Dutch courts reject Samsung’s request to ban 3G Apple products

Posted: 15 Oct 2011 11:09 AM PDT

Samsung’s request to ban 3G Apple products was turned down by Dutch courts on Friday. We pretty much figured this would be the outcome considering 3G technology is covered by FRAND as an essential standards technology. Samsung can’t refuse a license to Apple.

This will also make it harder for Samsung to win bans on Apple devices in the EU as well according to intellectual property expert, Florian Mueller –

“A win for Apple but also relief for the industry because the judge upheld widespread understanding of fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms in the use of patents,…”Apple will be taking French and Italian translations of the Dutch ruling with it. This makes it a long shot for Samsung that it could win an injunction in the EU based on its 3G patents,”

The judge simply ruled that the two companies should negotiate an agreement on the license and be done. Anyone surprised by this ruling? I know I’m not.

TiPb Picks of the Week for October 15, 2011

TiPb.com Picks of the Week

Every week a few of us from team TiPb will bring you our current favorite, most fun and useful App Store apps, WebApps, jailbreak apps, even the occasional accessory, web site, or desktop app if the mood strikes us. As long as they're iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch related, they're fair game.

To see what we picked, and to tell us your pick, follow on after the break!

iOS 5 – @chrisoldroyd

Well a bit of a predictable “Pick of the week” this week for me, I am going for the iOS 5 update. It delivers so much in one update I really don’t know where to start. Oh yeah, I do, read this amazing walkthrough that Rene has put together. It covers every last detail of iOS 5.

My favorite parts are iMessage, Notification Center and Wi-Fi iTunes syncing. Also iOS 5 appears to have given my iPad 2 a huge speed boost, it feel so much more responsive now. If you haven’t upgraded to iOS 5 yet, go and do it now! It is the biggest iOS update ever! You are going to love it!

Gif Me! – @Alli_Flowers

This one is just flat out cool. Remember those animated gifs people used to share by email? Well now you can make your own. It’s like stop motion photography made simple. Open the app, frame your subject, tap, repeat. Got everything lined up for the perfect gif? Click next and Gif Me! puts them all together.

I started drawing stick men on a napkin, and worked my way up to stuffed animals. Eventually I’ll be brave enough to do something clever with action figures…not that I collect action figures or anything . It’s also great just for sending hand written messages.

Oh the fun you’ll have!

Cut the Rope: Experiments – @iMuggle

I’ve always been a huge fan of Cut the Rope. Every time I saw an update that added a new batch of levels I would immediately want to sit down and work my way through them. I’m a little late when it comes to picking up Cut the Rope this time but better late than never!

The newest iteration of Cut the Rope adds even more fun to the original. The Professor is very intrigued my Om Nom and has added all kinds of new inventions to the game. You can also find hidden photos throughout the game this time featuring Om Nom and the Professor.

There are currently 3 packs of levels with more coming soon. So if you haven’t picked it up already, make sure you check it out!

Rdio – @Bla1ze

Being a fan of all sorts of music, finding the best app to cater to my tastes was no easy task. There are a lot of music apps in the app store and Rdio I feel is one that is often overshadowed by bigger names like Slacker, Spotify and Pandora.

That said; I love it because it allows for a wide array of music discovery through people you follow plus, you can cache filled for offline thus no longer needing to waste precious bandwidth. The available selection of music is great for mainstream and non mainstream music lovers alike and the app itself is nicely laid out. Give it a try with the free 7-day trial.

iQuickTweet – @JorjLim

One of the new features in iOS5 is the ability to share photos, maps, videos and links completely integrated into iOS. However, there is no native way to simply tweet, without an attachment.

Enter iQuickTweet. It opens up the same 'tweet' UI as the attachment sharing feature, just without the attachment. It also integrates with the same twitter settings, so there is no need to add your details again.

Once you send a tweet, just tap on the bird to send another. Its a very simple app, but extremely useful if you just want to send a quick tweet, without having to load up a full twitter app.

The Amazing Typewriter – @reneritchie

I’m at the Çingleton conference right now so apologies for the brevity. John Gruber from Daring Fireball was just showing this off and I took an immediate like to the finely rendered, varied type.

Facebook for iPad – @llofte

Facebook has finally released an iPad app and it surprising work pretty well. It is so nice to browse Facebook with all the unnecessary and distracting things stripped away. And of course, now that Facebook is on the iPad, it is finally possible to upload pictures. Thank you Facebook – it only took nearly a year and half.

How to setup iMessage on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

Posted: 15 Oct 2011 08:41 AM PDT

Wondering how to setup iOS 5′s new iMessage service on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch? Using iMessage you can send text messages, photos, video and much more to other iMessage users around the world, all over your existing data connection. That’s right, no texting plans or charges needed! Here’s how to get started.

Let’s take a look at the iPhone first

  • First off ensure your running the latest iOS 5 software
  • Select settings
  • Select Messages
  • Turn the toggle switch for iMessage to on
  • You should see a message saying “Activating”
  • You can now enter your receive to addresses, this can be an email address (Apple ID) or just your iPhone phone number, or both. The phone number part should already be filled out
  • If you have an Apple ID and want to use that as well as your phone number, enter it here
  • Once completed you will now have an active iMessage account on your iPhone
  • You can toggle various options on and off such as read recipts etc
  • Also you have an option to send as an SMS if iMessage data connection is not available
That is all you need, you now have iMessage set up on your iPhone!

Now for the iPad and iPod touch

Setting up iMessage on the iPad and iPod touch is slightly diferent as these devices do not have any telephone number associated with them.
  • First off ensure your running the latest iOS 5 software
  • Select settings
  • Select Messages
  • Turn the toggle switch for iMessage to on
  • A new box will open asking you for an Apple ID
  • If you have an Apple ID, enter it here
  • If you don't have one, select Create New Account
  • Once completed you will now have an active iMessage account on your iPad or iPod touch
Ok now we have iMessage set up there are a few things to consider. If you only have one device then you are fine. If you have multiple iOS 5 devices then you will need to think about how you want them to work. Do you want separate iMessage accounts for each device? More than likely, you would want one account that stays in sync across all of your devices.

If you want separate iMessage accounts for each device, you will need to create separate Apple ID’s for each device, these can be created for free in the iMessage original set up screen. Just select Create New Account.

If you want to have all devices use one iMessage account then you need to input the same Apple ID details into each device iMessage setup page.

That should be all you need to get started with iMessage!

TiPb Asks: What are your favorite Siri moments?

Posted: 15 Oct 2011 06:13 AM PDT

It seems like Apple’s Siri team really took the time to add a lot of delightful moments to Siri. Whether it’s “two iPhones walk into a bar…” or “42″, or crack about asking Siri’s age or about Siri’s feelings for Google, there are tons and tons of hidden little gems that are really rather impressive.

What have been your favorite Siri moments so far?

Siri hacked to run on iPhone 4

Posted: 15 Oct 2011 05:46 AM PDT

Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has hacked Siri, the artificially intelligent voice control system on iPhone 4S to run on last year’s iPhone 4. An initial hiccup, GPU support, has already been overcome. Another hiccup, Apple’s servers not responding to queries from Siri running on iPhone 4, is still and issue.

Troughton-Smith also suggests it could theoretically be possible to hook the Siri front end into Microsoft’s TellMe, or Google’s servers instead.

If Troughton-Smith could get Siri running on an iPhone 4′s single core Apple A4 processor, it probably makes you wonder why Apple didn’t include it in iOS 5 for iPhone 4. Apple, of course, famously didn’t bring video recording to iPhone 3G when Jailbreakers had it running. It’s either a feature they want to keep exclusive to iPhone 4S for now, or something Apple’s perfectionistic nature won’t allow them to do if it’ s not 100% smooth and performant. Or both.

Stellar work by Troughton-Smith, check out his Twitter feed, below, for more.

iPhone 4S, will it blend?

Posted: 15 Oct 2011 01:01 AM PDT

Love them or hate them, Blendtec has just released its latest “Will It Blend” video and you guessed it, it features the iPhone 4S.

Tom has adapted the new Siri technology from the new iPhone 4S into his Blendtec Total Blender
The video shows the iPhone 4S getting the familiar industrial blender treatment, this time with a Siri adapted version of the blender; well thats what Tom would like you to believe anyway. The video is below, if you don’t enjoy gadget destruction, look away now!

How to take apart your brand new iPhone 4S [video]

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 11:24 PM PDT

If you managed to get your hands on an iPhone 4S yesterday, I bet you can't wait to get your screw drivers out take it apart. Well maybe not, but if you're curious about what goes into your shiny new iPhone 4S but don't fancy taking yours apart, there is another way.

The guys form iFixYouri have done all the hard work for you and put together a video showing the whole process. It covers everything from taking the iPhone 4S out of the box right down to spreading out the sum of its parts all over a desk.

A lot of the features are very similar, but not the same to the CDMA and GSM, including the screen, dock connector, back glass, and the vibrator(same as the CDMA), making replacement and repair services readily available.
What could be better than that? Well the sound track to the video, over to you Rick Astley!
