine Corellian design aesthetic and Blur UI, or want a new LTE device on Verizon now, now, now, not to wait.

If you do need a new Verizon phone now, and you’re trying to decide between the RAZR and the iPhone 4S, your choice comes down to whether you need LTE or EV-DO rev A (cough!) is good enough, whether you like 4.3-inch screens or 3.5 inch Retina displays are more your thing, and whether you prefer iOS 5, Siri voice control, and the App Store and iTunes ecosystems to Android and the Market?

If you’re having trouble making up your mind, we’ll be putting the RAZR and the iPhone 4S head to head ASAP, so stay tuned!

iOS 5 bug may lead to untethered jailbreak

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 11:23 AM PST

Chronic Dev Team member @pod2g let the jailbreak community know that he’s discovered a new bug in iOS 5 that may allow for an untethered jailbreak in the future.

Hey jailbreaking friends, I’ve found a bug that can untether iOS 5. Don’t expect a release soon, but I’m gonna work hard in it.

Currently, the only way to jailbreak iOS 5 is by tethering your iPhone to your PC or Mac and re-jailbreaking with RedSn0w each time a reboot is needed, which can cause a lot headaches for users on-the-go.

Details are slim, and we still aren’t sure if this will cover the full gamut of iOS devices including the new iPhone 4S. In any case, we’re looking forward to an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 but it appears we’ll have to wait a bit longer. In the meantime you can check out the TiPb Jailbreak guide or head over to our Jailbreak and Unlock forums!

Belkin set to launch a remote camera shutter release for iPhone

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 08:58 AM PST

Belkin is set to release a remote camera shutter controller for the iPhone according to information found in an FCC filing. The small accessory will work over a Bluetooth connection to your iPhone and it can activate the camera shutter or trigger video recording remotely.

The camera remote is set to work exclusively with Belkin's LiveAction app which is already available in the App Store. The camera remote will also come with a detachable iPhone stand to enable you to prop up your iPhone at various angles to capture the best shot. It could come in very handy if you like to take group photographs that you also wish to be included in. This would be a much better option than rushing around after setting the camera’s self timer.

There is no information as to when this may be released or any pricing information at this stage. We will let you know as soon as we hear anything more.

Apple set to change LED backlight design for next gen iPad with Retina display

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 04:10 AM PST

Apple is planning to change its backlight design for the next generation iPad, according to technology news source Digitimes. Vendors have told Digitimes that Apple has been offered two alternative backlight solutions.

With the next-generation iPads expected to adopt LCD panels with resolutions higher than 2048 by 1536, the current single LED light bar designed for the iPad 2 has to be modified in order to maintain or strengthen the brightness of the panels, the sources explained.
The two options appear to involve a single-bar option with dual LED chips inside whilst the other option offers dual-LED light bars. It is believed that Apple will adopt the dual-LED light bar option now that issues with heat dissipation and battery consumption have been solved.
