The New York Times has published Mona Simpson’s eulogy for her brother, Steve Jobs.

None of us knows for certain how long we'll be here. On Steve's better days, even in the last year, he embarked upon projects and elicited promises from his friends at Apple to finish them. Some boat builders in the Netherlands have a gorgeous stainless steel hull ready to be covered with the finishing wood. His three daughters remain unmarried, his two youngest still girls, and he'd wanted to walk them down the aisle as he'd walked me the day of my wedding.

We all — in the end — die in medias res. In the middle of a story. Of many stories.

Heart rending and hopeful, all of it.



Apple has released 3 more iPhone 4S commercials, a second on Siri along with one focusing on the new 8mp, 1080p camera, and one on iCloud.

• iCloud highlights automatic iTunes Music downloads across devices, Documents in the Cloud propagating updates, iBooks bookmarks copying themselves from iPhone to iPad, and Photo Stream taking the pictures from iPhone and popping them into iPhoto.

• Camera shows the fast camera access from the Home screen, pinch-to-digitally-zoom, on-device cropping and red-eye removal, and Twitter integration.

• Siri focuses on “what does may day look like”, pulling up the day’s appointments, “can I walk to the Belvedere Hotel from here”, pulling up Maps and directions, “read me that text”, reading the last last SMS message, and “do you think it will snow today”, bringing up the Weather app.

There are hundreds of thousands of iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad apps for just about everything — so how come the one you need, the one you know just has to be there, is so hard to find? Enter TiPb’s new weekly feature where staff and readers alike sort through the App Store and help you find just the right App for That. This week, Sean asks:

I am a father to a four and a half year old baby girl and keep up with a blog that I created shortly after she was born to chronicle my fathering experiences as well as her forays into the big wide world. I do all this blogging solely from my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. I take pics and video on my iPhone and then write the blog posts on my iPad later in the day. Photos are not an issue as I just mail them to myself and then save them to my camera roll on the iPad, but Videos are the bugger! Is there an app out there that will let you save video to your iPad’s camera roll that you have captured with your iPhone?

Ideally, Photo Stream and iCloud would include the ability to sync videos between devices, but until that happens, we must go to the App Store to find a solution. To see what we found for Sean, follow along after the break!

PhotoSync [$1.99 - App Store link] is exactly what Sean needs! This little gem allows you to share photos and video from one device to another, including your Mac or Windows computer – and it’s super easy to do.

In Sean’s case, he would tap sync on his iPad and select the option to receive photos and video. Then on his iPhone, he’d tap the photo and videos he wants to transfer, and choose to sync them to another device. He’d then select his iPad from the list and start the sync. Once the sync is complete, Sean will find the videos in his iPad’s camera roll.

The transfers rate is up to 2.5MB/sec, so depending on the size of the files, it can take a couple minutes, but syncing will continue in the background while Sean works on his blog post about his daughter.

This really is a fabulous app. I, like Sean, also blog photos and videos of my daughter and am thrilled with the discovery of PhotoSync.

How to watch Flash videos on iPhone or iPad

Apple doesn’t support Adobe Flash video on iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. Often this won’t matter and the video website will realize you’re on an iPhone or iPad and send you H.264/HTML 5 video instead, or if it’s for a TV network, you’ll be able to find an app in the App Store that does it directly. However, for smaller sites that aren’t compatible and don’t have their own apps, there are also several App Store apps that transform the Flash video to Apple-supported H.264 video on their servers, then send it to your iPhone or iPad so you can watch it.

How to update or restore your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad software

Roughly once a year Apple releases a new version of their mobile operating system, like they’ve just done with iOS 5. Eventually, they’ll release a few minor enhancements, for example, and upcoming iOS 5.1. In between, they’ll likely release several bug fixes and performance improvements, for example, an upcoming iOS 5.0.1 or 5.0.2. Once that’s done, you can get future updates over Wi-Fi. If anything goes wrong, you can also easily restore (re-install) either from backup, or as a new device.

Siri has now been fully hacked onto an iPhone 4 and iPod touch and it now communicates with Apple's servers to provide a 100% working solution. We told you a few weeks back that developer Steve Troughton-Smith was working on hacking Siri onto an iPhone 4 but had run into one or two hurdles. Well the main hurdle involved getting the hacked iPhone 4 to talk to Apple's servers. That has now been overcome and it is now looking like a real possibility.

Talking to 9to5Mac, Steve Troughton-Smith revealed that the hack works across devices but requires files from an iPhone 4S that are not legally available to distribute. It also requires a validation token from a live jailbroken iPhone 4S. The whole hack involves around 20 steps to complete. Because of this, Steve Troughton-Smith doesn't want to be involved in distributing the Siri port and has only done it to prove it can be done.

We don't know at this point if others will take on the distribution and risk the wrath of Apple's legal team, we will have to wait and see. In the mean time take a look at the two videos below.
